When we bought the SUV, it had a small top battery installed. The battery slid over and caused my alternator to go out completely. I must have caught fire, as there were burnt wires to the alternator. We replaced the alternator, and it was over $295 dollars and then had to get a new battery, and that was over $150 dollars. I installed it myself because I am a mechanic.

After a battery recall was performed on the vehicle at the dealership, a serious safety issue occurred. A short circuit in the battery cable caused a fire in the engine compartment. Fortunately, I was able to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher before it spread, but it happened very close to the gas line and posed a severe danger. We believe the fire may be related to the recall service. The fire caused visible damage to the battery area, and we have documented it with photos and video. We are very concerned about the safety of this vehicle and potential negligence in the recall repair. We are requesting that NHTSA investigate this matter and take appropriate action.

The battery is off . It does not work. The car does not start. It looks like the battery is not properly installed. I just left my car at the Toyota dealership in June 12 for maintenance services, for brake fluid and flush etc including the replacement of a battery mounting hardware however it does not look right. The car started to go off and today it does not start at all. Please advice Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I'm submitting this formal complaint because the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall remedy of the open recall on my vehicle. The recall was first created on Nov 01,2023 Manufacturer Recall Number: 23TB13 NHTSA Recall Number: 23V734 As of November 12, 2024, and after one year since it was issued, the recall status is still marked as "Recall Incomplete; remedy not yet available." I am in the process of importing my vehicle to Canada, and this unresolved recall is putting the entire process on hold. I have done the free recommended inspection under Consumer Advisory 21TG01, but this isn't considered a solution in order to call the recall completed.

I just called Toyota dealer at Grime City IA this morning to make an appointment for recall the battery hold-down clamp and the battery tray as I just knew yesterday. Unfortunately, the customer lady let me know they are unavailable to do that because they do not have enough parts for now. As I knew, the program just extended until June 2024 then I asked her to put my case on the list, but she denied to do it too. So would you please give me your recommendation and email me back as a proof. After June 2024, if they continue to deny me as today, I will have proof to talk with them. Thank you very much and have a good day.

My son was driving our RAV4 LE 2015 and took an exit. While driving, the car shut off, and the dashboard lights blinked. He turned the car on and moved about 40 feet in the exit when the car shut off again, and smoke came from the hood. A few minutes later, the car was on fire. The cause was a battery-induced short circuit. The burned RAV4 LE 2015 is available for inspection. This incident put my son and a friend at serious risk. At this moment, the problem hasn't been confirmed by a dealer or independent service. However, months later, the manufacturer issued a recall on Nov 01, 2023. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or any other party. There were no warning lamps or messages, except for the first time it shut off when the dashboard lights blinked.

When I try to start up my car after a full month of parking as usual I knew already it has a dead battery so I jump started then once it started I heard a very small explosion with smoke coming from underneath the glove compartment then I found a very small fire started from the same place so I left the car and I called 911 who came and extinguished the fire after the entire car was already engulfed and exploded in fire. The car closed the other two cars on both sides to melt partially as well. The picture attached has the incident number.

The recall for my RAV4 was for the battery, and it may cause a fire. The safety of my family members and other families was affected by this fire. We are all displaced. My mom parked our car under our apartment, and 15 minutes later, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The battery was replaced in 2019, and the rep told us of farmers that they can't confirm that the recall may be the root of the fire. I was told by the farmers rep that a certain battery is responsible for the fire. The car was parked and no lights were on.

I drove all day for work without issues and when I made a right into my neighborhood, I lost power and power steering. I pulled over and parked my car. I noticed smoke coming from it and popped the hood. The wired connecting to the battery caught fire. It seems the battery could have shifted and grounded itself.

Jul 13, 2023 Fire

Cause and Origin of the fire which led to the spread from the vehicle to the home resulted from a known issue with stated vehicle electrical failure. Fortunately the homeowner was able to remove herself from the home without injury. The vehicle had been parked and not operating for approximatley 18 hours prior to fire.

Mar 9, 2023 Fire

Approximately two minutes after turning the vehicle off, smoke started coming from the engine area. Within the next two minutes, flames emerged. The fire quickly engulfed the vehicle in flames causing a total loss. The fire department declared it a loss and stated a cause will likely not be known by them. I was not in the vehicle at the time of the smoke. A truck next to the vehicle quickly moved away. Insurance company is in route to investigate. No warning signs prior.

Today I started my RAV4 in my driveway to warm it up and went back in the house. Approximatly 5-10 minutes later someone knocked on the door to let me know the car was on fire. The fire department said it was likley that the fire started in the engine and spread to the rest of the vehicle.

Radio and Navigation system is not working. Dealership stated this is a factory problem that is very costly to repair. A lot of Toyota vehicles are having the same problem. It is a safety issue because driver can't use the hands free option or navigation system. So using the phone while driving is really not safe!

Power to the vehicle was lost while making a turn under a stop light. Emergency flashers were used. All dashboard lights came on at the time the vehicle lost power. Radio stopped. The car was turned off and was able to be restarted after several seconds. The danger was having a vehicle stopped under a stop light for several seconds. The problem has yet to be repeated. It happened just this morning 5/23/22. No other warnings were given before loss of power. We have not yet had an inspection by any other parties but will plan on it as we are aware there had been an issue with a 12 volt battery case in the past on this model.

Purchased our Rav4 (Certified Used Car) from a Toyota Dealership in January, 2018. On December 12, 2021, I went into our garage to start the car. Upon turning the ignition key, the car starter clicked and the car's starter did not turn. The instrument lights also started to blink on and off, so I turned the ignition key to the off position. I removed the battery and took it to our local mechanic who tested the battery and determined that the battery was dead and that it would not accept a charge. This battery was the second new battery that I had installed in the car, and the second one to fail. I took the dead battery back to Walmart where I purchase it, and Walmart replaced it for free under warranty. I installed the brand new battery to the car. Upon connecting both the positive and negative wires correctly to the positive and negative terminals of the new battery, the car's starter began to turn, but there was no key in the ignition when the starter began to turn. As soon as the car's starter began to turn without there being a key in the ignition, I disconnected the battery cables immediately as a precaution and I made an appointment with the service department at a Toyota Dealership nearby. I had the car towed to the Toyota Dealership. The Toyota Dealership told me there was a battery recall on the car to verify it's size. The Dealership diagnosed the car's electrical system and said that the battery was sized and installed correctly, but there was a short in the electrical system. The dealership said that they would need to remove the faulty car starter that was installed prior to me owning the car, and the dealership would need to restore the starting system to OEM specs. Total cost was $558.02 for the repair.

Nov 18, 2021 Fire

The electrical system failed and the car has been towed by State Farm Insurance to Cop-art Savage Vendor in Elgin Il today. My safety was at risk by fast rapidly engulfing flames coming from under the car hood. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center that we know of. Vehicle or components have been inspected by police, and might have been inspected by our Insurance after the vehicle was towed. There was a warning battery light just before smoke came out from under the hood, then the car stopped and then flames started to come out from under the hood engulfing the front part of the car.

My wife was driving her 2015 Toyota Rav4 on September 13, 2021 when the car stalled while on the interstate. She coasted to the side. It started back up so she continued to work which was off the next exit. As soon as she entered the parking lot, the Rav4 stalled again and she was able to coast in to a parking lot. As soon as she walked inside the building the Rav4 caught on fire. There were no warning lights are any indication of anything wrong with the vehicle up until this point. According to the dealer and the insurance company, the battery caught on fire. What exactly caused this I do not know. The Insurance company deemed the vehicle a total loss per the Toyota Dealers recommendation.

Aug 25, 2021 Fire

Slow down to make a right turn, the car completely shut off. Put on emergency lights pulled into nearest safest parking lot, braking systems failed, finally put car in park. Pulled keys out of ignition. Took a look around nothing was physically wrong, got back into vehicle started it, with no problem. Took it through the same parking lot, through the drive-thru. Started smoking at the second window, pulled back into the parking lot, shut off vehicle. Got out of vehicle to access smoke, fire started, got back int car then an explosion. Grabbed my daughter and my things the best I could. There was about two or three more explosions afterwards, the fire department came to take out the flames; this was after other employees from the same area tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers but it wasn’t much help. It halfway burned into the ground, the Fireman had to use the jaws of life to get the hood off of the car to extinguish the fire.

DRIVING NORMAL, MADE A RIGHT TURN AND CAR SUDDENLY RESTARTS, STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP DURING TURN FOR A COUPLE SECONDS. ELECTRIC RESTART ENGINE AND TURNS OFF THE CAR AND CAN'T GAS IT, ONLY BRAKE. CAR COMES BACK ON WITHOUT ME TURNING IT ON AND DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN REST OF THE DRIVE. DRIVING NORMAL FOR 2 DAYS AND ON THE 3RD DAY, ENGINE RESTARTS AGAIN RANDOMLY WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN, SAME EXACT DESCRIPTION AS DESCRIBED PREVIOUSLY. DRIVEN CAR FOR A DAY AND INCIDENT HASN'T REPEATED YET. BUT, NOW NOT SURE IF THIS AFFECTED IT, SENSORS OF CAR DOOR OPEN SIGN IS ON WHEN CAR IS TURNED OFF AND ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE IN PLACE FOR LOCKING. ONLY WHEN CAR IS OFF AND I CANNOT FIX IT.

NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS MY CARS EPS LIGHT WILL COME ON AFTER PUTTING MY CAR INTO REVERSE THE CAR DOES NOT CONNECT AND GOES INTO NEUTRAL INSTEAD CAUSING THE CAR TO ROLL FORWARD CREATING HAZARDS BECAUSE IT HAPPENS ON HILLS AND FLAT AREAS. I THEN HAVE TO PUT MY CAR INTO PARK, TURN IT OFF AND RESTART THE CAR TO GET THE CAR TO GO INTO THE CORRECT GEAR. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO TOYOTA BUT THEY WON?T DO ANYTHING BECAUSE MY VIN IS NOT UNDER RECALL. STARTING IN 2019 I STARTED NOTICING FLAKES OF PAINT IN CRACKS OF DOORWAYS AND CREASES OF THE CAR. LAST MONTH A BIG PIECE OF PAINT STARTED COMING OFF THE TOP OF MY CAR IN FRONT OF MY SUNROOF. *TR

SHORTLY AFTER DRIVING WITH NO ISSUES, THE PARKED CAR STARTED TO SMOKE FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. WITHIN SECONDS, A LARGE FIRE HAD STARTED WHICH COMPLETELY CONSUMED THE CAR AND ALSO SPREAD TO MY WIFE'S CAR AND THE HOUSE'S CARPORT. INSURANCE INVESTIGATOR INFORMED US THAT THE FIRE LIKELY STARTED IN/NEAR THE ENGINE TOWARDS THE DRIVERS SIDE BASED ON WHERE THE HOTTEST PARTS OF THE FIRE APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN. HOWEVER, NO CONCLUSIVE DETERMINATION WAS MADE REGARDING THE CAUSE. THE CAR WAS IN GOOD CONDITION AND HAD NOT HAD ANY MAINTENANCE WORK PERFORMED ON IT RECENTLY. THERE WERE ALSO NO SIGNS OF INTRUSION BY RODENTS OR OTHER ANIMALS. THIS HAPPENED WITH NO WARNING. I'VE ALSO SINCE LEARNED THIS HAD HAPPENED ONLY ONE MONTH BEFORE TO THE PARENTS OF ONE OF OUR CHILDRENS' FRIENDS. THEY ALSO HAD A RAV4, ALTHOUGH NOT THE SAME MODEL YEAR (I BELIEVE IT WAS A 2013). I HAVE ALSO SEEN MANY OTHER REPORTS WHILE RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE. IF THERE IS A DEFECT OR DESIGN FLAW CONTRIBUTING TO THESE FIRES, IT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED QUICKLY!

I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE ENTRANCE RAMP WHEN THE BATTERY DIED BUT THEN I WAS ABLE TO START IT BACK AND DROVE JUST A SHORT DISTANCE WHEN THE HOOD STARTED SMOKING. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE MOTOR OFF AND RAISED THE HOOD, AND THE BATTERY WAS ON FIRE. THE BATTERY AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BURNED.

I DROVE FOR A FEW SECONDS, LESS THAN A BLOCK OUT OF A PARKING LOT, ONTO A LOCAL STREET, WHEN MY 2015 RAV4 SUDDENLY SHUT DOWN AND SMOKE STARTING COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL TO ROLL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND GET OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC, AND GOT OUT OF THE CAR TO WALK FAR AWAY. I SAW FLAMES UNDER THE FRONT OF THE CAR AND CALLED 911.

WE PURCHASED A TOYOTA RAV4 WITH A 100% O.K. FROM TOYOTA DEALER FOUR WEEKS AND 200 MILES AFTER PARKING IN THE GARAGE THE NEXT MORNING IT WOULD NOT START SEVERAL TRY'S LATER IT BARLEY STARTED, I AM A RETIRED MECHANIC, THE HEADLIGHTS WERE NORMAL BRIGHT WITH HORN HONKING, THE DEALER TOLD MY WIFE THE BATTERY HAD 0 CRANKING AMPS THEY INSTALLED A NEW 80 MONTH TOYOTA BATTERY,. MY PROBLEM IS SAFETY ISSUES GOING TO THE INTERNET AND SEARCHING TOYOTA PROBLEMS BATTERY'S, ELECTRICAL SHORTS, ELECTRICAL FIRES, STOPPING UNEXPECTEDLY LOSS OF STEERING, ELECTRIC WIRE BURN SMELL, I COULD GO ON MY POINT IS EVERYTHING IS TIED TOGETHER ELECTRICAL ISSUE WITH WIRING SHORTS ! I DON'T WANT TO SOUND LIKE AN ALARMIST BUT IT MIGHT SOUND THAT WAY, SOMETHING IS CAUSING ALL THE ISSUES WITH EARLY BATTERY FAILURE, AS A MECHANIC 50 YEARS I HAVE SEEN THIS BEFORE AND ALMOST ALWAYS IT IS A ELECTRICAL SHORT SOME WARE IN THE SYSTEM, AND IN SOME VEHICLES YOU NO LONGER HAVE THROTTLE CABLES OR LINKAGE YOU HAVE ELECTRIC ASSIST MEANING A MOTOR OR SOME KIND OF PRESSURE SENSITIVE DEVICE THAT CAN SHORT AND INADVERTENTLY CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO STOP OR CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO ADVANCE FULL THROTTLE WITH NO WAY TO STOP! I'M HOPING SOME ONE WILL READ THIS THAT CAN HELP PUT OUR MINDS TO REST OR PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE, I AM AFRAID FOR MY WIFE AND ALL LOVED ONES DRIVING THESE VEHICLES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER. THE FAILURE WAS SPORADIC. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD SPORADICALLY RESTART INDEPENDENTLY. THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM, AIR BAG, TRACTION CONTROL, AND ALL WHEEL DRIVE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY SIX TIMES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 9,000. UPDATED 08/31/16*LJ CONSUMER STATED THE LIGHT O HE CRUISE CONTROL STALK BLINKS OFF AND ON CRUISE CONTROL DROPS OUT UNEXPECTEDLY. THE ENGINE SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND YOU LOSE ALL ELECTRICAL POWER. IT WILL SOMETIMES NOT RESTART FOR UP TO 15 MINUTES. THE ENGINES SHUTS DOWN FOR A FEW SECONDS TO A MINUTE AND THEN RESTARTS ON ITS OWN. IT LEAVES THE WARNING LIGHTS FOR THE ABS, AWD AND TRACTION CONTROL ON AND THEY DON'T GO OFF UNTIL YOU CYCLE THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE RADIO/ NAVIGATION SCREEN ALSO LOCKS UP WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THE CAR HAS BEEN LOOKED AT A TOTAL OF SEVEN TIMES FOR THIS PROBLEM. CAR HAS SPUN 9 TIMES BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. UPDATED 6/12/18*JB

THE LIGHT ON THE CRUISE CONTROL STALK BLINKS AND IT IS VERY DISTRACTING AT NIGHT WHILE DRIVING. THEN THE CRUISE CONTROL STARTED DROPPING OUT WHILE DRIVING. NO WARNING LIGHTS OR CODES WERE STORED IN THE COMPUTER WHEN CHECKED BY THE DEALER. THE DEALER REPLACED THE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH, BUT THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE. THE ENGINE STARTED SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH A TOTAL LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER AND WOULD TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE IT WOULD RESTART DUE TO NO ELECTRICAL POWER. THE DEALER THEN ADJUSTED THE SWITCH ON THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT IT DIDN'T HELP. THE RADIO/NAVIGATION SCREEN HAS SINCE LOCKED UP AND YOU HAVE TO RESTART THE CAR TO RESET IT. THE ENGINE WILL SOMETIMES SHUT OF FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THE RESTART ON ITS OWN WHILE DRIVING. WHEN THIS HAPPENS SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS STAY ON (ABS, AIRBAGS, TRACTION CONTROL & ALL WHEEL DRIVE). THE LIGHTS DO NOT RESET UNTIL THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND BACK ON BY THE KEY. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN INVOLVED IN 3 ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THESE PROBLEMS. THE CAR IS NOW IN THE SHOP AFTER CONTACTING THE MANUFACTURER SEVERAL TIMES ABOUT THE FAILURE OF THE DEALER TO REPAIR THE CAR AND THAT IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. IT IS AT A DIFFERENT DEALERSHIP DUE TO THE SELLING DEALERS INCOMPETENCE IN THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND MANAGEMENT TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. THESE PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR OVER 5 MONTHS AND OVER A PERIOD OF 15,000 MILES AND I DO NOT BELIEVE IT CAN BE FIXED AND I DO NOT BELIEVE THE MANUFACTURER IS REALLY TRYING TO REPAIR THE CAR BECAUSE OF ALL THE STALLING THEY ARE CURRENTLY DOING AT THIS TIME. I NEED YOUR HELP.

PURCHASED THIS CAR DEALER CERTIFIED AFTER BEING LEASED FOR 9 MONTHS BY SOMEONE ELSE, FROM NEW ROCHELLE TOYOTA. HAD 5700 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. SINCE PURCHASE IT DOES NOT ALWAYS START THE FIRST TIME, SOMETIMES TAKING 3-4 TIMES TO START, AND MAKING STRANGE NOISES, IT SOUNDS LIKE ITS GOING TO START AND THEN DIES. HAS BEEN TO THE SHOP 3 TIMES AND GOING IN FOR THE 4TH TIME TODAY, ON 12/4 A NEW FUEL PUMP RELAY WAS INSTALLED, STARTS BETTER BUT STILL UNKNOWN REASON WHY IT AT TIMES IT STILL TAKES 3-4 TIMES TO START IT. IS A MYSTERY , NOTHING SHOWS UP ON THE TECH COMPUTERS AFTER IT HAPPENS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. HAVE OWNED TOYOTAS FOR OVER 17 YEARS NEVER EXPECTED AN ISSUE LIKE THIS. ALSO LIGHTS FLICKER AND THERE ARE STRANGE NOISES WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START AND UNSUCCESSFUL. NO RHYME OR REASON TO THIS ISSUE.TOOK POSSESSION OF THE CAR 10-13-15 I THINK IT IS A LEMON. I HAVE A VIDEO OF WHAT HAPPENS DONT THINK I CAN UPLOAD TO THIS WEBSITE.

AFTER 10 DAYS OF OWNING THE CAR AND LESS THAN 600 MILES THE CAR WOULDN'T RUN AND WE HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY SAID IT WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT THE DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BY A RODENT. LATER THAT SAME EVENING OUR SALESMAN CALLED AND INFORMED US THAT COMPONENTS IN THE CAR ARE "GREEN" AND MADE OF SOYBEAN AND TO KEEP OUR CAR IN THE GARAGE (WHICH WE DON'T HAVE). I HAVE SINCE CAUGHT A MOUSE UNDER THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE WITH A GLUE TRAP AND FOUND HAIR AND MOUSE DROPPINGS. THE BEST OFFER THEY HAVE GIVEN ME IS TO GIVE ME A DIFFERENT TOYOTA VEHICLE AT COST (AND TAKE THE LOSS ON MY CURRENT VEHICLE). I HAVE COMPLAINED TO BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND TO TOYOTA. I HAVE HAD TWO OTHER VEHICLES PARKED IN WITHIN THE SAME PROXIMITY FOR OVER TWO YEARS. I HAVE NEVER HAD RODENT ISSUES WITH EITHER OF THEM AND I RUN INTO ISSUES WITHIN THE FIRST 10 DAYS WITH A NEW VEHICLE. I AM CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF MY WIFE AND TWO YEAR OLD CHILD. IF THERE ARE MICE LIVING INSIDE THE CAR, THEY COULD BE LEAVING RAT DROPPINGS THAT COULD BE HARMFUL TO BOTH OF THEM. I AM ANGRY AND CONCERNED AND DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY, WHEN OTHER VEHICLES PARKED IN THE SAME LOCATION AREN'T EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM, THIS ISN'T A VALID REASON TO RETURN THE CAR. HERE ARE TWO ARTICLES THAT DETAIL THE PROBLEM MYSELF AND OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS HAVE HAD - HTTP://CTWATCHDOG.COM/FINANCE/RODENTS-DAMAGE-CARS-BY-CHEWING-ELECTRICAL-CONNECTIONS-TIPS-ON-HOW-TO-AVOID-COSTLY-REPAIRS, HTTP://WWW.SYNLUBE.COM/INCREDIBLEEDIBLECAR1.HTM
