This is another complaint with the same issue. Got gas on January 1, 2026, the truck did not how any indication that it was going to have any problems. Engine shut down and wouldn’t turn back on. This has happened twice after getting gas, no dealership knows the problem. This is casing me stress and putting myself and family in danger. Considering it stops out of no where

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle experienced a loss of motive power. No warning light was illuminated. The contact managed to push the vehicle over to the shoulder of the road, and the vehicle was towed to the residence. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

My 2019 Toyota RAV4 experienced a dangerous electrical and transmission failure that ultimately caused the vehicle to stall while driving and made me lose control. For several weeks before the incident, the vehicle showed subtle hesitation when accelerating but no warning lights. After the car stalled and spun out coming off the Ben Franklin Bridge onto I-76 near downtown Camden, police responded, confirmed the vehicle had unexpectedly shut off, and verified there was no crash damage. I later brought the car to the Toyota dealership, where they discovered corrosion on the battery cable, failed ABS sensors, and a weak battery. I paid $668 for a new battery, new cable, and ABS sensor repairs. At that time, the dealership did not inform me of any transmission issues and released the vehicle back to me. I made it only a short distance up the road before realizing the vehicle could not accelerate past 40 mph and was still malfunctioning, so I immediately returned it. The next day, the dealership initially claimed there was nothing wrong with the vehicle, but after I insisted they re-evaluate the car, they then informed me that the transmission was failing and needed replacement. This sequence of electrical instability, combined with the transmission malfunction, ultimately led to the earlier stall where I lost all power steering and braking assist and spun out into the median. The vehicle, diagnostic records, and replaced components are available for inspection. The sudden loss of power and control created a major safety risk to me and other drivers in a high-traffic area.

Was insinuating engine was over heating even in -4° weather has no hot air plenty of coolant. This is causing the vehicle to "buck" amd having to have to pull over and waiting several minutes to let the engine "cool off" I can make it about 3 miles in-between pull overs. After some research I feel like the issue falls under a current lawsuit against Toyota regarding the coolant valve based on reading other issues and what my rav is doing. It is a several thousand dollar fix through a dealership and one my family can not afford especially if it is a poorly manufactured part of the car. It is one of two vehicles we have and need to daily living especially having a child and no means yo offered another safe vehicle at this time. The coolant pump itself

Nov 21, 2025

My 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (VIN: [XXX] ) suffered sudden engine failure due to coolant intrusion. On Nov 20, 2025, Johnstons Toyota in Harriman, NY (RO#XXX) diagnosed the issue and recorded DTCs P26CA31 and P26CB, which indicate failure of the coolant flow control/bypass valve. The dealer confirmed heavy white smoke from the exhaust with a strong coolant smell and advised the engine had failed, recommending a replacement. This vehicle is part of the early 2019 Japan-built batch widely known for premature electric water pump and coolant-flow system failures. Internal impeller swelling, seal leakage, and bearing seizure can cause coolant pressure spikes and ultimately head-gasket failure with coolant entering the cylinders. This defect has been reported by thousands of RAV4 Hybrid owners (2019–2021). Toyota has addressed it quietly through internal TSBs such as XXX and XXX but no public recall has been issued. The safety risk is severe: the engine began emitting thick white smoke and ran roughly, risking sudden power loss, overheating, or engine seizure while driving. A stall at highway speed could easily cause a collision. Toyota USA opened Case #XXX but declined assistance despite the defect being well documented. This failure was sudden, with no warning lights prior to the incident. Given the widespread nature of this defect and its clear safety implications, I request that NHTSA open a formal investigation into the electric water pump/coolant system failures in 2019–2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrids and consider requiring a safety recall. Stopped for gas on 11/6/2025 immediately after getting gas the truck shook twice, the power steering light and engine shut down light came on and the truck turned off. Waited for a few minutes to turn the engine again it wouldn’t start. Got it towed to my nearest dealership who kept it for a day. Said there was nothing wrong with the truck, there was no code showing and they couldn’t determine the cause of the problem.

I stopped for gas; my car would not start. The power steering fluid light came on. I went inside to purchase some but when I returned to the car, there was no place to pour it. After a few minutes the car started. About a month later, my husband stopped for gas and the car killed right after he left the gas station, about 10 minutes later, it started. Took it to a mechanic, they couldn't find anything wrong with it because the check engine light wasn't on and the car wasn't giving any problem codes. About two weeks ago, I stopped for gas, the car wouldn't start. Finally got it started, and the check engine light came on. However, it's still not reading any codes.

Oct 3, 2025

The car transmission hesitates to accelerate at slow speeds and jerks or lurches forwards in a uncontrollable way. Dangerous at stop signs or on slow or hilly roads. Dealership does not directly acknowledge this issue, despite mechanic mentioning very clearly it is related to T-SB-0107-19 which Toyota dealerships charge to repair. No warning messages. Issue has existed as long as I have owned the vehicle 1.5 years from 61,000 miles to 71,000 miles.

Sep 25, 2025

Vehicle states engine maintenance required. Is a consistent reoccurring problem according to dealer. System failure due to manufacturer always puts the user at risk.

Jul 28, 2025

2019-2023 model year Toyota RAV4s and Toyota Corollas are equipped with defective coolant bypass valves prone to premature failure which can cause coolant to leak out of a vehicle’s closed-loop coolant system, harming its ability to properly regulate engine temperature. This can cause overheating, stalling, increased emissions, and total engine failure and also allows coolant to leak into and damage surrounding engine components, including a vehicle’s electrical system, the complaint relays. The warning message that common appears for this issue is "Engine maintenance required Visit your dealer "

Jul 23, 2025

The engine maintenance light came on and I took the car to my independent mechanic. The "soft code" indicates that the coolant system valve/hose (engine coolant bypass valve) is showing in the closed position when it should be open. My mechanic has tried to order a replacement part, but is having trouble finding one. After my personal research, I see that there is a Class Action Lawsuit regarding this part from 2024 indicating that it can cause the car to overheat, stall, and potentially severe engine damage. Toyota has no formal recalls on this, but it has been indicated that some owners have received support from Toyota on models built up to 2021.

7/16/2025 Engine Maintenance Required Visit Dealer" message on a 2019 Toyota RAV4 LE came on and will not go off. Upon further research and inspection coolant bypass valve is faulty.

Jul 18, 2025

I am submitting this complaint regarding a recurring issue in the coolant bypass valve of my 2019 Toyota RAV4 XLE Premium. Although there was no check engine light, the vehicle displayed a persistent warning: “Engine Maintenance Required – Visit Dealership.” This message repeatedly appears on the instrument cluster and blocks critical driving information, including the speedometer, fuel economy, and other key displays. Even when the driver manually cancels the message, it returns within minutes. This creates a constant distraction and obstructs visibility, which poses a safety risk during driving. I took the vehicle to the dealership, where they diagnosed the issue as an internal short circuit in the coolant bypass valve and retrieved diagnostic trouble code P268115. This code relates to a malfunction in the valve’s electrical control system, which affects the engine’s ability to regulate temperature effectively. Toyota currently offers a Customer Support Program (CSP) for the coolant bypass valve, but only if the valve is leaking coolant. However, my vehicle's failure was due to an electrical defect, and Toyota does not cover this under the same program. This creates an unfair burden on owners and fails to address the full scope of the issue, even though the results—loss of proper cooling function—are the same. Many RAV4 owners have reported similar problems online, but no recall or technical service bulletin has been issued for this kind of failure. I believe this defect raises genuine safety concerns, including: Driver distraction due to persistent warning messages Obstruction of critical dashboard information Potential for engine overheating or reduced performance I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this issue as a potential safety-related defect and determine whether Toyota should be required to expand support or issue a recall for this component, regardless of whether the failure is due to coolant leakage or internal electrical malfunction.

Jul 15, 2025

The vehicle began displaying intermittent warning messages and slipping into "Mud & Sand" mode without cause. Later, multiple dash lights illuminated, including 4WD malfunction, check engine, and coolant system warnings. The vehicle became undrivable due to overheating. Dealership diagnostics indicated a failure in the coolant bypass valve actuator the electronic water pump was receiving a signal but not responding, resulting in loss of coolant circulation and overheating. There may also be a shorted control panel causing related system failures. This problem has been confirmed by a Toyota dealer, and the vehicle remains at the service center pending resolution. The issue appears related to a known Customer Support Program (CSP 24TE04), which covers the coolant bypass valve actuator. There was no prior accident or abuse of the vehicle, and the vehicle only has 52,000 miles. Safety was compromised due to unexpected power loss and overheating while in motion. The issue has not yet been resolved. The vehicle has also experienced prior water intrusion through the roof rails, which may have contributed to electrical damage.

Started normally, but had a message on the screen saying “Check Fuel Cap.” I needed gas anyways, drove about 3 minutes to the gas station, turned engine off, put gas. Turned engine back on and within 3 seconds it shut off. The screen displayed “engine stopped- Power steering low.” I tried a handful of times to start, it did not. After 20 minutes and some rest, it started. With no more messages. Battery and alternator were tested, both were good.

Faulty coolant bypass valve at 115,000 miles. Seems to be a repeat issue for many Toyota owners. Not covered by the powertrain warranty, but a known issue by the manufacturer.

May 18, 2025

The Engine Maintenance required light comes on when I use the air conditioner. I suspect the coolant bypass hose is not working properly.

May 11, 2025

Check engine light came on and code P268115 was shown for coolant bypass valve internal failure. Valve was replaced by dealership and I was told it would not be covered under the Toyota Customer Support Program because that only covers valves that leak externally, not internal failures.

Coolant bypass failure

Apr 18, 2025

An error code titled “Engine Maintenance Required. Visited your dealer” appeared on my dash screen. The error code was unable to be removed. I attempted have the car diagnosed by a private auto shop, however no faulty codes pop up. After research online, the problem was determined to be the engine coolant valve, which are faulty on many Rav4s. I eventually get a letter from Toyota for a Customer Support Program regarding the Engine Coolant Valve. When brought in for maintenance, Toyota pulled the error code “P268115” which is for an internal failure of the engine coolant valve. However, Toyota will not replace the part due to their Customer Support Program (24TE04) only covering the part for “small engine coolant leak[s]”. Essentially, Toyota will replace the part for being faulty if it had small leaks, but not if the part itself is faulty. When I asked the service member I was working with stated that this is a known problem and “[Toyota] should have just replaced the whole part, but they only do it for small leaks.” Currently, litigation is proceeding regarding the engine coolant valve, alleging Toyota knowingly put faulty parts in their Rav4s. I urge you to investigate this claim.

Engine Maintenance Required warning came on. Took car to dealership, diagnostic informed the issue was the coolant bypass valve. Repair cost is $781.28 + diagnostic $160.

Apr 7, 2025

The engine coolant bypass valve has malfunctioned. this is caused a faulty part that toyota knows malfunctions often in their toyota rav4 for multiple years including the 2019. It can cause problems for the engine cooling component, meaning the vehicle overheats, as well as affects the cars internal A/C. It can only be diagnosed at the dealership, not through a normal diagnostic. There is currently a class action lawsuit, and many others owners of multiple years of the toyota rav4 have the same issue.

My 2019 TOYOTA RAV4 ADVENTURE is groaning, especially when accelerating or decelerating, particularly with the AWD system engaged. Plus, there no or slow forward collision warning. Toyota seems to ignore these issues related to the Adventure RAv4 of 2019 and 2020. Thanks

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the messages "Parking Brake Malfunction", "Secondary Brake system Malfunction”, “4WD Malfunction", "Lane Assist Malfunction", "Pre-collision Malfunction" and messages indicating malfunctions of the electrical system, the engine throttle, and the transmission were displayed. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where a spark plug and ignition coil were replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that all the spark plugs and ignition coils needed to be replaced prior to the final diagnostic test. The vehicle was not completely diagnosed and was taken back to the mechanic, where a specialist used a camera to diagnose that there was coolant intrusion in cylinder #4, due to a fractured cylinder head. The mechanic related to the failure of NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V064000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided because the vehicle was not covered under warranty and the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 87,230.

On 01/29/2025 at around 5:30pm I was driving home from work when suddenly the car stalled. I was going about 45 mph on a secondary to Lane Highway that was completely black because there are no street lights in that area. There were all kinds of warning lights flashing on the dash. I let my car drift to the shoulder was able to break and put it in park. I tried turning the vehicle back on but it would not start. My cell phone showed no Wi-Fi connection but I know the area very well and I knew I could walk several feet to a connection. Therefore spite concerns for my safety I had to leave my vehicle in order to call for help. I walked about 30 ft in the pitch black on this highway dressed in dark clothing on a shoulder that was very narrow. There was a pickup truck coming my way who flashed his high beams in my face but did not stop to see if he could help. Actually I was grateful for this because it's a pretty secluded area and I was very frightened for my safety. I was able to get a connection about 30 ft away from the vehicle and called my husband who said he would be on his way. I walked back to the vehicle got in and tried to start it. It would not start but all the warning lights were flashing on the dash. I decided I should take pictures of the warning lights in case we needed that for the dealer. After a couple of minutes I decided to try to start the car again and it did start. I was able to drive down the road to a Wi-Fi connection called my husband to let him know I was on my way. Once I got home the car seemed to be in order but there was one warning light telling us to take it to the dealer because there was something wrong with the hybrid system. We made an appointment to go in on January 31st. They inspected the vehicle to the tune of almost $200 and diagnosed the problem as follows: hybrid EV battery voltage system isolation internal internal electronic failure rear motor corrosion on both hybrid harnesses. Cost to repair $5,500.00

In September 2023 I kept getting a warning on my 2019 Toyota RAV4 saying “engine maintenance required”. My car had roughly 50,000 miles. I was not due for an oil change and I serviced my vehicle regularly. I tried to take it to autozone to read the code but nothing came up and they said I just needed an oil change which I knew wasn’t true. I finally took it to a local Toyota dealership on September 23, 2023 and the first thing the advisor said to me after I told her about the warning message was “I already know what’s wrong with it, you’re like the 4th car today with the same issue”. The issue was a defective coolant bypass valve. The advisor said the cars most affected were RAV4’s followed by corollas and it was happening at random mileages. I asked if there was a recall and there wasn’t, she advised me to call Toyota to make a complaint which I did and nothing happened. I had to pay around $1000 to get a defective part fixed that Toyota knew about and still hasn’t issued a recall. Theres a class action lawsuit currently involving 2019-2023 corollas and RAV4s, but I still don’t understand why there hasn’t been a recall. If I didn’t get it repaired, my engine could have overheated multiple times causing more issues. They are knowingly not recalling a defective piece of a equipment that has been installed in hundreds of thousands of cars.

Engine maintenance required when AC is turned on. This is an issue with the coolant by pass valve, many rav4 owners have reported but a recall has not been established

Oct 24, 2024

My coolant bypass valve gave out and Toyota is insisting it’s not covered under warranty my 10 year warranty. Toyota knew there was a defect and didn’t tell consumers.

Oct 19, 2024

I was stopped at a red light. When the light turned green and I pressed the gas, the engine sputtered and almost shut off. Just before I came to a stop, the engine revved up and the vehicle accelerated. The uneven acceleration is concerning. I recently replaced the gas cap and serviced the fuel system, which leads me to believe there is a defect with the engine. Later in the day, the check engine light went on and AWD system, cruise control, and lane assist were disabled.

Oct 16, 2024

A malfunction in the electronic control of the engine, throttle, or automatic transmission has been detected. The car then ran hot and started jerking. I took it to autozone for them to look and could not find anything, I had a mechanic come over to look at it, and he couldn't find anything either. I sent it to Toyota Wolfchase in Memphis TN. Who has stated it will be two or three days before they can even look at it. This seems to be a common problem with Toyota cars yet there's no recall I have seen numerous complaints on Google Reddit, TikTok, and more. I called corporate to make a complaint and they said they don't see any complaints which I know is not true

Oct 12, 2024

In July of 2023 at only 23K miles but out of warranty coverage, I received the Engine Maintenance Required warning for the failure of the Coolant Bypass Valve. I took it to the dealership (Alamo Toyota in San Antonio, TX) and they said it needed to be replaced and would not be covered under warranty. They quoted over $850 to do the replacement but the part was on national backorder. After returning home I started doing research and found that this is happening at a very high rate and thus there is obviously a defect to this part. Toyota should be treating this is a defect, fixing the issue and providing the fix as a recall fix. I should not have to pay near $1000 to replace a defective part with another defective part that will most likely fail again. Since I am a very low mileage driver, from July 2023 to now I have only driven 4K miles, I have not replaced the part but continually monitor the engine temperature and for any coolant leakage. I know there is now a class action lawsuit but shouldn't the NHTSA get involved due to the number of failures on RAV4s and Corollas and the lack of responsibility being taken by Toyota?

Oct 9, 2024

When I was driving the car to work the automatic system (malfunction ) failed to restart in red light, i have to stop to restart (Awd malfunction } says to take to the dealer, I was driving back tothe dealership , they are saying car had zero coolant in syystem, raditor was leaking engine overheat to blow head gasket, a week before i was taking car dealership to state inspection and found only one issue that was back brake to change, no leak nothing they found, now i spent $7679 dollars to fix it i had all the proof what the dealerships try to say from the begining even I fixed, i am trying get rid of the vehicle now , it isonly 47454 miles when the incident happend.

The coolant bypass valve has leaked. It is available for inspection upon request, however this seems to be a larger ongoing problem across the country with this make, model and year. The check engine light did go on.

Sep 9, 2024

Engine: I got the 100k engine maintenance done. I replace my coolant and got an oil change. The engine maintenance required warning is still on my dashboard and will not go away because the diagnostic reader states I need a new coolant bypass valve. This is not apart of the factory maintenance, alot on rav4 owners are dealing with this, and it is very pricey. I think it is best for this type of situation to be recalled. Brakes: I got my front brakes replaced and I had issues with my front calipers. My mechanic said both calipers had holes in them and caused my brake fluid to leak which has affected my braking alot. It takes a long time to brake and I’ve experienced this even after I’ve paid alot of money to get my driver said caliper replaced, still need to get my passenger side replaced. My mechanic only uses toyota brand supplies so I’m not sure why there isn’t any longevity in the quality of supplies. I’ve only had the vehicle for 2 years.

The “Engine Maintenance Required” light came on, indicating issues with the coolant valve. This is become a common issue with the RAV4. If this is becoming a common issue for owners, it needs to be looked into!! I commute and my engine can overheat.

Sep 7, 2024

Defective coolant bypass valves on my 2019 Toyota RAV 4 have caused coolant to leak out of my vehicle’s closed-loop coolant system, harming its ability to properly regulate engine temperature. Eventually the message “Engine Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer” appeared on my dashboard indicating an issue with the engine. An internet search of this error message on the 2019-2023 Toyota RAV4 and Corolla models shows this is a widespread defect, affecting hundreds of Toyota owners. A class action lawsuit has been filed against Toyota regarding defective coolant bypass valves in the 2019-2023 Toyota RAV4 and Corolla models [XXX] et al. v. Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc) but Toyota has still not addressed this defect with a recall. Attached is a copy of the mechanic invoice I just paid to replace the defective coolant bypass valves on my 2019 RAV4 as the engine was not maintaining temperatures appropriately and in risk of total engine failure. Coolant valve failed ($700)shortly after warranty ended; extended warranty did not cover repair. Coolant valve then caused harness to be unusable causing for a $4500 part replacement to be required. During the whole process the Toyota dealership maintenance told me that the engine repair required alert was for normal maintenance and directed me to continue driving with it until my scheduled service every time after speaking with three different people and a mechanic at the dealerships maintenance shop. I was then told after bringing in the car that I could leave although the alert was still present. Finally after the maintenance supervisor looked at my car I was told it was not safe to have been driving. Toyota made a faulty part that they expected to break and still put it in vehicles. They then are not even aware/ do not acknowledge this widespread issue in 2019 and 2020 rav-4s and Carrolas. This defective part can cause the engine to have catastrophic issues as I was later told by the maintenance manager at a Toyota dealership. However, Toyota is leaving car owners and leaders out of thousands of dollars in repairs and not acknowledging or warning customers of a dangerous issue.

My 2019 Toyota RAV4 had been making a loud noise at random intervals when driving at high speeds such as freeway speeds. The dealer said they could not reproduce the issue. A couple years later at around 65000 miles my engine maintenance required message came up and would not go away. I took my vehicle to get the code read and there were no codes. I kept smelling fuel or different unpleasant smells when driving the vehicle. The engine maintenance required notice would turn on every single Time I used the AC. I later went to the Toyota dealer and they said the coolant bypass valve had been leaking and causing the engine maintenance notice to come up. This is a new vehicle that has been maintained properly and rarely driven far. The part and labor was $824.

Aug 30, 2024

I got an alert on my screen that would not go away. It said Engine Maintenance Required.” Went to auto one & there was 0 diagnostics associated with any codes. The guy said that it is the coolant bypass valve and that there is a class action in the works. He said most places charge $600 - $700 to replace and to hold on to my receipts.

Aug 28, 2024

Out of the sudden, the engine light started to display a message to check engine and overheating of this took place continuously. My Rav 4 only has 70k miles and I got it pre-certified from the dealer. This error is the Coolant Bypass Valve. This Valve is connected to a radiator hose.

Aug 24, 2024

A warning message appeared that stated: “Engine maintenance required - Visit your dealer”. At that time my vehicle had 38,796 miles on it. I contacted the Service Advisor at Toyota of Newnan who advised that it was likely the Coolant Bypass Valve on the engine and that they have had issues and repairs relating to that condition on their RAV4 and Corolla models. Their mechanics confirmed that this was the fault and that failing to have it repaired / replaced could result in engine overheating and engine seizing which could result in lose of vehicle control and endanger other vehicles on the road. Sensing the urgency, I had the repair / replacement completed at a cost of $846.68. Service advisor stated that many of the other vehicles with the same problem were still under warranty and repaired at no cost to the consumer. In my opinion this recurring defect among two Toyota model lines is occurring with enough regularity to warrant Toyota issuing at least a Service Bulletin and covering the cost of the repair and reimbursement to those that had to pay for the repair.

2019 RAV4 with 50120 miles engine maintenance light. It is a very common problem with Rav4s. coolant bypass valve...... My brother has same model same problem. Spent $600 to replace it. Toyota is charging $600-$1000 to replace defective part.

Aug 16, 2024

2019 rav4 at 59,000 miles engine maintenance required popped up. Went to the dealer, service advisor knew exactly that coolant control valve needed to be replaced because it being so common. I looked it up and coolant bypass valves in the 2019–2023 RAV4 and Corolla models. Some owners have reported that this defect could affect the vehicle's performance and longevity. Now I have to spend almost 1,000 for a repair I didn’t even cause because Toyota built a faulty valve.

Aug 12, 2024

Engine error message showed up after extended warranty expired by 600 miles. To fix the error message Toyota charge $871 total combined diagnostic, part and labor. The problem was coolant by pass valve shorted.

Toyota Rav4 2019 XLE - Engine Coolant Pump Performance/Stuck Off Error code P26CB milage 56,920 Toyota says this is NOT covered by the 5 year power train warranty. For years Toyota has manufactured this water pump that freezes up due to manufacturing defect that allows the magnetic base housing to rupture. Dealers want to replace entire pump (or at least charge for it) verses replacing the frozen plastic rotor. Dealer claims this is not covered under 5 year power train warranty. Why not? My car temp started climbing and took me hours to get home (10 miles) as I kept stopping for hours waiting for engine cool and sprinkling water from bottles over the engine and trans housing where it butts against the engine (silver brading). (This was late in weekend night - repair shops not open. I do see a recall investigation started (no recall yet) and just wanted to add my complaint to the issue. At first the temp gauge read normal but later started climbing. The engine light did come on the the DB2 said P26CB.

Coolant bypass valve

Aug 1, 2024

Upon reaching 50k miles, vehicle prompted a "engine maintenance required, please contact dealer" message. Upon inspection at the dealer, I was told this is a common issue in newer Toyota RAV4/Corollas and employees have been seeing this issue continuously. There is no way to bypass this message without getting the part replaced and the replacement runs anywhere ~$800 -$1000. How are so many people dealing with the same issue and Toyota has yet to issue a recall?

Jul 25, 2024

Coolant bypass valve failure The issue has been confirmed by a service center and was told a very common failure in my make & model of car. Warning light came on dash board and immediately had checked at service center. The fix is $900, which is frustrating because a class action lawsuit is being gathered for this same defect in my same model of car.

Hi there. As of June 17, 2024, there is a class action lawsuit against Toyota regarding issues with the coolant bypass valves in the 2019–2023 RAV4 and Corolla models. Some owners have reported that this defect could affect the vehicle's performance and longevity, potentially leading to expensive repairs. The plaintiffs allege that Toyota has violated the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act, and California's Unfair Competition Law, Consumers Legal Remedies Act, and Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act. They are seeking a jury trial, declaratory and injunctive relief, and punitive damages. I encountered the same issue on July 3, 2024, and visited Toyota Scott Clark (Charlotte), where I was charged $129 for diagnostics and $835.60 for further service to fix the problem. I am not willing to pay for this service, and Toyota has refused to cover the cost. I am joining the class action lawsuit against Toyota.

Coolant bypass valve

Jul 21, 2024

My engine maintenance light will not shut off due to a engine coolant bypass valve circuit short to battery. I also have warm fluid dripping on my feet when ac is on. The dealer says water under the dash is from from recalled roof rails. There has been a recall for code that pops up on my mechanic Toyota number20TA04. Dealer says he does haven't code so toyota hasnt issued any issues or re all for engine bypass valve. Toyota now has a class action law suit for this part. I can't afford $700 repair, can't see the messages or my speed due to the engine maintenance required on my screen which can't be reset. This is dangerous and can cause the need to have engine replaced, start engine fires. Toyota has known this issue for 5 yrs and needs to be held accountable.

Engine maintenance required per dealership it is the coolant bypass valve. Reason for failed per Toyota “bad luck” appears to be a class action suit filed for this issue current mileage 72,384

Coolant Bypass Valve Failure Engine Maintenance Required: See Dealer message appears on the drive screen when driving and you can't remove it- which means you can't see your digital speed or what you are setting your cruise at. The failure of this valve will cause the car to overheat which will lead to radiator/engine damage if not taken care of immediately. This part needs to be recalled!!!! RECALL THE TOYOTA COOLANT BYPASS VALVE! It is a faulty part that is failing in all 2019-2020 Toyota models. Mine is a 2019 RAV4. The part is plastic and is failing across the board. It Is costing $996.00 to have this problem diagnosed and fixed so I can drive my car again. I am a teacher and this is a substantial amount of money for a plastic part that should have never been used in the first place. Toyota needs to be held responsible for its cheap and faulty parts. I didn't know if I was going to make it to the dealership or not.

Engine maintenance required notification came on - told it was due to the coolant bypass valve circuit shorting to the battery

Jul 11, 2024

Known issue and reported by many others. Coolant bypass valve needs to be replaced around 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Occurs when turning on AC. Engine maintenance required sign pops up and cannot remove which does not allow driver to see speedometer leading to unsafe driving speeds.

Jul 10, 2024

A “Engine Maintenance Required” notification came up on dash boards. When car was taken to dealership and a diagnosis was made they stated that the engine coolant bypass valve was damaged and needed to be replaced. Upon research online it appears that Toyota would be recalling over 44,000 vehicles of the makes RAV4 and Corolla ranging from the manufacturer years 2019-2023. The issue with these vehicles states that potential of a crack forming in the engine, a result of a manufacturing error. Coolant or oil could leak from the crack, leading to the engine stalling, overheating, or possibly catching fire. This issue can be found within several articles. The dealership is wanting me to pay $787+ tax for an issue that appears to be a manufactured issue which later I may not be refunded.

Jul 10, 2024

Coolant Bypass Valve Defect. Toyota sold me a 2019 RAV 4 knowing there are problems with coolant bypass valve. Toyota RAV4s and Corollas is “insufficiently manufactured and/or designed” as it can crack and leak coolant. Once a leak begins, the coolant comes into contact with an electrical connector near the valve and corrodes and damages the component, the filing says. Once this occurs, a vehicle’s engine can no longer communicate with the coolant bypass valve during operation, the suit states.

Jul 9, 2024

A message popped up on my dash "Engine Maintenance Required - See Dealer". After further research this is a known issue with the Toyota Rav4s. The coolant bypass valve gets stuck open/closed. I took it into Toyota and before they even looked under my hood, he read the message on the dash and said "I know what it is". After paying $742.16, it was fixed. My local mechanic was not aware of this issue, so I had to go through Toyota directly. If someone cannot afford $700-$1,000 repair, they risk their engine overheating. Toyota is aware of this issue and they have not recalled this part in their vehicles that is consistently failing.

Toyota RAV4 2019, Coolant Bypass Valve issue. The car began displaying the message “engine maintained required visit dealer”

Jun 17, 2024

my Toyota RAV4 2019, At around 44500 miles a messaged started to showing up, message was "Engine Maintenance Required" "Visit your Dealer", the message cannot be disregarded, it blocked important part of the dashboard. No other warning light or failure lights were on. Upon taking the vehicle to the Dealer, agent mentioned it could be a non reseted counter for the regular 5000 miles next service reminder, however such maintenance wasn't due, after check by additional person, technician and scan, it turned out to be the bypass valve sticking, code found P268115 and suggested repair for around $900, since vehicle is no longer under the limited warranty cost would have to be covered by the client. Agent told has to be done other wise cooling system for the engine could be at fault causing overheating, and ended up on a mayor engine failure by overheating. It doesn't seem to be a normal failure found on the users manual, hence could be a possible manufacturing fault which Toyota is not covering.

Engine maintenance is required sign when AC is on.

Jun 12, 2024

An “Engine Maintenance Required” signal came on my dash and turns out the coolant bypass valve needs to be replaced. Come to find out almost everyone else with this car has the same problem around 50,000 miles. I bought this car used and have had it for less than a week and the repair is at least $600. Super disappointed.

Jun 10, 2024

I got a check engine light p2681 for coolant bypass valve open. I have a scanner and I work for Lithia Dodge of Billings, MT. Upon some research online, many more people all have the same part going bad because of the same defective part going bad. Dealers are charging anywhere between $600-$900 to fix this defect. With so many defective valves going bad across the United States, this should be a recall.

"Engine Maintenance Required Visit Your Dealer" warning that would not clear for a defective coolant bypass valve. No way to know that this was the issue without taking the vehicle to the dealer. Car began to overheat presenting a danger when driving distances to myself and other drivers.

Jun 1, 2024

Engine maintenance required, visit your local dealer warning light would not turn off. This in itself is a safety issue as it is distracting and disables on screen speed, miles left until empty, and other helpful driving information from being displayed in view. Visited dealer and was told COOLANT BYPASS VALVE was defective and that continuing to drive the vehicle without replacing could cause blown head gasket and engine failure. Researched issue and came upon numerous threads including several Reddit threads explaining and detailing the severity and widespread issue that this is for regularly maintained RAV4s. This should be a recall.

May 29, 2024

"Engine maintenance required" warning light came on and unable to bypass at all, leaving driver unable to read odometer or speedometer while driving. Had to go to the dealership 2 days in a row before they finally addressed the warning. Service staff informed this is indicating the coolant bypass valve is damaged or has failed. Also informed that this is a very common issue regardless of location, mileage, or usage of vehicle and will happen to all RAV4 owners of certain years eventually. A quick google search will show this is an extremely common issue and a result of using inferior quality parts in manufacturing. Toyota should recall this issue asap and reimburse drivers as many people have had the same problem. Had to pay over $600 at dealership to address issue that Toyota's manufacturing caused and to be able to have full usage of vehicle again. This is a dangerous issue if drivers without financial means to address this problem are driving without being able to use their vehicle display tools among other issues regarding the engine.

“Engine maintenance required” maintenance light on dashboard. Very common issue within RAV4s. This message blocks the odometer on the dashboard when visible. It shows warning lights on the display as well. The part that needs replacing is a “coolant bypass valve”. My dealer wanted nearly $1000 to replace this part, and told me this part was on back order nationwide. My car begins to overheat after 1.5 hours of driving. The dealer said to pull over when operating my vehicle and it begins to overheat. This problem is an inconvenience as I commute to work in a busy city. This problem was first presented last week after my scheduled oil change with my local dealer. The next day (5/17/2024) the light came on my dashboard—unable to be removed. I first brought it into the dealer for a diagnostic on 5/20/2024, this is when they diagnosed a coolant bypass valve. I brought it back to the dealer today (5/23/2024) to have the part replaced, and was told it was on back order. I am afraid to operate my vehicle for long periods of time due to this issue. It has become a major inconvenience in my personal life this week, causing me to call out of work twice. This needs to be addressed by Toyota immediately.

May 22, 2024

Engine maintenance required warning notice came on. Researched showed this to be a failure of the coolant bypass valve. It is a well known and documented problem with can lead to the engine overheating and seizing. Called dealership and they were well aware of issue and wanted $1,100. to repair. My car only has 46K miles on it. Toyota should issue a recall.

May 20, 2024

A warning notice displayed on my vehicle indicating that "engine maintenance required" "visit your dealer". The warning message will not clear from the display. A certified auto mechanic downloaded the code which indicated that the issue was a failed Coolant Bypass Valve. This part is a known and frequent issue with Toyota's and there is such a high demand for this part that it is on backorder nationwide. The earliest that this part is available may be July or later. TSB #TTT069922 has been issued regarding this prevalent issue. This problem directly impacts air conditioning performance. Due to the long wait for the part, air conditioning will not cool to the level needed for the long hot summer ahead. Toyota should consider issuing a recall for this problem.

“Engine Maintenance Required” appeared on the screen. After an internet search I took the vehicle to Passport Toyota in Marlow Heights, MD. Dealer claims “Engine coolant bypass valve” needs to be replaced. They charged me $681.72 for the repair. May 12, 2024

I bought this car last year on October 4th from carmax (mileage was 62k at the time of purchase). I started to have problems the next month on November 6th with the brakes which was rusted and had to replace the pads. That was very dangerous and could have hurt myself driving around the heavy rain at the time. I was scared for my safety and others wellbeing so I took the car to the dealership. Their mechanic checked the car and told me that this wasn't fixed or checked since April 2023 before I bought the car in october 2023. I had problems with the infotainment system. the map navigation for my android and iPhone doesnt work anymore. the mechanic at the dealership fixed the rear break pads and discs but couldnt fix the infotainment system even after updating the system. He issued me a 250 dollar refund and was charged 680 dollars for the rest of the job. Another issue happened on March 2024 for the front barring needed to be replaced from a carmax mechanic shop. Paid 380 to fix. This month I got a message saying " engine maintenance required, go to dealership". I took the car to the mechanic and explained that the computer code error message means the coolant valve is defective. I'm thinking of going to the dealer tomorrow up until I found out the car never got the recall repaired from this website. Could this be the reason why I'm having this may problems? The car hasn't been inspected by police or insurance, only the toyota manufacturer on November 6th who told me about the car not getting fixed since April 2023. I have the invoice of all these repairs done. The latest mechanic that told me about the coolant valve being defective thought I needed to change my oil. He did change the oil and charged me 189 dollars. I'm planning on taking the mechanic to fix that problem since the toyota dealership was gonna charge me to fix the transmission fluid which isn't the problem. I will upload the receipt for the oil change job.

#16260-F0010 B/0 PART COOLANT BY-PASS LOST Vehicle is a 2019 RAV4, odometer reads 37849. I've had a persistent "Engine Maintenance Required" notification on the MID screen for the last 1500 miles or so, literally the day after getting a scheduled service at the dealer. I initially thought it was just the service reminder, so I didn't think much of it, and just ignored it. But eventually it became so annoying that I tried to clear the notification, and couldn't-- and upon further research, it turns out the notification is probably the result of a leaking coolant bypass valve. I haven't noticed any loss in coolant, haven't experienced any abnormal engine temps, and haven't had any CELs. I've also noticed that the notification only comes on now when I have the A/C turned on.

Received the message on my 2019 Toyota Rav 4: ENGINE MAINTENANCE REQUIRED. VISIT YOUR DEALER. Diagnostic: Coolant Bypass Valve REPLACEMENT needed. Factory warranty does not cover. After researching this issue I am shocked that there has not been a recall placed for this, there are hundreds of threads with people experiencing this same issue with their Toyota RAV4. This is over a $800 repair that should be covered by the manufacturer as it is an obvious equipment malfunction due to the manufacture with the overwhelming number of others having this same issue.

"maintenance required visit your dealer" message came on at ~84k miles, continued to come on intermittently thereafter despite resetting maintenance reminder. Checked error codes and discovered issue was a faulty coolant bypass valve. Upon researching this issue, learned that numerous Toyota owners have experienced the same issue on various years/models and that dealership service centers are well aware of the problem. Despite this, Toyota has not issued any TSBs, or offered to compensate customers for replacement of this obviously defective part.

I went to orileys to see is they could tell me what was wrong and they were unable to read it since it was not a check engine light. The orileys employee told me I had to take it to a Toyota dealership to find out exactly what was wrong with it. I contacted my local dealership and they confirmed that it was a coolant bypass valve that failed and that he has seen this warning pop up on at least 10 Rav 4’s and that every time it is the coolant bypass valve that has failed.

Coolant bypass valve failure, which can result in Engine overheating or complete seizure, which can endanger passengers in a vehicle. “Engine Maintenance Required “ message shows up on dash and cannot be cleared away. South Bay Toyota rep acknowledged that this has been an issue for model year 2019.

Aug 7, 2023

“Engine maintenance required - Visit Dealer” warning came on. Vehicle was diagnosed with needing a new coolant bypass valve. Researching online, and in Toyota groups, this is a known and widespread issue. The dealer stated they have had many of these repairs come in, yet Toyota has not issued a recall or TSB. This is a repair costing between $500-$1000. That's a healthy sum of money to be spending on a fairly new car.

Aug 5, 2023

My Engine maintenance notification came on this week and I took my car for diagnosis. It was determined that it is my the coolant bypass valve was the issue and this seems to be an issue for RAV4s. I researched Recalls for this issue and found a recall code 20TA04 for 2019 - 2020 RAV4 Toyota .I currently drive a 2019 RAV4 but this recall doesn't show under my VIN # But I am having the same issue. Its frustrating when this is a known issue that the dealership is aware of but wants charge large sums of money to fix a problem that is not normal wear and tear. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2020/RCMN-20V064-1370.pdf

Check engine light on for coolant bypass valve, apparently car is over heating ?

Aug 1, 2023

Engine maintenance notification came on and car was taken in for diagnosis. It seem the coolant bypass valve was the issue and this seems to be an issue for Camry's, Corrolas, and the RAV4s. Toyota wanted to charge an outrageous amount to fix this when it is a known issue across the board and is widely talked about online through research.

Jul 29, 2023

Vehicle had been in for routine maintenance 6 weeks prior. Around 46k miles, the check engine light came on requiring me to bring it back to the Toyota dealer. I wasn't able to bring it to the dealer for about 6 days after it came on due to appointment availabilitly. Once I brought it in, they told me the coolant bypass valve had a circuit short and needed to be replaced. This part was replaced and is unable to be inspected. This is a safety issue especially during the summer as this short could cause the engine to overheat.

Jul 25, 2023

2019 Vehicle with less than 45K miles Got a message to take the car to the dealership. Dealership tells me that the coolant bypass valve needs to be replaced. Dealership representative tells me this is a common issue with cars like mine and the part is back ordered for an indeterminate amount of time. After doing some research, I see this is a major issue with quite a few Toyota models, not just Rav4.

Jul 24, 2023

Warning Engine Maintenance light popped up on 2019 RAV4 Adventure, with notification to see dealership. Took vehicle in and was informed that the coolant bypass valve has internal circuit failure. Vehicle has has 23,000 miles, this should not be happening to a relatively new car. Appears to be a widespread defect per the Internet: [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Jul 20, 2023

The problem for Toyota is well known on the engine bypass valves. Several Toyotas owners are experiencing this issue on replacement, even service team members are suprised this part isn’t recalled yet.

Jul 17, 2023

Engine maintenance required visit your dealer alert on screen. Seems to happen when the A/C is in use. Took it to a Toyota dealership for a diagnostic test and they said it was the Engine coolant bypass valve. The diagnostic test was $180. They mentioned the part was on backorder and I have been waiting for the part for a month now. The alert will not go away at all if the A/C is in use. The dealership mentioned this has been happening frequently with RAV 4s. It will cost approximately $771 to repair and $189 for a coolant flush.

Getting the following issue: 2019 RAV4 : P268115 Engine Coolant Bypass valve circuit short to battery or open This is happening to a lot of other cars - it seems like Toyota has a faulty coolant valve

Jun 19, 2023

Engine maintenance required light came on. Vehicle was diagnosed with needing a new coolant bypass valve. Researching online and in Toyota groups, this is a widespread issue. Even the dealer said they have had many of these repairs yet Toyota has not issued a recall. This is a repair with a cost of $500-$1000 and a safety concern but Toyota has not addressed it.

Jun 11, 2023

On May 13, 2023, ‘Engine Maintenance Required-Visit Your Dealer’ warning appeared on my console. I immediately brought the vehicle to the Toyota dealer. I was told the Coolant Bypass Valve went bad. This was at roughly 45,000 miles. I had previously purchased a ‘No deductible extended warranty’ from this same Toyota dealer. Now they tell me this ‘Valve’ is not covered under warranty. I was charged $887.99 for repair of this ‘Valve’. As this could cause the engine to overheat, causing additional damage, it most certainly is a safety issue.

Jun 7, 2023

Engine Bypass Coolant Valve. Issue could cause coolant leak and cause car to overheat. Issue confirmed by Toyota dealership. Also many individuals confirming the same issue. Component inspected by dealership. No issues until component failed and now a constant engine repair message.

2019 Toyota Rav4 Premium Engine Maintenance light visit dealer popped up on the vehicle. Researching online apparently the coolant bypass valve malfunctioning is a recurring issue with the 2019 Toyota Rav4, not sure why a recall has not been done yet for this vehicle. Went to the dealer to have the vehicle looked at, before having it diagnosed the service person stated it is probably the coolant bypass valve and that the part is on back order, vehicle was put on the machine to have it diagnosed and confirmed that the Coolant Bypass Valve will need to be replaced. The only warning light that it gave me was Engine Maintenance light came on. The service advisor said the vehicle is perfectly fine to drive till they get the part in, which still concerns me because of the engine. I am having to pay out of pocket to get it repaired but after talking to the service people and researching online from other people, there really should be a recall for the Coolant Bypass Valve.

We have a 2019 Toyota Rav4, win VIN JTMK1RFV8KD******, about a week ago this message appeared: "ENGINE MAINTENANCE REQUIRED. VISIT YOUR DEALER." The Mileage was still 74,104. After a week, I took it to a mechanic shop; I had the oil changed and discovered that the message cannot be removed. I had the vehicle system scanned and one of the items that came up is "Engine and engine cooling". My mechanic went on line to find out if there's a RECALL issue on my vehicle with its VIN. There are 8 Recall issues on the KELLY BLUE BOOK website but not on the Toyota website. We called the dealership and they confirmed that my VIN is not included in the list. Toyota is charging $180 or more just to Diagnose. WHY do we have to pay for the Manufacturer's defects?

May 8, 2023

The Coolant Bypass Valve went bad, and apparently it’s been happening frequently to a lot of peoples Toyotas. Also unsafe because I have to wait for the part, which is on back order, because so many of them are faulty. This need to me recalled!

The engine on my Rav4 suddenly stopped without any notification while I was driving it on the freeway. I could have been severely injured from the risk of being rear ended by vehicles behind me. I have experienced this twice now, and both times, I have been on a busy highway in the middle of rush hour traffic. While driving, the engine would start sputtering and the vehicle will jolt and shake, eventually causing a warning message to appear that says power steering low, engine shutting off, place vehicle in Park. Then, when I turn the engine off, and try to restart it, it would flash a message that read Not ready to drive. After towing the vehicle to a service department, the vehicle would start up like normal, and the techs could not get vehicle to duplicate the issue. No codes would come up when they place it on a scanner, either. I researched the issue online, and it appears I am not the only one who has experienced this issue with the Rav4. Please reference https://www.rav4world.com/threads/engine-stopped-steering-power-low.323916/ This incident happened twice, once on 3/6 and again on 3/8. I thought the issue was fixed after having my vehicle towed on 3/6 to Freeman Toyota Service where they determined the issue was due to a recall on the fuel pump. However, the incident occurred again on 3/8, and I had to have the vehicle towed as the engine shut off while I was driving on the freeway blocking one lane of traffic on the interchange that connects one freeway to another. I was very fearful of other vehicles crashing into me as some of them were squeezing by between my vehicle and the retaining wall to get around me. It took the wrecker over an hour to get to me due to high traffic time. I have uploaded 2 tow bills I had to pay, and the service invoice for the recall work done. My vehicle is currently at another Toyota Service department where they are telling me they are unable to duplicate the issue.

Oct 6, 2022

I received an alert on my vehicle that engine maintenance was required. I conducted a code reader scan of the vehicle. There was no codes that were activated or shown. I took my vehicle to a Toyota dealership. I was advise that my vehicle which only has 42k miles had a bybass coolant value issue. I further saw YouTube videos and read forums on my vehicle and the issue. A lot of individuals are reporting similar issues with their vehicle. An interesting remark, which I noticed was that a lot of the Rav4s from 2019 and newer had the same issue. These cars are not even above the 100k miles, which makes me wonder and worry how safe will my vehicle be. The part is on backorder around 1 month to 3 months. My vehicle begin to display the message around 40k miles. I believe a recall should occur.

It happens when I shift from driving to park or drive to park, and if I’m standing idle it will slip into mud and sand mode and switch off a few minutes later. Dealership says it’s the sensors but I had my sensors checked and there is no issue there.

My vehicle 2019 Toyota Rav 4 Limited has transmission and engine issues as well as a roof rack leak. I have reported this to Toyota via 1-800-331-4331, which was not helpful. Israel stated that there is nothing that Toyota Cooperate can do about this issue. Both the transmission and engine had been previously repaired at Toyota of Laredo to no avail. Currently my vehicle is awaiting repair at Cavander Toyota in San Antonio. No loaner was provided despite me being a home health therapist who needs her vehicle to work.

I got a “Engine Maintenance Required” warning message. I check with the dealer, the dealer inspected and told about a faulty coolant bypass valve which the dealership told us a common problem for Toyota RAV4 model year 2019,2020,2021. The dealer told to always check if the engine temperature is shooting. They asked me to order the part and it took close to a week to get the part and then to replace it. A faulty coolant bypass valve risked my vehicle of a failure of the cooling system and so the engine. I had to pay $126.25 for the part and $658.08 labor charge to replace the part. Since it is a common problem the manufacturer has to recall and replace the faulty part and pay the cost of the part and labor for replacing the faulty part.

After a recall repair order was issued, the repairs were made and now accelerating under load or uphill, the vehicle will accelerate and then bogs down or chokes (the vehicle then loses speed and no longer accelates). The issue has occurred several times while accelerating to freeway speeds on freeway on-ramps (it’s a safety hazard). 1st attempt to repair by the dealer was made on 11/22/2021. 2nd attempt by the same dealership is pending for today 12/08/2021 at 1:30pm.

The contact received a recall notification for an unknown recall in regards to a humming sound coming from the transfer case of the vehicle; however, the dealer diagnosed that no issues were found and informed the contact that the recall repair did not need to be completed on the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving and he had been hearing abnormal bumping sounds from underneath of the vehicle. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 3.

MY BOUGHT MY VEHICLE BRAND NEW ON DECEMBER 10, 2019. ON OCTOBER 29, 2020 THE BATTERY STOPPED WORKING WITH ONLY 10K MILES. I CALLED TOYOTA AND TOLD THEM MY BATTERY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TOYOTA TOLD ME TO JUMP START THE CAR AND DRIVE THERE TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. I ADVISED MY CAR WAS STUCK IN THE GARAGE AND WE WOULD NEED SOMEONE TO TOW THE CAR. WHEN THE 'TOW' ARRIVED IT WAS ONLY A MAINTENANCE WORKER THAT JUMP STARTED THE VEHICLE AND SAID I WOULD NEED TO DRIVE IT MYSELF THERE. THE WORKER ADVISED ME OF THE DEFECTIVE BATTERIES FOR RAV4 AND OTHER MODELS. ONCE MY CAR WAS TURNED ON AND OUT OF THE GARAGE, I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY WHEN MY POWER STEERING LOCK WARNING SIGNAL FLASHED. I CALLED AND EXPLAINED I WAS AN HOUR FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND NEEDED MY CAR TOWED TO THEM AND THE WARRANTY I PAID FOR SHOULD COVER IT. SUBSEQUENT TO GETTING MY VEHICLE BACK, I RECEIVED PAPERWORK IN THE MAIL WITH A RECALL NOTICE ON 12/9/2020 EXPLAINING THE POSSIBILITY OF MY VEHICLE STALLING WHILE DRIVING, WHICH COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH. I PULLED OUT MY PAPERWORK FROM THE TECH AND ON THE BOTTOM NOTES I NOTICED THE TECH WROTE 'INTERIM STATUS' EXPLAINING THAT I WAS ADVISED THERE IS CURRENTLY AN INTERIM RECALL NOTICE FOR THE VEHICLE, BUT CURRENTLY NO REMEDY. REMOVING THE KEY WILL TURN OFF THE ENGINE. I AM OF THE OPINION THAT THIS A CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUE: 1. THE ENGINE COULD OVERHEAT IN HOT SUMMER AND MAY EVEN CATCH ON FIRE 2. ANYONE CAN DRIVE THE CAR AWAY WITHOUT THE KEY. LOW OR TOTALLY NO KEY SIGNAL MEANS THE DRIVER IS NOT NEAR TO THE CAR. THE ENGINE SHOULD NOT BE RUNNING AT ALL. FOR THE LEAST, THERE SHOULD BE SHOULD BE SOME LOUD ALERT. THE RAV4 BUILT-IN TECHNOLOGY HAS AN AUTO SHUT OFF FEATURE ON ACC MODE AFTER CERTAIN PERIOD AND REMOTE ENGINE START/STOP FEATURE. ONE CANNOT START THE CAR WITHOUT THE KEY NEARBY. WHY CANNOT TOYOTA INCORPORATE THE AUTO OFF FEATURE ON THE KEY SIGNAL LEVEL, I.E. BELOW CERTAIN KEY SIGNAL LEVEL TURN THE ENGINE OFF AUTOMATICALLY. HOWEVER, ON 7/20/19 THE OIL IS NOW 1/2 INCH ABOVE THE MARK SET BY THE DEALER ON 7/5. CONCERNED THIS MIGHT BE PROBLEMATIC FOR ALL RAVS. WILL BE CONTACTING DEALER AGAIN FOR POSSIBLE RESOLUTION.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN I-25 SOUTH OF DENVER, CO IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AT 75 MPH, THE ENGINE ABRUPTLY SHUT OFF. I SUDDENLY HAD NO ENGINE POWER, POWER BRAKES OR POWER STEERING. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER, BUT CAME CLOSE TO HITTING OR BEING HIT BY SEVERAL VEHICLES. WHEN WE MADE IT TO THE SHOULDER ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS AND MESSAGES WERE APPEARING ON THE DASH. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT A FEW MINUTES I RESTARTED IT, AND IT DID RUN, THOUGH ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE STILL ON. THERE WAS A DEALERSHIP 9 MILES FROM MY LOCATION, SO I SLOWLY MADE MY TO ARAPAHOE TOYOTA. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND SAID THAT SOMETHING CAUSED THE FUEL TO BE SHUT OFF TO THE ENGINE. THEY DID NOT KNOW WHY, AND COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY SUSPECT IT IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE AS I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE LIGHT DOES NOT WORK INTERMITTENTLY. SINCE THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM, AND HAD NO LOANER CARS, THEY ESSENTIALLY TOLD ME TO COME BACK THE FOLLOWING MONDAY AND HOPE FOR THE BEST IN THE MEANTIME. SINCE I WAS HEADING TO VACATION THIS IS IMPRACTICAL, SO I WAS STUCK DRIVING A CAR I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE. MY NEXT STEP IS I AM TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP IN FORT COLLINS, CO, AND TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED AND THAT I WANT THE ISSUE RESOLVED, THE BRAKE LIGHT ELECTRICAL ISSUE FIXED, AND BE ASSURED THAT THE CAR IS SAFE. I'VE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE DIE WHILE DRIVING LIKE THAT, LET ALONE ONE WITH ONLY 4580 MILES. I'M APPREHENSIVE ABOUT DRIVING THE CAR 26 MILES IN THE MOUNTAINS TO THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP, AND SO FAR TOYOTA HAS BEEN NO HELP.

VEHICLE MAKES A GRINDING/WINDING/LURCHING NOISE WHILE ACCELERATING, BRAKING AND DURING NORMAL DRIVING. PROBLEM GETS WORSE EVERY DAY.

VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE WHEN PUSHING DOWN ON THE GAS PEDAL. THIS CAN OCCUR WHEN LEAVING A PARKING PLACE OR. FROM A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE ENGINE DOES NOT STOP RUNNING. IT HAS ONLY HAPPENED THREE TIMES, BUT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE TOYOTA DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THIS AT THE 5000 MILE INSPECTION AND THERE ARE NO CODES SET NOR DOES IT SET A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WHEN IT HAPPENS.
