WHILE I WAS TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH, THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE LOCKED UP MOMENTARILY AND LURCHED THE VEHICLE, THE VSC AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND A WARNING BUZZER WENT OFF. AFTER LOOKING INTO THINGS, THERE ARE KNOWN ISSUES WITH THE 2001 AND 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT CAUSE THIS EXACT THING TO HAPPEN TO PLENTY OF OTHER PEOPLE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE HAS ALREADY BEEN AN EVALUATION DONE ON THIS MATTER AND IT WAS RULED THAT THE SEVERITY OF THE ISSUE DOES NOT WARRANT A RECALL. WHY THERE IS NO RECALL BEING ISSUED ON THE MULTIPLE FAILURE POINTS IN THE VEHICLE'S SYSTEM AND PEOPLE ARE REQUIRED TO SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN REPAIRS FOR PARTS AND LABOR WHEN THE MANUFACTURER'S DESIGN DIDN'T LAST? I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FOR MY FATHER TO FEEL MORE SAFE IN, AND THAT IS THE LAST THING THAT HE FEELS WHILE DRIVING IT. I AM NOW REQUIRED TO DRIVE OUR AFFECTED VEHICLE AND HAVE TO BE CONSTANTLY PAYING ATTENTION SO THAT THE ABS SYSTEM DOESN'T SHOOT ME INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE.

THE VEHICLE STABILIZATION CONTROL TURNS ITSELF ON AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE DRIVING. HAS NO CORRELATION TO DRIVING CONDITIONS, TYPE OF ROADWAY, OR SPEED VEHICLE IS MOVING. THERE IS A BEEP AND THEN A PULL ON THE STEERING WHILE A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND SENSATION OCCURS. IT HAS GOTTEN SO BAD, THE CAR IS NOT DRIVABLE BECAUSE YOU CANNOT STOP. WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT ON A CITY STREET WITH NO ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS (RAIN, WET ROAD, ETC.) HAD ACCELERATED UP TO ABOUT 35MPH WHEN SUDDENLY THE TRAC OFF, VSC, AND SKID LIGHTS ILLUMINATED (POSSIBLY FLASHING) AND A WARNING BEEPING SOUND WENT OFF. THERE WAS A LOUD GRINDING METAL ON METAL SOUND AND THE CAR WAS SHUTTERING (VIBRATING). I IMMEDIATELY BEGIN TO DEPRESS THE BREAKS, AND WHILE THE CAR DID BEGIN TO SLOW FURTHER THAN IT ALREADY WAS, I DID NOT FEEL LIKE I COULD HAVE COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AS IF I HAD TOTAL CONTROL OF THE BREAKS. I LOOKED AHEAD TO SEE WHERE I COULD PULL INTO TO GET OFF THE ROAD WHEN THE LIGHTS/WARNING SOUND WENT OFF AND THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THIS WAS AFTER ABOUT 5-10 SECONDS. I DROVE FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES TO A GAS STATION TO GET GAS. THE VEHICLE SEEMED FINE. I WAS ONLY ABOUT 5 MORE MINUTES TO HOME SO I CONTINUED DRIVING. DURING THAT 5 MINUTE DRIVE IT HAPPENED A SECOND TIME. THE EXACT SAME BEHAVIOR, I WAS ALREADY SLOWING DOWN APPROACHING A RED LIGHT AND WAS TRAVELING PROBABLY 15-20MPH WHEN IT HAPPENED. AFTER ABOUT 5 SECONDS THE BEHAVIOR STOPPED AND THE VEHICLE RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. I WAS ONLY ABOUT 30 SECONDS FROM HOME. CONTINUED HOME AND HAVEN'T DRIVEN THE VEHICLE SINCE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE TO HAVE YOUR BREAK SYSTEM ACTIVATE UNCONTROLLABLE. IT WAS TERRIFYING AT 35 MPH, I CAN'T IMAGE WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN AT 65MPH. A FEW SECONDS OF RESEARCH SHOWS HUNDREDS OF OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM. SOME PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED PULLING THE FUSE FOR THE ABS SYSTEM TO DISABLE IT, BECAUSE NOT HAVING IT IS SAFER THAN YOUR BREAKING SYSTEM UNCONTROLLABLY GOING OFF ON YOU. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND FIXED BEFORE THERE IS A FATAL ACCIDENT!

TWICE, ONCE IN NOV. 2019 AND AGAIN N MAR,.2020, THE ELECTRONIC SKID CONTROL HAS ENGAGED WITHOUT WARNING AND WITHOUT REASON, CAUSING ME TO NEARLY LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR. BOTH OCCASIONS OCCURRED ON INTERSTATE 40 NEAR RALEIGH , NC. THE WEATHER WAS CLEAR AND THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE DRY, SOLID (NO SAND OR GRAVEL) SURFACE. WHEN THE SYSTEM ENGAGED AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED TO THE RIGHT NEARLY UNCONTROLLABLY, THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGED (GRINDING METAL-ON-METAL SOUND0, AND THE ENGINE SPEED WAS REDUCED. IN ADDITION, THE TRAC AND VSC ICONS LIT UP ON THE DASH AND THE RE WAS A BEEPING SOUND. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. HAD THERE BEEN A VEHICLE IN THE LANE TO MY RIGHT, I COULD NOT HAVE AVOIDED HITTING THEM. FORTUNATELY, NO OTHER VEHICLES WERE INVOLVED AND THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT, BUT THIS WAS PURELY LUCK. AFTER THE FIRST EVENT I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MARK JACOBSON TOYOTA IN DURHAM, NC ON NOV 14, 2019 ( I HAVE THE SERVICE RECEIPT.) THEY STATED THAT THEY "COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM" AND SAID THAT THEY DID A "ZERO POINT CALIBRATION." I HAVE NOT HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED AFTER THE SECOND EPISODE SINCE IT HAPPENED JUST YESTERDAY. A SURVEY OF THE INTERNET REVEALS MULTIPLE OTHER FIRST GENERATION SEQUOIA OWNERS REPORTING THE SAME THING, BUT THERE IS NO REPORTED SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. THE ONLY "FIX" THAT WORKS CONSISTENTLY IS TO REMOVE THE ABS SYSTEM FUSE; HARDLY A SOLUTION, SINCE IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO ME TO DISABLE A CRITICAL AUTOMOTIVE SAFETY SYSTEM. NEVERTHELESS, GIVEN THE SEVERITY OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE ABS SYSTEM ENERGIZED, I CAN UNDERSTAND THAT DISABLING THE ABS SYSTEM IS THE LESSER OF TWO EVILS. I WOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR YOU HELP IN FINDING A SAFE SOLUTION TO THIS DANGEROUS SITUATION.

SOMETIMES THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IDLING AND STATIONARY. I AM AFRAID THAT I MIGHT GET INTO AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF THE SUDDEN DECELERATION ESPECIALLY WHEN I AM DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY ON THE WAY TO THE OFFICE 5 DAYS A WEEK. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS COVERING 2003 SEQUOIA MODELS BUT DID NOT INCLUDE 2001 SEQUOIA MODELS. I BELIEVE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD INCLUDE 2001 MODELS IN THE RECALL BEFORE PEOPLE GET INTO ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM.

TOYOTA RUST ISSUE ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA V8 SR5. USED TO TRANSPORT FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND CHILDREN, BUT NO LONGER SAFE DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST AND INABILITY TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE WHEN SLOWING AT HIGHER SPEEDS. VEHICLE VEERS TO RIGHT AND LEFT UNCONTROLLABLY. TODAY, I ALMOST SIDESWIPED ANOTHER VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS GOING AROUND 60 MPH AND SLOWED TO EXIT AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE AND ENDED UP IN A DITCH. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO LIFT DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST. RECOMMENDED TO HAVE THE FRAME REPLACED, BUT THAT'S WELL BEYOND THE COST I'M WILLING TO PAY. RESEARCH TELLS ME THAT THIS IS A CONSISTENT PROBLEM FOR THESE VEHICLES AND TOYOTA SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT -- IF NOT PAY TO HAVE NEW FRAMES DONE OR REIMBURSE PEOPLE FOR THE MANY WHO HAVE THESE ISSUES. THIS VEHICLE HAS ONLY 154,000 MILES AND IS OTHERWISE IN IMMACULATE SHAPE AND CONDITION DUE TO PROPER MAINTENANCE. THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE RESOLVED QUICKLY BY TOYOTA. I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE FOR THE REASONS I'VE MENTIONED. EXCESSIVE RUST AND INABILITY TO CONTROL A VEHICLE IS NOT SOMETHING I SHOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH ON A VEHICLE THAT HAS LOW MILES FOR THE MAKE/MODEL, AND HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED. PLEASE EXPEDITE SO I CAN RECOVER FINANCIALLY FROM THIS OR HAVE A VEHICLE THAT I CAN FEEL SAFE USING AGAIN WITH MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

DEALER SAID IT WAS A YAW STEERING SENSOR. PART WAS UNOBTAINABLE OR POSSIBLE WITHIN 8 WEEKS, AND NO AFTER MARKET PARTS AVAILABLE. MECHANIC RECOMMENDED VEHICLE NOT BE DRIVEN. WE HAVE SEEN SEVERAL SUGGESTIONS AS TO THE FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM LIKE THE YAW RATE SENSOR BEING REPLACED. THE COST OF THE PART IS $568.00 WITHOUT THE INSTALL COST.THIS PROBLEM IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IF IT OCCURS AT THE WRONG TIME, A PREVENTABLE TRAGEDY IS GOING TO OCCUR. I HAVE SEEN WELL OVER 50 COMPLAINTS ON THIS FROM OTHER OWNERS AND A CLOSED NHTSA INVESTIGATION ON THIS EXACT ISSUE. THEY RECALLED THE 2003 SEQUOIA FOR THE SAME ISSUE. THE PROBLEM APPEARS MORE PRONOUNCED IN A TURN AND OVER MORE ROUGH ROAD (NOTHING CRAZY, ASPHALT HIGHWAY). I DO NOT NOTICE THE SOUND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I SUSPECT THAT THIS CONDITION MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE ATC OR VSC SYSTEM. I TRIED TO DISCONNECT THE VSC SYSTEM HOWEVER I STILL WOULD OCCASIONALLY GET THE NOISE. THIS IS SIMILAR TO A PROBLEM I HAD 6 YEARS AGO: WHILE IN MOTION, ENTERING A DOWNHILL TURN, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE UNCONTROLLABLY. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS THAT THE ENTIRE WHEEL ASSEMBLY WAS SHEARING OFF. THE CONDITION WAS MORE COMMON IN A TURN, BUT COULD BE INDUCED IN A BUMP. I HAD RECENTLY INSTALLED NEW TIRES AND A SUSPENSION SO THE DEALERSHIP SUGGESTED THAT THE SLIGHTLY OVERSIZED TIRE (P265/75R-16) WAS HE CAUSE. I REPLACED THE BRAND NEW PIRELLI TIRES WITH THE FACTORY SIZE MICHELLIN'S HOWEVER THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. I HAD THE VEHICLE RE-INSPECTED AND THE TECHNICIANS STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A WORN RACK & PINION ASSEMBLY. I PAID TO HAVE A NEW ASSEMBLY INSTALLED; THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN TEST DRIVEN IT EXHIBITED THE SAME SYMPTOMS WHEN I DROVE IT. AFTER RETURNING TO THE DEALER I HAD THE HEAD MECHANIC TEST DRIVE WITH ME; HE STATED THAT THIS WAS A NORMAL VSC OPERATING CONDITION. I INSISTED TO SPEAK WITH SOMEONE HIGHER UP AND HAPPENED TO CONNECT WITH A TOYOTA FACTORY ENGINEER FROM JAPAN. AFTER A TEST DRIVE HE CONCLUDED THE PROBLEM WAS PROBABLY SOMETHING IN THE VSC SYSTEM. AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION THEY DISCOVERED A SENSOR WAS BAD. I HAD TO PAY FOR THIS REPAIR AS WELL. NOW, I AM BEGINNING TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS, COINCIDENTALLY, AFTER A TIRE REPLACEMENT USING A PIRELLI P265-75R-16 AND NEW BILSTEIN SHOCKS.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ABOUT 30-45 MPH THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY JERKED TO THE LEFT AS IF SOMEONE ELSE TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL. IF I HADN'T MOVED FAST IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A MAJOR ACCIDENT IN THE NEIGHBORING LANE. THERE WAS A BEEP AT THE SAME TIME AND THE TRAC LIGHT AND VSC TRAC LIGHT WENT ON. UPON FURTHER TESTING THE YAW RATE SENSOR HAD A FAIL CODE OF C1234 AND THE CODE C1363 BOOSTER PEDAL FORCE SWITCH VAULT WAS ALSO AFFECTED. OUR YAW RATE SENSOR NEEDED REPLACING. I HEAR A RECALL IS IN THE WORKS FOR THIS. IF AO I WANT A REFUND PLEASE. IT WAS VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS.

I GOT BACK IN AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE, THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS HAD GONE OFF, SO I STARTED TO ACCELERATE BACK INTO TRAFFIC...AND THE SEQUOIA WENT CRAZY AGAIN, REAR END SHAKING, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS GOING OFF. IT WAS 8 PM, DARK. I WAS TOO SCARED TO TRY DRIVING AGAIN, SO I CALLED FOR A TOW. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND FOUND THERE WERE MANY. SOME PEOPLE SAY IT IS AN ELECTRONIC CONTROL SENSOR. EACH WHEEL HAS ONE AND MAYBE ONE WENT OUT CAUSING THAT WHEEL TO ROTATE DIFFERENTLY FROM THE OTHERS, JERKING THE CAR AROUND. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS! THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THERE WAS ALSO AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AS THE STEERING WHEEL VEERED TO THE RIGHT. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO SLOW DOWN UNTIL THE VEHICLE'S SKID CONTROL SYSTEM DISENGAGED WITHOUT BEING PROMPTED. THE FAILURE RECURRED NUMEROUS TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200,000.

WHILE TRAVELING 74-75MPH IN MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA ON A DRY HIGHWAY PASSING A SLOWER SEMI-TRUCK ON A STRAIGHTAWAY, THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOUD GRINDING NOISE, THE VSC AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS FLASHED FOLLOWED BY A SERIES OF HIGH-PITCHED BEEPS. THE SUV LOST PARTIAL CONTROL, AUTOMATICALLY SLOWING A LITTLE AS IT PULLED SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT, SCARILY CLOSE TO THE BIG RIG. HOWEVER, THE SCARIEST PART WAS THAT DRIVER INPUT CONTROLLED NOTHING FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE DRIVERS MANUAL SAID IT WAS SAFE TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENED 3 OTHER TIMES ON THE REMAINING 700 MILES OF MY TRIP. EACH TIME AFTER AN INCIDENT THE SUV DID FINE AS LONG AS THE "VSC AND TRACTION CONTROL OFF" LIGHTS WERE ON. BUT AFTER THE VEHICLE STOPPED, THEY WOULD RESET AND TURN OFF. THE PROBLEM WOULD OCCUR AGAIN AND THE LIGHTS WOULD TURN BACK ON. TOYOTA CLAIMED NO RESPONSIBILITY. THEY REPLACED THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER AT A COST TO ME OF $1123.36. I HAVE NOT DRIVEN ENOUGH MILES TO SEE IF THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM. A SIMPLE INTERNET SEARCH SHOWED 23 PAGES OF 2001 SEQUOIA OWNERS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND EVEN A RECALL FOR 2003 MODELS WITH THE SAME SAFETY DEFECT. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE THERE ARE INJURIES OR FATALITIES.

EACH INCIDENT THE SAME THING HAPPENS: THE ACTIVATION OF A BRIEF AUDIBLE WARNING BEEP, THE VSC INDICATOR LIGHT FLASHES ALONG WITH THE SLIPPERY SURFACE LIGHT (TWO SQUIGGLY LINES) AND THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGINS RANDOMLY APPLYING HARD ABS BRAKING TO THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL, ACCOMPANIED WITH A LOUD GRINDING NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE IT COMING FROM THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN CONTROL IS TO REDUCE THE SPEED AND PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS QUICKLY AND SAFELY AS POSSIBLE. THE LIGHTS STAY ON UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS CUT OFF. ONCE THE CAR IS TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS WILL GO OUT. AFTER THE CAR SITS FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES OR MORE OR OVER NIGHT THE LIGHTS WILL NO LONGER BE LGO OUT. I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK DIAGNOSED WITH THE YAW RATE CENSOR CODE BY ONE REPAIR SHOP AND ONE AUTOPARTS STORE. OVER THE PAST YEAR, THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM HAS RECURRED AT LEAST FOUR TIMES WITHOUT WARNING AND THERE IS NOT A PREDICTABLE SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES THAT SEEMS TO CAUSE AN OCCURRENCE. THIS WAS THE FIRST INCIDENT: AS I WAS DRIVING THEN SUDDENLY THE TRUCK STARTED TO BEEP AND MOVES BACK AND FORTH AND MADE A BRAKING SOUND. AND I WENT INTO THE SIDE AND HIT A SMALL POST AND THE SEAT BELT TIGHTEN. NOW MY BACK HAS BEEN HURTING ME SINCE. AND SOME LIGHTS WERE ON. THE VSC TRAC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS WERE ON. I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING THROUGH A SHOPPING MALL PARKING LOT AT 5 MPH. OUR VEHICLE SHUDDERED AND SWERVED TO THE RIGHT WHILE A BUZZER WENT OFF & THEN THE VSC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE NEXT TWO INCIDENTS OCCURRED OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY BETWEEN 20-25 MPH. ON BOTH OCCASIONS OUR VEHICLE LOST CONTROL AND VEERED TO THE RIGHT BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS LIFE SAFETY DEFECT THAT HAS BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED BY TOYOTA FOR THE 2003 SEQUOIA'S AND BY THE VAST AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS SHOULD EXTEND TO EARLIER MODELS AS WELL. WIFE WAS PULLING OFF FROM A STOPLIGHT WHEN THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM LIGHT (SKIDDING CAR ICON) AND WARNING BUZZER CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A LOUD GRINDING SOUND, VIBRATING, AND PULLING TO THE RIGHT. SHE PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER, TURNED IT OFF, AND CALLED ME TO COME SWAP VEHICLES WITH HER. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR, OF COURSE, THE SYMPTOMS HAD GONE AWAY. SEVERAL DAYS LATER ON A FAMILY TRIP, I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE AT 65-70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE DID THE SAME THING SHE HAD DESCRIBED. WE PULLED OVER, THE NOISE STOPPED, AND THEN THE VSC/TRAC AND TRAC OFF CAME ON. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FIX. RECENTLY, MY 01 SEQUOIA HAS BEEN MAKING A LOUD METAL-LIKE GRINDING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE CAR. SOUNDED LIKE IT CAME FROM THE ENGINE OR THE TIRES. THIS CAUSED THE CAR TO BECOME UNSTABLE ON THE ROAD AND IT WAS SWERVING, THE VSC TRAC LIGHT AND VSC OFF LIGHT FLASHED AND BEEPED RAPIDLY, AND WORST THING OF ALL WAS THAT THE BRAKES DID NOT WORK EITHER. THE MORE I PUT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES, THE MORE THE METAL GRINDING NOISE WAS INTENSIFIED. FELT LIKE THE ENGINE WAS GOING TO BE DROPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD OR THE TIRES WERE SCRAPED TO THE BONE. PROBLEM FIRST HAPPENED IN APRIL, BUT THOUGHT IT WAS NOTHING BECAUSE AS FAST AS IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE, IT QUICKLY WENT AWAY ALSO. HOWEVER, 2 WEEKS AGO, MY HUSBAND AND MY SON WERE IN MY CAR AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME IT LASTED LONGER AND MY HUSBAND HAD TO TRY HIS BEST TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT WAS SWERVING AND SHAKING SO BAD, AND THE LOUD GRINDING NOISE WAS BACK. TODAY, 5/16/12, AS I'M DRIVING AT 50MPH IT HAPPENED AGAIN.THANKFULLY, THERE WERE NO CARS BEHIND ME, AND JUST A TRUCK A LITTLE WAYS AHEAD OF ME. BECAUSE I WAS DRIVING AT A SPEED OF 55MPH, IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP. I PUT PRESSURE ON MY BRAKES TO NO AVAIL BECAUSE THE MORE I TRIED TO PUSH THE BRAKES, THE LOUDER THE NOISE WAS AND THE MORE THE CAR WAS SHAKING. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST TERRIFYING EVENTS IN MY LIFE BECAUSE I SAW THAT I WAS APPROACHING THE BACK OF THE TRUCK FAST AND I COULDN'T STOP, I TRIED TO PULL TO THE SIDE BUT THERE WERE NO ROOM BECAUSE THE SIDES WERE JUST GUARD RAILS. CODE AND LIGHTS STILL, CODE WILL NOT CLEAR WITH TOYOTA INTELLIGENT 2 SCANNER. MONITORING STEERING SENSOR WITH SCANNER SHOW BOTH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBERS WITH ZERO AT WHEELS STRAIGHT. TO MEMORY, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS BEING PRESSED AS NORMAL. WHEN THE ABOVE DASHBOARD LIGHTS ILLUMINATED A NEGATIVE SENSATION COULD BE FELT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL, BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT VEER OFF COURSE. NEXT, THE EMERGENCY FLASHER HAZARD LIGHT WAS TURNED ON, THE A/C & RADIO WERE TURNED OFF AND THE FOUR MAIN WINDOWS WERE LOWERED TO THEIR FULL DOWN POSITIONS BY THE DRIVER AND THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO A SIDE STREET APPROXIMATELY 1/8 MILE AHEAD, STOPPED AND PARKED. THE DRIVER KEPT THE VEHICLE RUNNING. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN INSPECTED BY THE DRIVER FOR SIGNS OF OBVIOUS MECHANICAL FAILURE. THE BRAKE, DRIVELINE AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS DID NOT SHOW ANY OBVIOUS SIGNS OF FAILURE. THE OWNER'S MANUAL WAS CHECKED AND IT DID NOT INDICATE THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE DRIVEN IN THE CURRENT STATE. THE VEHICLE'S A/C SYSTEM WAS SWITCHED BACK ON (THE RADIO WAS LEFT OFF) AND THE VEHICLE WAS THEN DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES, PARKED AND TURNED OFF. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS OF THE VEHICLE BEING PARKED & NOT RUNNING THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. THE PREVIOUS DASHBOARD LIGHTS AT FIRST DID NOT ILLUMINATE. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 1/4 MILE OF DRIVING THE "VSC TRAC" & "VSC OFF" LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AGAIN UPON DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES, PARKED AND TURNED OFF. VSC LIGHT WAS COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY. VEHICLE(SEQUOIA) WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY SO THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE SKID CONTROL ECU. THE VSC LIGHT STARTED COMING BACK ON INTERMITTENTLY APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR LATER. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY TOYOTA SAID IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $2400 TO FIX. SINCE THE LIGHTS ONLY CAME ON INTERMITTENTLY WITHOUT ANY OTHER PROBLEMS AND I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO SPARE I DIDN'T GET THE REPAIRS DONE. WHILE HAVING MY ROTORS TURNED AT THE DEALERSHIP THE MECHANIC SAID THEY NOTICED THE VSC LIGHT WAS ON. THEY SAID THEY WORKED ON MY VEHICLE FOR 3 HRS(AT NO CHARGE-JUST DOING ME A FAVOR)) TO TRY AND REMEDY THE VSC LIGHT PROBLEM. WHEN I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOT 2 MILES DOWN THE ROAD THE WARNING LIGHTS AND ABS LIGHTS WERE COMING ON, I STARTED HEARING WARNING BEEPS, THE CAR STARTED VIBRATING VIOLENTLY AND PULLED TO THE RIGHT. SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME! I PULLED OVER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. OF COURSE THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS SKID CONTROL ECU AND WOULD COST $2400 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. BRAKES INTERMITTENTLY APPLY ON THERE OWN, PULLING THE CAR LEFT OR RIGHT. I AM SUPPOSED TO HAVE THE OPTION OF DISABLING THE VSC ON THIS VEHICLE BUT THAT FUNCTION DOES NOT WORK. IT WILL DISABLE ITSELF AFTER AN EPISODE, LATER IT WILL SELF ENABLE AND IT STARTS OVER AGAIN. I'VE HAD IT IN TO TOYOTA SERVICE TO FIX THIS ISSUE AND WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A NEW CPU, BUT THAT WOULD NOT NECESSARILY FIX THE PROBLEM. I'VE SEEN OTHER SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MANY SEQUOIA OWNER FORUMS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR SEQUOIA OWNERS. THE DEALER HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 45 MPH WHEN THE ABS CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO DECELERATE. THE TRAC AND VSC WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED CONSTANTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE SKID COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM ENGAGED WHICH CAUSED THE BRAKES WITHOUT ANY WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE ECM MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED TO BE RESET WHICH FAILED TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THE INCORRECT BRAKE FLUID WAS USED WHICH CAUSED THE BRAKE GASKET LINING TO MALFUNCTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 162,000.

MY CAR AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED IT'S BRAKES AND VEERED SHARPLY TO THE RIGHT. THE VSC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS CAME ON. THIS EVENT REPEATED ITSELF SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE I COULD GET HOME. IT ALMOST FORCED ME OFF THE ROAD. IF I HAD BEEN IN THE LEFT LANE, I WOULD HAVE HIT ANY CAR IN THE RIGHT LANE OR IF I HAD BEEN GOING FASTER AT THE TIME, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN ACCIDENT. THE CARS BEHIND ME HAD TO SLAM ON BRAKES TO AVOID ME. I CHECKED ONLINE AND THERE ARE MANY OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA IN MULTIPLE YEARS. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE EARLY 2003 MODELS. TOYOTA SERVICE SAYS IT'S A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE YAW SENSOR AND AN $800 REPAIR.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 119,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

THIS PROBLEM HAPPENED BACK IN THE SPRING OF 2003 AND THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER THE NEW VEHICLE'S 3 YEAR WARRANTY. I TOLD THE DEALER REGARDING THIS PROBLEM DURING MY ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, THEY SAID THEY DID NOT FIND THE PROBLEM AND THERE WAS NO CODE RECORDED IN THE COMPUTER. THEY MAKE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS DRIVING AGGRESSIVE AND CAUSE THE PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM WAS ON AND OFF FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS TILL LAST MONTH (JULY, 2009) WHEN MY SON WAS DRIVING IN LA FREEWAY. HE WAS FACING THE LOST OF ENGINE POWER AND UNABLE TO SPEED UP WHEN THE VSC AND TRACTION LIGHTS COMES ON. HE HAS TO PULL OFF THE FREEWAY AND RESTART THE ENGINE. MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA IS EXPERIENCING FALSE SKID INDICATIONS RESULTING IN DANGEROUS APPLICATIONS OF THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BRAKE. THE INDICATIONS ARE ILLUMINATION OF THE SKID SYMBOL, RAPID ANTISKID SERVO ACTION, RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BRAKE APPLICATION WHICH LAST FROM ONE SECOND TO AS MUCH AS 30 SECONDS. ONCE THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE APPLICATION STOPS, THE SKID SYMBOL IS NO LONGER ILLUMINATED AND THE TRAC OFF AND VSC TRAC LIGHTS ILLUMINATE. THIS OCCURS IN ALL DRIVING CONDITIONS AT LOW OR HIGH SPEED, SMOOTH ROAD SURFACES, AND WHETHER GOING STRAIGHT OR TURNING. I HAVE HAD THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT CONNECT THEIR COMPUTER SEVERAL TIMES TO DETERMINE A CAUSE AND THEY CAN NOT DEFINITIVELY TELL WHAT HAS FAILED. SOMETIMES THEY TELL ME IT COULD BE THE YAW SENSOR OR THE SKID CONTROL ECM, BUT THESE ARE VERY EXPENSIVE PARTS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR ABOUT A YEAR. INITIALLY, THE FIRST SIGN OF A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH AND THE THROTTLE WENT TO IDLE AND THE TRAC OFF, VSC TRAC, AND ENGINE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. TOYOTA SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE CABLE AND THROTTLE SENSOR AND I PAID THEM TO REPLACE BOTH PARTS. SHORTLY AFTER THIS, THE FALSE SKID FAILURES BEGAN. THE VSC LIGHT CAME ON AFTER MY 2001 SEQUOIA HIT A POT-HOLE. THIS WAS BACK IN 2004 AND THE LIGHT REMAINS ON. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A SENSOR. THE VEHICLE IS LONG OUT OF WARRANTY AND I CAN'T AFFORD ANY EXPENSES RIGHT NOW. THAT'S JUST ONE OF A FEW MAJOR COMPONENTS TO GO. IN 2003 THE TORQUE CONVERTER WENT AND THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED. I HAD 88,000 MILES ON IT AND IT WAS BEYOND THE 60,000 DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY. HOWEVER, TOYOTA DID PAY FOR HALF OF THE $4000 BILL WITH THE DEALERSHIP PICKING UP A 1/4 OF THE BILL. I PAID THE REST. WAS PAYING HALF AN ADMISSION BY TOYOTA THAT THEY PROVIDED A FAULTY TRANSMISSION. I DO KNOW THAT THE DEALERSHIP REMOVED THE OLD TRANSMISSION AND SHIPPED IT OFF TO TOYOTA AND I NEVER HEARD ANOTHER WORD ABOUT IT. THE BRAKES ON THESE BIG VEHICLES HAVE BEEN A SORE SPOT WITH ME. I'VE HAD TO CHANGE BRAKES AND ROTORS NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE YEARS. AND LAST ON MY LIST OF COMPLAINTS IS THE TAILGATE. IT HAS RUSTED OUT PREMATURELY AND IT IS MORE THAN A $1,000 TO REPLACE. I USE BUNGIES TO KEEP IT CLOSED UP AND I HAD TO PROP THE WINDOW UP SINCE THE TRACKING SYSTEM IN THE TAILGATE RUSTED OUT AND FELL APART. *TR

VEHICLE SKID CONTROL LIGHT CAME ON AND WOULD GO ON AND OFF. IT STARTED AROUND 30,000 MILES AND WOULD LIGHT UP AFTER GOING OVER A SMALL BUMP OR DURING A TIGHT TURN. AT 67,000 MILES IT WENT OFF AT 60 MPH DURING AN ON RAMP ACCELERATION RESULTING IN A VIOLENT SHANK OF THE VEHICLE AND DANGEROUS STOP. A CRASH WAS AVOIDED. TOWED TO DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID BRAKE BOOSTER, YAW SENSOR, AND CPU ERROR. ALL THREE REPLACED OVER A 18 MONTH PERIOD STARTING WITH YAW SENSOR. TOTAL RESULTING IN $3000 OF REPAIRS. I HAVE OLD CPU AND TOYOTA HAS BEEN CONTACTED 6 TIMES AND THEY REFUSE TO ASSIST IN REPAIR COSTS. I FEEL THIS WAS A FAULTY CPU UNIT INSTALLED. *TR

ABOUT 1YR AGO VSC TRAC, TRAC OFF, ABS, & BRAKE LIGHTS ALL COME ON AND STAY ON. MY SYSTEM FOR THESE BRAKING FEATURES NO LONGER WORK. I FOUND OUT FROM RESEARCH THIS IS VERY COMMON ON THE 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT I OWN AND WAS TOLD TO FILE A COMPLAINT TO HELP GET IT RECALLED BY TOYOTA. THE REPAIR IS 2 SEPARATE COMPUTERS THAT CAN BE AS MUCH AS 2200 DOLLARS TO REPLACE. *TR

2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA- 48K MILES..VEHICLES TRACTION CONTROL AND VSC LIGHTS COME ON SHORTLY AFTER DRIVING THE CAR. JUST BEFORE THE LIGHTS COME ON, THE CAR SHAKES AND MAKES A GRINDING NOISE, PULLS TO THE RIGHT, AND LOSES POWER. THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME YOU DRIVE THE CAR. ANYWHERE FROM 1MIN TO 15MIN FROM THE START OF DRIVING. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS ONCE THE VEHICLE IS UP TO SPEED, WE HAVE ALMOST GOTTEN IN TO AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE CAR PULLED SO VIOLENTLY AND DIDN'T HAVE POWER. THE CAR WILL SHAKE AND PULL AND THE ONLY WAY WE'VE GOTTEN IT TO STOP IS BY STEPPING ON THE BRAKE AND REDUCING SPEED (LESS THAN 30 MPH). AFTER WE REDUCE THE SPEED, THE TRAC AND VSC LIGHTS COME ON AND THE CAR IS DRIVABLE UNTIL YOU CYCLE THE IGNITION. IT'S PRETTY SCARY. MY FATHER-IN-LAW TOOK THE CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEIR DIAGNOSIS IS SKID CONTROL ECU FAULTY, MUST REPLACE. DTC CODES C1363 AND C1234. THE COST THEY QUOTED HIM WAS $2415.99 + $200 LABOR. WE HAVEN'T DECIDED TO PURCHASE THE NEW ECU BECAUSE WE FEEL ITS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER A WARRANTY OR SHOULD BE A TSB. I'VE SINCE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT OTHER SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND TOYOTA'S RESPONSE IS TO JUST REPLACE THE ECU. SOME OF THEM EVEN GOT INTO ACCIDENTS DUE TO THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND SHAKING. *TR

BRAKE, ABS, SKID CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS ON , DEALER SERVICE CHECKED AND RECOMMENDED REPLACING BATTERY WHICH WAS DONE BY THEM. FOLLOWING DAY WARNING LIGHTS STILL ON INTERMITTENTLY , RETURNED TO DEALER FOR SERVICE BUT THE WARNING LIGHTS WOULD NOT COME ON WHILE THE DEALER HAD IT. WAS ADVISED IT WAS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, JUST MALFUNCTIONING WARNING LIGHTS. NOW( OCTOBER 2007) THE LIGHTS ARE ALWAYS ON AND WHEN RETURNED TO DEALER FOR SERVICE AGAIN WAS TOLD THIS TIME IT WAS THE SKID CONTROL ECU, AND RECOMMEND REPLACING SKID CONTROL ECU.
