I own a 2001 Toyota Sequoia SR5, which I purchased new in Colorado and moved to Virginia in 2004. I received a Toyota Limited Service Campaign Program notice in 2013 about excessive corrosion on the frame. Alexandria Toyota inspected the vehicle and applied a Corrosion-Resistant Compound to the frame. They also replaced the spare tire carrier assembly due to rusting. Over the years, I've had mechanics mention the rust on the frame but Toyota never issued a recall on the 2001 Sequoia. In November 2024, the following dashboard lights remained on while driving: Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) OFF, VSC TRAC and Brake Lights. I took it to Steven’s Auto Clinic in Alexandria. They found low brake fluid levels were causing the brake system failure. The brake pipes are leaking due to heavy rust. In addition, rust was destroying the under carriage. The brake system and frame would require extensive maintenance. They warned me NOT to drive the car. They refilled the brake fluid to allow me to take the car home. Reading the Complaints under Structure on the NHTSA website, dozens of customers over the years mention serious rusting on the frame of their 2001 Sequoias. I believe Toyota had a recall to replace the frame on the Tundra but never included the 2001 Sequoia even though it was built on the Tundra frame. I now have a vehicle I can’t drive, due to safety concerns, and I can’t sell, except for parts. The Sequoia should have been included in the Tundra recall. Toyota needs to be held accountable. I can provide any paperwork for my 2001 Sequoia including the Limited Service Campaign Program notice and the repair order from Stephen’s Auto Clinic if necessary. I can also provide the vehicle for inspection.

The contact stated that the vehicle was at the dealer for a diagnostic test; however, the dealer declined to perform the diagnostic test, stating that the sub frame was unstable, and an unknown recall campaign had expired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact stated the dealer informed him there was a recall for the sub frame, however, the recall had expired. The failure mileage was unknown.
Rear axle is rusted to the point where differential fluid is leaking out of the body. There is extreme rust in general which has led to the failure of multiple components such as the oil pressure sending unit. Check engine light is on. This hasn't been verified by a shop or agency, only by me. These issues were discovered shortly after purchase this year.
Frame Replacement needed: I took my 2001 Toyota Sequoia (45,515 miles; always garaged) in for an Emissions & Safety Inspection. I was notified the excessive rust on the frame has cause damage to the lines for the brakes/bubbling on the lines, fuel line, power steering fluid lines and, eventually, other undercar items may soon fail. It is recommended that due to the excessive rusting/premature frame rotting, the SUV should be decommissioned and off the road. Toyota dealership actually suggested that it might be necessary for me to sign a waiver in order to take the vehicle out of the dealership. The waiver was to hold Toyota harmless should something result as a result of the defect. I was shocked at the request/I declined. Stated the severe rusting is from the front to the rear of the frame. Research shows the Toyota Corporation is fully aware of the excessive rusting on the Toyota Sequoia SUVs however no remedy has been in place to resolve the issue for current owners. I am advised to replace the fuel lines (approximately $1700 for parts and labor), however, upon replacement the excessive rusting to the frame may damage the other lines in the vehicle and the frame will need to be replaced as well (about $10,000). The 2nd technician stated he has done work on 20+ year old SUVs a lot, none with anywhere near this type of premature rusted frame. Stated he couldn't believe how bad it is. Said it flakes apart when you touch it anywhere. He stressed that I should not have my octogenarian mom, and 1st grader in the vehicle. This is our family vehicle. The 2001 Sequoia SUV was built on a tundra frame which had a structural recall (NHTSA action number: pe09049) for frames built in 2000 and 2001. The Sequoia was left out of this recall; a 2012 Spray Option was offered for the frame (I was told by "Israel" today / Brand Ambassador Department). I never received the notification. No dupport from Toyota. The frame, fuel lines need replacement. Pls help!

The contact stated that she had received a manufacturer recall notification and the vehicle was taken to the local dealer who sprayed the undercarriage with a rust coating inhibitor to prevent the undercarriage from rusting however, the failure occurred. The contact took the vehicle to another local dealer Millennium Toyota (257 N. Franklin St, Hempstead, NY 11550, (516) 874-2581) who inspected the vehicle and stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.

MY TRUCK WOULD BE PERFECT ASIDE FROM THE MAJOR CORROSION LOCATED ON THE ENTIRE FRAME. I'M ON BORROWED TIME WITH MY VEHICLE. TOYOTA SHOULD REPLACE THE FRAME BEFORE THE BOTTOM DROPS OUT. THE CAUSE OF THIS WOULD PROBABLY BE CHEAP PARTS FROM THE FACTORY.

VERY BAD RESTY FRAME AND KEEP FIXING SHOCKS BECAUSE THE FRAME IS BAD ON MY TOYOTA SEQUOIA 2001 CAUSE PROBLEM WITH BRAKES AND SHOCKS

TOYOTA RUST ISSUE ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA R5. MY VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY USED TO TRANSPORT CHILDREN TO AND FROM PRACTICES AND GAMES TWICE A WEEK. THIS PAST SUMMER, I STARTED DRIVING IT DAILY. I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE BECAUSE I KEPT HEARING A KNOCKING AND MY ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. AFTER TAKING IT TO THE MECHANIC, WE DISCOVERED IT WAS AN O2 SENSOR CAUSING THE ENGINE LIGHT ON, BUT ALSO NOTICED EXTREME RUST ON THE ENTIRE FRAME. THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE AND RECOMMENDED THE ENTIRE FRAME BE REPLACED AS THAT KNOCKING WOULD CAUSE THE FRONT HALF OF THE VEHICLE TO SEPARATE FROM THE BACK HALF AND CAUSE A SERIOUS ISSUE. AFTER TALKING TO TOYOTA BODY SHOP, SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND A MECHANIC, I LEARNED OF A CAMPAIGN THAT TOYOTA HAD ISSUED. TOYOTA ISSUED THE CAMPAIGN DUE TO SEVERE RUST OF ITS TOYOTA TUNDRA BUT FAILED TO OFFER THE SAME COVERAGE FOR TOYOTA SEQUOIA ISSUED FOR 2001. THE CAMPAIGN THAT WAS ISSUED WAS FOR 2005-2008 SEQUOIA, HOWEVER MY TOYOTA WAS MADE IN 2001. CURRENTLY, MY VEHICLE WHICH TRANSPORTS MY FAMILY, INCLUDING YOUNG CHILDREN HAS TO SIT UNTIL I CAN FIND $15,000-$17,500 TO HAVE IT FIXED BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. AT THIS POINT, I CAN NOT AFFORD THIS, ESPECIALLY FOR A VEHICLE I PURCHASED USED LAST YEAR. MY MECHANIC AND TOYOTA HAS DEEMED THIS VEHICLE UNSAFE. I'M REQUESTING TO HAVE TOYOTA REPLACE AND FIX THE ENTIRE FRAME OR BUY THE VEHICLE BACK FROM ME SO THAT I CAN PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE THAT'S SAFE, RELIABLE AND SPECIOUS FOR MY FAMILY. PURCHASED VEHICLE IN 2004. COMPLIED WITH A TOYOTA INSPECTION FOR POSSIBLE RUST ON FRAME IN 2012 AND HAD VEHICLE SPRAYED WITH UNDERCOATING IN 2013 (PER TOYOTA INSTRUCTIONS). TOYOTA KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM. BY 2015 FRAME WAS STILL RUSTING AND BY 2018 RUST IS SO BAD THAT CAR WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION AND BEING TOLD FRAME IS "CONPLETELY RUSTED OUT" AND "NOT SAFE TO DRIVE" BY MECHANICS. NOW SCARED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND WORRIED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND FAMILY AS FRAME MAY COLLAPSE OR COMPONENTS COME OFF AT ANY MOMENT. TOYOTA REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECT IN SEQUOIA AND TACOMA VEHICLES WITH THIS PROBLEM. PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD. SOMEONE IS GOING TO DIE AS A RESULT WHEN A MASSIVE FRAME FAILURE HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING. PLEASE ASSIST WITH PRESSURE ON TOYOTA TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

OUR 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAD A LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN RECALL IN 2013-2014 FOR SEVERE RUST PROBLEMS IN THE FRAME. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WE BOUGHT IT FROM. THEY EITHER WOULD REPLACE THE FRAME OR JUST UNDER COAT THE FRAME. THEY TOLD US WE ONLY NEEDED THE UNDERCOATING - NOT TO REPLACE THE FRAME. NOW THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT TOYOTA DID A RECALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN NEWER CARS (I BELIEVE 2005-2008), BUT WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR LATER MODEL CARS, YET IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME RUST ISSUE. TOYOTA WAS ABLE TO UNDERCOAT THE FRAMES, WHICH DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, RATHER THAN REPLACING THE ENTIRE FRAME, WHICH WAS MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE FOR THEM. THIS SAME PROBLEM ALSO OCCURRED WITH THE TOYOTA TACOMA TRUCKS.

ONE OWNER VEHICLE WHEN I PURCHASED JANUARY 2015. WAS SERVICED AT LOCAL TOYOTA AND NEVER SAID ANY ISSUES WITH FRAME BEFORE THE DEADLINE TO HAVE FRAME REPLACED. AFTER I PURCHASED MY MACHANIC NOTICED THE RUSTY FRAME AND TOYOTA SAID AFTER THE DEADLINE TO GET FIXED BUT NO ONE AT TOYOTA SAID IT WAS THAT BAD. IT CONTINUED TO GET WORSE AND MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS VEHICLE ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. IT NOW WON'T PASS INSPECTION B/C THE FRAME IS FALLING APART. THIS IS MY DAILY DRIVER AND SHOULD NOT HAVE PIECES OF THE FRAME CRUMBLING APART. THE REAREND IS ABOUT TO FALL OUT. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE KNOWN WITH A LOT OF THESE VEHICLES!!

FRAME RUSTED OUT AND NEEDED EXTENSIVE REPAIRS. CLASS ACTION SUIT BY TOYOTA ADMITTED PROBLEMS BUT EXCLUDED MY MODEL YEAR. THEY RECALLED MY CAR IN 2012 BUT TREATED FRAME AND DENIED LIABILITY WHEN IT COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT. I HAVE PAID OVER $15,000 IN REPAIRS RELATED TO THIS RUST.

THE DEALER DOING THIS SERVICE WAS TOYOTA OF SCRANTON, IN PA. 3 1/2 YEARS AND 11,000 MILES LATER THIS VEHICLE FAILED THE PA STATE INSPECTION DUE TOP SIGNIFICANT FRAME RUST THROUGH. THERE ARE LARGE HOLES IN THE FRAME AND IN SOME AREAS IN THE REAR VERY LITTLE SOLID METAL REMAINING IN THE FRAME. THE TRAILER HITCH IS ATTACHED TO THE DAMAGED FRAME MAKING AN ACCIDENT WHEN TOWING A TRAILER HIGHLY LIKELY. THE VALUE OF THE VEHICLE HAS GONE FROM $5,000 TO 500 AND I WILL SELL THE VEHICLE FOR SCRAP AND PARTS. THE VEHICLE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, EXCEPT FOR THE ROTTED FRAME. I BELIEVE THERE ARE NOW THOUSANDS OF UNSAFE TOYOTA SEQUOIA, TUNDRA, AND TACOMA VEHICLES OPERATING ON PUBLIC HIGHWAYS. I HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT SIMPLY BECAUSE THE YEARLY STATE INSPECTION SHOWED THE EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE. I OFTEN PULL A 5000# SKI BOAT, AND 2 HORSE TRAILER BEHIND MY SEQUOIA. I WILL NOT RISK THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY, MY HORSES, AND FELLOW MOTORISTS BY DRIVING THIS CAR. BUT, HOW MANY DRIVERS ARE COMPLETELY UNAWARE? HOW MANY BELIEVE THE TOYOTA RECALL WAS EFFECTIVE AND THEIR VEHICLES ARE SAFE? I BELIEVE TOYOTA KNEW THE RUST TREATMENT WAS SIMPLY A WAY TO BUY SOME TIME AND THEY ARE NOW REJECTING CASES "THAT RECALL CAMPAIGN HAS EXPIRED" WAS WHAT [XXX] MY TOYOTA CASE MANAGER'S TOLD ME. SHE DIDN'T OFFER ANY HELP, NO BUYBACK, NO FRAME REPLACEMENT, AND SHE DIDN'T SAY I SHOULD NO LONGER DRIVE THE CAR. TOYOTA KNOWS THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM AND THEY ARE NOW PUTTING THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS AT RISK, AND ALL WHO SHARE THE ROADS WITH THESE UNSAFE VEHICLES. THE ISSUE WILL BE MOST ACUTE IN THE AREAS OF THE US WHERE HIGHWAYS ARE SALTED AND TREATED FOR WINTER DRIVING. DRIVER'S IN UPSTATE NY, NH, MAINE, MI, WI, MN, ETC. ARE AT HIGH RISK AND TOYOTA KNOWS. TOYOTA 2001 SEQUOIA FRAME ROT MAY 20TH, I WAS DRIVING WITH, MY DAUGHTER. THE CAR SHOOK BACK AND FORTH. I DROVE TO OUR MECHANIC. THEY CALLED SAYING THE FRAME WAS HORRIBLY RUSTED AND WAS NOT DRIVABLE. SAID IT WAS A MIRACLE MYSELF AND CHILD WERE NOT IN A DEVASTATING, CATASTROPHIC, DEADLY SITUATION THAT DAY. TOYOTA REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.

THE DEALER STATED THAT IT WAS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT DID NOT RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 171,289.

ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2012 I HAD MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 170,334 MILES SERVICED AT PRIME TOYOTA IN WEST ROXBURY MA DUE TO THE RECALL FOR FRAME CORROSION. IT WAS DETERMINED BY THE MANUFACTURER THAT THE FRAME QUALIFIED FOR RUST PREVENTION COATING WHICH THE DEALERSHIP PERFORMED THE APPLICATION. ON JUNE 12, 2015 I HAD PERFORMED PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE ON SAME VEHICLE NOW WITH 225,345 MILES THE INSPECTION OF FRAME REVEALED SEVERAL SITES OF RUST THROUGHOUT THE FRAME IN SOME CASES THE RUST HAS ROTTED THROUGH. I WAS ADVISED SINCE THE MANUFACTURER PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED PREVENTIVE MEASURES IN 2012 THEY ARE NO LONGER LIABLE AND WOULD NOT REPLACE FRAME AT THEIR COST. HENCE MY COMPLAINT FOR A FAIR RESOLUTION. I AM AWARE THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH SIMILAR VEHICLES BY THE MANUFACTURER. THE ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WAS RECALLED DUE TO CORROSION OF THE FRAME. ALL PARTS SUCH AS THE BACK PLATES FOR THE BRAKES, TIE ROD ENDS, STABILIZER BARS, AND MANY MORE ATTACHED HAD RUST WHEN IT WENT INTO THE SHOP. HOWEVER, TOYOTA DID NOT CARE THAT THE RUST HAD SPREAD. I COULD HAVE WRECKED SEVERAL TIMES DUE TO THE NEGLIGENCE OF TOYOTA. IT HAS BEEN COSTLY AND THE CAR IS NOT THE SAME SINCE THE TRANSFER OF THE FRAME. RUST SPREADS AS CANCER AND IS AS DEADLY WHEN IT IS UNDER YOUR CAR. I WILL HAVE TO SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY. *TR

OUR VEHICLE HAS A SQUEAK AND CRACKING SOUND WHICH IS VERY SCARY WHEN RIDING IN THIS TRUCK.MY HUSBAND WAS INFORMED BY A TOYOTA TECHNICIAN THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE FOR UNDER CARRIAGE RUST/CORROSION WHICH COULD LEAD TO POSSIBLE FRAME DAMAGE. ON 9/22 WE CALLED OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, GAVE THE VIN AND WAS TOLD THEIR IS NO RECALL, & ADVISED TO NOTIFY TOYOTA IF WE WANTED TO PURSUE THIS ISSUE. SO WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED TOYOTA & REC'D A CASE #, AND WAS INFORMED THE ISSUE WAS THE UNDER CARRIAGE WHICH WAS RUSTING AND THE CORROSION WAS CAUSING FRAME DAMAGE DUE TO THE SALT AND OTHER ELEMENTS ON ROADS FOR ICE & SNOW ON 9/23 WE REC'D A CALL INFORMING US THAT THE "SAFETY CAMPAIGN" ENDED ON 7/29, NOTIFICATIONS WENT OUT TO FIRST TIME OWNERS AND OR DMV CURRENT OWNERS. MY HUSBAND & I HAVE BEEN REGISTERED OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE SINCE 9/26/07. WE WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THIS SAFETY CAMPAIGN WHICH POSES A SAFETY HAZARD AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT OUR STATE OF MD IS A STATE IN WHICH THIS VEHICLE IS EFFECTED BY THIS RECALL/CAMPAIGN. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, THE CONTACT HAD DRIVEN OVER A BUMP ON THE ROAD AND SUDDENLY LOSS CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE,WHICH SHIFTED TO THE RIGHT INDEPENDENTLY. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, DECREASED THE SPEED AND COASTED TO THE EMERGENCY LANE. THE CONTACT AND PASSENGERS HAD EXITED THE VEHICLE TO PERFORM A BRIEF INSPECTION AND NOTICED THAT THAT STABILIZER BAR FROM THE REAR AXLE WAS CORRODED AND WAS DETACHED. THE ENTIRE SUB FRAME WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE RESIDENCE. THE CONTACT HAD CONTACTED THE DEALER TO EXPLAIN THE FAILURE AND THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR THE SUB FRAME, HOWEVER, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO BECAUSE THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VOLUNTARY RECALL WAS EXPIRED AND NO ONE WAS INJURED AND NO ACTIONS COULD BE TAKEN TO ACCOMODATE HIM. WE BOUGHT BOTH OUR VEHICLES "NEW" FROM OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHO DOES MOST IF NOT ALL OF THE MAINTENANCE ON THEM. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SINCE WE'VE OWNED THE SEQUOIA THAT RUST HAS BECOME AN ISSUE?! WE DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT MANY OWNERS OF THE SEQUOIA ARE REPORTING THIS VERY SAME ISSUE WHICH IS SIMILAR TO A TUNDRA RECALL. THE RECALL WAS FOR FRAME RUST DUE TO THE USE OF INFERIOR METAL WHICH CAUSED RUST FROM THE INSIDE OUT AND BY THE TIME IT BECOMES VISIBLE IT'S TOO LATE. DECEMBER 28, 2011, I BROUGHT MY 2001, TOYOTA SEQUOIA IN TO BE SERVICED FOR REAR BRAKES AND TO GET THE OIL CHANGED. MY CERTIFIED MECHANIC CALLED ME AT HOME AND STRONGLY SUGGESTED THAT I COME IN TO SEE WHAT HE DISCOVERED WHILE MY VEHICLE WAS UP ON THE LIFT. SO I STOPPED IN TO TAKE A LOOK. HE SHOWED ME EXTENSIVE RUST HOLES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FRAME WELDS ON BOTH THE PASSENGER AND DRIVER'S SIDE. HE ALSO POINTED OUT THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL CASE HAS SEVERE RUST DAMAGE. HE STRONGLY URGED ME TO STOP DRIVING THE VEHICLE AND STATED THAT IT IS UNSAFE IN ITS PRESENT CONDITION AND THAT HE HAS NEVER SEEN SUCH EXTENSIVE FRAME RUST DAMAGE ON A VEHICLE THIS WELL TAKEN CARE OF. THE DRIVE TRAIN, OUTER BODY, AND INTERIOR ARE IN MINT CONDITION. I ALSO HAVE ALWAYS MADE IT A POINT TO POWER WASH THE SALT (CALCIUM CHLORIDE) OFF THE UNDER CARRIAGE AFTER DRIVING IN THE NORTHEAST AFTER SNOW OR ICE STORMS, WHEN SALT IS USED ON OUR ROADS. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY GAVE ME THE PHONE NUMBER TO TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS. THE END RESULT WAS, THEY WERE SORRY TO HEAR THAT I HAD A ROTTED OUT FRAME AND SUGGESTED THAT I GET RID OF THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THERE IS CURRENTLY NO RECALL FOR THE SEQUOIAS. ALTHOUGH, AFTER GOING ONLINE AT THE TOYOTA FORUM I FOUND OUT THAT THEY'RE ARE OVER 300 CONSUMERS WITH THE SAME TYPE OF ISSUE WITH THEIR SEQUOIA FRAMES IN OUR STATE, SO I DO NOT STAND ALONE. I AM FLOORED THAT A COMPANY LIKE TOYOTA, THAT PRIDES ITSELF IN BEING COMMITTED TO SAFETY DOES NOT CARE AND WILL NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP WHEN THEY KNOWINGLY USED CHEAP JAPANESE STEEL TO BUILD THESE FAULTY FRAMES. THEY INDICATED THE TRANSMISSION CROSSMEMBERS HAS A 12-INCH LONG SECTION OF RUST AND THERE ARE SOM SMALL HOLES ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE FRAME IS WEAK AND POTENTIALLY UNSAFE. I UNDERSTAND TOYOTA HAS RECALLED THE 2000-2003 TUNDRAS AND POSSIBLY TACOMAS FOR THIS RUST DAMAGE. THE SEQUOIA IS BUILT UPON THE SAME FRAME PLATFORM AS THE TUNDRA, IT WOULD STAND TO REASON THAT THE SAME PROBLEM AFFECTING TUNDRA PICKUPS WOULD ALSO BE PRESENT IN SEQUOIA SUVS. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED THAT I CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO LODGE A COMPLAINT, WITH A HOPE THAT WITH ENOUGH PEOPLE SPEAKING UP THE SEQUOIA WILL BE RECALLED. THIS FAILURE IS IDENTICAL TO THE FAILURES SEEN IN 2000-2003 TOYOTA TUNDRAS THAT RESULTED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V444000. AS A RESULT OF THIS, TOYOTA RECALLED MODEL YEAR 2000-2003 TUNDRA VEHICLES DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE REAR CROSS MEMBER THAT MAY CAUSE THE SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE. THE 2000-2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA VEHICLES SHARE IDENTICAL FRAME CROSS MEMBER AND SPARE TIRE MOUNTING ARRANGEMENTS IN WHICH EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE REAR CROSS MEMBER AND SPARE TIRE MOUNTING LOCATION CAN CAUSE SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE REAR CARGO LOAD FLOOR WHICH WOULD RESULT IN A ROAD HAZARD. JUST LIKE TACOMAS AND TUNDRAS, THIS VEHICLE HAS SOME OF THE WORST FRAME RUSTING HE HAS SEEN ON A VEHICLE ITS AGE - ESPECIALLY FOR THE LACK OF RUST ELSEWHERE. TOLD ME HE HOPED IT WAS ALL PAID FOR BECAUSE I SHOULD JUNK IT. 10K FOR A NEW FRAME AND THE CAR IS WORTH LESS THAN 9K. I TOLD HIM I STILL OWED 8 THOUSAND ON IT. HE SAID TO CALL TOYOTA. SAID HE WORKS ON 20 YEAR OLD TRUCKS ALL THE TIME WITH NOWHERE NEAR THIS TYPE OF FRAME RUST. KEPT REMARKING HOW HE COULDN'T BELIEVE IT... SAID IT JUST FLAKES APART WHEN YOU TOUCH IT. HE STRESSED THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE MY CHILDREN IN THAT VEHICLE. MY FAMILY VEHICLE. I CALLED TOYOTA COMPLAINTS DEPT. THE REP TOLD ME HE WAS THE SENIOR REP THERE AND THAT HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING ON A SEQUOIA. TOLD ME THAT LOTS OF TRUCKS OF ALL MAKES HAVE FRAME RUST PROBLEMS. HE EXPLAINED THAT HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER DID TO THE VEHICLE - WHETHER HE DID ANY UNDERBODY MAINTENANCE (HE SUGGESTED THAT CAR OWNERS GENERALLY RINSE THE UNDERCARRIAGE AFTER DRIVING IN THE SNOW). HE EVEN SUGGESTED THAT "..FOR ALL WE KNOW, THIS VEHICLE COULD HAVE BEEN IN A FLOOD." DOES A FLOOD CAUSE AGGRESSIVE FRAME RUST BUT LEAVE THE REST OF THE VEHICLE IN MINT SHAPE? IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V444000, TOYOTA RECALLED MODEL YEAR 2000-2003 TUNDRA VEHICLES DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE REAR CROSS MEMBER THAT MAY CAUSE THE SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE. THE 2000-2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA VEHICLES SHARE IDENTICAL FRAME CROSS MEMBER AND SPARE TIRE MOUNTING ARRANGEMENTS IN WHICH EXCESSIVE CORROSION IN THE REAR FRAME CROSS MEMBER AND SPARE TIRE MOUNTING LOCATION CAN CAUSE SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE STOWED UNDER THE REAR CARGO LOAD FLOOR WHICH WOULD RESULT IN A ROAD HAZARD. THIS SEPARATION OF THE SPARE TIRE OR MOUNTING BRACKET COULD CAUSE A CRASH. ALSO, CORROSION OF THE REAR CROSS MEMBER COULD AFFECT THE REAR BRAKE LINES AND THE PROPORTIONING VALVE, RESULTING IN DIMINISHED BRAKING CAPABILITY. I OWN A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND HAVE JUST BEEN ADVISED BY MY LOCAL DEALER THAT THE FRAME IS RUSTED AND THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE 01 SEQUOIA IS BUILT ON THE SAME FRAME AS THE 2001 TUNDRA YET TOYOTA IS WILLING TO DO NOTHING FOR ME. THEY ARE PUTTING TUNDRA OWNERS IN RENTAL CARS AND REIMBURSING THEM, WHY NOT THE SEQUOIA. I TOOK MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA FOR SOME MINOR SERVICE AND THE TOYOTA DEALER TOLD ME THEY CHECKED MY FRAME (REPORTEDLY BECAUSE TOYOTA TOLD THEM TO BE CHECKING TUNDRA AND SEQUOIA FRAMES ON 2000/2001 VEHICLES) AND THEY FOUND RUST THROUGH THE FRAME AND THEY FOUND CORROSION OF THE SPARE TIRE SUPPORT SYSTEM. THEY TOLD ME MY VEHICLE WOULD NO LONGER PASS INSPECTION NEXT TIME I NEEDED IT INSPECTED AND THEY SAID WHILE IT IS NOT AN IMMINENT SAFETY PROBLEM, IT WILL BECOME ONE WITH MORE CORROSION. THEY ARRANGED FOR A FACTORY REP TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND HE CONFIRMED THE DEALERS FINDINGS. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THIS IS AN EMERGING PROBLEM AND TOYOTA IS IN THE PROCESS OF DECIDING WHAT DO ABOUT IT. I WAS GIVEN A CASE # AND WAS TOLD TOYOTA WOULD GET BACK TO ME WITH THEIR PLAN OF ACTION. AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS, I HEARD BACK FORM TOYOTA TODAY TELLING ME THAT WHILE I DO HAVE A FRAME CORROSION PROBLEM , LIKE WAS EXPERIENCED ON THE TACOMA AND TUNDRA, AND WHILE THIS COULD BE A SAFETY ISSUE,TOYOTA HAS NO PLANS TO DO ANYTHING FOR THE SEQUOIA CUSTOMERS. IN OTHER WORDS, I HAVE A PROBLEM BUT IT MY PROBLEM ALONE. TOYOTA'S FAILURE TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM CREATES A SAFETY ISSUE ON THE HIGHWAYS AND WILL RENDER MY VEHICLE USELESS. *TR

WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE HILL AND THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM WENT CRAZY WE SKIDDED OUT AND THEN THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL/SLIP LIGHTS WENT ON. THEY STAYED ON UNTIL WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACE SOME BRAKE SENSORS THAT WERE CORRODED. ON THE WAY HOME IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THE TRACTION CONTROL COMPUTER WAS REPORTING THAT THERE WERE STILL BAD SENSORS, BUT THE SENSORS WERE FINE, SO THEY REPLACED THE ENTIRE TRACTION CONTROL COMPUTER. AFTER A WEEK IN THE SHOP IT FINALLY CAME BACK WORKING. A TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM SHOULD NOT THROW YOUR CAR OUT OF CONTROL AND RUN YOU OFF THE ROAD. THE DEALER SAID THAT THEY HAD NOT SEEN SO MUCH CORROSION UNDER A VEHICLE BEFORE. THEY SAID THAT THE FRAME, EXHAUST, SPARE TIRE, AND BRAKE COMPONENTS AS WELL AS VARIOUS OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS LOOKED TO HAVE WHAT THEY WOULD CALL EXCESSIVE CORROSION. THEY SAID I SHOULD TAKE IT UP WITH WHOM I BOUGHT IT FROM. I THINK THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE TUNDRAS ARE HAVING WITH CORROSION AND SHOULD BE LOOPED INTO THE SAME INVESTIGATION. THE SEQUOIA, I WAS TOLD WHEN I BOUGHT IT, WAS DESIGNED ON THE SAME FRAME, AND DRIVE TRAIN AS THE TUNDRA WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN WHY THE CORROSION IS EFFECTING SIMILAR BRAKING SYSTEMS AND THE SPARE. TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 2001. REAR LIFTGATE GLASS IS LOWERED BY ITSELF WHEN THE VEHICLE IS NOT RUNNING AND LOCKED-UP. HIS PROBLEM WAS REPORTED TO ME BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER. I NOTICED IT ONCE IN NOVEMBER 2003. SUSPECTED THAT THE KEY ON THE REMOTE CONTROL THAT LOWERS THE LIFTGATE WINDOW MAY HAVE ACCIDENTALLY BEEN DEPRESSED, CAUSING THE WINDOW TO LOWER. THEN DECIDED TO HAVE THE MANUAL LOCK THAT DISABLES ALL POWER WINDOW AND LIFTGATE GLASS SWITCHES DEPRESSED TO DISABLE THE POWER WINDOW OPTIONS. VERIFIED THAT WITH THIS KEY DEPRESSED, I COULD NOT LOWER THE LIFYGATE WINDOW NEITHER BY DEPRESSING THE REMOTE CONTROL KEY, NOR BY THE SWITCH ON THE DASHBOARD. THEN IN DECEMBER 2003, ON TWO OCCASIONS, I NOTICED THAT ON TWO OCCASIONS THE LIFTGATE WINDOW HAD LOWERED BY ITSELF. I ENSURDED THAT THE KEY FOR DISABLING THE POWER WINDOW AND LIFTGATE GLASS WAS STILL ENGAGED. CALLED THE DEALER. TOYOTA DEALER INDICATED THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETINE FOR REPLACING THE REMOTE CONTROL UNIT (FOR POWER LOCK AND LOWERING THE LIFTGATE GLASS). I HAVE AGREED TO REPLACING THE REMOTE CONTROL UNITS, BUT STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH TOYOTA'S POSITION THAT CHANGING THE REMOTE CONTROL UNIT WILL ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM HAPPENS WHEN THE KEY TO DISENGAGE THE POWER WINDOW AND REAR LIFTGATE GLASS KEYS IS ENGAGE. I SUSPECT THAT THE PROBLEM IS WITH A CONTROL MODULE ACTIVATING THE LIFTGATE MOTOR RATHER THAN THE REMOTE CONTROL UNIT (BASED ON THE CONDITION UNDER WITH THE LIFTGATE GLASS IN MY CAR HAS BEEN LOWERED ON TWO OCCASIONS IN DEC 2003). *AK

VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO DEALER WHO PROCLAIMS IT'S A DESIGN FLAW. *JG
