While driving my 2001 Sequoia SR5 with only 74,750 miles on freeways at speeds between 55 and 65 mph, the SUV's braking system activates unexpectedly and without cause. The VSC check engine lighting and warning sound illuminate. My SUV veered to the right, the steering wheel vibrated, and it went into a skid when the brakes were abruptly engaged, causing it to skid. My SUV abruptly decelerated as if it had lost power. This situation was hazardous for other vehicles who could not tell if they were applying the brakes due to the absence of visible brake lights to prevent a collision. Fortunately, I responded defensively and avoided collisions with other vehicles and roadside obstacles. This issue is a safety concern; if it occurs at the wrong moment, a tragedy can be avoided. I've seen more than a hundred complaints from other proprietors and a completed NHTSA investigation. Sequoia models from 2001 and subsequent years were recalled for the same issue. Before a life is lost, Toyota must address this issue in all model years.

DRIVING 45MPH ON STRAIGHT ROAD THE VEHICLE VSC ENGAGED PULLING HARD TO THE RIGHT AND DECELERATING QUICKLY. I PULLED OVER, CALLED DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD TO DRIVE IT THE 2 MILES TO DEALERSHIP. WITHIN 100' OF DEALERSHIP I CROSSED INTERSECTION AND CAR SUDDENLY DECELERATED, ENGAGED THE ASSISTANCE AGAIN AND I WAS ALMOST STRUCK BY TRUCK THAT SWERVED AND ALMOST HIT PEDESTRIAN. DEALER SAID IT WAS A YAW STEERING SENSOR. PART WAS UNOBTAINABLE OR POSSIBLE WITHIN 8 WEEKS, AND NO AFTER MARKET PARTS AVAILABLE. MECHANIC RECOMMENDED VEHICLE NOT BE DRIVEN. TOYOTA DECLARED PART OBSOLETE. I RESEARCHED AND FOUND THIS WAS ALREADY AT THE NHTSA ATTENTION BUT THAT THEY CLOSED THE INVESTIGATION. HOW IS THIS ACCEPTABLE?

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE BRAKES WHERE APPLYING THEMSELVES, VEHICLE STARTED SHAKING AND VIBRATING AND SLOWING DOWN AND THE VSC TRAC LIGHTS CAME ON. IT SCARED ME AND I ALMOST HAD A PANIC ATTACK. I PULLED OFF TAYLOR ROAD(CITY STREET) AND TURNED THE CAR OFF AND CHECKED TO SEE IF I HAD A FLAT TIRE. I RESTARTED TO CAR AND THE LIGHTS REMAIN ON AND I TOOK THE CAR HOME. WHILE DRIVING OUR 01 SEQUOIA SR5 WITH ONLY 85,000 MILES ON SIDE STREETS AND HIGHWAYS AT SPEEDS RANGING FROM 5MPH TO 70 MPH, THE SUV'S BRAKING SYSTEM SUDDENLY ENGAGES FOR NO REASON WHILE THE VEH. IS IN MOTION. THE VSC, CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS COME ON ALONG WITH THE ALERTING SOUND. WHEN THE BRAKES ENGAGE, THE VEH. VEERS TO THE RIGHT, THE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATES AND THE VEH. GOES INTO A SKID DUE TO THE BRAKES BEING SUDDENLY ENGAGED. THE VEH. ALSO DECELERATES SUDDENLY AS IF IT HAS LOST POWER. THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR OTHER DRIVERS WHO CAN'T TELL IF YOU ARE BRAKING BECAUSE THERE ARE NO BRAKE LIGHTS TO BE SEEN TO PREVENT A COLLISION. THANKFULLY WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REACT DEFENSIVELY AND AVOID COLLISIONS WITH OTHER VEH.'S. AND ROADSIDE OBJECTS. WE HAVE SEEN SEVERAL SUGGESTIONS AS TO THE FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM LIKE THE YAW RATE SENSOR BEING REPLACED. THE COST OF THE PART IS $568.00 WITHOUT THE INSTALL COST.THIS PROBLEM IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IF IT OCCURS AT THE WRONG TIME, A PREVENTABLE TRAGEDY IS GOING TO OCCUR. I HAVE SEEN WELL OVER 50 COMPLAINTS ON THIS FROM OTHER OWNERS AND A CLOSED NHTSA INVESTIGATION ON THIS EXACT ISSUE. THEY RECALLED THE 2003 SEQUOIA FOR THE SAME ISSUE. MY COMPLAINT STEMS FROM THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL (VSC) ISSUE THAT COMMONLY PLAGUES THE 2001-2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. AS MANY OTHERS HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS OVER THIS VSC ISSUE, MINE IS NO DIFFERENT. MY SEQUOIA, A 4X4 SR5 WITH 160K MILES, WORKS FLAWLESSLY OTHER THAN THE VSC LIGHTS BEING CONSTANTLY ILLUMINATED WHILE DRIVING. THE RESULTS OF THE MALFUNCTION, POSSIBLY FROM THE YAW RATE SENSOR, PRESENT A MOMENTARILY LOSS OF POWER AND RANDOM UNEXPLAINED STEERING EVENTS. THE ONLY WAY TO TEMPORARY CLEAR THE VSC LIGHTS AND THE EFFECTS OF THE MALFUNCTION IS TO COMPLETELY STOP THE VEHICLE, TURN OFF THE IGNITION AND RESTART THE VEHICLE. I FEAR A LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHILE MY WIFE AND KIDS ARE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE TOYOTA ISSUE A FORMAL RECALL OR PAY FOR A NEW YAW RATE SENSOR AND THE CONSUMER PAYS THE LABOR. OTHER THAN THE VSC ISSUE, THE SEQUOIA IS A GREAT VEHICLE OVERALL.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE TRACTION CONTROL AND VSC WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. ALSO, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL SEIZED AND THE VEHICLE STARTED PULLING TO THE RIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE YAW SENSOR FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 188,000.

MY 2001 SEQUOIA WAS IN AN ACCIDENT IN NOVEMBER 2014. IT WAS TOTALED BUT I DECIDED TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AS IT WAS IN GREAT RUNNING CONDITION PRIOR TO ACCIDENT. IT HAD BEEN RUNNING FINE TO AROUND MAY WHEN THE VSC WENT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING AROUND A CURVE MAKING ME ALMOST LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR. THE SAME THING WOULD HAPPEN INTERMITTENTLY WITH A SLIGHT JERK OF THE CAR TO THE LEFT. ON JUNE 25TH THERE WAS A VERY VIOLENT JERK TO THE LEFT WHILE I WAS DRIVING WITH MY BOYS. TOOK IT TO A DEALERSHIP ON 6/27/15 AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE YAW RATE SENSOR. DEALERSHIP RE-CALIBRATED AND IT RAN FINE FOR 2 DAYS. ON 6/29/15 THERE WAS ANOTHER VIOLENT JERK OF THE TRUCK WITH THE VSC LIGHTS COMING ON. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY INSTRUCTED ME TO BRING IT BACK IN. TOOK TRUCK IN ON 6/30/15 AND WAS TOLD I WOULD NEED TO REPAIR THE YAW RATE SENSOR SINCE THE RECALIBRATION DID NOT WORK. I WAS GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF $746.29 FOR REPLACEMENT AND THIS WAS TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE $108 I SPENT ON 6/27/15. TOLD THE REPAIRMAN I WOULD INVESTIGATE FURTHER AND WOULD GET BACK WITH HIM. AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF THE DEALERSHIP GOING LESS THAN 5 MPH, THE TRUCK JERKED VIOLENTLY AGAIN ALMOST SLAMMING ME INTO THE CAR IN THE LEFT LANE. WITH THE HIGH MILEAGE OF THE TRUCK I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND AN ABSORBENT AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR REPAIRS. AS THESE SENSORS HAVE REPORTEDLY HAD REPORTS OF MULTIPLE MALFUNCTIONS IN THE PAST BASED ON MY RESEARCH, I AM NOT EVEN SURE THAT HAVING IT REPLACED WOULD EVEN FIX THE PROBLEM AND IF IT DID, WOULD I BE FACED WITH THE SAME PROBLEM A FEW MONTHS DOWN THE ROAD WHEN THE NEW SENSOR GOES BAD. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT TOYOTA OR THE GOVERNMENT WOULD ALLOW THIS TYPE OF MALFUNCTION WHICH IS LIFE-THREATENING TO GO ON UNRESOLVED. IS IT REALLY GOING TO TAKE THE LOSS OF LIVES AS IN THE CASE OF THE AIRBAGS BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE? HELP!

MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA VIOLENTLY EXPERIENCED A VSC TRAC ERROR WHEN DRIVING NEXT TO A SEMI ON THE FREEWAY. IT ALMOST PULLED MY CAR INTO THE SEMI, AND THEN OFF THE ROAD AS THE WHEEL JERKED, BRAKES AND ENGINE RESPONSE CUT SIGNIFICANTLY. THIS HIGHWAY ISSUE HAPPENED LAST MONTH, AND JUST THIS WEEK, THE PROBLEM HAS BECOME MORE FREQUENT, OCCURRING ON NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS WITH ABSOLUTELY NO TRIGGERS. ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAS SHOWN RANDOM ACTIVATION OF THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ON DRY, SMOOTH PAVEMENT. EACH INCIDENT THE SAME THING HAPPENS: THE ACTIVATION OF A BRIEF AUDIBLE WARNING BEEP, THE VSC INDICATOR LIGHT FLASHES ALONG WITH THE SLIPPERY SURFACE LIGHT (TWO SQUIGGLY LINES) AND THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY BEGINS RANDOMLY APPLYING HARD ABS BRAKING TO THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL, ACCOMPANIED WITH A LOUD GRINDING NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE IT COMING FROM THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THE BRAKES FEEL AS IF THEY ARE PULSATING DURING EACH OF THESE INCIDENTS, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. IT JERKS AND SWERVES FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND SHAKES VIOLENTLY. THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN CONTROL IS TO REDUCE THE SPEED AND PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS QUICKLY AND SAFELY AS POSSIBLE. THE LIGHTS STAY ON UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS CUT OFF. ONCE THE CAR IS TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS WILL GO OUT. AFTER THE CAR SITS FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES OR MORE OR OVER NIGHT THE LIGHTS WILL NO LONGER BE LGO OUT. I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK DIAGNOSED WITH THE YAW RATE CENSOR CODE BY ONE REPAIR SHOP AND ONE AUTOPARTS STORE. OVER THE PAST YEAR, THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM HAS RECURRED AT LEAST FOUR TIMES WITHOUT WARNING AND THERE IS NOT A PREDICTABLE SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES THAT SEEMS TO CAUSE AN OCCURRENCE. MY WIFE NOW REFUSES TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AND I HAVE DRAMATICALLY REDUCED THE USAGE THIS SUV FOR FEAR THAT ANOTHER INCIDENT MAY RESULT IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT!!! AT HIGHWAY SPEED GOING DOWN HILL FULLY LOADED AT NIGHT IN SIERRA WITH TEMPS IN LOW 30S AND NO SNOW IN THE AREA WHERE THE INCIDENT HAPPENED, MY 01 TOY SEQUOIA PULLED TO THE LEFT WITHIN SECONDS BOTH TRAC OFF/VSC TRAC LIGHTS CAME ON. ALL OF MY MUD AND SNOW TIRES HAVE GOOD TREAD. LUCKILY, I HAD BOTH HANDS FIRMLY ON THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN IT HAPPENED. ABLE TO GET HOME SAFELY AT NORMAL HIGHWAY SPEED. THESE LIGHTS ARE STILL ON UNTIL TO DATE (1/17/16) BECAUSE I HAVE NOT TAKEN IN TO TOY DEALERSHIPS; GUESS MANY THIRD PARTIES DON'T WANT TO MESS AROUND WITH THIS ISSUE. DURING THESE INCIDENTS, IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AS IT JERKS FROM SIDE TO SIDE AND SHAKES VIOLENTLY. THE ONLY VIABLE RESPONSE IS TO REDUCE SPEED AND PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. TO RECOVER CONTROL, THE VEHICLE IGNITION MUST BE TURNED OFF AND THE VEHICLE RESTARTED. OVER THE PAST YEAR, THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM HAS RECURRED AT LEAST FOUR TIMES WITHOUT WARNING AND THERE IS NOT PREDICTABLE SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES THAT SEEMS TO INITIATE AN OCCURRENCE. THE NEXT TWO INCIDENTS OCCURRED OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY BETWEEN 20-25 MPH. ON BOTH OCCASIONS OUR VEHICLE LOST CONTROL AND VEERED TO THE RIGHT BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A SERIOUS LIFE SAFETY DEFECT THAT HAS BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED BY TOYOTA FOR THE 2003 SEQUOIA'S AND BY THE VAST AMOUNT OF COMPLAINTS SHOULD EXTEND TO EARLIER MODELS AS WELL. WIFE WAS PULLING OFF FROM A STOPLIGHT WHEN THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM LIGHT (SKIDDING CAR ICON) AND WARNING BUZZER CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STARTED MAKING A LOUD GRINDING SOUND, VIBRATING, AND PULLING TO THE RIGHT. SHE PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER, TURNED IT OFF, AND CALLED ME TO COME SWAP VEHICLES WITH HER. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR, OF COURSE, THE SYMPTOMS HAD GONE AWAY. SEVERAL DAYS LATER ON A FAMILY TRIP, I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE AT 65-70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE DID THE SAME THING SHE HAD DESCRIBED. WE PULLED OVER, THE NOISE STOPPED, AND THEN THE VSC/TRAC AND TRAC OFF CAME ON. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL FIX. TOO MANY VEHICLES HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM, OVER SEVERAL PRODUCTION YEARS (2003'S ACTUALLY HAVE A RECALL FOR A SIMILAR ISSUE). VEHICLE'S TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED WHILE DRIVING ON DRY FLAT PAVEMENT. VSC AND TRAC CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON, VEHICLE PULLED HARD TO THE RIGHT, MADE LOUD GRINDING NOISE, AND WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL STEERING AND BRAKING. CODE AND LIGHTS STILL, CODE WILL NOT CLEAR WITH TOYOTA INTELLIGENT 2 SCANNER. MONITORING STEERING SENSOR WITH SCANNER SHOW BOTH POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE NUMBERS WITH ZERO AT WHEELS STRAIGHT. VEHICLE: TOYOTA SEQUOIA 2001 4WD LTD TEMPERATURE: 87 DEGREES F CONDITIONS: SUNNY & CLEAR - NO RAIN/WATER PRESENT - NO OBVIOUS SLIPPERY CONDITIONS SURFACE: PAVED SURFACE ROAD ACCESSORIES ACTIVE: AIR CONDITIONING WAS ON & RADIO WAS ON WHILE TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH IN A STRAIGHT LINE THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ILLUMINATED (VEHICLE SYMBOL THAT INCLUDES 3 WAVY LINES) AND SOUNDED AN AUDIBLE SIGNAL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY THE "VSC TRAC" & "VSC OFF" LIGHTS ILLUMINATING. TO MEMORY, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS BEING PRESSED AS NORMAL. WHEN THE ABOVE DASHBOARD LIGHTS ILLUMINATED A NEGATIVE SENSATION COULD BE FELT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL, BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT VEER OFF COURSE. NEXT, THE EMERGENCY FLASHER HAZARD LIGHT WAS TURNED ON, THE A/C & RADIO WERE TURNED OFF AND THE FOUR MAIN WINDOWS WERE LOWERED TO THEIR FULL DOWN POSITIONS BY THE DRIVER AND THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO A SIDE STREET APPROXIMATELY 1/8 MILE AHEAD, STOPPED AND PARKED. THE DRIVER KEPT THE VEHICLE RUNNING. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN INSPECTED BY THE DRIVER FOR SIGNS OF OBVIOUS MECHANICAL FAILURE. THE BRAKE, DRIVELINE AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS DID NOT SHOW ANY OBVIOUS SIGNS OF FAILURE. THE OWNER'S MANUAL WAS CHECKED AND IT DID NOT INDICATE THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE DRIVEN IN THE CURRENT STATE. THE VEHICLE'S A/C SYSTEM WAS SWITCHED BACK ON (THE RADIO WAS LEFT OFF) AND THE VEHICLE WAS THEN DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES, PARKED AND TURNED OFF. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS OF THE VEHICLE BEING PARKED & NOT RUNNING THE VEHICLE WAS RESTARTED. THE PREVIOUS DASHBOARD LIGHTS AT FIRST DID NOT ILLUMINATE. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 1/4 MILE OF DRIVING THE "VSC TRAC" & "VSC OFF" LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AGAIN UPON DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES, PARKED AND TURNED OFF. VSC LIGHT WAS COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY. VEHICLE(SEQUOIA) WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY SO THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE SKID CONTROL ECU. THE VSC LIGHT STARTED COMING BACK ON INTERMITTENTLY APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR LATER. SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY TOYOTA SAID IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $2400 TO FIX. SINCE THE LIGHTS ONLY CAME ON INTERMITTENTLY WITHOUT ANY OTHER PROBLEMS AND I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO SPARE I DIDN'T GET THE REPAIRS DONE. WHILE HAVING MY ROTORS TURNED AT THE DEALERSHIP THE MECHANIC SAID THEY NOTICED THE VSC LIGHT WAS ON. THEY SAID THEY WORKED ON MY VEHICLE FOR 3 HRS(AT NO CHARGE-JUST DOING ME A FAVOR)) TO TRY AND REMEDY THE VSC LIGHT PROBLEM. WHEN I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOT 2 MILES DOWN THE ROAD THE WARNING LIGHTS AND ABS LIGHTS WERE COMING ON, I STARTED HEARING WARNING BEEPS, THE CAR STARTED VIBRATING VIOLENTLY AND PULLED TO THE RIGHT. SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME! I PULLED OVER AND HAD THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. OF COURSE THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WAS SKID CONTROL ECU AND WOULD COST $2400 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF THIS CAR AND WOULD FIX IT IF I DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA VSC (VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL) SYSTEM HAS ENGAGED UNNECESSARILY WITHOUT REASON. THE SYSTEM ENGAGES ON DRY ROADS GOING 65-70 MPH. THE FAILURE CONTINUED AFTER THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR A SECOND TIME AND THE YAW RATE SENSOR WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 128,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAD A PROBLEM WHERE THE ABS AND VTRAC LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND THE VEHICLE WOULD VIOLENTLY PULL TO THE RIGHT SIDE AND YOU WOULD LOOSE TRACTION AND CONTROL. THIS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES AND WAS TAKEN TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR REPAIR. THEY RELOADED THE COMPUTER PROGRAM BECAUSE THE COMPUTER WAS NOT LOGGING THE CODES. THE NEXT DAY THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND I TOOK IT THE DEALER RIGHT AWAY AND THEY WERE ABLE TO GET A CODE AND DETERMINE IT WAS A YAWR SENSOR.THE SENSOR WAS REPLACED ON 6-10-10 AND SEEMS TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM AT A COST OF $455.46 PLUS $100 TO REPROGRAM THE COMPUTER. THE VSC LIGHT CAME ON AFTER MY 2001 SEQUOIA HIT A POT-HOLE. THIS WAS BACK IN 2004 AND THE LIGHT REMAINS ON. I WAS TOLD IT WAS A SENSOR. THE VEHICLE IS LONG OUT OF WARRANTY AND I CAN'T AFFORD ANY EXPENSES RIGHT NOW. THAT'S JUST ONE OF A FEW MAJOR COMPONENTS TO GO. IN 2003 THE TORQUE CONVERTER WENT AND THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED. I HAD 88,000 MILES ON IT AND IT WAS BEYOND THE 60,000 DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY. HOWEVER, TOYOTA DID PAY FOR HALF OF THE $4000 BILL WITH THE DEALERSHIP PICKING UP A 1/4 OF THE BILL. I PAID THE REST. WAS PAYING HALF AN ADMISSION BY TOYOTA THAT THEY PROVIDED A FAULTY TRANSMISSION. I DO KNOW THAT THE DEALERSHIP REMOVED THE OLD TRANSMISSION AND SHIPPED IT OFF TO TOYOTA AND I NEVER HEARD ANOTHER WORD ABOUT IT. THE BRAKES ON THESE BIG VEHICLES HAVE BEEN A SORE SPOT WITH ME. 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA- 48K MILES..VEHICLES TRACTION CONTROL AND VSC LIGHTS COME ON SHORTLY AFTER DRIVING THE CAR. JUST BEFORE THE LIGHTS COME ON, THE CAR SHAKES AND MAKES A GRINDING NOISE, PULLS TO THE RIGHT, AND LOSES POWER. THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME YOU DRIVE THE CAR. ANYWHERE FROM 1MIN TO 15MIN FROM THE START OF DRIVING. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS ONCE THE VEHICLE IS UP TO SPEED, WE HAVE ALMOST GOTTEN IN TO AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE THE CAR PULLED SO VIOLENTLY AND DIDN'T HAVE POWER. THE CAR WILL SHAKE AND PULL AND THE ONLY WAY WE'VE GOTTEN IT TO STOP IS BY STEPPING ON THE BRAKE AND REDUCING SPEED (LESS THAN 30 MPH). AFTER WE REDUCE THE SPEED, THE TRAC AND VSC LIGHTS COME ON AND THE CAR IS DRIVABLE UNTIL YOU CYCLE THE IGNITION. IT'S PRETTY SCARY. MY FATHER-IN-LAW TOOK THE CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEIR DIAGNOSIS IS SKID CONTROL ECU FAULTY, MUST REPLACE. DTC CODES C1363 AND C1234. THE COST THEY QUOTED HIM WAS $2415.99 + $200 LABOR. WE HAVEN'T DECIDED TO PURCHASE THE NEW ECU BECAUSE WE FEEL ITS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER A WARRANTY OR SHOULD BE A TSB. I'VE SINCE SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT OTHER SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND TOYOTA'S RESPONSE IS TO JUST REPLACE THE ECU. SOME OF THEM EVEN GOT INTO ACCIDENTS DUE TO THE SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND SHAKING. *TR

ON MY 2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, THE VSC/ABS/SKID LIGHT CAME ON A FEW DAYS. WE TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY INDICATED THAT THE VSC/ABS SKID CONTROL ECU HAS FAILED. WE ARE TOLD THAT WE NEED TO REPLACE THIS AT A COST OF $2,400. I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM, CATCHING FIRE, ETC. AND THIS PROBLEM IS LIFE THREATENING. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS AFTER THE FIRST OCCURRENCE. AS OF JULY 9, 2007, THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 116,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

2001 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHEN I SHIFTED FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE THE ENGINE ROARED TO A FULLY RACING ENGINE AND ACCELERATED FORWARD. HARD BRAKING COULD NOT SLOW THE VEHICLE AND IT HIT THE BACK OF A 2004 HONDA MINI-VAN THAT WAS PARKED, DOING EXTENSIVE DAMAGE BUT CAUSING NO INJURIES. *JB

WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A COMPLETE STOP THERE WAS A HESITATION IN ENGINE. THIS HESITATION ALMOST RESULTED IN SEVERAL VEHICLE CRASHES.
