GRINDING NOISE, BEEPING, WARNING LIGHTS FLASHING, DIFFICULTY STEERING, DIFFICULTY BRAKING, CLUNKING WHEN BRAKING, VSC AND ABS LIGHTS ON. VERY SCARY. I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH. IT ALSO HAPPENED WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING IT. VERY INTERMITTENT. I WAS GOING STRAIGHT, NO TURNING, NO BUMPS IN THE ROAD. SO RANDOM. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE MUCH ON YOUTUBE AND THE INTERNET AND THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SCARY SITUATION. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD AND MUST BE FIXED! I HEARD THEY RECALLED THE 2003'S BUT NOT THE 2002'S BUT THEY HAVE THE SAME PARTS. AS I DRIVE DOWN A HIGHWAY, GRAVEL ROAD, DRIVEWAY, STREET, ANYWHERE, GOING SLOW OR THE SPEED LIMIT, ALL OF A SUDDEN MY VSC LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT ON THE DASH WILL START FLASHING ACCOMPANIED BY AN ALARM IN THE DASH, CAUSING THE CAR TO MOMENTARILY FEEL ALMOST AS IF ITS HYDROPLANING. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT WILL GO BACK TO NORMAL BUT THE LIGHTS WILL STAY ON. SOMETIMES IT DOES IT 2-3 TIMES EACH TIME THE CAR IS TURNED ON. IT HAS ALSO BEEN DOING IT WHEN I COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, THEN GO TO TAKE OFF AGAIN IT WILL FLASH THE LIGHTS AND MAKE A WEIRD GRINDING NOISE FOR ABOUT 5-10 SECS NOT LETTING THE CAR MOVE AT ALL. THEN IT WILL ALL OF A SUDDEN START MOVING AGAIN. I HAVE 7 KIDS THAT RIDE WITH ME DAILY AND I FIND THIS EXTREMELY SCARY. IT'S BEEN HAPPENING FOR 6/01/2020 TO NOW/PRESENT/DAILY/

AFTER 10 SECONDS, BEEPING STOPS, ESC STOPS FLASHING. TRAC OFF AND VSC LIGHT COME ON AND STAY ON. CAR DRIVES FINE NOW WITH LIGHTS ON. MECHANIC SAID NEED NEW BRAKES AND YAW SENSOR OUT OF CALIBRATION PROBABLY DUE TO BRAKES. REPLACED ALL BRAKES AND ROTORS, RE-CALIBRATED YAW SENSOR FOR $1000. SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN 600 MILES LATER. THIS TIME WHEN IT HAPPENED, MY 18 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING. SHE WILL NOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE ANYMORE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. I RESEARCHED AND MANY 2002 SEQUOIAS HAVE THIS PROBLEM, SOMETIMES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 2003 SEQUOIAS, THEY NEED TO COVER THIS YEAR. *TR

AT 247,000 PLUS MILES THE ABS SYSTEM WOULD SUDDENLY ENGAGE GOING AROUND SHARPER CURVES ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65+ MPH. RECENTLY THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGED AT 32 MPH AROUND A SHARPER CURVE ON A MOUNTAIN ROAD. I BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER IN AUGUST 2019. AS OF FEBRUARY 2020 IT IS STILL NOT FIXED, DESPITE SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY. BESIDES BEING NERVE WRACKING, IT IS A POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY IN SNOW AND ICE, THAT SHOULD QUALIFY FOR A RECALL.

WHEN I START THE VEHICLE THE TRAC OFF AND VSC TRAC LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH. AFTER DRIVING A SHORT TIME THE VEHICLE BEEPS AND GOES INTO A SKIP AND BREAKS TO ONE SIDE. IT CORRECTS ITSELF IN A SECOND. SOMETIMES IT BEEPS AND NO SKID. THIS STARTED A YEAR AGO. FREQUENCY WAS A FEW TIMES A YEAR THEN. NOW IT HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. I BELIEVE TOYOTA ADDRESSED THE ISSUE ON 2003'S, BUT NOT 2002'S. MOST OF TIME THE VEHICLE IS ON CITY STREETS WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND IT IS MORE LIKELY TO HAPPEN AFTER DRIVING A FEW MINUTES. IT ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN I AM DRIVING STRAIGHT.

MY VEHICLE JERKS VIOLENTLY, A BUZZER SOUNDS, AND THE VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS ILLUMINATE AND REMAIN ILLUMINATED. IF THOSE LIGHTS ARE ILLUMINATED IT NO LONGER DOES THIS; HOWEVER, IF THE LIGHTS ARE NOT ILLUMINATED IT'S A COIN FLIP WHETHER BEING JERKED TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT WHILE DRIVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE ON THE HIGHWAY. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DOESN'T KNOW WHAT PROBLEM IS. APPARENTLY IT COULD BE A DOZEN DIFFERENT THINGS AND THEY HAVE TO START REPLACING EACH ONE AT A TIME TO SEE IF THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY. TO REPLACE EVERYTHING IS SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS, PROBABLY MORE THAN THE BOOK VALUE OF THE VEHICLE.

I FORGOT TO MENTION IN COMPLAINT 11282925 THAT SOME OF THE DOZEN PARTS NEEDED TO FIX THE VSC PROBLEM HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED BY TOYOTA. SO I COULD PAY THE DEALERSHIP THOUSANDS TO REPLACE SOME OF THE POSSIBLE CULPRITS BUT THE REAL PROBLEM COULD BE THE ITEMS THAT TOYOTA DISCONTINUED. TOYOTA CANNOT ISOLATE WHAT THE EXACT PROBLEM IS AND HAS TO REPLACE POSSIBLE CULPRITS TO SEE IT IT FIXES THE PROBLEM. AFTER ALL OF THIS AND A HUGE REPAIR BILL COULD STILL HAVE THE HIGHWAY SAFETY PROBLEM IF THE FAULTY PART(S) ARE THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED. REPLACING ITEMS ONE AT A TIME AND THEN DRIVING IT ON THE HIGHWAY TO SEE IF IT'S SAFE IS NOT A GOOD STRATEGY. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL AND FIX ALL ITEMS AT THE SAME TIME AND ALSO PRODUCE THE PARTS THEY HAVE DISCONTINUED AS A WAY TO POSSIBLY TRY TO COVER UP THEIR NEGLIGENCE.

THE NEXT DAY I DROVE THE CAR SLOWLY ON A LOCAL STREET AFTER PICKING UP MY SON AFTER SCHOOL, THE BRAKE STARTED SHAKING THE CAR AND VSC OFF AND VSC TRACK LIGHTS ARE ON AGAIN. I DRIVE THE CAR WITH CAUTION EVERYTIME AFTER THAT BUT THE OCCURANCE DOESN'T HAPPEN EVERY TIME NOR BEING RECREATE. IT HAPPENED EVERY FEW THOUSAND MILES UNEXPECTEDLY. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS . I WOULD LIKE TO FIND A FIX BY THE MANUFACTURER AND HAVE THEM PAY FOR IT. IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR MANY SAME CARS .

JUST BOUGHT A USED 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND QUICKLY FOUND THAT I CAN NOT PULL OUT INTO HEAVY TRAFFIC WITHOUT PLENTY OF GAP IN SAID TRAFFIC.I HAD UNHOOKED THE BATTERY TO DO SOME WORK ON IT AND NOW IT WILL HESITATE FOR 1.5 TO 3 SECONDS WHEN YOU EASE FROM A STOP.I HAVE SEEN ON OTHER SITES THAT IT IS CALLED THE HESITATION OF DEATH.I NOTICE ON THE DASH THE (CAR WITH THE SLIPPING) LIGHT COMES ON AND THERE ARE SOME RELAY NOISES UNDER THE DASH.I DON'T SEE THE VSC LIGHT COME ON OR THE ABS LIGHT COME ON.I DID CALL MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO EXPLAIN MY EXPERINCE AND THEY CLAIM TO HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS ISSUE.THEY TOLD ME JUST TO DRIVE IT AND IT SHOULD WITHIN A FEW DAYS IT SHOULD RELEARN ITSELF.I TOLD THEM I JUST DROVE A 650 MILE TRIP WITH IT AND ITS BEEN A WEEK OR TWO SINCE I UNHOOED THE BATTERY WITH NO CHANGE.SHE SIMPLY JUST WISHED ME LUCK AND THAT WAS IT.AS A UPDATE I CHANGED THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS IN WITCH LOWERED THE BRAKE FLUID LEVEL IN THE MASTER CYLNDER WITCH TURNED ON ALL THE VSC WARNING LIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHT AND THE HESITATION WENT AWAY AS LONG AS THE LIGHTS WERE ON.UNFORTUNTALY I TURNED IT OFF AND FILLED THE BRAKE FLUID TO MAX LEVEL AND THE HESITATION CAME RIGHT BACK AND THE VSC WARNING LIGHTS WENT OFF.NOTHING TO INDICATE OR GIVE A DIRECTION TO A REPAIR.I SEE THE REPORTS ABOUT THE 2003 SEQUIOA HAVING A RECALL BUT NOT THE 2002.IF THEY ARE THE SAME PART NUMBERS I THINK FOR ALL SAFTY FACTORS ON BOTH YEARS THEY SHOUD BE HONERING THE 2002 UNDER A SAFTY RECALL.NOT REALLY SURE WHAT TO DO AT THIS POINT.DO I SELL IT,TRADE IT IN, THE DEARSHIP DIDNT OFFER ANY TRUE HELP OR EVEN MENTION THE RECALL ON THE 2003 SEQUIOA. THE FIRST INDICATION THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WAS THE FIRST WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 2019. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A COUNTY ROAD WHEN THE LIGHTS INDICATOR LIGHTS FOR THE TRAC AND VSC STARTED FLASHING AND BEEPING WHEN I DROVE OVER SOME BUMPS. THE LIGHTS WOULD NOT GO OFF EVEN WHEN PRESSING TRAC OFF. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND RESTARTED IT AND THE LIGHTS WERE OFF BUT ONLY FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES INTO MY DRIVE. I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THE AGENT SAID HE DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE SYSTEM AND I WOULD HAVE TO BRING IT BACK FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THAT NIGHT I WAS GETTING READY TO GO OVER A RATHER LARGE BRIDGE WHEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN THE CAR JERKED TWICE TO THE RIGHT WITH THE SECOND EVENT PULLING ME OFF THE ROAD. IT WAS EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING AND TERRIFIED US ALL. THANK GOD IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE BRIDGE OR UNDER OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES. THE VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS CAME ON AT APPROXIMATELY THE SAME TIME AS THEY HAD BEEN OFF. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE AND ESSENTIALLY THEY SAID THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION. THANKFULLY I AM A EXPERIENCED DRIVER BUT IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN ONE OF MY KIDS, I DON'T KNOW IF THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP HAS BEEN OF NO HELP. THE CAR IS SITTING IN MY DRIVE. I IMPLORE YOU TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE THIS FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED.

I DIDN'T REALIZE WHAT THE LIGHTS MEANT BEING ON WHEN I BOUGHT IT UNTIL I WAS ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE 4HRS AWAY AND SUDDENLY THE STEERING STARTED VEERING OFF TO THE OTHER LANE AND SWERVING. I COULD NOT DRIVE PAST 40MPH ON THE INTERSTATE THE REST OF THE WAY AND ALMOST CRASHED INTO OTHER VEHICLES AND OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WHEN YOU SWITCH LANES THE VEHICLE PULLS YOU TOO FAR AND IT IS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE ESPECIALLY WITH KIDS. I HAD TO BREAK THE ABS FUSE TO GET BACK HOME AND EVEN THEN IT STILL VEERS OFF WHEN TRYING TO SWITCH LANES AND I CAN'T GO PAST 60 OR SO. I DON'T SEE HOW THERE ARE THIS MANY COMPLAINTS AND MANY ACCIDENTS AND ALMOST ACCIDENTS TO NOT HAVE EVERYTHING ASSOCIATED WITH THIS MALFUNCTION TO BE CONSIDERED NOT DANGEROUS ENOUGH FOR A RECALL. I'M THANKFUL MY KIDS WERE NOT WITH ME DURING THAT TRIP.

I HAVE HAD MANY COMPLAINTS WITH MY VEHICLE AND RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP MANY TIMES THRU OUT THE YEARS. I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH VSC TRACTION CONTROL STARTING IN 2002 LIGHTS WOULD COME ON AND GO OUT, AIR BAG LIGHT COMES ON WHEN THERE IS HIGH HUMIDITY AND WHEN USING AIR CONDITIONING, MY ALLOY WHEELS HAVE BEEN DISGUSTING SINCE 2004. I HAVE A EXTENSIVE REPAIR HISTORY WITH BILL DUBE DEALERSHIP THEY NEVER ADDRESSED ISSUES AS ONCE LIGHTS ON DASH TURN OFF THERE IS NO HISTORY. IN 2006 MY LIGHTS ON DASH CAME ON I BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA OF PORTSMOUTH NH AS I WAS ALMOST AT 100000. MILES. THEY COULD NOT LOOK AT VEHICLE DUE TO WARRANTY. I DROVE TO BILL DUBE AND THEY REFUSED TO SEE ME THAT DAY OR DOCUMENT THAT LIGHTS WERE ON SO THEY COULD FIX IT. ONCE MY ODOMETER HIT 100000 WARRANTY WAS NULL AND VOID. I WAS EXTREMELY UPSET CALLED MULTIPLE TIMES TO TOYOTA CORPORATION AND APPEARED TO GET SAME JERK WHO REFUSED TO HELP AND GAVE ME THE RUN AROUND. WE HAVE OWNED OUR SEQUIOA FOR 18 1/2 YEARS. I LOVE MY CAR IT HAS APPROX 445000 MILES AND WOULD APPRECIATE ASSISTANCE. MY VSC IS CONSTANTLY ON NOW ALONG WITH THE ABS LIGHT. THE AIR BAG ONLY COMES ON WHEN THERE IS HIGH HUMIDITY AND I AM DRIVING. WHEN WE BOUGHT THE SEQUIOA THE SALESMAN ACTUALLY STATED THE SEQUIOA HAD A HARD DRIVE TO RETAIN LIGHT HISTORY. I ALSO HAVE BEEN CONCERNED WITH MY FRAME WHICH WAS REPLACED IN 2012. I HAVE RETURN TO PORTSMOUTH TOYOTA WHERE WORK WAS DOWN A FEW TIMES. MY VEHICLE APPEARS CROOKED AND NOT ALIGNED THEY THINK I AM CRAZY. IN RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM, IT APPEARS TO BE A DRIVING SAFETY ISSUE IF IT OCCURS AT HIGHER SPEEDS, LUCKILY MINE HAPPENED AT LOW SPEEDS. IF TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND HAS DONE RECALLS FOR THE SKID CONTROL ECU/YAW RATE SENSOR ON THE 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA'S, WHY NOT A RECALL ON THE 2002 SEQUOIAS WHICH SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM? A FEW MONTHS AGO I WAS TRAVELING AT 65 AND THE ALARM CAME ON, THE GRINDING AND DRAGGING NOISE AND MY CAR STARTED SLOWING DOWN AND SWIRVED TO THE RIGHT. I JUST BARELY MISSED A MOTORCYCLIST. LUCKY NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN REAR ENDED. I PURCHASED TOYOTA FOR THEIR SAFETY AND QUALITY REPUTATION. I TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY CAR AND SAFETY OF MY FAMILY IS MY PRIORITY. WHILE DRIVING MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, I ENCOUNTERED TWO SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUES THAT WERE RECALLED AS PART OF A PRIOR NHSTA CAMPAIGN (10V-176). WHILE MY TOYOTA IS MANUFACTURED WITHIN THE SAME WINDOW OF A RECALL, MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. NHSTA HAS OPENED AN ACTIVE INVESTIGATION (PE16006) IN RESPONSE TO OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME ISSUES. ISSUE #1: TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE PROPERLY FROM A STOPPED POSITION. THE CODE BASED ON THE VCS WARNING LIGHT INDICATED AN ISSUE WITH THE CENTER POSITION OF THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR (SAS). THE SENSOR WAS REPLACED AND THE ECU PROGRAMMING WAS UPDATED TO RESOLVE THE SAFETY ISSUE. ISSUE #2: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, THE VEHICLE LOST CONTROL WHILE DRIVING DUE TO AN ISSUE WITH A FAULTY YAW RATE SENSOR. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VSC AND TRACTION WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AS THE VEHICLE PULLED TO THE RIGHT. WHEN THE ISSUE OCCURRED, THE VEHICLE MAKES A GRINDING SOUND AND PULLS VERY HARD TO THE RIGHT. THE VEHICLE LOSES ACCELERATION AND FEELS LIKE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING MECHANISM IS BEING ENGAGED. AFTER EXPERIENCING THE ISSUES WITH THE TOYOTA SENSORS THAT ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT, I HAD THE FAULTY SENSORS REPLACED. I HAVE REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT FROM TOYOTA BUT WAS DENIED. THE REPAIR WAS FOR THE SAFETY ISSUES WHICH ARE UNDER RECALL FOR THE SAME MODEL YEAR (APRIL 2002 ' APRIL 2003), AS MY VEHICLE IS MANUFACTURED IN MAY 2002. THE REPAIRS INCLUDED THE DEFECTIVE STEERING SENSOR AND THE YAW STABILITY SENSOR REQUIRED TO SAFELY DRIVE THE VEHICLE.

I MANAGED TO GET IT HOME, AS I WAS ONLY ABOUT A MILE FROM THERE, WHERE I PARKED IT, AND HAD IT TOWED TO A SHOP. THE MECHANIC WAS ABLE TO PULL A CODE...THE YAW SENSOR. BUT, THE MECHANIC SAID THAT HE COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT, AFTER TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT, AT ANY SPEED, AND WITH NO WARNING OR VISIBLE REASON FOR DOING SO. THIS POSES A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE, ESPECIALLY WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAYS AT HIGHER SPEEDS. THIS ISSUE COULD CAUSE A DEADLY DISASTER AT HIGH SPEEDS, AND WITH MANY OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. NO MATTER WHAT SPEED, THE VSC ALARM GOES OFF, THE CAR BRAKES VIOLENTLY AND PULLS TO THE RIGHT, AND MAKES A HORRIBLE GRINDING SOUND. THEN THE VSC LIGHT STAYS ON UNTIL THE CAR IS TURNED OFF AND RESET. UNDER WARRANTY, I WENT TO GILROYTOYOTA IN 2014 TO GET THIS FIXED. THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE YAW RATE SENSOR, HOWEVER THAT ISN'T COVERED IN THE WARRANTY. IT WOULD COST AROUND $800-$1000 TO REPLACE. THEY DID REPLACE THE BRAKE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY, AND THAT WORKED FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS UNTIL THE VSC LIGHT CAME BACK ON AND THE CAR PULLED AND BRAKED AGAIN. VERY VERY DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENS, AND THE ALARM GOES OFF AND THE CAR BRAKES AND PULLS, COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENT. IDENTICAL PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED BY MANY OTHERS. VSC-TRAC AND TRAC-OFF LIGHTS RANDOMLY ILLUMINATED ON DRY, LEVEL PAVEMENT WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED, CAUSING A LOUD GRINDING NOISE (MUCH LOUDER THAN NORMAL APPLICATION OF ANTI-LOCK BRAKES), AND CAR PULLED AND WOULD NOT STOP NO MATTER HOW HARD THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PRESSED. FIRST COUPLE TIMES, BRAKES WERE APPLIED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE IN TRAFFIC, SO THE FAILURE TO FULLY STOP WASN'T NOTICED. THEN, I EXPERIENCED AN INCIDENT WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED COMING TO A STOP SIGN. EVEN WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL FULLY DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED INTO THE INTERSECTION. HAD A CAR BEEN COMING IN CROSS TRAFFIC, THIS WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. AFTER THIS INCIDENT, WE TOOK THE CAR FOR SERVICE, AND THE YAW SENSOR HAD FAILED. THE PART WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $800, AND 3 MONTHS LATER, THE VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING THE VSC-TRAC AND TRAC-OFF LIGHTS REMAINING ILLUMINATED AFTER THE SELF-CHECK WHEN THE VEHICLE IGNITION IS TURNED ON. RESTARTING THE CAR TYPICALLY CLEARS THE LIGHTS. REPAIR SHOP HAS INDICATED THAT THE THE YAW SENSOR WILL NOT RETAIN ZERO CALIBRATION. THEY SET IT, RESTART THE VEHICLE, AND IT LOSES CALIBRATION. ERROR CODE IS NOW INDICATING THAT THE CONTROL MODULE (PART# 89541-0C050) HAS FAILED (ANOTHER $1200+ REPAIR ON TOP OF THE YAW SENSOR, WHICH WAS ALSO DEFECTIVE). THESE FAILURES CLEARLY PUT VEHICLES AT RISK OF ACCIDENTS, AND IT IS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE 2003 SEQUOIAS WERE RECALLED FOR VSC ISSUES, BUT NOT THE 2002, WHEN THE PARTS BEING REPLACED FIT BOTH YEARS. HOWEVER, IF THE CENTER MEDIAN WERE NOT THERE IT COULD PULL A VEHICLE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC ON AN UNDIVIDED HIGHWAY RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT.

WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL MORE OCCASIONS SINCE THIS INITIAL INCIDENT WHERE THERE WAS A JERKING/PULLING OF THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE. ALSO THE AIR CONDITIONING WOULD COME ON AND OFF LIKE IT WAS TRYING TO SURGE. ALSO IDLES VERY LOW, BELOW 500 RPM AND THEN FINALLY SHUTS OFF. THIS VEHICLE HAS BECOME VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. WE ARE NOT SURE WHAT TO GET FIXED ON IT SINCE WE HAVE READ THAT OTHER OWNERS ARE BEING TOLD THAT ITS ANYTHING FROM A YAW SENSOR, STEERING ANGLE SENSOR, BRAKE BOOSTER SYSTEM, OR A SKID CONTROL COMPUTER ISSUE. ALL OF THESE ARE VERY PRICEY TO GET FIXED AND THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES THAT THEY WILL EVEN CORRECT THE PROBLEM. MOST HAVE HAD THE YAW SENSOR REPLACED AND IT DID NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM. SOME OF THE MECHANICS WE HAVE TALKED TO SAID THAT THERE COULD BE BRAKE DUST OR MUD AND ROAD GRIME BUILD UP OVER THE SENSOR MAKING IT MALFUNCTION AND THAT IT SHOULD BE HOSED OFF AT AN UNDERBODY CARWASH. WE HAVEN'T TRIED THIS YET SINCE WE DIDN'T PUT MUCH FAITH IN IT UNTIL WE DISCOVERED HEARING AGAIN ON YOUTUBE. THE 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA VCS RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED DOWN TO THE 2002 MODELS AS WELL. DURING THAT ENGAGEMENT OF THE SYSTEM I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC OR INJURED VERY BADLY. SO, THE MECHANIC WENT BACK TO CHANGE OUT THE LEFT AXLE AND DID A DIAGNOSTIC TEST ON THE SENSORS, WHICH THE LEFT FRONT WAS NOT READING AND THE RIGHT WAS INTERMITTENT. THAT WAS BAFFLING TO THE MECHANIC, SO WE TALKED AND CHANGED BOTH SENSORS AND THE LEFT AXLE. HE CHECKED THE VEHICLE AND THE VSC SYSTEM STILL ENGAGED AT THE LOW SPEED BELOW 10 MPH, MOST OF THE VIBRATION WAS GONE BUT SOME WAS STILL THERE AT 70 MPH, WHICH HE AGREED WITH ME THAT IT COULD BE POSSIBLY THE DRIVE SHAFT THAT TIES INTO THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM. SO HE DECIDES TO DO THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST IN THE 4X2 MODE AND 4X4 MODE ON ALL THE SENSORS ON EACH WHEEL. IN THE 4X4 MODE ALL THE SENSORS CHECKED AND READ FINE. THE 4X2 MODE CHECK OF THE SYSTEM REVEALED A PROBLEM WITH IN THE SYSTEM THAT TIED TO THE ABS CONTROL MODULE. SO, AS OF NOW HE HAS WORKED WITH ME TO REALLY UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE TYPE TO TRY TO GET TO THE ROOT CAUSE. HE HAS SINCE NOT CHARGED ME FOR THE SENSORS, UNTIL HE CAN GET THE ABS MODULE CHECKED OUT THROUGH A CERTIFIED REPAIR MANUFACTURER WHO WORKS ON THESE PARTS ON A REGULAR BASIS.

AT WHICH TIME THERE IS NO BRAKE CONTROL, STEERING CONTROL OR ACCELERATION CONTROL FOR APPROXIMATELY 20 SECONDS THAT HAS CAUSED A FEW NEAR MISS VEHICLE COLLISIONS WITH OTHER VEHICLES OR OFF THE ROAD TOWARDS AN EMBANKMENT. THE SEQUOIA WAS TAKEN TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE CENTER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THEY CAN ONLY CLEAR THE FAULT CODE IN THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER. SINCE THE FAULT CODE HAS BEEN CLEARED, 5 MORE EPISODES OF THE SAME IDENTICAL SENERIOS WITH BOTH WET AND DRY ROAD CONDITIONS BUT NOT STANDING WATER ON THE ROADWAY, AND ALSO A COUPLE OF TIMES DURING SPEEDS BETWEEN 60-70 MPH. THIS IS AN INTERMITTENT ANOMALY, BUT HAPPENS 3-4 DAYS IN A ROW BETWEEN INSTANCES.

IN FEB. 2009, WHILE DRIVING TO WORK, THE BRAKES ON MY SEQUOIA BEGAN TO LOCK AND THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A LOUD GRINDING SOUND AND SENSOR LIGHTS BEGAN TO BLINK UNCONTROLLABLY. I COULD NOT CONTROL THE CAR STEERING AND WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS PROBLEM CONTINUED AND I TOOK IT TO MY TOYOTA DEALER WHO CHARGED ME $2700.00 AND BLAMED THE PROBLEM ON RATS. AFTER PICKING UP MY CAR FROM THE DEALERSHIP THE PROBLEM CONTINUED A FEW WEEKS LATER AND THE SAME DEALERSHIP STILL INSISTED THAT IT WAS RATS AND CHARGED ME AN ADDITIONAL $2300.00. YET THIS PROBLEM PERSISTED SO I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO HAS NO TIES WITH TOYOTA AND HE REPLACED A COMPUTER SENSOR. THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS UNTIL RECENTLY DURING A RECENT RAIN STORM IT STARTED TO ACT UP AGAIN. DRIVING THIS CAR HAS BEEN UNPREDICTABLE AND SCARY AT BEST. I CAME INTO SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS WITH OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING WHEN MY CAR WOULD LOOSE ALL ABILITY TO STEER AND MY BRAKES WOULD LOCK DURING SEVERAL INSTANCES. CONSIDERING THAT I WAS ON A CURVE AND IT WAS RAINING, I THOUGHT IT MAY BE A ONE TIME ISSUE WITH TRACTION CONTROL. I DROVE THE TRUCK FOR A FEW DAYS WITH NO ISSUES. YESTERDAY, MY WIFE WAS ROUNDING A CURVE AT ABOUT 50MPH ON A HIGHWAY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON DRY PAVEMENT AND THE TRUCK DID THE SAME THING. SHE NARROWLY AVOIDED A COLLISION AND WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SHOULDER. SINCE THEN, THE TRUCK WILL INTERMITTENTLY BEEP AND GRIND FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE THE VSC OFF LIGHT COMES ON. AS LONG AS THE LIGHT IS ON, INDICATING THE VSC IS DISENGAGED, THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS. PROBLEM SEEMS TO OCCUR MORE WHEN ROUNDING A CURVE AND BRAKING, BUT THAT IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE. IT HAS HAPPENED AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, DURING BOTH BRAKING AND ACCELERATING, AND WHILE ON FLAT GROUND OR A HILL. THE PROBLEM ONLY LASTS A FEW SECONDS, BUT YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DURING THAT TIME. THE VEHICLE WILL ACCELERATE, DECELERATE, BRAKE, OR PULL ON ITS OWN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY REPLACED THE YAW SENSOR. ONLY 3 DAYS AFTER THAT, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY REPLACED TWO BRAKE SENSORS AND A MASTER CYLINDER. TODAY, FIVE DAYS AFTER THAT, IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME, THANKFULLY AT ONLY 25 MPH WITH NO TRAFFIC. THIS IS A VERY SCARY, DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA SHOULD NOT BE IGNORING. AFTER MAKING IT HOME, MY HUSBAND DROVE THE VEHICLE INITIALLY WITHOUT ANY ISSUES. HOWEVER, HE ATTEMPTED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE STORE AND THE PROBLEM STARTED AGAIN. HE NOTED AUDIBLE ALERTS AND THE VSC/TRAC LIGHTS ILLUMINATING, GRINDING FROM WHAT SEEMED TO BE THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE. I HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 02' SEQUOIA. AT FIRST THE VSC TRAC LIGHT/ VSC OFF WOULD COME ON & GO OFF AFTER TURNING ENGINE OFF. THEN IT STARTED STAYING ON ALONG W/ ABS LIGHT & BRAKE. MY SON AND I WERE AIRLIFTED TO THE TRAUMA UNIT. I SUFFERED 2 BROKEN VERTEBRAE IN THE C AREA OF MY NECK AND A COMPRESSED DISC IN THE T REGION OF MY SPINE, CONCUSSION, CUTS, BRUISES, GLASS EMBEDDED NEAR MY EYE, AS WELL AS A SPLENIC ANEURYSM. IMMEDIATELY AFTER COMING IN, I STARTED CALLING TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM HOWEVER IT COULD COST UP TO $4500 TO FIX! THE SERVICE ADVISER THEN WENT ON TO TELL ME STEP BY STEP WHAT THEY WOULD DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM. FIRST, BY CHANGING THE YAW RATE SENSOR THAN THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER AND IF THAT DIDN'T WORK THE STEERING SENSOR, THAN THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND FINALLY THE MASTER CYLINDER. HOWEVER, I THEN LEARNED THAT "MAYBE" AFTER DOING ALL THESE REPAIRS THAT IT "MIGHT" FIX THE PROBLEM! WE THEN DROVE THE CAR TO OUR MECHANIC, WHICH IS QUITE A WAYS AWAY, AND AS WE WERE NEARING OUR DESTINATION (I WAS DRIVING THIS TIME) I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN IN TRAFFIC AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR LURCHED TO THE RIGHT, THE LIGHTS STARTED FLICKING ON AGAIN AND THE CAR MADE A BEEPING NOISE! SAME PROBLEM LIKE EVERYONE ELSE I'VE READ ABOUT. THE TRACTION CONTROL, VSC, BRAKE LIGHT,AND ABS LIGHT ON. DEALERSHIP SAYS NO RECALL BUT THEY RECALLED ALL 2003 MODELS FOR THE SAME ISSUE. VEHICLE LIGHTS ARE OFF WHEN VEHICLE IS STARTED, AFTER 2-3 MILES ALL THE LIGHTS COME ON THEN THE CAR IS HARD TO HANDLE DUE TO TRACTION CONTROL MAKING THE CAR UNSTABLE. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR QUITE A WHILE NOW. THE VSC/TRAC LIGHT ON MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA COMES ON AFTER DRIVING FOR A FEW MINUTES. WHEN THIS OCCURS IT FEELS LIKE THE VEHICLE LOOSES POWER AND GOES INTO "ANTI LOCK" MODE. IT'S A SCARY FEELING WHEN DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ONCE THE VSC WARNING LIGHTS COME ON THE VEHICLE DRIVES NORMALLY, WILL DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THAT IT COST 800.00 DOLLARS TO REPAIR. I CAN'T AFFORD TO HAVE THE REPAIR MADE AND FEEL I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO. TO START, I WANT TO STRESS THAT I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE VSC TRAC, ABS, SKID CONTROL AND BRAKE LIGHTS ALL CAME ON AND STAYED ON AS OF THE ABOVE DATE. PRIOR TO THAT DATE, THE VSC TRAC AND SKID LIGHTS WOULD COME ON FOR NO REASON, BUT WOULD GO OFF UPON TURNING OFF AND RESTARTING THE CAR. WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND STAYED ON, I READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL AND BASED ON THAT INFORMATION, WAS WORRIED THE BRAKES WOULD NOT WORK, SO I CALLED THE DEALER. WHEN I SPOKE TO SOMEONE IN THE DEALER'S REPAIR SHOP ABOUT THE PROBLEM BEFORE I BROUGHT THE CAR IN, HE SAID THAT THE WARNING LIGHTS MEANT THAT MY ABS SYSTEM WAS GONE AND IT WOULD COST $2,000 TO FIX. HE SAID THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY OR A RECALL. SO, I TOOK IT TO THE NEAREST AUTO REPAIR SHOP TO MY HOME, THAT I HAD USED PREVIOUSLY. THEY CHECKED THE WARNING LIGHTS WITH THE COMPUTER DIAGNOSTIC AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THEN, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, AND THEY CHECKED THE WARNING LIGHTS AND SAID THAT THE PROBLEM WAS LOW VOLTAGE WITH THE BATTERY. I HAD RECENTLY BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY, SO I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE FIRST PLACE, WHICH CHECKED THE BATTERY AND SAID IT WAS FINE. SO I RECEIVED CONFLICTING MESSAGES FROM THE DEALER. HOWEVER, SINCE OTHER OWNERS WITH MY YEAR/MODEL TOYOTA HAVE HAD SAFETY PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME ISSUE AND TOYOTA HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE 2003 MODEL AND THEY HAVE ISSUED A RECALL, I BELIEVE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE OWNED MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SINCE JANUARY OF 2002. SINCE THEN WE HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES AND NOW THE VSC/ABS SKID CONTROL. FOR STARTERS THE FRONT BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS HAD TO BE CHANGED AND RE-SURFACED WITH APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THEN THE SAME THING AGAIN WITH APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES. BEFORE THE SECOND REPAIR I DID SOME RESEARCH AND SAW THERE WAS A TSB FOR LARGER CALIPERS AND ROTORS ON THE VEHICLE. THIS IS A CLASSIC CASE OF COST CUTTING AND UNDER-ENGINEERING TO INCREASE PROFIT MARGINS. I WENT TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND ASK FOR THE REPAIR TO BE DONE BY TOYOTA AT THEIR EXPENSE. THEY WOULD NOT DO THIS FOR ME. NOW WITH APPROXIMATELY 99,000 MILES ON THE CAR I HAVE A FAILURE OF THE VSC/ABS SKID CONTROL. THIS IS GOING TO BE A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR. CONSUMER STATES FAILED VEHICLE SKID CONTROL AND ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THE 2003 MODEL MANUFACTURED BETWEEN APRIL 1, 2002 THROUGH APRIL 17, 2003. THE CONSUMER STATED HIS VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED IN JULY 2002 AND IT ALSO HAS THE SAME PART NUMBER AS THE 2003 MODEL. THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE INTO TRAFFIC FROM A STOP, THE VEHICLE WOULD START TO MOVE, THEN IT WOULD SUDDENLY STOP ACCELERATING WHICH LEFT HIM IN TRAFFIC AT 10-15 MPH, THEN A SERIES OF LOUD NOISES EMITTED FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE AGAIN. THE CONSUMER STATED IT WOULD HAPPEN EVERY TIME HE CAME TO A STOP AND SUBSEQUENT ATTEMPT TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION, THE VSC AND ABS LIGHTS ON THE DASH INDICATED THE SYSTEMS WERE OFF. IN TURN, THE VEHICLE WOULD JUST HAVE TRADITIONAL BRAKES WITHOUT THE SAFETY OF THE ABS AND VSC. THE VSC AND THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND READ THE OWNER'S MANUAL WHICH INDICATED THAT IT WAS FINE TO CONTINUE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VSC, ECU AND AN UNKNOWN SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WE IGNORED IT BECAUSE WE HAD JUST HAD IT IN TO THE DEALER, IT SEEMED TO BE A NUISANCE IN AN OLDER VEHICLE BUT NOT DANGEROUS. ABOUT 165,000 MILES THE VEHICLE DEVELOPED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER IN TRAFFIC. WE SPECULATED IT WAS THE LEVER THAT SHIFTS FROM 4WD TO 2WD. THE DEALER REPLACED THAT FOR $400, THE LIGHTS WERE OFF FOR 3 DAYS, THEN BACK ON. NOW, WE HAVE HAD MAYBE FIVE INSTANCES OF SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. THIS TOTAL LOSS OF POWER USUALLY OCCURS AFTER DRIVING 10 MINUTES LOCALLY, AND AFTER STOPPING AT A LIGHT. TURNING THE IGNITION OFF, AND RESTARTING FIXES THE ISSUE. TANSKY TOYOTA ACTS LIKE THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING, BUT WHEN I LOOK ONLINE EVERY TOYOTA BLOG IS FULL OF PEOPLE JUST LIKE ME. I KNOW IT IS AN OLD VEHICLE. ABOUT A YEAR AGO, I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS THAT'S RELATED TO THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL (VSC) SYSTEM ON MY 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE PROBLEM OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY AND WHEN IT DOES OCCURS, IT HAPPENS DURING INITIAL ACCELERATION. DURING THIS TIME, THE VSC LIGHT WOULD START BLINKING AND I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ACCELERATE. BRAKING WOULD REQUIRE TREMENDOUS FORCE APPLIED TO ACTIVATE IT. THERE WAS AT LEAST ONE INCIDENT WHERE THE VSC ACTIVATED DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING, BUT THAT INCIDENT LASTED APPROXIMATELY 5 OR SO SECONDS. HOWEVER, IT DID REQUIRE THAT I SUDDENLY APPLY THE BRAKE AND STARTED PUMPING IT FOR THE VSC TO DE-ACTIVATE. DUE TO THE INTERMITTENT NATURE, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP FOR DIAGNOSTIC AND THEY DID FIND THAT ERROR CODES WERE PRESENT RELATING TO THE VSC. THOUGH THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE PINPOINTED ON THE INITIAL VISIT TO THE REPAIR SHOP. SUBSEQUENT OCCURRENCES PROMPTED ME TO BRING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC. EVENTUALLY IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO ME TO REPLACE THE "SPEED SENSORS" WHICH I AUTHORIZED. AFTER THE REPLACEMENT, THE PROBLEM TEND TO HAVE GONE AWAY. RECENTLY, I STARTED TO INTERMITTENTLY EXPERIENCE A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH VSC LIGHT BLINKING BRIEFLY WHENEVER I PULL OUT OF A DRIVE WAY PERFORMING AT LEAST AN 80 DEGREE TURN. THIS TIME AROUND THE PROBLEM ISN'T AS SEVERE AND IS VERY INFREQUENT. I WOULD SAY IN A WEEK OF COMMUTING, I WOULD EXPERIENCE IT MAYBE ONCE OR TWICE. OF COURSE THIS IS COMPARED TO PREVIOUS INCIDENTS WHERE I WAS EXPERIENCING THE VSC PROBLEM ALMOST HALF THE TIME. EARLIER THIS WEEK, I READ THERE WAS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA RECALL WHICH HAS THE EXACT SYMPTOM AND PROBLEM I'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING ON MY 2002 SEQUOIA. I NOTED TODAY THE RECALL OF 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA'S DUE TO ISSUES WITH THE VSC SYSTEM. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE THE 2002 MODELS AS I HAVE HAD RECURRING ISSUES WITH THE VSC SINCE DAY 1. AT LOW SPEED, PARTICULARLY ON GRADES OR WHILE MAKING SHARP TURNS, THE VSC WILL CAUSE MY VEHICLE TO TEMPORARILY LOSE POWER. I HAVE REPORTED THIS ON SEVERAL OCCASION BOTH TO TOYOTA AND VIA TELEPHONE. IT IS SO BAD THAT I NOW KNOW LOCATIONS ON MY REGULAR DRIVES DURING WHICH THIS WILL OCCUR. SO, I EITHER GO A LITTLE FASTER THAN I MIGHT OTHERWISE ON GRADES OR I SWERVE OUT BEFORE MAKING TURNS TO MAKE THE ANGLE LESS ACUTE. OBVIOUSLY, NOT THE SAFETY WE'D EXPECT IN A $40K VEHICLE. THIS ISSUE ALSO OCCURS GOING OVER SLIGHTLY JARRING BUMPS SUCH AS STEEP SPEEDBUMPS OR POTHOLES. THE VEHICLE TEMPORARILY LOSES POWER, WHICH IN THIS CASE CAN BE POSSIBLY EVEN MORE DANGEROUS BECAUSE WE ARE OFTEN BEING FOLLOWED BY OTHER VEHICLES TRAVELING AT NORMAL SPEED. *TR

WHILE DRIVING AT EVEN SPEEDS AND WITHOUT TURNING THE WHEEL OR APPLYING THE BRAKES OR GAS, THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY SWERVE TO THE RIGHT ALL BY ITSELF. ADDITIONALLY, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ENGAGING EVEN WHEN I AM NOT IN A SKID OR HEAVY BRAKING PATTERN. I HAVE FILED TWO COMPLAINTS WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AND BECAUSE I FEAR FOR MY SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF MY PASSENGERS, I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND HAD THE "YAW RATE SENSOR" REPLACED. I VISITED TWO DEALERSHIPS IN MY AREA AND BOTH WERE FAMILIAR WITH SEQUOIAS (MODEL YEARS 2001-2003 AND SOME 2004) HAVING THIS PROBLEM. MY INTERNET RESEARCH SUGGESTS THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. ACCORDING TO TOYOTA, MY YAW RATE SENSOR IS FAULTY AND IT DETECTS THAT MY CAR IS SKIDDING EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT. WHEN THAT HAPPENS, THE SKID CONTROL SYSTEM ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT THE SKID. HOWEVER, SINCE I WASN'T SKIDDING TO BEGIN WITH, THE CORRECTION CAUSES THE CAR TO SWERVE RAPIDLY AND UNCONTROLLABLY TO THE RIGHT, GENERALLY INTO THE NEXT LANE. I HAVE NARROWLY AVOIDED HITTING CARS SEVERAL TIMES. TOYOTA TELLS ME THAT THERE IS ALSO A BRAKE BOOSTER PROBLEM AND THAT I MAY NEED TO REPLACE THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER. I FIND THIS UNACCEPTABLE. I DO NOT HAVE THE $3-5K TO DO ALL THIS WORK. I DID REPLACE THE YAW RATE SENSOR, WHICH COST ME $811 AND I'M HOPING THAT WILL FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT THIS IS NOT A MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR ISSUE. THIS IS A FAULTY PART SOLD BY A CAR MANUFACTURER AND THEY ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING TO HELP THE CONSUMERS WHO PURCHASED FROM THEM. BASED ON MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, I AM CERTAIN PEOPLE HAVE DIED OR WILL DIE FROM THIS PROBLEM. IT COMES ON SO QUICKLY THAT YOU CANNOT POSSIBLY AVOID IT. THE IS A KNOWN ISSUE AND THIS PROBLEM IS BEING EXPERIENCED BY MANY SEQUOIA OWNERS. NORMAL DRIVING WILL LEAD UP TO THIS FAILURE --- AGAIN IT IS RANDOM AND NOT LINKED TO ANY ONE EVENT. WHEN IT HAPPENS THE OPERATOR LOOSES ALL TRACTION CONTROL ALONG WITH SEVERAL LIGHTS (INCLUSIVE OF THE BRAKE LIGHT) BEING DISPLAYED ON THE DASH. THE CAR IS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL IN THE SNOW OR RAIN GIVEN THE REAR WHEELS START TO SLIP IMMEDIATELY. WHILE DRIVING A 2002 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 2 WHEEL DRIVE SUV NEAR THE END OF MARCH 2009, THE TRAC OFF, VSC TRAC, BRAKE AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS SIMULTANEOUSLY CAME ON. I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH ON A DRY ROAD AT NIGHT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. I MOVED OFF THE HIGHWAY TO CHECK THE MANUAL WHICH EMPHASIZED THE POSSIBLE SERIOUSNESS OF EACH LIGHT. IT SAID TO CONTACT A TOYOTA DEALER. I CALLED EARNHARDT TOYOTA IN MESA ARIZONA WHO FINALLY WORKED ON THE VEHICLE SEVERAL DAYS LATER FOR THE VSC/TRAC/BRAKE/ABS PROBLEM, AND A FRONT BRAKE VIBRATION/PULSATION. NO HELP ON THE PULSATION PROBLEM SINCE I WAS TOLD I NEEDED TO TURN THE ROTORS AGAIN. ON THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL/TRACTION CONTROL/ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM/BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS, THE SERVICE ASSOCIATE OFFERED THAT IT WAS A "COMMON" PROBLEM, COULD BE CAUSED BY A LOOSE GAS CAP OR AN EXPENSIVE COMPUTER (IN THE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS). HE SATED THAT NO "CODES" WERE SET OTHER THAN A "LOW VOLTAGE" WHICH COULD BE CAUSED BY A BAD BATTERY OR CORRODED CONNECTION. I CLEANED THE BATTERY TERMINALS COMPLETELY, CHECKED THE BATTERY, AND MADE SURE THE GAS CAP WAS TIGHT. THE WARNING LIGHTS NOW COME ON AT SOME POINT EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE SEQUOIA. EARNHARDT TOYOTA TOLD ME IT SHOULD NOT AFFECT THE ACTUAL BRAKING SYSTEMS. HOW DO THEY KNOW THAT? BEING TOLD OF A FALSE CONTINUOUS OR INTERMITTENT SAFETY WARNING LIGHT CAN LULL ONE INTO A QUESTIONABLE SENSE OF SAFETY. THESE LIGHTS AND SAFETY SYSTEMS NEED TO WORK RELIABLY WITHOUT HAVING TOYOTA JUST SAY THEY KNOW ABOUT THIS COMMON PROBLEM. DOES IT AFFECT ACTUAL VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL AND EMERGENCY BRAKING? ON NUMEROUS INTERNET SITES, I FIND THIS SAME PROBLEM IS MENTIONED FREQUENTLY. ALSO A LARGE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ARE ON FILE NOW WITH THE NHTSA. I RELY ON THE WARNING LIGHTS AND THEIR UNDERLYING SYSTEMS TO WORK AS ADVERTISED, BUT TOYOTA NOW MAKES ME DOUBT THAT RELIANCE. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED AND PROBLEM COULD NOT BE REPLICATED. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED ON THIS VEHICLE. HAD HISTORY OF AT LEAST 3-5 SEPARATE INCIDENTS FAR APART IN OCCURRENCE BUT RESOLVES OR HIDES ITSELF. NO PARTS REPLACED AS OF YET, BUT AWARE OF OTHER OWNER'S HAVING SAME PROBLEMS WITH VSC/ABS /TRAC ON THIS TOYOTA MODEL. *TR
