After several years of fighting problems with, after braking to a brief stop, the loss of power/abs grinding when accelerating and turning right, now the ABS is completely dysfunctional. Both TRC lights will turn on and usually the parking brake, and when braking at speeds less than 10mph the abs will activate and prevent bring the truck to a stop without pumping them, on dry pavement. When the ABS light turns on, then braking is possible, but all pressure is gone from brake booster and brakes sound like they're grinding, not like the sound of abs engaging. Very dangerous to drive in snow as front brakes work but drive axle doesn't disengage when the brake pedal is depressed. Regular mechanic won't engage with diagnosing issues as he feels the problem is partly computer malfunction and Toyota won't allow for used part mismatching. ABS/ECU is failed.

Malfunction indicator lights - Check engine, VSC off and TRAC off. The vehicle goes into limp mode. The issue is both a mechanical and engineering defect causing the override of the entire AIP system. Parts affected are Air injection pumps, Air switching valves, Air pump inlets/covers, Gaskets/connectors/clamps and Speed sensors.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN UNKNOWN DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED, BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS UNDETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VIN AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE UNKNOWN.

MY VEHICLE WILL SUDDENLY ACCELERATE FOR NO REASON. THIS SUDDEN "UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF POWER" COMES ON WITH NO NOTICE. I HAVE ALMOST HIT A PERSON AND HAVE BEEN IN ONE CAR ACCIDENT AS A RESULT. THIS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED ABOUT 10 TO 12 TIMES. THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION HAS OCCURRED BOTH IN STATIONARY & IN MOTION; AND BOTH ON A CITY STREET AND HIGHWAY. TURNING HAS NOT BEEN AFFECTED BY UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. TOYOTA HAS TESTED AND PROVIDED THE ATTACHED REPORT TO ME BUT WITHOUT ANY INTERPRETATION. MY VEHICLE REPAIR COST BECAUSE OF THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WAS $4,529.24. TOYOTA STILL HAS NOT RESPONDED TO THIS DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. I EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH ENGINE WARNING AND VSC TRAC OFF LIGHTS GOING ON. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALSO CAME ON. MY FAMILY AND I WERE ON A TRIP AND OUR SEQUOIA ALL OF A SUDDEN LOST POWER. IT SLOWED DOWN DRAMATICALLY EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE WAS FINE. IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION BECAUSE WE WERE ON AN INTERSTATE WHERE THE SPEED IS 70 MPH. I ALSO EXPERIENCED ALL THE BRAKES MAKING A MASSIVE GRINDING NOISE WHILE GOING SLOW INTO A RESTAURANT. (THE BRAKES HAVE LESS THAN 3000 MILES ON THEM.) SAYS I MAY HAVE: A) FAULTY VACUUM SWITCHING VALVE (VSV) FOR AIR INJECTION CONTROL CIRCUIT, B)FAULTY AIR SWITCHING VALVE NUMBER 2, OR C)FAULTY VSV FOR AIR INJECTION SYSTEM. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED TO MY SEQUOIA, AND THIS SEEMS TO BE A RECURRING ISSUES FOR TOYOTA SEQUOIA OWNERS AND IN FACT IT IS A RECURRING ISSUES FOR OTHER MODELS AS WELL. WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSC OFF LIGHT, VSC TRAC LIGHT, AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT ALL CAME ON AT ONCE, AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING, AND I EXPERIENCED A DRAMATIC DECREASE IN VEHICLE POWER. I DROVE THE VEHICLE HOME NOTICING A DRASTIC CHANGE IN ACCELERATION AS THE SEQUOIA WOULD NOT ACCELERATE NORMALLY; IT WOULD ACCELERATE AT A SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED RATE, TOPPING OUT AT 35MPH ON THE FLATS, 30 MPH ON AN INCLINE, I WAS ABLE TO REACH 70MPH GOING DOWN HILL ON A HIGHWAY. SINCE THAT DAY, DURING START UP, THE ENGINE MAKES A HIGH-PITCH VACUUM NOISE, WHICH DROPS OFF AND NORMAL ENGINE SOUND RETURNS. ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS ARE NORMAL, UNTIL 10-15 SECONDS AFTER START, WHEN THE VSC OFF/VSC TRAC/BRAKE LIGHTS ALL ILLUMINATE, AND REMAIN ON UNTIL THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF AND THE POOR ACCELERATION AND DECREASE POWER ARE NOW THE NORM. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SAFETY ISSUE SHOULD THIS HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ACCELERATING OUT OF AN INTERSECTION, OR NEEDING MORE POWER ON A HIGHWAY.

THE "BRAKE" LIGHT HAS CONTINUED TO COME ON MULTIPLE TIMES PER WEEK SINCE MAY OF 2015 AND THE OTHER TWO LIGHTS STILL COME ON OCCASIONALLY. IN FACT, ON MY 800 FOOT DRIVE BACK FROM PICKING UP MY LUNCH TODAY, THE "BRAKE" LIGHT WAS ON. EACH TIME THE OTHER 2 COME ON, IT CAUSES THE BREAKS TO GRIND AND IT IS VERY HARD TO STOP. THERE WAS JUST OVER 120,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE AT PURCHASE. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS FORUMS ONLINE STATING ISSUES WITH THIS MODEL, 2004, AND 2003 MODELS FOR THE SAME ISSUE BUT TOYOTA HAS REFUSED TO DO A RECALL AND EXPECTS CUSTOMERS TO PAY FOR SOMETHING IS OBVIOUSLY AN ISSUE THROUGHOUT THESE PARTICULAR MODELS. I WAS ONLY DRIVING ABOUT 25 MPH SINCE I WAS IN THE CITY AND NOT ON THE HIGHWAY YET. I PULLED OVER CUT THE TRUCK OFF AND THEN BACK ON, THE LIGHTS WERE OUT, BUT WITHIN ANOTHER MILE THEY WERE BACK ON. I AVOIDED THE HIGHWAY SINCE MY BRAKES WERE HAVING PROBLEMS AND IT WAS POURING RAIN. THE NEXT DAY THEY WERE OFF SO I DROVE BACK TO WORK BUT WHEN I WAS ON THE WAY HOME THEY ALL CAME BACK ON, THIS TIME IT WAS THE AFTERNOON AND NOT RAINING SO I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THEY RAN THE CODES AND SAID MY CODES WERE C1247 STROKE SENSOR AND C136 MASTER PRESS SENSOR - THEY SAID THIS WAS PART OF A SKID CONTROL ECM THAT CONTROLLED MY ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM! VERY SCARY TO THINK MY BRAKES WERE NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE FIXED FOR $1042.82 AND MAY ALSO NEED TO REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER AT $715.85. WHEN I LOOKED UP THE PROBLEM ONLINE I FOUND THAT THIS WAS VERY COMMON FAILURE WITH 2003-05 MODELS AND THAT TOYOTA HAD ALREADY RECALLED THE 2003 PROBLEM. MY SERVICE TECH SAID THAT HE WAS NOT AWARE THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN OUT FOR IT. I WAS VERY SCARED TO DRIVE, BUT THE TECH SAID THAT MY BRAKES STILL WORKED BUT THAT THE ANTI LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WILL NOT STOP "ON A DIME" BUT WILL SKID OR SLIDE. FOUND DTC'S C1223, C1244, C1247, C1310. PROVIDED ESTIMATE FOR UPDATED SKID CONTROL ECU @ $905 + TAX". AS THE CUSTOMER, I DECLINED TO SCHEDULE. THEN DURING A PAST WINTER STORM, BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY AGAIN, THE SAME THING OCCURRED. VERY CONCERNED THAT THIS BRAKING SYSTEM IS DEFECTED IN ANY WET/SNOWY/ICE WEATHER. I HAVE HAD TO DIVERT TO DRIVING MY 1998 HONDA ACCORD IN SNOW INSTEAD OF THE SEQUOIA. I AM VERY CONCERNED DRIVING THIS SEQUOIA WITH MY KIDS IN CAR AND BRAKING AT ANYTIME. I FEEL AN UPDATED SOFTWARE/LOGIC IN ECU OR AN UPDATED SKID CONTROL ECU IS VALID ENOUGH TO SAY THEY HAVE A KNOWN ISSUE THAT IS 'SAFETY' RELATED, AND TOYOTA SHOULD BUCK UP COVERING THIS AS WARRANTY. 3 INCIDENTS IN THE LAST 90DAYS, EACH ONE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION BETWEEN 15-40MPH WITH 5 PASSENGERS AND IN TRAFFIC. ON EACH OCCASION, THE BRAKES SUDDENLY ENGAGED, CAUSING A LOUD BANG/THUNK SOUND FOLLOWED BY A SEVERE SHAKE IN THE VEHICLE. SPEED & CONTROL WAS DRASTICALLY REDUCED TO THE POINT OF BEING UNCONTROLLABLE. WITHIN SECONDS, THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, BRAKE AND MAINTENANCE LAMPS ILLUMINATED. VEHICLE WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE, AS IF THE BRAKES WERE FULLY ENGAGED. AFTER PULLING OVER, WE SHUTDOWN THE VEHICLE AND LET IT SIT A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, ON RESTARTING, ALL LAMPS WERE ON, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVE-ABLE HOWEVER, THE BRAKES WE STILL BEING APPLIED BUT SLIGHTLY ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO MOVE BUT ON RELEASE OF THE ACCELERATOR, THE VEHICLE SLOWED RAPIDLY. AFTER DROPPING OFF VEHICLE TO A LOCAL NON-DEALER SERVICE CENTER ON EACH OF THE FIRST 2 INCIDENTS, THE CODES WERE NO-LONGER ACTIVE AND THE SHOP INDICATED THAT NOTHING COULD BE DONE UNLESS THE CODES WERE ACTIVE AGAIN. RESEARCH INDICATES THE 2003-04 HAD SKID CONTROL COMPUTER RECALL, REFLASHING/REPROGRAMMING THE COMPUTER BUT ONLY A TSB WAS ISSUED ON THE 2005 MODEL YEAR. AFTER THE THIRD INCIDENT, THE MOST SEVERE, WE WENT TO A TOYOTA DEALER. THEY CONFIRMED THE RECALL & THE TSB. IN DISCUSSIONS WITH THE SERVICE ADVISOR'S AND TECHNICIANS, THEY BOTH REPORTED THAT THEY HAVE HAD NUMEROUS 2005 MODELS WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THE DEALER INFORMED US THAT THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AT A TOTAL COST OF $1100. HOWEVER, NUMEROUS POSTS ON ONLINE BLOGS & FORUMS INDICATE THE PROBLEM PERSISTS EVEN AFTER THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER WAS REPLACED. WE ARE LUCKY THAT THIS EVENT DID NOT RESULT IS AN ACCIDENT AS WE WERE IN TRAFFIC AND VEHICLES BEHIND US WOULD NOT EXPECT OUR VEHICLE TO SUDDENLY BRAKE CAUSING THEM CRASH INTO US AT FULL SPEED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA SEQUOIA LIMITED. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 40 MPH WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE AND MAINTAINED THE INITIAL SPEED. THE ENGINE TRACTION AND STABILITY WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED DURING THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO SAID THAT IT WAS A CODE FOR THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION VALVE STICKING OPEN, BUT HE ALSO TOLD US THAT THEY HAVE REPLACED THE VALVES BEFORE AND IT ENDED UP BEING THE PUMP. AT AROUND 51,000 MILES THE ABS AND VSC LIGHT CAME ON. LIGHTS WENT OUT 2 DAYS LATER. IT WOULD COME ON INTERMITTENTLY ABOUT EVERY OTHER MONTH FOR ABOUT 2 DAYS THEN GO OUT. TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE FOUND NO CODES STORED. NOW IT HAS 100,00 MILES AND THE LIGHT STAYS ON. TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE SKID CONTROL ECU NEEDS REPLACED. WAS TOLD IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR MY YEAR SEQUOIA. I WAS TOLD THEN THAT WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE ON, THE FUNCTIONS DO NOT WORK. I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK WHEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN DISAPPEARED. TWO DAYS LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THE VEHICLE STARTED TO RIDE ROUGH LIKE IT NEED A TUNE-UP. THE ENGINE LIGHT DISAPPEARED AND THE VEHICLE DROVE FINE UNTIL I REACHED HOME. THE ENGINE LIGHT, VSC OFF AND VSC TRAC ALL CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE WAS RIDING REALLY ROUGH. I TOOK IT TO FIRESTONE SO THEY COULD LOOK AT BUT THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. SO I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA SO THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY THOUGHT IT WAS CARBON BUILD UP AROUND THE CYLINDERS, SO THEY CLEANED ALL EIGHT CYLINDERS BUT THAT DIDN'T WORK. I STILL HAD TO PAY FOR IT. THE FINALE SOLUTION WAS FOR THEM TO TEAR DOWN THE ENGINE. THEY CLAIMED THAT PISTON #3 WASN'T WORKING AT ITS FULL CAPACITY AFTER RUNNING A COMPRESSION TEST BUT THEY'RE NOT 100% SURE. THE COST FOR THEM TO TAKE THE HEAD OFF WOULD BE $862 AND ANOTHER $862 TO PUT IT BACK TOGETHER PLUS WHAT EVER REAL PROBLEM IS. THE SERVICE GUY AT TOYOTA SAID THAT HE HAS SEEN THREE SIMILAR PROBLEMS LIKE THIS AND IT COST THE CUSTOMER AROUND $3000. MY DVD PLAYER WASN'T WORKING SO THE TECH TESTED IT AND STATED THAT POWER WAS GOING TO IT AND THAT IT SHOULD WORK. THREE WEEKS LATER THE DVD PLAYER WORKED BUT NOW MY BACK WINDOW DIDN'T. WHEN I PUSH THE BUTTON FOR THE BACK WINDOW THE BACK WIPER COMES ON. *TR

STARTED CAR AND HEAR A LOUD WHINING NOISE BUT NO LIGHTS CAME ON. WITHIN 2 DAYS THE WHINING NOISE WAS NOT HEARD WHEN STARTING CAR BUT TRAC OFF, VSC LIGHT, AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WERE ALL ON. TOOK THE TRUCK TO MECHANIC AND HE CHANGED THE BATTERY AND FLUSHED THE BRAKE FLUID. LIGHTS WERE OFF FOR ABOUT 2 MORE STARTS OF THE TRUCK AND ALL LIGHTS WERE BACK ON. TOOK IT BACK TO THE MECHANIC THE NEXT DAY AND HE KEPT THE TRUCK FOR 2 DAYS, CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD HIM TO REPLACE THE AIR INJECTION DRIVER. THIS WAS DONE 12 NOV 10 AND BY 13 NOV 10 ALL LIGHTS ARE BACK ON AGAIN AND THE TRUCK IS HAVING ISSUES PICKING UP SPEED. *TR

SHE SHIFTED THE VEHICLE INTO NEUTRAL AND ALLOWED IT TO ROLL FORWARD AND STOP. AFTER THE VEHICLE STOPPED MOVING SHE TURNED IT OFF AND THEN BACK ON. UPON RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE RPMS BEGAN TO INCREASE EXCESSIVELY FORCING HER TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THEY WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE PREVIOUSLY OCCURRED ON TOW OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 60,195.

THE CAR ACTUALLY FROZE UP 2. INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS REMAINED ILLUMINATED. 3. THE BRAKES FAILED ON ONE OCCASION AND QUICKLY CAME BACK, BUT MADE METAL GRINDING NOISE. 4. THE CAR OCCASIONALLY THINKS THAT WE ARE SKIDDING OUT OF CONTROL AND BEGINS PULSATING THE BRAKES 7. WHILE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY THE BRAKES ENGAGED. I WAS DRIVING THRU MY NEIGHBORHOOD RETURNING HOME AFTER A HEAVY SNOWFALL. I HAD MY FAMILY IN THE CAR AND TO HAVE A LITTLE FUN I WOULD GIVE MY SEQUOIA A LITTLE EXTRA GAS AS I WOULD GO AROUND A CORNER TO GET THE TIRES TO SPIN A LITTLE. WITH TRACTION CONTROL AND ANTI-LOCK BRAKES IT WAS NOTHING SIGNIFICANT BUT THE KIDS THOUGHT IT WAS FUN. AS I NEARED MY HOUSE I ACCELERATED ONE LAST TIME BEFORE I WAS GOING TO TURN INTO MY DRIVEWAY. UNFORTUNATELY THIS TIME THERE WAS UNINTENTIONAL ACCELERATION. I DON'T HAVE THE STOCK FLOOR MATS, BUT EVEN SO I TRIED USING MY FOOT TO LIFT THE GAS PEDAL. THAT DID NOT WORK. SINCE I WAS ON A DEADEND RESIDENTIAL STREET, I OBVIOUSLY DID NOT WANT THIS CONDITION TO GET OUT OF CONTROL. WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THAT SITUATION IT IS EASY TO SAY THAT YOU NEED TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL, BUT WHEN THE SITUATION IS OCCURRING YOU REALLY ONLY HAVE TIME TO REACT. I PUT THE SEQUOIA INTO PARK. FORTUNATELY SINCE IT WAS A HEAVY SNOW, AND SINCE I WAS PROBABLY ONLY GOING 10-15 MPH THE CAR CAME TO A STOP QUICKLY BUT NO ONE WAS THRUST FORWARD. I HAD WARNING LIGHTS ON ALL OVER MY DASH. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED AND THE LIGHTS WENT OFF AND THE CAR SEEMED TO FUNCTION NORMALLY AFTERWARDS THANKFULLY. I HAVE NOT TAKEN IT IN FOR THE RECALL BECAUSE THE CURRENT RECALL FOR THE 2005 SEQUOIA SAYS THAT IT IS A FLOOR MAT ISSUE. IT IS NOT. I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU ARE PURSUING FURTHER INVESTIGATION INTO THE REAL CAUSE OF THIS VERY POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITION. *TR

SUDDENLY, THERE WAS NO POWER RESPONSE DURING ACCELERATION. THE SPEED RATE WAS REDUCED WITH CONTINUOUS PRESSURE APPLIED TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THEY HAVE REPLACED A COMPUTER IN FRONT THUS FAR. NOTE: THE SERVICE REP. IS WORKING ON THIS PROBLEM DILIGENTLY. HOWEVER, THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM AND A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. THE LAST TIME THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED WAS ON 10/17/2006. ON 10/17/2006 THE CONTACT BOUGHT A NEW TRANSMISSION BECAUSE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WERE MULTIPLE DRIVE LINE REPAIRS, AND THAT THE CAR WAS LUNGING FORWARD AND MAKING A CLUNKING SOUNDS. TWO DAYS AFTER REPLACING THE ENGINE THE CONTACT RETURNED WITH THE VEHICLE BECAUSE IT WAS LURCHING FORWARD AND MAKING A CLUNKING NOISE WHILE BEING DRIVEN. THE CONTACT HAS TRIED TO GET THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED SINCE THE NEW ENGINE WITHOUT SUCCESS. *AK

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND VSC/TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS KEEP COMING ON. TOOK IT TO TOYOTA OF LEWISVILLE, TEXAS ON 30 JUNE 06 AND AGAIN TO TOYOTA OF KILLEEN, TEXAS ON 15 JULY 06. TOYOTA OF LEWISVILLE TOLD ME IT WAS BAD GAS AND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. ON 13 JUNE 06 THE LIGHT CAME ON BUT WENT OFF AFTER A COUPLE OF MILES. ON MY WAY TO DALLAS ON 14 JUN 06 THE SAME THING HAPPENED. LATER THAT DAY ON MY WAY BACK FROM DALLAS THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON AND I TOOK MY SEQUOIA TO TOYOTA OF KILLEEN ON 15 JULY 06. THEY WORKED ON MY SEQUOIA UNTIL 25 JULY 06. I ONLY HAD MY TRUCK FOR A DAY WHEN THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON. I TOOK THE TRUCK BACK TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY, 27 JULY 06, AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TURNED OFF THE LIGHTS AND AN HOUR LATER TOLD ME MY SEQUOIA WAS READY AND THAT IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTED TO BRING IT BACK. RIGHT THERE IN THE SERVICE BAY THE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE DEALERSHIP HAS HAD IT EVER SINCE. I TALKED TO THE SERVICE REP AND HE INFORMS ME THAT THE COMPUTER HAS BEEN REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM PERSIST. THEY CHECKED THE FUEL AND DRAINED THE FUEL AND THE PROBLEM PERSIST. *JB
