I have had the traction control go on while driving on the highway even when I turn it off. Sometimes the VSC and TRAC OFF lights go on while driving. The roads are dry. Whenever I take it in to the mechanic, all the lights are off. They pulled a zero calibration code and recalibrated. It still kept happening. Then I was driving around a curve on highway speeds when the traction control light went on and the van suddenly braked on its own and I almost lost control. The tires are new and the roads were dry.
Issues with VSC. The sensor alarm goes off when driving at more than 50 mph and slightly turning the steering wheel. The car brakes itself and this is DANGEROUS. It happens all the time, it has been more than 5-6 years and we are to the point of not using the car on the freeway to prevent a potential fatal accident. I found posts describing the same issue with this model of Toyota. Car should be recalled to get this fixed.
The Vehicle VSC Engaged multiple times even at low speed of 30 mph under the road speed limit. The brake applied and even the vehicle stop to respond to the acceleration. We have 3 little kids and old parents in this vehicle.Toyota should own this problem and fix it free of charge as a factory recall.
The traction control light is coming on during low speed turns on dry pavement.
2008 Toyota Sienna. Driving down steep right turns, VSC light comes on, urgent beeping alarm and tires grip and grip vehicle brakes going 20-30+ mph on dry road. Very scary and dangerous, and has continues repeatedly over the past year on curvy right turns. Local mechanics don't know what is wrong with the vehicle. WHILE ON AN ON-RAMP; THE VEHICLE AT ABOUT 35 MPH STARTED BLINKING THE SLIP LIGHT AND SLOWED THE VAN DOWN, ALSO CAUSING I THINK THE BRAKES TO ENGAGE WITH FORCE. HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING NORMALLY AND ON RAMPS. I HAD THE RACK AND PINION REPLACED AND STILL HAS DONE THIS.

THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL WILL UNEXPECTEDLY ENGAGE IN INSTANCES WHERE IT SHOULDN'T ACTIVATE. THE MOST COMMON IS A LONG, SLIGHT CURVE ON AT FREEWAY SPEEDS ON DRY PAVEMENT. THE SECOND MOST COMMON SCENARIO IS ACCELERATING TO ENTER THE FREEWAY. WHEN VSC ENGAGES, THE VEHICLE WILL LURCH TO THE SIDE IT WAS ACTIVATED ON AND CURTAIL ANY ACCELERATION. THIS MAKES THE VEHICLE HARD TO CONTROL WHEN ON A FREEWAY CURVE AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE TO MERGE ONTO THE FREEWAY, CAUSING UNEXPECTED MOTION THAT IS A HAZARD TO REMAINING ON THE ROAD OR CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO BE IN AN ACCIDENT WITH OTHER VEHICLES. THERE IS NO INDICATION THAT THERE ARE MALFUNCTIONS IN ANY SYSTEM THAT WOULD CAUSE THIS TO OCCUR. NOTE: MILEAGE ON THE ODOMETER IS ~170,000 MILES.

WHILE DRIVING MY STEERING LOCKED UP. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL GARAGE AND THEY INFORMED ME I NEED A NEW RACK AND PINION.
ABOUT A FIVE YEARS AGO THE SLIP INDICATOR LIGHT (CAR WITH SWERVY LINES) STARTED COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY WHILE TURNING ON HIGHWAYS ETC. (BUT NOT WHEN ANY RISK OF TIRES SLIPPING). I BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA THREE DIFFERENT TIMES OVER THE YEARS AND TOYOTA ALWAYS STATES THEY CAN NOT DUPLICATE ISSUE AND STATES THEY CAN?T FIX IT BUT MAYBE DRIVE SLOWER (REALLY IT HAS NOTHING TO WITH MY SPEED AFTER YEARS OF DEALING WITH THIS ITS BEEN SOMETHING WE JUST DEAL WITH). THE VSC LIGHT ALSO COMES ON AND ALARM SOMETIMES SOUNDS WHILE DRIVING. TWO MORE TRIPS TO TOYOTA AND SEVERAL VISITS TO DIFFERENT MECHANICS AND NOBODY CAN FIND OUT THE PROBLEM. IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS THE ABS SYSTEM IS ALSO BEING ACTIVATED WITHOUT ME APPLYING THE BRAKES. IT DOES IT WITHOUT WARNING. ALL OF THESE ISSUES CAN BE ON A CURVE AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS OR ON A SLIGHT OR MEDIUM TURNS (NOT REAL SHARP TURNS), GOING UPHILL OR DOWNHILL AND LEFT OR RIGHT. OUR VAN HAS ABOUT 150,000 MILES ON IT NOW ON 2020 BUT WHEN THE PROBLEM FIRST STARTED IT ONLY HAD AROUND 110,000 MILES ON IT. WE HAVE CHANGED BRAKES, TIRES, ROTORS, BRUSHING ON ADVICE FROM DIFFERENT MECHANICS TO TRY TO FIX THE ISSUE. NOTHING WORKS. TOYOTA CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT. IT'S BECOMING MORE DANGEROUS BECAUSE NOW THE ABS IS BEING ACTIVATED WITH THIS PROBLEM. I CAN'T TELL IF MY BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON SO THAT DRIVERS BEHIND ME CAN TELL THAT I?M SLOWING DOWN VERY QUICKLY. THE TRACTION CONTROL, STABILITY, AND ABS ENGAGE IN TURNS (STEERING INPUT) RANGING FROM SPEEDS OF 25-55 MPH. IT HAPPENS ON FLAT SURFACES, INCLINES AND DECLINES. THE TURN RANGE FROM SHARP TURNS TO SLIGHT TURNS THAT THERE IS NO REDUCTION OF SPEED TO NAVIGATE THE TURN. WHEN IT OCCURS THE VEHICLE RAPIDLY DECELERATES AND PULLS TO THE RIGHT. WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE IN A TURN THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ACCELERATE UNTIL THERE IS NO STEERING INPUT. DEALERS AND MECHANICS CAN NOT DETERMINE THE CAUSE. IT HAS BEEN OCCURRING DAILY FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS. THIS HAS CAUSED MANY NEAR CRASHES.

ADDITIONALLY, WHEN THE BRAKES APPLY, IT PULLS YOU OUT OF YOUR LANE. THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS 3 WEEKS AGO. HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE. IT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE INTERMITTENT ANYMORE. YOU CAN COUNT ON IT HAPPENING WHEN YOUR ON A SLOPE.

WHILE DRIVING THE VSC/ABS SYSTEM COMES ON UNEXPECTEDLY CAUSING VEHICLE TO BRAKE AND EFFECT STEERING. IT IS MOST FREQUENTLY NOTICED WHEN STEERING ON CURVES 30-40 MPH. I HAVE REPLACED TIRES, FRONT STEERING COMPONENTS AND DEALER CANNOT DUPLICATE. I BELIEVE WHEEL SPEED/YAW SENSOR CALIBRATION IS AFFECTING THE VSC SYSTEM. THIS IS A VERY SCARY SITUATION TO BE IN THAT COULD LEAD TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. YOUR BRAKING AND STEERING AFFECTED ALL AT ONCE UNEXPECTEDLY IS DANGEROUS. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND PROVIDE SOLUTION ASAP.

THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO FOX TOYOTA (228 FOX FAMILY LN, CLINTON, TN 37716) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT A STEERING ANGLE SENSOR NEEDED TO BE INSTALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND PROVIDED A CASE NUMBER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 170,000. *BF *TR

REPAIR COST IS ESTIMATED AT APPROXIMATELY $2,000. NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ARE POSTED BY OTHER OWNERS ON THE INTERNET ALL POINTING TO THE SAME DEFECT. IF DRIVERS ARE UNAWARE, OR IF THE DEFECT IS NOT RESOLVED, POWER STEERING COULD FREEZE AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS. DETROIT AXLE, IN MICHIGAN, IS SELLING DEFECTIVE STRUTS, STRAIGHT OUT OF THE JUNKYARD, AND RACK AND PINION STEERING AND MANY OTHER SUSPENSION PARTS, ADVERTISED AS NEW, BY JUST PLACING A COAT OF PAINT IN THEM. THEY OFFER A WARRANTY OF ONE YEAR IN THE PRODUCTS, BUT THE CONSUMER MUST PAY FOR THE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF THE PART. I PLAYED THEIR GAME FOR THREE TIMES AND I FOOLISHLY PAID 3 TIMES FOR THE STRUT INSTALLATION, PLUS OTHER DAMAGES THE FAULTY STRUTS CAUSED ME . THE FAULTY STRUTS CAUSED MY FRAME TO LOOSEN, MY HORIZONTAL DRIVE SHAFT TO DAMAGE, AND RACK AND PINION STEERING, THAT DETROIT AXLE SOLD. WELL, MY VEHICLE SHAKES VIOLENTLY AT BETWEEN 45-55 MILES PER HOUR, THUS HAVING TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I MANAGED TO DRIVE TO A MECHANIC THROUGH BACK ROADS AT LOW SPEEDS. THE DEFECTIVE RACK AND PINION STEERING AND THE DEFECTIVE, SOLD AS NEW PARTS, AND ADVERTISED AS NEW PARTS FAILED IN THREE OCCASIONS ANE DAMAGING MY OTHER PARTS OF THE VEHICLE. IT COST ME OVER $3000 TO REPLACE THOSE PARTS PLUS THE MONEY THAT I GAVE TO DETROIT AXLE, WITH THE COLLUSION OF EBAY SELLING HIS PRODUCTS. ONCE THE PARTS ARE RECEIVED, WITHIN 60 DAYS, HE CLOSES THE FEEDBACK ON HIS PAGE, THUS NOT LETTING THE SUSPECTING PUBLIC COMPLAIN AGAINST HIS JUNKYARD OF DEFECTIVE PARTS. EBAY PROTECTS HIM. I STILL HAVE TO REPLACE MY MICHELIN NEW TIRES FOR MORE EXPENSE AND THE THIRD PAIR OF STRUTS ARE STILL ON THE VEHICLE, IN WHICH I STILL HAVE TO REPLACE FOR A THIRD TIME!

WHEY HAVEN'T THE GOVERNMENT FORCE TOYOTA TO RECALL THIS VEHICLES? I HAVE CHANGED STRUTS, SHOCKS, THE TIRES ARE NEW AND IT IS ALIGNED. TOYOTA IS RISKING THE LIVES OF ITS CLIENTS AND NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, DUE TO THE APATHY AND HUMAN DISREGARD OF LIVES.!
WHEN MY SIENNA WAS 3 1/2 YRS OLD WITH MILEAGE 51,500 IT NEEDED A NEW POWER RACK & PINION DUE TO STEERING FLUID LEAK. IT WAS REPLACED IN DECEMBER 2011 AT THE DEALERSHIP AND COST ME $1,200. NOW RECENT VISIT TO HAVE THE OIL CHANGED ON MARCH 25, 2016, THE TECH DISCOVERED AGAIN LEAKING STEERING FLUID AND ANOTHER NEW POWER RACK & PINION REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED. THIS TIME IT'S 4 & 1/2 YEARS LATER AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE OF THE VAN IS 109,600. LOOKS LIKE THERE IS SOME TYPE OF DEFECT WITH THE PARTS AND ONLY LAST APPROX. 50,000 MILES. I DO HEAR A PERSISTENT KNOCKING SOUND WHICH IS ONE OF THE SYMPTOMS OF RACK & PINION GOING BAD.
WE HAD BEEN NOTICING A SMALL LEAK UNDER OUR 2008 TOYOTA SIENNA FOR A FEW MONTHS SO WE TOOK IT IN TO THE TOYOTA SERVICE CENTER TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. A TOYOTA SERVICE TECHNICIAN TOLD US THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE POWER STEERING RACK BOOT IS TORN AND THE SEAL IS LEAKING, SO IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. HE SAID THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM/DEFECT WITH 2008 SIENNAS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE.

THE VAN ONLY HAS 57,000 + ON IT AND SERVICED REGULARLY. WITH THE HISTORY OF SEVERAL RECALL ON SIENNA, L BELIEVED THIS MIGHT BE A DEFECT FROM TOYOTA. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHICH THE DEALER REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE CAUSED THE VAN WARRANT HAS RAN OUT EVEN THOUGH L BOUGHT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY (COST GUARD) WHICH L WAS TOLD AGAIN THAT THE COST GUARD WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED TOO. IN MAY OF 2013, I WAS TOLD BY ROSNER TOYOTA OF STAFFORD VA, THAT MY VEHICLE, WITH LESS THAN 60,000 MILES ON IT, WOULD NOT PASS A SAFETY INSPECTION BECAUSE THE RACK AND PINION STEERING SYSTEM WAS LEAKING FLUID. NOT WANTING TO DRIVE AN UNSAFE VEHICLE, I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO FIX IT. I PETITIONED TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS ABOUT THIS, AND THEY AGREED TO COVER $900.00 OF THE $1,300.00 BILL. I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE COVERED THE ENTIRE AMOUNT, BUT I ENDED UP SHELLING OUT $300.00 FOR A NEW BOOT TO TEMP FIX THE PROBLEM, AND THEN THE REMAINING $400.00 TO REPLACE THE RACK AND PINION. NOW, LESS THAN 1 YEAR FROM THE REPLACEMENT OF THE RACK AND PINION, ROSNER OF TOYOTA TELLS ME THAT THE SAME SIDE OF THE RACK AND PINION IS AGAIN LEAKING FLUID AND THAT IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ROSNER REPLACED THE PARTS, BUT I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS IS JUST A TEMPORARY FIX TO A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM. THIS IS THE THIRD RACK AND PINION FOR THIS VEHICLE IN LESS THAN 6 YEARS. 2008 SIENNA HAS DEVELOPED STEERING ISSUE AND ALMOST LOST STEERING CONTROL OF VAN. PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE FAILURE OF STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT THAT RESULTED IN INTERMEDIATE ABILITY TO STEER VEHICLE. VERY CHOPPY STEERING. THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH TOYOTAS. CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS INFORMED THERE ARE TSB'S FOR PRIOR AND POST YEAR VEHICLES BUT NOT FOR 08 SIENNA. TOYOTA NEEDS TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE AS FAILURE OF STEERING COMPONENT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. TSB IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

THE ABS SYSTEM WOULD ENGAGE INDEPENDENTLY, THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS LEAKING INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BELT WOULD NOT WORK BECAUSE THE SEAT WAS ACTUALLY DESIGNED FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE, BUT WAS INSTALLED TO THE DRIVER'S SEAT . THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE RACK AND PINION WAS LEAKING GREASE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 2,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO INSTALLED A RUBBER LINING BUT THAT DID NOT RESOLVE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DOORS WERE NOT PROPERLY ALIGNED. THE THROTTLE CONTROL HAS ALSO MALFUNCTIONED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE ALSO BEGAN PULLING TO THE LEFT, BUT THAT HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER AT THIS TIME. I HAVE 2008 TOYOTA SIENNA LIMITED AWD. I HAVE ABOUT 16500 MILES. MY PROBLEM STARTED WHEN THE CAR HAD ABOUT 1000 MILES. ON PARKING WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT, SHORTLY AFTER I STARTED TURNING THE WHEEL I COULD HEAR AND FEEL (ON THE WHEEL) A CONSTANT CLICKING NOISE. THIS NOISE SHOWS UP ONLY WHEN YOU TURN TO THE RIGHT. IT DOES NOT SHOW WHEN YOU TURN TO THE LEFT. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO TOYOTA OF ALEXANDRIA, VA. THE CAR SPEND DAYS THERE AND THEY SAID THAT THEY DON'T HAVE CLUE WHAT IS THE PROBLEM! THEY OPENED A CASE WITH TOYOTA AND I HAD A MEETING WITH A TOYOTA FIELD SPECIALIST. I HAD MULTIPLE QUESTIONS - WHY THE PROBLEM DETERIORATED, WHY IT SHOWS UP ONLY WHEN YOU TURN TO THE RIGHT AND NOT TO THE LEFT, ETC. MY QUESTIONS WERE UNANSWERED. THIS PERSON WAS NOT TRYING TO FIX MY PROBLEM. HE REPEATED WORD BY WORD DEALERSHIP FOREMAN'S WORDS. I THOUGHT THEY HAD A PREDEFINED SCRIPT. I BROUGHT IT TO OURISMAN CHANTILLY TOYOTA, VA. THEY REPLACED CV HALF SHAFT ASSEMBLY. THAT DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED SOP-SHAFT AND THAT DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. I PICKED UP MY CAR AND I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM IS AIRBAG CLOCK SPRING. I WAS TOLD REPLACING THE CLOCK SPRING WOULD NOT FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE ALL OF THEM WILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT IT'S A COMMON ISSUE ON ALL TOYOTA SIENNA AWD VANS. AGAIN IN THE PARKING START TURNING TO THE RIGHT, BEFORE THE WHEEL LOCKS I CAN FEEL AND HEAR CLICKING NOISE. I BROUGHT IT TO FITZGERLAD TOYOTA, GAITHERSBURG, MD. REPLACED THE LOWER STEERING SHAFT AND PUT A SPECIAL GREASE. THE NOISE WENT AWAY FOR ABOUT 1500 MILES, BUT SLOWLY STARTED COMING BACK. IT IS GETTING FRUSTRATING AND IS GETTING LOUDER AS I PUT MORE MILES. AS PER THE DEALER, THE KEY IS A SPECIAL GREASE AND IT IS A SPECIAL ORDER. I WAS ON THE BACK ORDER LIST AND WAS #78 FOR THE REGION. IT SEEMS THAT THERE IS A LOT OF DEMAND FOR THIS AND TOYOTA KNOWS THAT. MY CONCERN IS THAT NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND IF THAT PROBLEM PRESENTS A SAFETY ISSUE. THANKS A LOT! *TR

BELOW STEERING PROBLEMS PERSIST TO THE PRESENT, DESPITE NUMEROUS REPAIR ATTEMPTS BY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP EMPLOYEES AND TOYOTA ENGINEERS. THE APPROXIMATE DATE OF INCIDENT LISTED WITH THIS REPORT REPRESENTS THE DATE OF PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE / TIME FIRST OCCURRED. ALTHOUGH SEVERAL ISSUES ARE PRESENT, I DID TRY TO DESCRIBE THEM INTO 3 DISTINCT PROBLEMS. 2008 TOYOTA SIENNA LE AWD, BEARING STEERING ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE: 1. THE VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL PHYSICALLY TURNS TO THE RIGHT, WHILE BRAKING. 2. STEERING WHEEL FAILS TO CENTER PROPERLY AT ALL TIMES. 3. STEERING WHEEL HAS TO BE HELD TO LEFT TO KEEP TRACKING STRAIGHT. THE VEHICLE STEERING WHEEL PHYSICALLY TURNS TO THE RIGHT, WHILE BRAKING. THE GREATEST EFFECT / TURNING IS OBSERVED AS THE VEHICLE'S SPEED DECREASES. THE GREATEST EFFECT / TURNING IS ALSO OBSERVED AS THE VEHICLE'S SPEED DECREASES AND THE VEHICLE IS TRAVERSING DOWN A STEEP GRADIENT. THIS OCCURS IF I DRIVE IN THE CENTER OF THE ROAD, WITH THE CENTER OF THE ROAD CROWN, CENTERED ON THE VEHICLE AND ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD, WHERE A VEHICLE MUST LAWFULLY TRAVEL. CONVERSELY, IF I DRIVE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD / OR THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD CROWN, THE VEHICLE DOES NOT ADVERSELY PULL TO THE LEFT. IT WAS NOTED BY THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT THIS IS DUE TO ROAD CROWN. THIS ISSUE PROVIDES A FALSE SENSE OF STEERING, ESPECIALLY IN THE SNOW, AS IT IS SOMETIMES BELIEVED THAT THE ROAD CONDITIONS ARE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO TRACK RIGHT, AND OVERCOMPENSATION IS USUALLY APPLIED. VEHICLE PULLS OR DRIFTS TO THE RIGHT WHILE DRIVING. ONCE THE VEHICLE STARTS PULLING / DRIFTING, IT CONTINUES ABRUPTLY. DRIVING ON LONGER TRIPS 2-3 HOURS DOES CAUSE ARM STRAIN, FROM CONSTANT CORRECTING OF THE STEERING WHEEL ATTEMPTING TO CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO TRACK STRAIGHT. I DID FILE A LEMON LAW CLAIM AGAINST TOYOTA REGARDING THESE DEFECTS, AND RECEIVED COMPENSATION. THEREAFTER I DID NOT TAKE TO DEALERSHIP, AS TOYOTA SIMPLY CANNOT REPAIR THE ISSUES. *TR
