Vehicle: 2011 Toyota Sienna XLE VIN: [XXX] Mileage: ~204,800 Incident Date: [XXX] Recent Service: Oil change, tire rotation, brake inspection, and multipoint inspection performed on November 10, 2025 at Fitzgerald Toyota Gaithersburg (Maryland). Description of the Defect: On [XXX] while driving with my child in the vehicle, my 2011 Toyota Sienna experienced a sudden and dangerous failure. A strong burning smell entered the cabin, the ABS warning light illuminated, and then wheels locked up while the vehicle was in motion. At the same time, the steering wheel locked, making the vehicle impossible to steer. The engine immediately lost power and shut down in the middle of the roadway. The vehicle would not restart and had to be towed. This failure occurred four days after dealership service at Fitzgerald Toyota Gaithersburg, which included an oil change, tire rotation, and brake inspection. The dealership initially claimed the failure was due to a “dead battery,” and the following day changed the explanation to a “shorted alternator.” A weak battery or alternator failure does not explain a mechanical wheel lock or steering wheel lock while driving. The dealership has refused to provide diagnostic documentation or photographs of the components involved. This incident presents a significant safety hazard, and if it had occurred at highway speeds, it could have resulted in a severe crash. I am reporting this to request investigation into a potential safety defect involving the steering system, braking/ABS system, electrical system, or related components. Safety Risk: High. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME THAT THE THERE IS AN EXCESSIVE WEAR ON THE INNER SIDE OF THE REAR DRIVER SIDE OF THE WHEEL..I REGULARLY HAVE TIRE BALANCE AND WHEEL ALIGNMENT BUT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR MANY THOUSAND MILES ON MY CAR..
THE VAN HAS EXTREME OUTER TIRE WEAR ON THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT SEEMS TO BE TO WORST. TIRES ARE BEING ROTATED AT RECOMMENDED INTERVALS (5000-6000MI) AND AN ALIGNMENT CHECK AND ADJUSTMENT IS DONE AT THE SAME TIME. 60,000MI RATED TIRES ARE LASTING 10,000-15,000MI BEFORE REQUIRING REPLACEMENT AND CAUSING VERY POOR TURNING/STEERING, EXCESSIVE STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION AND PULL, AND DRAMATICALLY INCREASED HYDROPLANING IN MILD RAIN CONDITIONS.

THE TIRES HAD TO BE REPLACED AT ABOUT 18,000 MILES DUE TO EXCESSIVE WEAR ON THE OUTSIDE TREAD OF THE TIRES. LESS THAN A YEAR PIRELLI SCORPION VERDE ALL SEASON PLUS 235/50/R19 TIRES FRONT TIRES SUDDENLY LOSES AIR IN THE FREEWAY. IT HAPPEN IN TWO OCCASIONS, FIRST ON THE LEFT AND THEN RIGHT SIDE AFTER ONE WEEK OF DRIVING. THE FIRST INCIDENT HAPPEN JULY 15, 2017 CAUSING A REPLACEMENT OF THE TIRE. THE SECOND JULY 30,2017 STILL WAITING FROM PIRELLI IF THAT BATCH OF TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE.

WE PURCHASED OUR SIENNA FEB 2015 FROM A DEALER. IN MAY 2016 WE WERE INFORMED OUR TIRES HAD WORN ON THE INSIDE AND THEY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND AN ALIGNMENT NEEDED TO BE DONE. WE DID BOTH AS RECOMMENDED. IN SEPTEMBER 2016 WE WERE TOLD THAT OUR TIRES WERE FEATHERING DUE TO AN ALIGNMENT ISSUE, SO AGAIN THE VAN AS ALIGNED. THE TIRES ARE BALANCED AND ROTATED PER THE RECOMMENDED TIME FRAME. I TOOK MY VAN IN JUNE 2017 TO THE DEALER TO HAVE AN OIL CHANGE DONE AND WAS INFORMED THAT I WILL NEED NEW TIRES SOON. THESE ARE MICHELIN TIRES WHICH ARE 60,000 TIRES. THEY CURRENTLY HAVE 25,859 MILES ON THEM. THE TIRES MEASURED 4/32, 5/32, 5/32, AND 5/32. I HAVE HAD ANOTHER ALIGNMENT DONE IN JUNE. WE ARE NOW LOOKING INTO ANOTHER SET OF TIRES SINCE WE WILL BE MOVING NEXT YEAR AND HAVE LITTLE ONES IN THE CAR TO KEEP SAFE. I HAVE READ SO MANY FORUMS THAT STATE THE EXACT SAME ISSUE WE ARE HAVING. THAT THE TOYOTA SIENNA EATS THROUGH TIRES. I WAS VERY UNHAPPY WITH THE DEALER SHIP WHEN I QUESTIONED THEM WHY THIS IS HAPPENING. I WAS BASICALLY TOLD I HIT POT HOLES AND HAVE THROWN THE ALIGNMENT OUT OF WHACK AND IS CAUSING THE ISSUES. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO FIX THIS! HAVING TO PURCHASE NEW TIRES WHEN THEY HAVEN'T EVEN GONE THROUGH HALF THE MILES THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

I RECEIVED TWO LETTERS IN THE MAIL FOR SAFETY RECALLS ON MY TAKATA FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG INFLATOR (ZONE A) AS WELL AS EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE SPARE TIRE CARRIER CABLE. I TRIED CONTACTING TWO DEALERSHIPS NEAR ME, AND THEY DID NOT TRY TO MEET BASIC SAFETY STANDARDS. THE DEALERSHIPS TOLD ME THAT I MUST WAIT SEVERAL MONTHS TO SOLVE MY ISSUES OR THAT THEY WOULD CALL ME BACK SOON (AND OF COURSE, THEY DIDN'T). THE NEAREST ONE TO ME, BREDEMANN DEALERSHIP @ (847) 655-1435, TOLD ME THAT I MUST WAIT THREE MONTHS FOR SUPPLIES TO COME IN. MY LIFE AND SAFETY ARE ON THE LINE, AND I DO NOT WANT TO PUT MYSELF IN DANGER BECAUSE OF A DEALERSHIP'S LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE AND MEETING BASIC SAFETY STANDARDS.

TOYOTA HAS HAD MY MINIVAN ON THEIR LOT SINCE OCTOBER OF 2016. THEY ARE UNABLE TO PROVIDE A FIX FOR THESE RECALLS. THEY PUT ME IN A RENTAL VAN, BUT IT IS NOT COMPARABLE TO MY VAN AND THEY HAVE FORCED ME TO CHANGE MY RENTAL CAR 4 TIMES.
APPARENTLY, THERE HAS BEEN TWO RECALLS INVOLVING THE TOYOTA SIENNA 2011. HOWEVER, THE SYSTEM SHOW THAT THE RECALL IS STILL INCOMPLETE, OR, OTHERWISE, NOT AVAILABLE TO OFFER A REMEDY OR REPAIRS. WHEEL BOLTS BREAKING WHEN TIGHTENING BY HAND. MINIVAN HAS ONLY ABOUT 30,000 MILES, DRIVEN MOSTLY IN THE CITY IN CALIFORNIA. WHEEL BOLT BROKE WHEN PUTTING WHEEL BACK AFTER CLEANING BRAKES. TIGHTENING WAS DONE BY HAND USING STANDARD WHEEL WRENCH.

SINCE MAY 2014 I HAVE RECEIVED A NOTICE ON RECALL ABOUT MY SIENNA 2011 VIN 5TDKK3DC5BS[XXX] FOR THE SPARE WHEEL E1S, NHTSA REF ID 14V273 AND SINCE THAT TIME WE HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM TOYOTA AS OWNERS FOR THE REMEDIATION OF THIS SAFETY RECALL ( THIS APPLIES TO CANADIAN VEHICLES AS WELL). ALL WHAT THEY SAY IS TO PUT THE SPARE WHEEL IN THE TRUNK AS A TEMPORARY SOLUTION FOR NOW, AND THIS ALSO IS NOT A SAFE SOLUTION CONSIDERING THIS WHEEL AMONG PASSENGERS AND WHAT IT COULD DO IN CASE OF IMPACT. I TOOK MY 2011 TOYOTA SIENNA TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE SERVICED. I WAS TOLD THE SPARE TIRE CABLE IS DEFECTIVE (NHTSA #14V273000) AND THE SPARE TIRE WAS PLACED IN MY TRUNK. I WAS TOLD THERE IS NO FIX TO THIS SITUATION. THIS RECALL WAS ISSUED IN MAY OF 2014 AND I FEEL 10 MONTHS IS MORE THAN ENOUGH TIME TO HAVE DEVELOPED A FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM. TMS-NTC-13142 I HAVE A 2011 TOYOTA SIENNA SE WITH 19" RIMS AND TIRES WHICH FAILED TO MEET THE NHTSA TEST FOR TIRE LOADING AND AS A RESULT TOYOTA SENT OUT A RECALL NOTICE TO REPLACE THE TIRES WITH EXTRA LOAD TIRES. HOWEVER, THEY ARE NOT HONORING THEIR REQUIREMENT BECAUSE THEY ARE REQUIRING THE TOW HITCH BE A OEM PRODUCT WHICH DOES NOT EXIST. THEY SOLD THESE VANS WITH A TOW PACKAGE BUT NOT WITH A TOW HITCH. TOYOTA DOES NOT SELL OEM TOW HITCHES INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH. AS A RESULT, CUSTOMERS HAVE HAD TO PURCHASE A AFTER MARKET TOW HITCH. NOW THAT THE WEIGHT OF THE VEHICLE EXCEEDS THE TIRE RATINGS AND THEY ARE REQUIRED TO REPLACE THE WHEELS, TOYOTA IS REQUIRING THEIR DEALERSHIPS TO ONLY REPLACE WHEELS IF THE VAN IS EQUIPPED WITH AN OEM TOW HITCH WHICH AGAIN DOES NOT EXIST. BOUGHT OUR 2011 SIENNA NEW OFF THE LOT BACK IN 2011 AND WE ARE NOW ON OUR 2ND SET OF NEW TIRES (3RD IN SOME CASES THAT 2 NEEDED REPLACING). A TOTAL OF 6 NEW TIRES WITH A VEHICLE THAT HAS ONLY 30,000 MILES ON IT IS RIDICULOUS. I HAVE CALLED TOYOTA ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND NOW OUR VAN SITS IN OUR DRIVEWAY LIKE A DEAD WEIGHT. WE HAD A TIRE BLOW OUT ON US ALREADY A FEW MONTHS AGO IN WHICH WE HAD TO REPLACE IT. THEY GO BALD VERY FAST AND ARE NO GOOD IN BAD WEATHER. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE IN WHICH I HAD TO REPLACE TIRES THIS OFTEN. IT ALMOST CAUSED US A WRECK WHEN THE TIRE BLEW OUT AND WE CANT KEEP UP WITH THE COSTS OF REPLACING THEM SINCE THEY ARE SO EXPENSIVE. *TR
THIS IS FOR A SIENNA 2011 WITH AWD THAT I PURCHASED NEW IN OCT 2010. AT APPROXIMATELY 27,000 MILES, TOYOTA DEALER RECOMMENDS REPLACEMENT OF RUN FLAT TIRES WITH BRIDGESTONE TURANZA RUN FLATS. AT 45,000 MILES, SAME DEALER RECOMMENDS REPLACEMENT OF TIRES AGAIN. THEY NOW RECOMMEND A NON RUN FLAT TIRE. THIS WILL BE THIRD SET OF TIRES FOR THIS VEHICLE THAT IS 3 YRS OLD AND HAS BEEN SERVICED BY TOYOTA EVERY 5,000 MILES. THERE APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH EXCESSIVE WEAR OF RUN FLAT TIRES ON THIS VEHICLE. TOYOTA SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS ISSUE AND REPLACE THESE TIRES. *TR

MY SIENNA FALLS UNDER THE CURRENT RECALL FOR UNSAFE TIRES FOR SIENNAS USED FOR TOWING, BUT THE DEALER REFUSES TO PROVIDE THE EXTRA LOAD TIRES BECAUSE MY HITCH WAS INSTALLED AFTERMARKET. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE WITH THE TOWING PACKAGE, HOWEVER I WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER TO GET THE HITCH INSTALLED ELSEWHERE TO SAVE TIME AND MONEY. REGARDLESS OF THAT FACT, I FAIL TO SEE HOW WHERE THE HITCH WAS INSTALLED MAKES THE TIRES SAFE VS. UNSAFE. TOYOTA IS CLEARLY HIDING BEHIND AN ARBITRARY POLICY. I USE THE VEHICLE FOR TOWING. ONE TIRE IS BEGINNING TO SHOW SIGNS OF EARLY FAILURE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO PROVIDE THE EXTRA LOAD TIRES ASAP. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. TOYOTA NEEDS TO COMPLY WITH THE RECALL. *TR

COMING AROUND A TURN AT 10 MPH, THE PASSENGER REAR TIRE BLEW OUT, WITH A TOTAL LOSS OF PRESSURE AND A WHOOSH OF AIR. THE TIRES WERE PROPERLY INFLATED AT THE TIME. THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT WAS NOT LIT. THE TIRES HAVE ONLY 23,547 MILES ON THEM. I DO NOT FEEL A TIRE THAT IS 2 YEARS OLD WITH THIS NUMBER OF MILES SHOULD SUFFER A COMPLETE FAILURE. NHTSA CAMPAIGN 11V560000.............MY VEHICLE HAS A TOW HITCH AND SO THE SAFETY RECALL INFORMATION PROVIDED BY SAYS TO NOT PLACE THE NEW TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION PLACARD ON THE VEHICLE. THE INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED BY TOYOTA FURTHER STATE THAT: "THE REMEDY FOR YOUR VEHICLE WILL BE AVAILABLE AFTER MAY 2012. WE WILL SEND YOU ANOTHER NOTICE WHEN IT IS READY." I CALLED TOYOTA IN JUNE OF 2012 AND WAS TOLD THAT THE REMEDY WAS NOT YET READY AND I WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN IT WAS. I WAS PROVIDED THIS INFORMATION BY AN INDIVIDUAL NAMED [XXX] AT 800-331-4331 EXT [XXX] AND WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER [XXX]. THIS WAS OVER A YEAR AGO AND STILL NOT RESPONSE OR ACTION BY TOYOTA. IT FEESL LIKE THEY HAVE NO INTENTION OF RESOLVING THIS ISSUE FOR ME. HOW LONG IS REASONABLE TO WAIT FOR A FIX WITH A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH POTENTIAL OVERLOADING OF THE TIRE/WHEEL? WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE IN FEBRUARY 2011. IT CAME WITH FREE TOYOTA MAINTENANCE FOR THE FIRST 2 YEARS AND HAS BEEN BROUGHT IN FOR EVERY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE, MOST RECENTLY THE 25,000 MILE SERVICE AT 26,000, SO THE TIRES HAVE REGULARLY BEEN ROTATED AND INSPECTED BY THE DEALERSHIP. TWO YEARS AND LESS THAN 27,000 MILES AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE, I NOTICED THAT IT WAS NOT HANDLING WELL IN SNOW DESPITE BEING AN AWD. TO OUR SURPRISE, THE TIRES WERE WORN. I BROUGHT IT TO A TIRE SHOP HOPING FOR JUST AN ALIGNMENT AND WERE TOLD THE TIRES WERE NOT SAFE TO DRIVE ON. THEREFORE, I JUST HAD TO REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES AHEAD OF SCHEDULE. VERY DANGEROUS AS MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN CONSIDER THE NEED FOR NEW TIRES AT THIS POINT IN THEIR VEHICLE OWNERSHIP. AND EVEN MORE DANGEROUS AS COMING UP WITH THE $1,000 EVERY TWO YEARS IS/WILL BE DIFFICULT IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE. TOLD DURING MY SERVICE AT 15000K BY TOYOTA TECHNICIAN THAT I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE ALL 4 TIRES ON MY 2011 TOYOTA SIENNA. I ASKED HOW WAS IT POSSIBLE A BRAND NEW LEASED VEHICLE WITH 15000K MILES WOULD NEED NEW TIRES AND I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD MAKE IT TO 20000K BUT NEED NEW ONES. THE TECHNICIAN COULD NOT TELL ME WHY THE TIRES WERE FAILING. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE AND SPEAKING WITH OTHER TOYOTA SIENNA OWNERS IT APPEARS TO BE A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE TIRES PLACED ON SIENNA MINIVANS. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT TOYOTA IS BLAMING THE TIRE COMPANY AND THE TIRE COMPANY IS BLAMING TOYOTA. OF COURSE THE POOR CONSUMER GETS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE. A RECALL SHOULD BE DONE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS TIRE SAFETY IS VERY IMPORTANT. *TR
