ODI #11516361 I bought this 2009 Toyota Tacoma with 20,990 miles on it on 11/22/2019. Then the pandemic hit the USA and the truck sat for many months. Then in April 2023 I brought the truck in for repairs and the mechanic told me the frame was rusted real bad and that the recall was past the deadline. I brought it to Toyota of Watertown Dealership on 4/07/2023 with 33,348 miles on it and they said there was nothing they could do because the truck was over the 12 years of manufacturing recall date. My truck was manufactured on 8/20/2009, so my recall ended on 8/20/2021. I owned the truck for 19 months during the recall and I never received a recall notice from Toyota. If I had known I would have had it inspected before the 12 years were up and Toyota would have been responsible for the rusted out frame. Toyota is negligent and liable for not informing me of the recall. Now I am stuck with a rusted out dangerous vehicle.
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Tacoma. The contact stated that while pulling into the driveway, the transmission suddenly disengaged causing the vehicle to stall. The contact turned off the vehicle and noticed that transmission fluid was leaking underneath the vehicle. The contact had the vehicle towed to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission line had rusted through causing the transmission failure. The transmission line was replaced; however, the forward gears remained inoperable. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall for the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

ON ANOTHER OCCASION, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE SHIFTED FROM REGULAR GEAR INTO FOUR WHEEL DRIVE ON ITS OWN. ALSO, THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO JOEL CONFER TOYOTA (814-237-5713, LOCATED AT 120 CLINTON AVE, STATE COLLEGE, PA 16803) WHERE THE TECHNICIAN ADDED TRANSMISSION FLUID AND REMOVED A METAL PIECE THAT BROKE OFF THE FUEL TANK COVER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. AND CONTACT WAS TOLD UNINTENDED ACCERLATION TEMPLATE WAS THE PROBLEM, HAPPEN FOR 4 DAYS. THE CONTACT DID NOT BELIEVE THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. DRIVESHAFT AND UNIVERSAL JOINT PROBLEM. TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A "WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT - ZH2" FOR THIS PROBLEM, BUT IT SHOULD BE A FULL RECALL, AS THE CONDITION CAN LEAD TO SUDDEN DRIVESHAFT FAILURE, LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL, AND DEATH. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO ALSO EXTEND TO THE CENTER BEARING AND POSSIBLY THE DRIVESHAFT ITSELF, AS I TOOK MY TRUCK IN FOR SERVICE UNDER WARRANTY, AND STILL HAVE VIBRATION ISSUES EVEN AFTER THE WARRANTIED PARTS (AND CENTER SUPPORT BEARING AT SIGNIFICANT EXTRA COST) WERE REPLACED. THIS VIBRATION BEGINS AROUND 40 MPH AND INCREASES THROUGH 60 MPH. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND MAY SUSTAIN A SUDDEN DRIVESHAFT FAILURE FROM IMPROPER REMEDIATION OF THIS ISSUE UNDER THE ZH2 CAMPAIGN.

PURCHASED NEW TOYOTA TACOMA TRD SPORT IN AUG 2009 WITH ZERO MILES. ALL SEEMED OK, OTHER THAN A FEW FRUSTRATING CAB RATTLES HERE AND THERE. HOWEVER, I ALSO NOTICED THAT AS MY TRUCK NEARED MORE MILES (7,000 CURRENT), I NOW HAVE TO PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL A BIT HARDER, YET WHEN I BROUGHT THIS UP TO THE DEALER, THEY STATED ALL WAS NORMAL AND COULD NOT REPLICATE. I'VE HAD A COUPLE OF INSTANCES WHERE I'VE HAD TO PRESS THE BRAKE PRETTY HARD TO COME TO A STOP OR SLOW DOWN. IT SEEMS I NEED TO RIDE IT A LITTLE HARDER THAN WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT MY TRUCK. I ALSO WANT TO ADD, THAT BESIDES THE IRRITATING RATTLES (DOOR PANELS/TRAY HOLDER IN CENTER CONSOLE BELOW THE STEERING WHEEL - WHICH WAS REPLACED, BUT STILL MAKE POP SOUNDS HERE AND THERE, THE OTHER SMALLER RATTLES - SOME OF WHICH WERE COMING FROM ILL-FIT WINDOW SEALS WERE NOT REALLY FIXED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE SEALS AND THE POPPING SOUNDS STOPPED FOR A DAY OR SO THEN RETURNED. I FOUND THE PROBLEM IS THE SEALS TEND TO BE SOMEWHAT IMPROPER FIT. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY ARE TOO LARGE AND CAUSE THE RUBBING. I PERSONALLY CORRECTED THIS BY REMOVING ALL DOOR PANELS ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT SOME OF THE RATTLE SOUNDS I HAD COMPLAINED ABOUT MERELY HAD A SMALL PIECE OF FELT ON THE BACKSIDE, WHICH DID NOT COMPLETELY CURE THE PROBLEM. I PURCHASED AN ENTIRE ROLL OF THIS MATERIAL MYSELF AND COATED THE INSIDE OF EACH DOOR PANEL THEN ADDED A SMALL PIECE OF WEATHER STRIPPING TO THE INSIDE OF DOOR PANEL EDGE WHERE IT TOUCHES THE GLASS WINDOW. THIS HELPED CONSIDERABLY IN REDUCING AIR NOISE AND NO MORE RATTLING. MY COMPLAINT IS STILL WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL SOMETIMES, NOT ALWAYS, NEEDING TO BE PUSHED HARDER THAN NORMAL TO COME TO STOP OR SLOW DOWN. ON OTHER THING I ADDRESSED WITH THE DEALER WAS THE FACT THAT WHEN I SLOW DOWN AND MAKE TURN, NOT COMPLETE STOP AND GO, MY ENGINE RPM'S DON'T DECELERATE QUICKLY ENOUGH FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO CATCH UP. THE ENGINES HAVE SUDDEN RPM INCREASES THAT ARE SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO PROPEL THE VEHICLES FORWARD. THIS USUALLY OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED AND THE TRANSMISSION IS IN THE DRIVE POSITION , AT A RED LIGHT FOR INSTANCE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, LITHIA TOYOTA IN KLAMATH FALLS OR, AND WAS TOLD "THE COMPUTER NEEDS TO ADJUST TO YOUR DRIVING STYLE", BUT IT STILL HASN'T HAPPENED. FROM A COMPLETE STOP I TURNED RIGHT AND ACCELERATED. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED TO SHIFT CAUSING THE TRUCK TO NEARLY STOP. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT PAUSE, THE TRANSMISSION FOUND A GEAR AND THE TRUCK ACCELERATED FORWARD. MY BRAKES STOPPED THE TRUCK AND I DROVE IT TO MY DEALER. THIS HAS ONLY HAPPENED ONCE SO FAR. I ATTEMPTED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE WITH SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES LOCALLY WHO TOLD ME THE TRANSMISSION WAS OPERATING NORMALLY. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA, WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER AND WAS TOLD BY THEIR COMPLAINT CENTER THAT IT WAS TOYOTA'S POSITION THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS OPERATING NORMALLY. I FEEL THAT THIS TENDENCY, WHICH HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED BY NUMEROUS OTHER OWNERS AT ONLINE SITES SUCH AS EDMUNDS.COM, IS A SAFETY HAZARD THAT SHOULD BE REMEDIED IN A RECALL. THIS SITUATION OCCURS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AND REQUIRES VERY CAREFUL CONCENTRATION TO AVOID A SUDDEN AND POTENTIALLY UNSAFE SURGE IN SPEED. I WAS ON A LONG STRAIGHT STRETCH OF INTERSTATE THE SECOND TIME SO I ALLOWED THE TRUCK TO ACCELERATE TO APPROXIMATELY 95 MPH AT WHICH TIME I STOPPED THE TRUCK AGAIN. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED, I HAD DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL DUE TO A SLOWER CAR IN FRONT OF ME AND WHEN I ENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL RESUME FEATURE THE TRUCK ACCELERATED 15 MPH PAST THE PRESET SPEED AT WHICH TIME I TURNED OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL AND REGAINED CONTROL OF THE TRUCK. THE SECOND TIME THAT IT HAPPENED THE TRUCK WAS AGAIN IN CRUISE CONTROL MODE AND WAS GOING UP A LONG HILL. WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL SHIFTED THE TRANSMISSION DOWN AND ACCELERATED TO MAINTAIN SET SPEED THE TRUCK CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE PAST 95 MPH AND WAS ONLY STOPPED BY TURNING OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL AGAIN. I ALLOWED THE TRUCK TO GET TO THAT SPEED TO SEE IF IT WOULD DISCONTINUE ACCELERATING BUT CHICKENED OUT AT 95 MPH BECAUSE IT IS AFTER ALL A TRUCK. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE SELLING DEALER, HE TRIED TO MAKE IT HAPPEN AGAIN WITH NO SUCCESS (TOLD ME HE WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE CRUISE CONTROL UNIT BUT COULD NOT DO THAT UNLESS HE COULD DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT IS A VERY EXPENSIVE CHANGE OUT) AND IT HAS NOT HAPPENED BUT ONE MORE TIME. 4 THINGS SEEM TO BE COMMON: 1. THE CRUISE IS TURNED ON. 2. THE VEHICLE IS ACCELERATING WHEN THE PROBLEM STARTS. 3. THE TRANSMISSION HAS AUTOMATICALLY DOWNSHIFTED. 4. THE PROBLEM IS HALTED BY TURNING OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL. WHEN I AM DRIVING AT APPROX 18KM/H AND PRESS THE ACCELERATOR (TO ACCELERATE OR CONTINUE SAME SPEED) THE TRUCK USUALLY DROPS INTO 1ST GEAR AND STAYS THERE FOR A FEW SECONDS BEFORE GOING BACK INTO SECOND GEAR. THIS CAUSES A "LURCHING" AS IT SHOULD NOT BE JUMPING TO 1ST. IT IS VERY NOTICEABLE AND I HAVE DRIVEN MANY, MANY AUTOMATICS, INCLUDING TOYOTAS, AND THEY DO NOT DO THIS. I HAD A 2001 TACOMA BEFORE PURCHASING THIS NEW ONE AND IT DID NOT DO THIS. ALSO, WHEN YOU SHIFT THE TRUCK FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE, AND IMMEDIATELY PRESS THE GAS, IT IS ALMOST LIKE THE TRUCK HESITATES, THEN LURCHES FORWARD VIOLENTLY. SOMETIMES CAUSING WHEELSPIN. HISTORICALLY, TOYOTA HAS HAD MANY ISSUES WITH CORROSION AND THE IMMEDIATE REFUSAL FOR COVERAGE SHOCKED ME. AFTER REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO GET TOYOTA CORPORATE TO REVIEW MY CASE, THEY CLAIMED THAT THEY CAME TO SEE THE TRUCK, AND DENIED COVERAGE. WHEN SLOWING DOWN TO TURN ONTO ANOTHER STREET, ONCE I TURN AND PRESS THE GAS PEDAL TO ACCELERATE, THE ENGINE REVS AND THE TRANSMISSION TAKES ABOUT 2-3 SECONDS TO SHIFT GEARS. HAPPENS 5-6 TIMES A WEEK, WHETHER ENGINE IS COLD OR HOT. SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD, AS THIS HAS HAPPENED WHEN MAKING A U-TURN IN TRAFFIC WITH CARS APPROACHING. TWO DIFFERENT TOYOTA MECHANICS TOLD ME THE TRANNY IS COMPUTER OPERATED AND NEEDS TO LEARN MY DRIVING HABITS. TOLD ME IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST 5,000 MILES FOR THE COMPUTER TO LEARN MY DRIVING HABITS AND FOR TRANSMISSION TO ADJUST. I HAVE OVER 3700 MILES NOW AND TRANNY STILL SEEMS WEIRD. STILL SLIPPING WHEN SLOWING DOWN AND THEN ACCELERATING ONTO ANOTHER STREET. ALSO, TRUCK FEELS LIKE THE TRANSMISSION TIGHTENS UP WHEN SLOWING DOWN FROM 30MPH TO 20MPH (IT DOES NOT SEEM TO COAST FREELY, ALMOST LIKE THE BREAKS ARE BEING SLIGHTLY APPLIED). CAN FEEL THE DOWNSHIFTING, EVEN THOUGH IT IS AN AUTOMATIC. MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THE COMPUTER DRIVEN TRANNY SLOWS THE TRUCK DOWN UNDER 30 MPH AS THAT IS PART OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM. WHEN YOU TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF OF THE GAS, THE COMPUTER PREPARES TO BRAKE AND THUS THE TRANNY PREPARES FOR A STOP HE SAID. MECHANIC ALSO TOLD ME THE CAMRY'S HAD AN ISSUE WITH THEIR TRANSMISSIONS AND TOYOTA HAD TO REPROGRAM THE COMPUTERS. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP RAN A COMPUTER "COLD START" TEST AND SAID EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL. HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH NATIONAL TOYOTA HOTLINE. NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE. *TR

MY NEW 2009 DOUBLE CAB TRD 4X4 HAS DANGEROUS SHIFT PATTERNS. WHEN YOU SLOW DOWN TO GO THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AND BEGIN TO MAKE THE TURN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION JUMPS DOWN INTO 1ST GEAR AND RACES THE ENGINE MAKING IT HARD TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE PROPERLY. TOYOTA SENT ME TO THE DEALER THEY TESTED IT AND STATED, "NORMAL FOR THE MODEL" ON MY TICKET. THEY RESET THE "LEARN CODE" AND TOLD ME OFF THE RECORD THAT OTHER TOYOTA CARS HAD THIS PROBLEM IN THE PAST - TOYOTA FIXED IT WITH A NEW SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE RELEASE, BUT WE JUST DON'T HAVE A SOFTWARE FIX FOR THE 09 TACOMA". I SENT ANOTHER EMAIL TO TOYOTA LAST WEEK THEY OPENED A CASE - BUT HAVE NO SOLUTIONS. OTHER OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS AS WELL. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHILE ACCELERATING, THE VEHICLE ACTS AS IF IT IS STUCK IN NEUTRAL. AFTERWARDS, THE RPMS SLIGHTLY INCREASE ACCOMPANIED WITH SUDDEN SCREECHING NOISES. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE COMPUTER MODULE. SOON AFTER THE REPAIR, THE FAILURE RECURRED. HE IS IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT INSPECTED, AND IS CURRENTLY WAITING FOR A RESPONSE FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 400 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 700.
