The frame on my 2010 Toyota Tacoma has developed severe perforation and rust-through. There are large holes in the frame, and the exhaust hanger has broken completely off the frame rail. The corrosion is spreading across multiple points, making the vehicle unsafe and at risk of structural failure while driving. I purchased the truck in May 2020 and brought it to a Toyota dealer for a paid multi-point inspection that included the undercarriage. At that time, Toyota’s ZH6 frame corrosion program was still active. No frame concerns were reported, and the program was never disclosed to me. Toyota has since denied assistance, even though the condition now represents a clear safety hazard. This frame corrosion is not cosmetic. It is structural and has already caused parts of the vehicle to detach.

[XXX] I ordered lower control arms from [XXX] . Not even a year later I had experienced a clunking noise when I turned the steering wheel. That weekend my wife and I rode up to our campsite. Seeing a deer in the road I slowed down only for the truck to veer to the left and almost hitting a logging truck. Talking to a mechanic, he told me that it was the bushings of the lower control arms at fault. Having no choice I bought two new control arms and had a shop put them on. Calling extreme terrain, they told me even though it has not been a year they couldn't give me a refund if I returned the old ones back to them. FRAME IS RUSTING.
Recently had routine service done on my 2010 Toyota Tacoma. Mechanic noted a lot of corrosion of the frame, including where leaf springs and axles are connected. He said that he had difficulty putting the vehicle on the lift for service due to the amount of corrosion and that he could not assure me that the vehicle is safe to drive.
My vehicle, which has been inspected at my local Toyota dealership, has significant rust corrosion, with perforation through the frame in several areas. I was told by the service manager that Toyota had sent out letters to owners (not a recall) to bring their vehicles in for inspection for this problem and that they would repair or replace the frame. I had not received any correspondence about this issue and have been told that this program expired in September of 2021,which now leaves me with the financial liability of replacing or repairing, which I have been told would cost between 14-20 thousand. I have contacted "The Toyota Brand engagement center" case#221121001445, and they confirm they cannot and will not do anything for me. My mechanic found excessive premature rusting to my truck's under carriage/frame. He suggested that I contact Toyota to see what could be done about this condition. Having never received a notice of recall I searched for recall information and called Toyota's "Brand Engage3ment Advocate". I found out that the recall for the frame expired 6 months ago. This is intolerable since the truck I own now was a replacement for a truck that had premature rusting of the frame. I thought surely that Toyota would have addressed this issue in my 2010 Tacoma and I was unaware that it would be a problem. Toyota Brand Engagement Center filed a case number for me (not really helpful to me) which is 221017000168.
ON 14 NOV 2020, I CALLED COGGINS TOYOTA, IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA IN REGARDS TO A RECALL ON LEAF SPRINGS FOR MY 2010 TACOMA. PER THE RECALL REMEDY ON THEIR WEBSITE, "TOYOTA WILL REPLACE THE LEAF SPRINGS WITH NEWLY DESIGNED ONES." THE SUPERVISOR AT COGGINS (JENNY, I BELIEVE) TOLD ME THE REMEDY WOULD ONLY BE IMPLEMENTED IF THE DEFECT CAN BE PHYSICALLY IDENTIFIED VIA INSPECTION, REGARDLESS OF WHAT IT SAYS ON THEIR RECALL WEB SITE. SHE REFUSED TO IMPLEMENT THE REMEDY IN SPITE OF THE RISK FACTORS, WHICH INCLUDE POSSIBLE FIRE INVOLVING THE FUEL TANK. TOYOTA SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO MITIGATE THE HAZARD, NOT WAIT FOR IT TO PRESENT ITSELF AND CAUSE HARM OR DEATH. TOOK TRUCK TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REQUESTING REAR LEAF SPRING ON PASSENGER SIDE TO BE REPLACED AFTER I REALIZED IT SQUEAKS ALL THE TIME AND RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE ABOUT SPRING. WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT THEY COULDN'T DO THE REPAIRS B/C IT HAS A LIFT KIT ON THE TRUCK AND IN ORDER FOR THEM TO PREFORM THE JOB THEY WOULD HAVE TO TAKE MY LIFT KIT OFF AT MY EXPENSE. LEAF SPRING IS STILL SQUEAKING. I EVEN ASKED IF TOYOTA WOULD PAY FOR THE LEAF SPRING AND LET ME HAVE SOMEONE ELSE INSTALL AND WAS TOLD NO. NOW I HAVE A SQUEAKY LEAF SPRING THAT COULD FAIL AT ANY TIME AND IT'S MY RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY TO GET IT FIXED EVEN THOUGH THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE PRODUCT.

SINCE I HAVE RECEIVED 3 OR 4 NHTSA RECALL 14V-604 NOTICES, I WOULD THINK THE SPRINGS WOULD BE AVAILABLE AFTER 10 MONTHS OF WAITING! WHAT AM I TO DO IF A SPRING BEAKS???? I WAS NOTIFIED OF A RECALL ON MY TACOMA LEAF SPRINGS ABOUT A YEAR AGO. THEN 3 MONTHS LATER OR SO I WAS NOTIFIED THAT "THE FIX" WAS READY AND THAT I SHOULD CALL MY DEALER TO SET UP AN APPOINTMENT. I DID SO IN ABOUT APRIL OF 2016. I HAVE HEARD NOTHING SINCE, EVEN THOUGH I'VE CONTACTED THEM ASKING WHEN THIS REPAIR COULD BE DONE. THEY "HAD NO INFORMATION."
THE DEALER HAS NOT REMEDIED THIS RECALL. I CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT OVER 23 WEEKS AGO. I WAS TOLD THE PARTS WOULD BE THERE IN 7 TO 10 DAYS. I CALLED AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THEY ARE WAITING FOR THE PARTS FROM THE VENDOR.
REGARDING RECALL # 14V-604. TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION ON NOV 8, 2016 AT BIG ISLAND TOYOTA, LOCATED IN KAILUA KONA, HI. DEALERSHIP SAID TRUCK FAILED INSPECTION. SAID REPLACEMENT PARTS WOULD ARRIVE IN SIX TO EIGHT MONTHS. SEEMS UNREASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO REPAIR A DEFECTIVE VEHICLE.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS TO CHECK WITH THE DEALER TO DETERMINE WHEN THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO PROVIDE A REPAIR SOLUTION FOR THE LEAF SPRING ASSEMBLY AND ALSO WHEN THE SECOND RECALL MAY BE PERFORMED. I RECEIVED A SECOND LETTER(IN 2015) ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE NOTING THAT A SOLUTION WILL BE IN PLACE IN EARLY 2016. I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM TOYOTA REGARDING THIS ISSUE IN 2016 YET THE ISSUE RECALL IS STILL ACTIVE ON THE NHTSA DATA BASE. AT THIS TIME, I HAVE NOT HAD AN INCIDENT WITH MY VEHICLE BUT AM DISAPPOINTED THAT TOYOTA HAS BEEN SO DELIBERATE IN FIXING THE PROBLEM. THAT IS MY COMPLAINT.

INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) WE RECENTLY PURCHASED A NEW 2010 TOYOTA TACOMA. ON ITS FIRST LONG DISTANCE TRIP, WITH LESS THAT 2000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE AND BARELY A MONTH OLD, THE REAR FACTORY INSTALLED HIGH PERFORMANCE BILSTEIN REAR SHOCKS GOT SO HOT THAT THE OIL SPRAYED OUT OF THE TOP SEAL MELTING THE BOOTS AND GETTING THEM SO HOT THE PLASTIC MATERIAL DRIPPED DOWN AND COATED THE CONNECTION TO THE REAR AXLE. THE SHOCKS COMPLETELY FAILED AT THAT POINT. WHEN I TOOK IT INTO TOYOTA OF ORANGE, IN ORANGE CALIFORNIA WHERE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, THEY INFORMED ME THERE WAS A BULLETIN OUT ON THE REAR SPRINGS. THEY REPLACED BOTH THE SPRINGS AND THE SHOCKS. I HAVE WRITTEN THEM SEVERAL TIMES TO FIND OUT WHETHER THE SHOCKS WERE FAULTY, OR IF IT WAS A REAR SPRING ISSUE, OR JUST A POOR DESIGN WITH THE VEHICLE, BUT HAVE NOT HEARD BACK FROM THEM TO DATE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN FOR THE VEHICLE IS UNSTABLE WHEN THE SHOCKS FAILED. WE ARE TRYING TO GET AN ANSWER AS TO WHY THIS VEHICLE, WITH BOTH FACTORY INSTALLED OFF-ROAD AND TOW PACKAGES, FAILED WITH ONLY A COUPLE HUNDRED POUNDS IN THE BED. IT MAY BE A REAL SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM IF THIS OCCURS WHEN WE HAVE A LOAD IN THE BED OR A PULLING A TRAILER. ALSO, YOU MAY WANT TO CONTACT TOYOTA AND FIND OUT WHY THIS HAPPENED. IF IT IS A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE, THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL OUT AND NOT JUST A BULLETIN TO PREVENT SOMEONE FROM GETTING SERIOUSLY INJURED.
