June 1st 2021 I went to park in a parking space at a local mall. My truck instead of stopping it accelerated out of control jumped two stone curbs, drove though a fence and landed into a swamp. Call Toyota and they have opened a new case # 210602000065. Police report # 21-374-AC. This isn't the first time that this has happen with this truck. It happen in Aug 2019. I contacted Toyota case number 1908060035. They sent out EAA Engineering Analysis Ass. out who did a ACM.CDRX file a month later. Toyota came back said they couldn't find anything wrong and my case was closed. Another incident in winter of 2016 where my truck was stopped and it accelerated on its own and It drove in the 4 way intersection where it caused an accident. lots of damage to cars. Toyota was contacted and they sent me to a dealer for repairs. Dealership has records of my truck coming in since I owned it with complaints of Truck not moving at all to all of sudden to acceleration on its own.
I BROUGHT TRUCK TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AS PART OF RUSTED FRAME RECALL TO BE VERIFIED. THEY STATED TRUCK WAS NOT RUSTED ENOUGH UNDERNEATH FOR TOYOTA TO APPROVE RECALL. THAT WAS A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. I HAVE RECENTLY BROUGHT IT TO A FEW MECHANICS TO DO SOME WORK ON A/C AS THE A/C STOPPED WORKING AND THAT REFUSE TO WORK ON IT AS THE TRUCK IS SO RUSTED UNDERNEATH!! THEY SAID IT WOULD CRUMBLE. NOT EVEN WORTH IT.

ON MY 2012 TACOMA THE CODE P2440 AND P2442 WHICH REPRESENT A STUCK OPEN VALVE IN THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM. UPON MY RESEARCH INTO THIS ISSUE ON FORUMS I HAVE LEARNED THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE TOYOTA SYSTEMS PARTICULARLY THE 2012 TACOMA. THE COST OF THE PART IS ABOUT 400 TO 500 DOLLARS FOR THE VALVES AND ANOTHER 500 DOLLARS FOR THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION PUMP. THE FAILURE WILL PLACE THE VEHICLE INTO A LIMP MODE AND HAS TO BE FIXED IN ORDER TO THE TRUCK TO KEEP ON GOOD WORKING CONDITION. IT SEEMS LIKE THIS ERROR HAS AFFECTED MANY TACOMA OWNERS. *TR

TWO DASHBOARD LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AT THE SAME TIME: THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THE TRAC OFF LIGHT. AT FIRST I REALLY DIDN'T NOTICE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE BUT AFTER 2 DAYS I EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT POWER LOSS. I WOULD PULL OUT INTO TRAFFIC OK UNTIL ABOUT 20MPH THEN HAVE NO POWER. IT CRAWLED WHILE TRYING TO GET UP TO SPEED. I READ ON THE INTERNET THAT IF YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AND OPEN THE GAS CAP THE LIGHTS WOULD GO OUT AND THE PROBLEM WOULD GO AWAY. I DID THIS AND IT WORKED; OR SO I THOUGHT. I THEN LEFT FOR AN HOUR TRIP (I KNOW DUMB) AND WITHIN 15 MINS THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON AND I COULDN'T GET THE TRUCK OVER 60MPH ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY. I ACTUALLY STOPPED AT A REST STOP AND DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY AND REMOVED THE GAS CAP. AGAIN THIS SHUT OFF THE LIGHTS BUT ONLY FOR ABOUT 5 MINS. THEN THE POWER LOSS WAS BACK. TOOK TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC WHO I TRUST AND HE SAID IT WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM THAT WAS SOMETHING CALLED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN BUT NOT YET A RECALL. APPARENTLY THE TUNDRA AND SEQUOIA ARE RECALLED FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT NOT THE TACOMA. I DON'T GET IT. I WAS TOLD TO KEEP MY RECEIPTS ($1,870.68) RIGHT AFTER CHRISTMAS THANK YOU, AND HOPEFULLY ONE DAY GET REIMBURSED IF IT BECOMES A RECALL. FAILURE OF THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM P2440 AND P2442, WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING ONTO A CITY STREET FROM A PARKING LOT. WHEN ACCELERATING IMMEDIATELY THERE WAS A DECREASE IN POWER AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALONG WITH THE "TRAC OFF" LIGHT ILLUMINATING SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE VEHICLE HAS A NOW MAXIMUM SPEED OF AROUND 55 MPH AND EXTREMELY SLOW TO ACCELERATE BEING ALMOST DANGEROUS ON BUSIER ROADS. AFTER BEING CHECK OUT BY A THE DEALER IT WAS FOUND TO BE THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM WHICH IS COVERED BY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT PARTS ARE ON BACK-ORDER.

WHILE ON A ROAD TRIP I HAD MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO DEFECTIVE SECONDARY INJECTION VALVES BEING STUCK CLOSED/OPEN. THE CODES I HAD FOR THIS ISSUE IS P2440 AND P2442. IN MY CASE THIS ISSUE MADE MY TRUCK GO INTO LIMP MODE WHICH IS OFTEN A LOSS OF POWER IN THE ENGINE AND SOMETIMES A RESTRICTION IN ONE'S ABILITY TO SHIFT THE TRUCK. LUCKILY THE HIGHWAY WAS NOT BUSY AT THE TIME THIS HAPPENED, BUT IF IT WERE I WOULD BELIEVE THAT IT WOULD BE A VERY UNSAFE THING TO HAPPEN GOING 70 MPH. THE PARTS DO HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY UNTIL 2022 IF I REMEMBER RIGHT, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE TOYOTA IS NOT INTERESTED IN RECALLING THESE PARTS EVEN AFTER THEY HAVE KNOWN FOR MANY YEARS THAT THESE PARTS ARE DEFECTIVE. I HAVE DONE QUITE A BIT OF RESEARCH AND FOUND ISSUES WITH THESE PARTS GOING BACK TO 2013.

DURING NORMAL DRIVING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL OFF LIGHT CAME ON AND TRUCK IMMEDIATELY WENT IN TO LIMP-HOME MODE. I HAD IT SCANNED FOR CODES AT THE LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE AND IT CAME BACK WITH P2440 AND P2442 WHICH SEEMS LIKE A COMMON ISSUE WITH A VALVE IN THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION SYSTEM. I QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH SHOWED THAT SOME 2012 TACOMA OWNERS ARE GETTING THIS COVERED UNDER A SPECIAL WARRANTY EXTENSION, SO I PUTTERED OVER TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP EXPECTING TO HEAR THE SAME STORY, BUT THEY ARE TELLING ME THE ECM COMPUTER IS BAD. WHICH I AM TRYING TO GET CLARIFICATION ON SINCE I CAN'T FIND ANY ECM FAILURE ISSUES FOR THIS MAKE AND MODEL YEAR.

TOYOTA HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THIS ISSUE IN A TSB, BUT PROVIDES NO RECALL, DESPITE THIS BEING A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN IT HAPPENS.

AFTER READING ABOUT THE ERROR CODES THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR ALL 2012 TACOMA OWNERS AND TOYOTA WARRANTY REFUSES TO COVER ANY OF THE COST OR RECALL THE PART (THE SAME ISSUE ON TOYOTA TUNDRAS WAS RECALLED).

THE CONTACT WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT THE AIR INJECTION PUMP MAY EVENTUALLY NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO NHTSA. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 133,472.

DEALER ADVISED APPROXIMATELY $2,000 TO REPAIR. AFTER SEEING ALL THE OTHER COMPLAINTS FROM 2012 TACOMA OWNERS, I CAN NOT BELIEVE TOYOTA WILL NOT COVER THIS UNDER A RECALL SINCE THEY COVERED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM WITH THE TUNDRA AND SEQUOIA.

I ASKED IF THEY HAD DEALT WITH THIS BEFORE AND THEY SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR TOYOTA AND THEY HAVE DONE RECALLS ON BOTH THE TUNDRA AND SEQUOIA MODELS THAT HAVE HAD THESE ISSUES, BUT THE TACOMA HASN'T HAD A RECALL YET, EVEN THOUGH IT SEEMS TO BE JUST AS COMMON WITH THE SAME PARTS. THEY SAID THE COST OF PARTS AND LABOR WOULD BE AROUND $2,000. WHEN I ASKED THEM IF THE VEHICLE WAS SAFE TO DRIVE OFF THEIR LOT THEY SAID THESE CODES CAN CAUSE THE TACOMA TO GO INTO "LIMP MODE" WHERE YOU CAN LOOSE POWER, ACCELERATION, AND WON'T BE ABLE TO GO OVER 45MPH. I HATE TO THINK WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I HAD KEPT MERGING ONTO THE INTERSTATE AND TRIED TO GET UP TO SPEED ONLY TO "LIMP" INTO TRAFFIC OR IF THIS HAD HAPPENED A MINUTE LATER ON THE INTERSTATE! EVERY THREAD I READ ONLINE FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES SHOW PEOPLE HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES FROM AS LOW AS 1,000 MILES ON THE TRUCK. THE ISSUES WITH THE SECONDARY AIR INJECTION PUMP AND SWITCHING VALVES SEEMS MOST COMMON BETWEEN 50,000-80,000 MILES, BUT EVENTUALLY DOES HAPPEN IN THE 2012-2015 TOCOMA MODELS.

THESE CODES PUT ME INTO LIMP MODE WHILE ON THE FREEWAY IN SNOWY AND ICY CONDITIONS. I COULD NOT MAINTAIN SPEED WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC AS I WAS TRYING TO GET TO THE SHOULDER WITH TRAFFIC ZOOMING ALL AROUND ME, DANGEROUS AND SCARY! TOYOTA WANTS $2000 TO REPAIR IT. MODE CAUSES MY TRUCK TO ONLY DRIVE ABOUT 45 SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTS PERFORMANCE AND DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD,I HAD NO WARNING THAT THE LOSS OF PERFORMANCE WAS GOING TO HAPPEN INITIALLY WHEN I WAS TRAVELING.THERE IS ANOTHER PROBLEM THAT APPEARS TO BE ON A LARGER SCALE.I HAVE BRIEFLY SCANNED THE INTERNET IN THE LAST HOUR AND SPOKE WITH VARIOUS VENDORS ABOUT THE PROBLEM & I HAVE CALLED MY DEALERSHIP & EVEN THE MAIN TOYOTA LINE AND EVERYONE IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE. LOGICALLY, THIS IS WHY THE AIR INJECTION SWITCHING VALVES 1 AND 2 ARE BOTH STUCK OPEN ONE CODE FOR EACH OF THE VALVES. THE NEXT THING THAT IS UNUSUAL IS THAT THERE ARE AN INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM BUT NO RECALL..THEN I FOUND THE TUNDRA RECALL FOR THE EXACT SAME PUMP ISSUE! IT IS PECULIAR, THAT A DIFFERENT MODEL TRUCK WITH THE SAME PUMP HAS THIS PROBLEM & NO RECALL OR REMEDY. FACT-TUNDRA IS A MORE EXPENSIVE TRUCK THAN TACOMA, IS TOYOTA FIXING PUBLIC RELATION ISSUES FOR THOSE MORE WELL OFF BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW TO COMPLAIN TO THE RIGHT FOLKS OR CAUSE A BIG STIR AND THEY WILL HOLD OFF ON PULLING THE TRIGGER ON A "WARRANTY FIX OR RECALL" ON THE WORKING MANS TACOMA? I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED BY A LARGE TRUCK AND WAS FORCED TO CROSS MULTIPLE LANES OF TRAFFIC TO GET TO THE BERM AND ASCERTAIN THE SITUATION. AS I COULD FIND NO ISSUES UPON INSPECTION, I PRECARIOUSLY DROVE THE VEHICLE TO A SERVICE STORE TO READ THE ERROR CODES. THE VEHICLE SHOWED P2440 P2442 ERROR CODES INDICATING SECONDARY AIR INJECTION FAILURES. APPARENTLY, THE VEHICLE WENT INTO LIMP MODE UPON THROWING THESE CODES WHICH LIMITS SPEED AND ENGINE RPM. THIS ALMOST CAUSED A HUGE ACCIDENT AND PUT ME INTO A A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. ADDITIONALLY UPON RESEARCHING THESE ISSUES, IT SEEMS THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUE CAUSED BY MANUFACTURING DEFECTS ISOLATED TO THE 2012 MODEL YEAR. APPARENTLY, THE SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE IN MULTIPLE WAYS. FIRST, A PIECE OF FOAM IS INSIDE THE SECONDARY AIR PUMP WHICH DEGRADES AND IS SUCKED INTO THE FAN WHICH NOT ONLY CAUSES STOPPAGE AND BURNING OUT THE FAN MOTOR BUT ALSO ALLOWS FOR STINKY RESIDUE AND DEBRIS TO ENTER THE VALVES CAUSING THEM TO JAM OPEN OR CLOSED. ADDITIONALLY, THE SYSTEM ALLOWS MOISTURE TO BE SUCKED INTO THE VALVES ADDING TO CORROSION AND DEGRADATION OF THE VALVES LEADING TO THEM TO BE STUCK. THIS IS A ROUGHLY 1500.00-2000.00 REPAIR. IT IS A QUITE FREQUENT PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL YET IS NOT COVERED UNDER RECALL OR SERVICE BULLETIN. TOYOTA HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE ISSUE YET NOT TAKEN ANY ACTION. I SEE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ONLINE AND A VERY EXPENSIVE FIX FOR US ALL. UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, COUNTLESS OTHERS WERE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THE TOYOTA TUNDRA ALSO HAD THIS ISSUE AND AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WAS OFFERED FOR THOSE VEHICLES. DOING SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE IN 2ND GEN TACOMAS, MOSTLY THE 2012. THIS A VERY WELL KNOWN ISSUE, ESPECIALLY TO TOYOTA, AND THEY HAVE SO FAR DONE NOTHING ABOUT IT. THIS LED TO A VERY DANGEROUS NEAR CRASH INCIDENT WHICH I THEN HAD TO PAY OVER 1200 DOLLARS TO FIX. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. TOYOTA MUST AT LEAST TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THEIR POORLY DESIGNED PARTS AND COVER THE REPLACEMENT OF THESE VALVES AND PUMPS. THIS IS HAPPENING ALL OVER THE COUNTRY ON A CONSISTENT AND PERSISTENT BASIS. BEFORE BEING ABLE TO FIX, I HAD TO WORK A SHIFT AT MY SECOND JOB OF SKI PATROL IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. AS MY TRUCK OBVIOUSLY COULDN'T MAKE IT UP THE CANYON, I WAS FORCED TO BORROW ANOTHER CAR, AND ALL I COULD GET WAS A 2 WHEEL DRIVE. THERE WAS A LATE SEASON STORM, AND BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE MY 4X4 TRUCK I GOT STUCK OVERNIGHT IN THE MOUNTAINS. I SURVIVED, BUT TWICE BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE I WAS FACED INTO A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THIS HAPPENED AS I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD ONTO A STATE ROUTE WITH SPEED LIMIT OF 55 MPH AND CARS GOING WAY FASTER THAN THAT. THIS COULD POSE A DANGER IF SITUATIONS WHERE SPEED IT REQUIRED TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF ANOTHER CAR. TRUCK ONLY HAS 57K MILES ON IT. THIS IS A SUPPLEMENTAL EMISSIONS SYSTEM AND SHOULD NOT CAUSE THE TRUCK TO BE USELESS IF FAIL.

THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SAID THIS WOULD COST ME CLOSE TO $2000 TO REPAIR. I PAID $30,000 FOR THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW JUST 4 YEARS AGO. THIS NEEDS TO BECOME A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT SO THAT A SAFETY RECALL IS ISSUED FOR TOYOTA TO REPAIR THIS KNOWN DEFECT FOR FREE.

WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND WENT INTO LIMP MODE. PULLED INTO A FIRESTONE AND THEY SAID IT WAS ALSO CODE P2441. THEY RESET IT AND IT DIDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN UNTIL A FEW DAYS AGO. THIS TIME THE CODE WOULD NOT RESET, WARNING LIGHT WON'T TURN OFF AND REMAINS IN LIMP MODE.
