I purchased the vehicle new and noticed right away that the transmisson would clunk right away when I put it into gear[ it's an automatic]. I asked the dealership about it and they said it was normal and no issues. Now I'm [XXX] and have owned many cars so.... Anyway, over the years I've asked several times and they say no issue. Now, just this morning, my wife found an article about the issue and Toyota is finally admitting there IS an issue. What can I do? AT shifter was stiff from purchase. I thought this was normal. Sometimes it shifted OK, most times not. Had independent repair shops lubricate the shifter multiple times to no avail. Then the shifter wouldn't move at all and I was in a traffic lane causing a dangerous situation. Had truck towed to an independent repair shop that found a second way to lubricate the shaft. Curious how many trucks left the factory without AT shaft lubricated.

My 2016 Toyota Tacoma has had multiple oil leaks in the timing cover. The dealer has already fixed this issue twice and the timing cover is currently leaking oil. This leak is expensive to fix because it involves removing the engine and the transmission to properly seal the timing cover. This is a know defect that poses a serious safety concern as the oil leak may go from a small leak to a large leak quickly, causing the engine to fail. Additionally the air pressure from driving can cause the oil to end up everywhere which can lead other components to degrade and fail. Because the fix is so complex, the process to remove and reinstall the engine and transmission may result in other mistakes. During one of the attempts to fix the issue, the dealer forgot to replace an engine bolt and forgot to hook up a vent hose. The cost to fix this issue is so high that it makes it too expensive for many to fix.

Vehicle made a loud bang from the rear of the vehicle , then started to slow down slightly without brakes applied. And then suddenly within a few more feet the Rear wheels locked up without brakes applied. Traveling at between 35- 45mph the vehicle skidded causing vehicles behind me to also skid to avoid hitting me. Truck would not move from this position , I was stuck in the lane without a shoulder to move close to . I was shaken pretty bad, out of fear I popped the truck into reverse and the rear of the truck made a loud bang or loud pop noise. It wouldn’t move back so I put it back in drive and it made another bang noise and started to roll forward with a lot of resistance . There was no safe place to park, I was close to home so I continued home driving very slow with my hazard lights on . Please help. I towed the truck to Servco Kauai Toyota 9-23-2022, they did not look at the truck until 10-20-2022 almost a month it sat at the Toyota. I went home and checked online to see if anyone had the same problem and found Tech. Bulletins and a Recall for this problem, I did not receive a letter for this recall. I had no idea there was even a Recall. Service advisor [XXX] and Service Manager [XXX]told me my vehicle does not fall into the criteria of this recall. Service Manager [XXX] said they are not part of Servco and this dealership would not perform this recall because it is a maintenance issue ( What ?) Please help . I towed My truck home , I m trying to sell my truck as is because the dealership gave me a quote of over $7000 to fix this problem. No one wants to buy my truck in this condition. Vehicle pulls or skips a gears when driving

I brought my truck into Miller Toyota of Anaheim due to a violent shuddering and acceleration at about 40 to 50 mph. This could have caused driver to lose control and injure themselves, passengers, and other drivers on the road. Dealership diagnosed the problem as a bad torque converter in the transmission and said it would cost about $3200.00 to repair. Couldn't afford that so I took vehicle to an independent repair shop and they notified me that there was a Toyota Service Bulletin that addressed this concern and that they would have to do a complete reprogramming update of Transmission Control Module. I haven't had any issues since this was done but the dealership should have been aware of this problem which could be potentially fatal. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to this failure or during the failure.

I have three signifcant issues with my Tacoma: 1. A few months after purchasing my Tacoma in 2016 Toyota (no accidents to date & 95% highway driving) and one outside alignment shop had never been able to get the truck aligned properly so it would never keep its alignment more than 3-4 months; repeated visits to Toyota maintence for alignment over the years became as routine as an oil change, sometimes more frequently; the unaligned suspension constantly was causing unsafe handling and unintentional swerving. 2. Toyota missed, and maybe purposefully, identifying major engine, transfer case, and transmission leaks during regular and routine serivces (always serviced at Toyota dealerships) until my mileage exceeded 60,000 miles. Then when I asked the dealership to recheck a recent transfer case refresh because I saw leaks, I needed and got over $3,000 in repairs e.g. power steering pump, front and rear seals, differential gasket-- it was terrible. Toyota did give a good will reimbursment of $1,400. 3. Now ~6 months later and still under 80,000 miles, I just spent $4,100 for repairs on more engine leaks; Toyota will not tell me if my vehicle is safe to drive, tells me the truck is ourside its warranty period (as it was last year), and refuses any goodwill adjustment. Is this 2016 Toyota Tacoma TRD a lemon?

After starting the truck and idling for any length of time, I place my foot on the brake and shift into Reverse or Drive. The truck almost leaps if I don't keep my foot on the brake. There is a noticeable pause many times, so it seems to be electronically controlled transmission. I have read that dealerships can Flash the ECU module and it will resolve it, but I do not have any "unresolved recalls" at this time.

Vehicle has been jerking itself while driving at both low speeds and high speeds. Had taken it to the dealership Sept.2020 in order to get the ECU/PCM reflashed/updated to resolve issue; issue persists. Now, at highway speeds, 80% of the time it will be jerking itself, as off being momentarily shut off and on. Caused my rear end to fish tail on highway.

THE TRUCK DID NOT MOVE OR SHIFT DESPITE HEARING THE ENGINE ACCELERATE ACCOMPANIED BY THE METALLIC GEAR-LIKE GRIND SOUND. SOUND VERY SIMILAR TO A STICK CAR WHEN YOU TRY TO ENGAGE A SHIFT WITHOUT THE CLUTCH (BUT MY TRUCK IS 2016 AUTOMATIC TRD-SPORT). LASTLY, WHEN TAKING SPEED BUMPS OR HARD SHIFTING MOTION (UP-DOWN) YOU CAN HEAR THE SUSPENSIONS MAKE A LOUD CLANK NOISE AS THE TRUCK SHIFTS IN THE SPEED BUMP MOTION.

ON LONG TRIPS WHERE THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN FOR SEVERAL MILES IN ONE GEAR IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO PULL IT OUT OF 4TH, 5TH OR 6TH GEAR IN ORDER TO CHANGE GEARS. THIS RESULTED IN DANGEROUS SPEED CONTROL ISSUES (BOTH TOO FAST AND TOO SLOW FOR TRAFFIC) WHILE DRIVING ON MOUNTAINOUS HIGHWAYS. THE PROBLEM AND ITS REPAIR ARE EXACTLY DESCRIBED ON TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN TSB-0088-16. IN MY OPINION THE BULLETIN SHOULD BE ESCALATED TO A RECALL BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY CONCERNS. THE PROBLEM IS REPEATABLE BUT DIFFICULT TO DEMONSTRATE TO A TECHNICIAN BECAUSE IT REQUIRES A LONG DRIVE TIME AND UNDER CERTAIN TERRAIN AND/OR DRIVING CONDITIONS.

STILL MISFIRES.). 2) VEHICLE STALLS DUE TO TRANSMISSION SEARCHING FOR THE CORRECT GEAR (DEVELOPED AFTER THE LAST ATTEMPT TO REPAIR MISFIRE IN SEPTEMBER 2016). 2) ENGINE HAS DEVELOPED A RATTLE AFTER 20,000 + MILES AND SOMETIMES SOUNDS LIKE A ROD IS KNOCKING. SOUNDS LIKE ENGINE IS NOT BEING LUBRICATED PROPERLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO EARLY FAILURE OF THE SMOG CONTROL SYSTEM AND EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION (TOYOTA CLAIMS THIS IS NORMAL FOR THIS TRUCK). 3) BUMP SOUND COMES FROM BENEATH TRUCK WHEN STOPPING AND MAY BE LOOSE OR BROKEN MOTOR OR TRANSMISSION MOUNT (TOYOTA STATED THAT THE TRUCK IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED). 4) GRINDING SOUND COMES FROM REAR END WHEN REAR WHEELS SLIP AND AUTOMATIC LIMITED SLIP IS SELECTED (TOYOTA HAS STATED THAT THE TRUCK IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED). 5) ENGINE REVS UNEXPECTEDLY WHEN BACKING OUT OF OR DRIVING INTO GARAGE (TOYOTA HAS STATED THAT THE TRUCK IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED). 6) LOUD BANG COMES FROM BENEATH TRUCK WHEN COMING TO A QUICK STOP. SOUNDS LIKE THE GUTS OF THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT FORWARD (DEALERSHIP HAS NOT ARRANGED TO PROVIDE A LOANER TRUCK SO THAT THIS PROBLEM AND ALL THE PERSISTENT PROBLEMS LISTED ABOVE CAN BE REPAIRED. TOYOTA INSIST THAT I BRING MY TRUCK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND DRIVE MY TRUCK AROUND AND DEMONSTRATE THE EXISTENCE OF THESE PROBLEMS TO THE TOYOTA'S FIELD SERVICE TECH. DEALERSHIP IS AWARE THAT THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR REAR DIFFERENTIAL PROBLEMS AND ENGINE MISFIRE AND STALLING. I NEED THE DEALERSHIP TO ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS DEFECTIVE TRUCK AND TAKE IT INTO THEIR SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND KEEP IT UNTIL IT IS REPAIRED. I NEED A LOANER TRUCK WHILE THE REPAIRS ARE MADE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 17V356000 (ENGINE) AND 17V285000 (POWER TRAIN); HOWEVER, THE PART NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000. I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING NOISE THAT SOUNDS LIKE IT'S COMING FROM UNDER MY TRUCK BED AND REDUCED PROPULSION. ROSEVILLE TOYOTA COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WHEN I TOOK IT THERE FOR MY FIRST 3 SERVICES. SO ON 5/22/17 I TOOK MY TRUCK TO FOLSOM LAKE TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME ABOUT THE REAR DIFF LEAK NHTSA RECALL#17V-285 AND INSPECTED AND FOUND A LEAK. THEY TOLD ME I WOULD RECEIVE A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL AND WHEN I DO CALL THEM TO ORDER THE PARTS. I CALLED THEM WHEN I GOT THE NOTICE IN JUNE AND WAS TOLD I'D BE CALLED WHEN THE PARTS ARE IN AND ITS 10/3/17 AND THEY STILL DO NOT HAVE ALL THE PARTS IN AND HAVE NOT REPAIRED MY NEW 2016 TACOMA IN A TIMELY MANNER.

TOYOTA RECALL -- RECEIVED NOTICE OF RECALL AND TOOK TRUCK TO LOCAL DEALER JUNE 22, 2017 I WAS ADVISED THE IT FAILED THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL LEAK, AND I WAS INFORMED OF A NEW RECALL FOR THE CRANK SHAFT BUT NEITHER COULD BE FIXED DUE TO NO PARTS. I WAS TOLD I CAN DRIVE IT UNTIL THE PARTS COME IN, BUT THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE NHTSA WEBSITE LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT I COULD HAVE CRASHED BY CONTINUING TO DRIVE IT. I NEEDED THE TRUCK, TO DRIVE TO CINCINNATI, OH AND BACK ON JULY 11-13 SO I HAD RETRIEVED IT BACK FROM THE DEALER BASED ON THE SERVICE MANAGER'S ASSURANCE THAT IT WAS O.K. TO DRIVE. ON THE WAY BACK FROM THE TRIP TO CINCINNATI ON JULY 13, 2017, I PUT IT IN DRIVE AND APPLIED GAS, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED, JUST AS I WENT TO PUT IT BACK IN PARK, IT LUNGED FORWARD AND I ALMOST HIT A CAR. IT "DELAYED" LIKE THAT ANYTIME I STOPPED TO REST AND STARTED TO CONTINUE BACK ON THE TRIP. I THEN HAD ANOTHER TRIP TO ALABAMA I HAD TO GO ON AND THERE WERE NO RENTAL CARS AVAILABLE, AND AGAIN, I WAS TOLD IT WAS OK TO DRIVE. THE DELAY GOT WORSE ON THAT TRIP AND I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER ON JULY 22, 2017. IT IS STILL AT THE DEALER AND NO RELIEF IN SIGHT YET AFTER 6 WEEKS SO FAR.

IT HAS BEEN OVER A MONTH AND 4 CHECK INS WITH THE DEALER AND NO ETA FOR FIX. CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY CANNOT GIVE A TIME FOR A FIX. THEY HAVE PROVIDED A RENTAL VEHICLE, FIRST A DODGE TRUCK SINCE I HAD OBLIGATIONS, THEY PROVIDED THAT FOR 2 WEEKS THEN REQUESTED I GET A CAR. I AGREED BUT NOW IT IS TIME FOR VACATION AND NEED A TRUCK AGAIN. CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE TO EXPLAIN FRUSTRATION WITH DELAY THE GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER 1707241363 AND STATED SINCE I WAS REQUESTING AN IMMEDIATE FIX OR FOR THEM TO PURCHASE A CASE MANAGER WOULD HAVE TO CALL ME WITHIN 24 HOURS. CASE MANAGER DID NOT CALL WITHIN 24 HOURS BUT DID RECEIVE A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP THAT ENTERPRISE HAD NO TRUCKS AT THIS TIME BUT AS SOON AS ONE WAS AVAILABLE THEY WOULD PROVIDE ME WITH A TRUCK. I CALLED BACK TO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS CONNECTED TO CASE MANAGER [XXX] WHO SAID, "DID THE DEALERSHIP CALL YOU? " I EXPLAINED YES BUT THERE MUST BE SOME CONFUSION. I WANT MY TRUCK BACK FIXED OR FOR THEM TO PURCHASE TRUCK BACK. SHE GOT VERY LOUD AND UNPROFESSIONAL AND STATED. " IT IS A RECALL AND WE ARE ONLY PROVIDING LOANERS AND NO BUYBACKS". THIS HAS MADE THE SITUATION WORSE AND I EXPLAINED THAT THERE ARE OTHER ISSUES THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED TO THE DEALER AS WELL SUCH AS TRANSMISSION NOT GOING INTO GEAR AND SQUEAKY LEAF SPRINGS. NOW THEY ARE TELLING ME THEY REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO RECEIVE THE PARTS FOR THE RECALL. THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. THEY ARE TELLING THE CONSUMER THAT THEY HAVE NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER. MY TRUCK IS PAID FOR AND I WANT IT BACK.IT'S NOW SITTING IN THEIR BACK LOT IN THE 110 DEGREE HEAT OF ARIZONA. IS TOYOTA GOING TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY FOR ME ON THE PAINT SINCE THE DUST IS JUST BAKING ON IN THE SUMMER SUN? ON JUNE 27 I WAS CHECKING THE TACOMA PRIOR TO OUR LEAVING ON VACATION AND NOTICED SEEPAGE ON THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL IN 3 LOCATIONS. I EMAILED TOYOTA WITH MY CONCERN. I INFORMED THEM I WOULD BE TAKING MY TACOMA TO THE DEALER ON JUNE 28, 2017 TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. I TOOK THE TACOMA ON JUNE 28, 2017 TO 2NDTOYOTA DEALER. I INFORMED THE SERVICE ADVISOR OF MY CONCERN WITH THE DIFFERENTIAL. THE MASTER TECH LOOKED AT IT. I FOLLOWED UP WITH TOYOTA CORPORATE BY PHONE INFORMED THEM OF MY CONCERNS AND WAS ADVISED TO SPEAK WITH THE SERVICE MGR. AND I DID. AFTER THE TECH HAD A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THE TACOMA I WAS ADVISED THAT I WOULD NEED TO HAVE THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL REPLACED. THE SERVICE MGR. TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD ORDER THE PARTS TO REPAIR MY TACOMA AND I COULD HAVE USE OF A TRUCK ON LOAN FROM THE DEALERSHIP UNTIL MY TACOMA COULD BE REPAIRED. I RETURNED FROM VACATION MY TRUCK WAS NOT REPAIRED WAS TOLD TOYOTA WAS HAVING SOME TYPE OF ISSUE BECAUSE 1ST DEALER HAD ALL READY PERFORMED THE RECALL. HOWEVER, THE TACOMA BEGIN LEAKING AND THE DIFFERENTIAL WAS MAKING A LOUD NOISE AFTER THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED INITIALLY. I AM CONFUSED AS IT STILL SHOULD BE A WARRANTY COVERED ISSUE EVEN IF ANOTHER DEALER HAD ALL READY DID A RECALL. THE SERVICE ADVISOR AGREED AND THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO GET THE TRUCK REPAIRED. IT IS MY CONTENTION THAT THE 1ST DEALER DID THE RECALL CORRECTLY AND THE DIFFERENTIAL FAILED BECAUSE OF SUBSTANDARD PARTS OR DESIGN AFTER THE FIRST RECALL WAS DONE. MY CONCERN IS THAT MY TACOMA IS POTENTIALLY A RISK OF CRASH AS NOTED IN THE OFFICIAL TOYOTA RECALL. MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER SINCE JUNE 28TH 2017 OR 15 DAYS AND COUNTING.

I'VE YET TO GET AN ASSESSMENT AND RETURN DATE. THE DEALERSHIP SEEMS TO NOT BE GETTING INFORMATION FROM THE CORPORATE OFFICE. I CONTACTED THE CORPORATE OFFICE TO ASK WHAT MY OPTIONS WERE. (REFUND, REPLACEMENT, ETC) I TOLD THEM I WAS AWARE OF A "LEMON LAW" . THE REP GOT KIND OF SHORT WITH ME, SAID I WOULD BE HEARING FROM THEIR LEGAL DEPT. AFTER 2 WEEKS NO RESPONSE, I CALLED BACK. THEY SAID IT COULD BE 30-45 DAYS BEFORE GETTING A RESPONSE. CONCERNS I HAVE ARE: 1) MY VEHICLE JUST SETTING THERE NOT BEING DRIVEN DEVELOPING MORE PROBLEMS I'LL HAVE TO DEAL WITH. 2) A "BLACK MARK" ON ITS RESALE VALUE. 3) TOYOTA TRYING TO FORCE ME INTO A "LOW BALL" SETTLEMENT. THE MANAGER TOLD ME THEY WOULD BE FIXED ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVE BASIS. HE SAID HE HAD A SMALL DEALERSHIP AND HE WASN'T SURE HOW FAST HE COULD GET PARTS BECAUSE THERE WERE 288,000 TACOMA'S INVOLVED. I AM OUT OF A TRUCK FOR GOD KNOWS HOW LONG.

THE REAR WHEELS ON MY 2016 TOYOTA TACOMA LOCKED UP AS I WAS TRAVELLING STRAIGHT AT APPROX. 55 MPH ON THE 110 NORTH FREEWAY DURING RUSH HOUR. IN THE SAME SITUATION IT MAY REACT DIFFERENTLY -DURING HARD ACCELERATION AFTER YOU LET UP ON THE GAS, THE ENGINE RPM'S WILL STAY HIGH AND SLOWLY COME BACK DOWN. THE VEHICLE IS PRESENTING UNSAFE CONDITIONS. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER MULTIPLE TIMES. 1ST TIME THEY TOPPED OFF THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AS IT WAS LOW FROM THE FACTORY. 2ND TIME THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND OTHERS WERE HAVING IT AS WELL AND THE TRANSMISSION ECU WAS RE-FLASHED. THIS STILL DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. BROUGHT THE VEHICLE BACK A 3RD TIME AND THEY DIDN'T SEE A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. BROUGHT IT BACK A 4TH TIME TO BE SEEN BY A FIELD SPECIALIST AND THE ISSUE COULD BE DUPLICATED BUT THERE IS NO FIX AT THIS TIME BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS LESS THAN 2500 MILES ON IT. NOT SURE WHY YOU WOULD DESIGN A VEHICLE TO DO THIS.

THIS TOYOTA TACOMA IS ALWAYS TRYING TO SHIFT UP OR DOWN. I FOUND WHERE TOYOTA SAYS IT IS ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A NEW SHIFT POINT TO KEEP THE MILEAGE UP. THIS TRANSMISSION SHIFTS VERY HARD WITH POWER REDUCTION AND IS TRYING TO UP SHIFT. WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO COME TO A STOP TRANSMISSION TRYING TO SHIFT UP AND THEN IT WILL SHIFT HARD. YOU WILL FEEL A DRIVELINE CLUNK AS YOU STOP. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THEY SAID TOYOTA KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID A CASE WAS OPENED. I WAS TOLD THEY DROVE SEVERAL ON THEIR LOT AND THEY WERE THE SAME. THE FINAL WORD WAS NOTHING WRONG . THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. HAS BEEN DOING SINCE I GOT THE TRUCK.

WHILE DRIVING EASTBOUND ON THE 210 FREEWAY IN GLENDORA, CA AT APPROX 35MPH THE VEHICLE CAME TO A SUDDEN AND VIOLENT STOP AND VEERED SLIGHTLY INTO THE LANE TO MY RIGHT. I WAS NOT BRAKING AT THE TIME. REAR WHEELS HAD LOCKED AND VEHICLE HAD TO BE DRAGGED TO THE SHOULDER AS REAR WHEELS WOULD NOT TURN. THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS OF ANY PROBLEM AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE, AND SEEMED TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA OF GLENDORA IN GLENDORA, CA FOR SERVICE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAD LEAKED OUT, AND IT ALONG WITH THE REAR TIRES HAD BEEN REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THIS WAS A NEW VEHICLE WITH LESS THAN 4500 MILES ON IT. IT HAD NOT HAD ITS FIRST OIL CHANGE NOR ANY OTHER SERVICE. THE PROBLEM WAS NOT CAUSED BY EXTERNAL DAMAGE, AND IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME BY THE DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THE PART HAD NOT BEEN PROPERLY SEALED. VEHICLE HAS NO WARNING SYSTEM OR DASH LIGHT TO COMMUNICATE A LOSS OF DIFFERENTIAL FLUID AS IT WOULD WITH OIL, TIRE PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE, ETC.

THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION CONSISTENTLY GETS STUCK IN GEAR ONCE THE TRANSMISSION IS HOT. THIS TYPICALLY OCCURS ON DRIVES OVER 2-3 HOURS OR HEAVY STOP-GO TRAFFIC. THE DRIVER CANNOT CHANGE GEARS WITHOUT EXCESSIVE FORCE ON THE SHIFTER, RESULTING IN SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN DRIVING DYNAMICS WHILE THIS IS OCCURRING (E.G., LOSS OF VEHICLE SPEED, LOSS OF ENGINE REVS, LUGGING TRANSMISSION). EXAMPLES INCLUDE DOWNSHIFTS FROM 5-6, 5-4, 4-3, AND 3-2 AS WELL AS UPSHIFTS THROUGH THOSE SAME GEARS. THIS PRESENTS A CRITICAL SAFETY CONCERN WHEN THE TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTIONS AND THE VEHICLE DOES NOT OPERATE AS INTENDED. ONE IS FINE AND THE OTHER HAS SERIOUS POWER TRAIN (ENGINE/TRANSMISSION) PROBLEMS RESULTING IN EXTREMELY SLOW ACCELERATION AND OVERALL SLUGGISH PERFORMANCE, TRANSMISSION CONSTANTLY SHIFTING TO COMPENSATE FOR LACK OF POWER, TRANSMISSION SLOW TO ENGAGE GEARS CAUSING DANGEROUS HESITATION AND SURGE, OCCASIONALLY SLAMMING INTO GEAR CAUSING SUDDEN JERK AND LUNGE, CRUISE CONTROL IN UNUSABLE DUE TO CONSTANT GEAR HUNTING EVEN ON FLAT HIGHWAY, VEHICLE IS VERY UNSAFE IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC DUE TO HESITATION AND SURGING, AND MERGING INTO TRAFFIC AND BUSY HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY TRAVEL IS A NIGHTMARE. THE FOLLOWING BUSINESS DAY AFTER TAKING DELIVERY I BROUGHT TO DEALER WITH THE ABOVE COMPLAINTS AND WAS TOLD THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO LEAN MY DRIVING STYLE AND IT WOULD TAKE UP TO 5,000 MILES. AT ONE POINT DEALERSHIP SERVICE TECH, SERVICE ADVISER, AND SERVICE MANAGER ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEMS AND I WAS TOLD THAT TOYOTA WAS ALREADY AWARE AND WORKING ON A FLASH UPGRADE THAT THEY HOPED WOULD FIX. I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AND WAIT FOR THE FLASH. DEALERSHIP PERSONNEL NOW DENY ANY PROBLEMS. I FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA AND DEALER NOW REFUSES TO TRY AND FIX THE PROBLEMS. THIS MODEL IS BEING SHIPPED WITH VERY LOW TRANSMISSION FLUID ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE TECH WHICH IS CERTAIN TO DIMINISH THE LIFE OF THE TRANSMISSION. HE ALSO SAID THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER. I HAVE FILED A CLAIM FOR REPURCHASE BUT DEALERSHIP IS UNCOOPERATIVE AND TOYOTA REPORTS THAT AFTER REVIEWING MY CLAIM THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO VERIFY ANY OF MY CONCERNS. THERE ARE MANY OWNERS REPORTING TO BE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS AND TO DATE TOYOTA HAS DONE NOTHING TO RESOLVE THAT I AM AWARE OF.

WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE IN THE MORNING (30-40 DEG F) I LET THE TRUCK WARM UP UNTIL THE THE THERMOSTAT NEEDLE BEGINS TO MOVE. WHEN I PUT THE TRUCK INTO REVERSE THE ENGINE RPMS SURGE AND THEN A SECOND OR TWO LATER THE TRUCK WILL ENGAGE REVERSE AND THE TRUCK WILL OFTEN LURCH REARWARD UNEXPECTEDLY. WHEN PUT INTO DRIVE THE SAME THING HAPPENS. AFTER DRIVING A MILE I GET ON THE FREEWAY AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT SHIFT INTO TOP GEAR NO MATTER WHAT I DO AND THE VEHICLE SEEMS TO HAVE REDUCED POWER AS IT DOES NOT WANT TO MAINTAIN A SPEED GREATER THAN 60 MPH WITHOUT GREAT PROVOCATION. THE SPEED LIMIT IS 70 MPH SO THIS CAUSES A SAFETY CONCERN AS MY VEHICLE IS TRAVELING AT A MUCH LOWER SPEED THAN THE SURROUNDING TRAFFIC. THIS BEHAVIOR PERSISTS FOR APPROXIMATELY 4-5 MILES BEFORE RETURNING TO NORMAL OPERATION. EVEN WHEN IT IS INDICATED THAT THE ENGINE HAS REACHED OPTIMAL TEMPERATURE THE REDUCED POWER MODE AND ERRATIC TRANSMISSION BEHAVIOR PERSISTS.

FIRST INCIDENT OCCURED WHILE VEHICLE WAS STUCK IN LIGHT SNOW AND ICE CONDITION. 4-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM DID NOT APPEAR TO BE OPERATING PROPERLY. ENGAGED NEW "CRAWL-CONTROL" SYSTEM PER OWNER'S MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS. DURING USE OF CRAWL-CONTROL THE MOTOR RPM'S EXCEEDED 5,500; IMMEDIATELY PRESSED ENGINE-STOP BUTTON AND APPLIED BRAKES. INCIDENT RESULTED IN CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE OF FRONT DRIVE-LINE. DAMAGE INCLUDED FRONT DRIVE-SHAFT FAILURE; DEALER INDICATED "DRIVE-LINE" REPLACED. SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO COMPONENTS ADJACENT TO FRONT DRIVE-SHAFT. VEHICLE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. TWO DAYS AFTER SERVICE RANDOM BRAKE LOCK-UP OCCURS WHILE DRIVING; VEHICLE SKIDS OUT OF CONTROL. NO MALFUNCTION INDICATORS SHOWING. ABS ALSO DOES NOT ACTIVATE DURING PANIC STOP BRAKE APPLICATION. BRAKE LOCKUP EXPERIENCED IN WINTER CONDITIONS AT HIGH ELEVATION NEARLY CAUSING POTENTIALLY FATAL ACCIDENT (1,000FT DROP FROM ROAD TO CANYON BOTTOM, NO GUARD-RAILS). WHILE DRIVING AT 30MPH THE REAR END OF THE TRUCK BEGINS TO SLIDE SIDEWAYS. UPON COMING TO A STOP IT IS DISCOVERED THAT THE VEHICLE WILL NOT DRIVE FORWARD. ENGAGED 4-WHEEL DRIVE AND VEHICLE STRUGGLED TO MOVE. ENGAGED DIFFERENTIAL LOCK AND DROVE BACKWARDS FOR 80FT. WHEELS APPEAR TO BECOME UN-LOCKED. DRIVE FORWARD FOR ANOTHER 500 YARDS AND SAME SITUATION OCCURS.

WHILE BACKING UP ONTO STREET, WHEN SHIFTING FROM REVERSE TO DRIVE, THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT DELAY WITH NO MOVEMENT. WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC I WAS WORRIED WHETHER ON NOT IT WOULD ENGAGE AT ALL. COULD HAVE CAUSED A ACCIDENT.

TRANSMISSION SLIPS WHEN COLD OR AFTER THE TRUCK SITS FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. USUALLY ALWAYS OCCURS WHEN STARTING THE VEHICLE UP, REVERSING AND THEN GOING INTO DRIVE. THE TRANSMISSION HAS A PARTIAL ENGAGEMENT BUT ACCELERATION IS NOT AS INTENDED. IT WILL THEN "BANG" INTO TO GEAR AND GO. FEAR IS THAT IF YOU BACK OUT OF YOUR DRIVEWAY AND INTEND TO ACCELERATE, THE TRUCK MAY NOT MOVE AS INTENDED THUS CREATING A SAFETY HAZARD. FOR A NEW VEHICLE, THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY SLIPPAGE ONCE SHIFTED INTO DRIVE. YESTERDAY I HAD IT WHERE THE SLIPPING LASTED THREE SECONDS BEFORE IT FINALLY WENT FULLY INTO GEAR. MY TRUCK HAS 1650 MILES ON IT AND IT'S DONE THIS SINCE THE DAY IT WAS NEW. I WOULD SAY I'VE EXPERIENCED THIS AT LEAST 70+ TIMES DURING COLD STARTS AT HOME OR AT WORK. ALSO CONCERNED ABOUT THE WEAR ON THE TRANSMISSION'S INTERNALS DUE TO THIS PARTIAL ENGAGEMENT OF A FORWARD GEAR.

ON A COLD START, AFTER YOU PUT THE VEHICLE IN D (DRIVE) THERE IS UP TO A 7 SECOND DELAY ON ENGAGEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE ACCELERATOR CAN BE PRESSED AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT MOVE FOR UP TO 7 SECONDS LEAVING ME STRANDED FOR EXAMPLE IF I HAVE BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY TO THE STREET. ONCE I PLACE THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE ON A COLD START, I CANNOT MOVE FOR UP TO 7 SECONDS. THIS HAPPENS EVERY TIME ON A COLD START.
