The yoke assembly on rear driveshaft broke and the rear part of shaft fell to the ground while making a turn on paved road. I was about to back down an inclined boat ramp to put boat in river. The boat was an aluminum john boat, motor and trailer not weighing over 800 pounds. Vehicle and boat could have gone in river or the truck could have hit someone. The vehicle was towed and is being repaired by local repair shop. There were no warning lights or any unusual noise prior to the incident. The truck has 135,000 miles on the odometer. The shop were the repairs are being done said this was a common problem he has seen on many Toyota Tundras and not any particular year.

TAKATA RECALL 2006 TOYOTA TUNDRA SR5 4X4. PURCHASED ABOUT A YEAR AGO. POWER STEERING FAILED A COUPLE MONTHS IN WHILE DRIVING TO WORK. FOUND FLUID LEAKING I CRAWLED UNDERNEATH AND FOUNF THE ENTIRE FRME RUSTED AND BOTH ANTI ROLL BAR LINKS HAVE SEPARATED FROM CONTROL ARMS. THE BUSHINGS AND NUTS WERE MISSING AND THE POWERSTEERING LINK IS FROM ROTTED BOOT ON THE PASENGER SIDE.

THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL COVER PLATE IS LEAKING GEAR OIL. THE COVER PLATE IS FIXED IN PLACE NOT BOLTED ON. THE EXCESSIVE CORROSION OF THE ENTIRE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY IS THE PROBLEM. THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY. THERE IS AN EXISTING RECALL FOR TOYOTA TACOMAS SO I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY WILL NOT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM WITHOUT A RECALL INITIATED BY NHTSA. SHOULD THIS COVER PLATE TOTALLY FAIL WHILE ON THE HIGHWAY THE RESULTING IN LOSS OF CONTROL THE RESULTING ACCIDENT MAY CAUSE LOSS OF LIFE FOR THIS VEHICLE AND OTHER VEHICLES TRAVELING ON THE SAME HIGHWAY.

HAD TRUCK TOWED DUE TO BROKEN BRAKE LINE AND WAS ADVISED BY MECHANIC THAT FRAME WAS SEVERELY CORRODED WITH HOLES ABOVE FRONT WHEELS AND WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. REAR END ALSO SEVERELY CORRODED. CONTACTED TOYOTA DEALER, NO WARRANTY OR RECALL ON 2006 FRAMES ALTHOUGH TUNDRAS AND TACOMAS OLDER AND NEWER THAN 2006 ARE GETTING WARRANTIED FRAME REPLACEMENTS DUE TO RECALLS. DEALER WENT TO THE GARAGE THAT HAD TOWED THE TRUCK AND INSPECTED THE FRAME. DEALER ADVISED US TO GET HOLES IN FRAME FIXED AT OUR EXPENSE. DEALER VERIFIED THAT THERE WAS AN EARLIER RECALL TO SPRAY FRAMES, BUT THE SPRAY HAD LIMITED AVAILABILITY FROM TOYOTA AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO FULFILL THE RECALL WHEN WE BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO THEM FOR THIS SERVICE. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS 150,000 MILES ON IT AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVABLE FOR MANY MORE. WE LODGED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA USA ON 11/14/2018, COMPLAINT# 181 114 1536 AND ARE NEXT ENTERING A COMPLAINT WITH THE NH ATTORNEY GENERAL.

DROVE MY TRUCK ABOUT 200 MILES THAT DAY. PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY AND UNLOADED A FORMICA COUNTER TOP IN MY GARAGE THEN PULLED MY TRUCK TO IT'S NORMAL PARKING SPOT. WALKED BACK TO THE GARAGE AND SAW A RATHER LARGE GREASE SPOT. LOOKED AT THE REAR OF MY TRUCK AND THE REAR END HOUSING WAS LEAKING AROUND THE PUMPKIN AREA. TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC AND HE TOLD ME MY WHOLE REAR END HOUSING WAS RUSTED OUT AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. SINCE THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH THESE TRUCKS (FRAME WAS REPLACED A YEAR AGO) MY MECHANIC TOLD ME THERE ARE NO GOOD USED REAR ENDS TO BE FOUND AND IT WOULD REQUIRE A NEW REAR END HOUSING. IF TOYOTA HAD MADE A RECALL ON FRAME ISSUES, WHY HAVEN'T THEY DONE THE SAME WITH THE REAR END HOUSING. A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE REAR DRIVING TRAIN SEEMS TO ME WOULD BE A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE!!

TAMARA RECALL - I WAS EXITING THE FREEWAY, MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN ONTO THE CITY STREET, I WAS TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES PER HOUR. AS I ENTERED THE INTERSECTION, ON A GREEN LIGHT, A 1996 GMC YUKON RAN A RED LIGHT, TRAVELLING APPROXIMATELY 40 MILES AN HOUR AND HIT ME ON MY FRONT END, DAMAGING THE BUMPER, FENDER, DOOR, HOOD AND BED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. I WAS WEARING MY SEATBELT BUT THE IMPACT WAS HARD ENOUGH TO PROPELL ME UPWARDS, CAUSING MY LEFT SHOULDER TO HIT THE FRAME ABOVE THE WINDOW WHICH CAUSED A GRADE 3 SEPARATION OF MY LEFT COLLARBONE.

A 1992 FORD F-250 (2 DOOR) TOWING A PORTABLE CEMENT MIXER, ESTIMATED WEIGHT @350-450 POUNDS, CROSSED THE CENTER LINE AND STRUCK A 2006 TOYOTA TUNDRA CREW CAB (4 DOOR) HEAD ON. BOTH VEHICLES ESTIMATED SPEED WAS 50 MPH. ALL DRIVERS AND PASSENGER WERE WEARING SEAT BELTS, AIRBAGS DID DEPLOY. THE F-250'S DRIVER SUSTAINED 1 DETACHED RIB PLUS CUTS AND BRUISES. IN THE TOYOTA, THE FOLLOWING INJURIES OCCURRED: PASSENGER: BROKEN LEFT ANKLE, 7 BROKEN RIBS, STERNUM AND CLAVICLE FRACTURES, 7 INCH LEG LACERATION, 5 INCH HAND LACERATION, CUTS & BRUISES. DRIVER: BROKEN RIGHT ANKLE, BRAIN CONTUSION/CONCUSSION (VISIBLE IMPACT SPOT ON WINDSHIELD - SEE BELOW), BROKEN RIB, CUTS AND BRUISES. TOYOTA'S OCCUPANTS CONFIRMED THAT THE ENGINE/TRANSMISSION INTRUDED ABOUT 2 FEET INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT, CONSISTENT WITH THE ANKLE INJURIES. IT ALSO APPEARS FROM PHOTOS THAT THE WINDSHIELD WAS PUSHED BACK INTO THE DRIVER, ALTHOUGH THE BELT AND AIRBAG COULD HAVE NOT PROVIDED ADEQUATE PROTECTION ALSO. FRONTAL PHOTOS OF THE TOYOTA SHOW, APPARENTLY, THAT THE BODYWORK DETACHED FROM THE FRAME - THE FRONT OF THE FRAME IS CLEARLY VISIBLE & DOES NOT LOOK SERIOUSLY DAMAGED, WITH THE BODYWORK (INCLUDING THE BUMPER) PUSHED BACK SUBSTANTIALLY. IT SEEMS TO ME THERE ARE SEVERAL POSSIBLE DEFECT/DESIGN ISSUES HERE: 1. ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION CAME STRAIGHT BACK AND DID NOT DEFLECT DOWNWARDS, CAUSING THE LOWER EXTREMITY INJURIES. 2. MULTIPLE RIB INJURIES DESPITE OCCUPANTS BEING BELTED SUGGESTS EXCESSIVE AIRBAG INFLATION PRESSURE. 3. BODY TO FRAME ATTACHMENT FAILURE, EXACERBATING INTRUSION OF ENGINE AND FRONTAL COLLAPSE/COMPRESSION. TECH CAME OUT TO INFORM ME THERE WAS DISCOLORATION IN THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL FLUID AND I SHOULD HAVE THE FLUID CHANGED. I SAID OKAY. SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD 2 YEARS OF REAR END VIBRATION AND CHATTER IN MY FIRST DRIVE OF THE MORNING. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY UPON HEARING AND FEELING THE VIBRATION. THEY HAD ME BRING IT BACK AND THEY REPLACED THE FLUID AND PLACED AN ADDITIVE AND SAID IT SHOULD BE FINE. IT HAS NOT BEEN FINE AS THEY REPLACED THE FLUID A THIRD TIME AND LAST YEAR I HAD MIDAS LOOK AT THE PROBLEM AND THEY REPLACED THE FLUID. IT WAS OKAY FOR AWHILE BUT THE VIBRATION AND CHATTER IN MY TURNS HAS RETURNED WITH A VENGEANCE. DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT NORMAL SPEED OF 65 MPH; SUDDENLY I NOTICED AN INCREASE IN RPM'S AND A PULL OF THE TRUCK, KIND OF PULLING BACK AND FORTH. I THEN NOTICED THE O/D LIGHT ON, I WIGGLED THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WHILE DRIVING AND THE O/D LIGHT WENT AWAY; THE TRUCK RPM'S RETURNED TO NORMAL FOR THE SPEED I WAS DRIVING. SINCE THEN, IT HAS HAPPENED EVERY DAY AT ANY GIVEN TIME; WHAT I AM DOING IS THE SAME OR JUST PRESSING THE PUSH BUTTON UNTIL THE LIGHT GOES AWAY. I TRIED TAKING MY TRUCK TO MY LOCAL DEALER WHERE I BOUGHT MY TRUCK AND THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS A CHARGE FOR INSPECTION PLUS REPAIRS. I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHER ONLINE POSTS WHERE TUNDRA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, I BELIEVE THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM SINCE THE TRUCK MAY PULL OR HESITATE AT ANY GIVEN TIME AND THE POSSIBILITY OF LOSING CONTROL AND CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY EXISTS. SHE DEPRESSED THE BRAKES AND THE TACHOMETER INCREASED TO 2 AND WOULD NOT DECLINE. IN ADDITION, WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE AND RELEASED THE BRAKES, THE REAR TIRES BEGAN TO SPIN AND SHE CRASHED REAR-END INTO A BOULDER. THE REAR BUMPER WAS DAMAGED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE DEALER STATED THEY WERE ADVISED BY THE MANUFACTURER NOT TO DIAGNOSE THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAS HAD THREE TRANSMISSIONS SINCE PURCHASE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 53,000. UPDATED 11/9/10 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPLACED THREE TIMES. SHE ALSO STATED THERE WERE TIMES WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD JUST TAKE OFF AT A HIGH SPEED WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS TAPPED LIGHTLY. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED, THE ENGINE WOULD RACE EXTREMELY HIGH. THE HIGH IDLE WOULD ALSO EFFECT THE WAY THE VEHICLE SHIFTED INTO GEAR. UPDATED 11/12/10 THE DRIVERS SIDE HAS A GROMMET AND THE FLOOR BOARD HAS A GROMMET, BUT THERE IS NO HOOK TO HOLD THE FLOOR MAT IN PLACE. ALSO, THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES. TOYOTA TUNDRA 2006 DOUBLE CAB 4WD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. I WAS 4 WHEELING AND STOPPED BEHIND A POLARIS, BY APPROXIMATELY 5 FEET. I WAS IN DRIVE AND 4WD AND BRAKES APPLIED. I STOPPED BECAUSE THE POLARIS HAD STOPPED. ALL OF A SUDDEN WITH THE BRAKES APPLIED MY TUNDRA LUNGED FORWARD AT A VERY HIGH RPM CRASHING INTO THE POLARIS. AT THAT POINT I PUT THE TRANSMISSION INTO PARK AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. HAD I NOT RESPONDED WITH THE ACTION I TOOK I WOULD HAVE SHOVED THE POLARIS WITH 2 PEOPLE INTO A VERY DEEP WASH. NEEDLESS TO SAY THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF DAMAGE DONE TO MY TOYOTA. THE TOYOTA HAS MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END. HAD I NOT TAKEN THE ACTION THAT I DID, WE ALL WOULD HAVE ENDED UP IN THE DEEP WASH WITH MAJOR INJURIES. WHEN I ARRIVED HOME I IMMEDIATELY CALLED TIM'S TOYOTA IN PRESCOTT ARIZONA WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THE 2 PEOPLE THAT COULD HELP ME WITH THE SITUATION WERE NOT AVAILABLE SO A CALL TO THEM TOMORROW WILL BE IN ORDER. I HAVE NOT CONTACTED MY INSURANCE AS YET AS I FEEL THAT TOYOTA IS THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY FOR THE ACCIDENT. I HAD WRITTEN TO YOU QUITE A LONG TIME AGO REGARDING THE CRUISE CONTROL SURGING TO 5000 RPM'S WHEN APPROACHING EVEN A MINOR INCLINE. SO I DON'T USE IT ANYMORE. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY TRUCK INTO MY GARAGE FOR FEAR THAT THE TRUCK WILL LUNGE FORWARD, ONLY THIS TIME IT WILL CRASH INTO MY HVAC AND WATER HEATER, BOTH ARE ON PROPANE. *TR

I WAS DRIVING NORTH OUT OF PHOENIX ARIZONA ON I-17 JUST PAST BLACK CANYON CITY, WITH MY CRUISE CONTROL SET AT 75 MPH. THERE IS A VERY LONG HILL GOING NORTH TO SUNSET POINT. PRIOR TO APPROACHING THE HILL I CANCELED THE CRUISE SO THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULDN'T HUNT GEARS. I DROVE UP THE HILL AT 65 TO 75 MPH (NO CRUISE). WHEN I MADE THE TOP OF THE HILL AT SUNSET POINT AND LEVELED OUT, I ACCELERATED THE VEHICLE TO 75 MPH AND HIT RESUME. THE ENGINE RACED TO 5200 RPM. I REDLINE AT 5700 RPM. THE TRANSMISSION DID NOT FOLLOW SUITE. IT WAS AS IF I WAS IN NEUTRAL REVVING THE ENGINE. I IMMEDIATELY CANCELED THE CRUISE AND DROVE A MILE OR SO WITHOUT CRUISE, THEN DECIDED TO TRY IT AGAIN. EVERYTHING WORKED NORMAL. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH MY DEALERS SERVICE DEPT. AND THEY ARE BAFFLED. THEY HAVE NOT LOOKED AT IT AS YET DUE TO THEIR SCHEDULE. AS SOON AS THEY CAN GET ME IN THEY WILL. THEY DID SAY THAT THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, BUT THERE WAS NOT. THEY ARE HOPING THAT THE ONBOARD COMPUTER RECORDED IT. NOT ONLY IS THIS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD, BUT IT COULD HAVE CAUSED MY ENGINE TO BLOW UP. I'M NOT SURE WHAT REACTION MY WIFE WOULD HAVE HAD. SHE DRIVES ALL THE VEHICLES WE HAVE AND THEY BOTH HAVE CRUISE, YET SHE IS NOT THAT FAMILIAR WIT RPM'S AND REDLINES AND THE ISSUE THAT FOLLOW. WHEN I HAVE ALLOWED THE CRUISE TO PULL ME UP AN INCLINE IT USUALLY DROPS 1 OR TWO GEARS AND THE RPM'S ARE AROUND 3000 TO 3200. THIS I CONSIDER NORMAL. I HAD A 1999 TOYOTA TACOMA WITH A SIX CYLINDER ENGINE AND CRUISE, SO I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE SYSTEM. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM TIM'S TOYOTA IN PRESCOTT, I ALSO BROUGHT TO THEIR ATTENTION A NOISE THAT I HEARD IN THE RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION AND THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE CARE OF IT UNDER A NEW RECALL THAT HAS NOT EVEN BEEN SENT TO CUSTOMERS, NOR WAS THE SERVICE DEPT AWARE OF IT. *JB

DEFECTIVE 4 WHEEL DRIVE FROM FACTORY. TWO DAYS AFTER PURCHASE I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO USE THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE. I ATTEMPTED TO ENGAGE THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE AND IT WAS NOT OPERATING. I TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER AND IT WAS REPAIRED AFTER 6 DAYS IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. I WAS TOLD THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE ENGAGING UNIT WAS INSTALLED IMPROPERLY AT THE FACTORY CAUSING IT TO FAIL WHICH ALSO CAUSED THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT TO FAIL. BOTH UNITS WERE REPLACED. I ASKED THE DEALER WHY THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE UNIT WAS NOT TESTED BEFORE LEAVING THE FACTORY OR DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS SYSTEM IS NOT TESTED AT THE FACTORY OR DURING DEALER PREPARATION. *JB

FOR THE PAST FEW WEEKS OF DRIVING THE ABOVE REFERENCED VEHICLE I STARTED TO NOTICE A KNOCKING METAL SOUND UNDER THE CENTER CONSOLE WHEN ACCELERATING AND BRAKING... I TOOK NO IMMEDIATE ACTION AS I FOUND IT TO BE A VERY LIGHT SOUND. AFTER A FEW MORE DAYS OF DRIVING THE KNOCK BECAME MORE NOTICEABLE I WAS MORE ALARMED, WHEN I GOT HOME I GOT UNDER MY TRUCK WITH A FLASHLIGHT AND STARTED TO TAKE A LOOK AROUND, AFTER CAREFUL INSPECTION I FOUND THAT 3 OF 4 12MM HEX BOLTS ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION MOUNT/ CROSSMEMBER WERE MISSING FURTHER MORE THE CASE WAS THAT THE REAR TRANSMISSION MOUNT LOCATED NEAR THE DRIVESHAFT WERE LOOSE ENOUGH THAT COULD BE MOVED WITH MINIMAL STRENGTH WITH MY HAND I WAS ABLE TO RECOVER 1 BOLT THAT FELL INTO THE CROSSMEMBER ALONG WITH A PLASTIC RETAINER. I QUICKLY TIGHTENED THE LOOSE BOLTS AND REALIGNED THE MOUNT TOOK THE TRUCK OUT FOR A QUICK TEST DRIVE AND THE SOUND STOPPED TOTALLY, THE NEXT MORNING I CONTACTED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND PURCHASED 2 NEW HEX BOLTS THAT CAME OUT TO $ 3.40. AFTER THIS U CAN SAY THAT ALL IS NOW WELL, I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO AS THERE MAYBE OTHER SIMILAR UNITS OUT THERE WITH THE SAME ISSUE, THIS COULD CAUSE MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AND ALSO POSSIBLE INFLICT AN ACCIDENT. *NM

LTR FROM (TX) REPORTING PROBLEMS WITH HIS 2006 TUNDRA MOTOR VEHICLE. *TS THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS A PROBLEM DOWN SHIFTING 2 GEARS ON MINOR GRADE FOR NO REASON, WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE TO REV TO OVER 4000 RPMS. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO OVERDRIVE WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. THE BRAKE WILL FADE WHILE SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE STOPPING DISTANCE ON THE VEHICLE WAS MUCH LONGER THAN ANY OTHER VEHICLE THE CONSUMER HAD DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS GETTING VERY POOR GAS MILEAGE. THERE WAS AN ODOR FROM THE AIR CONDITION. THE TIRE SENSOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED, BUT IT WAS RESOLVED.
