TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE THE CONTACT'S HUSBAND WAS DRIVING 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE DRIVER DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE VEHICLE KEPT MOVING FORWARD. THE DRIVER HAD TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND SHIFT INTO PARK TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE DRIVER HAD TO DETACH THE BATTERY TO RESET THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA OF HOLLYWOOD (LOCATED AT 1841 FL-7, HOLLYWOOD, FL 33021, (866) 332-6839) WHERE IT WAS REPAIRED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 09V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL), 15V689000 (VISIBILITY), AND ANOTHER UNKNOWN RECALL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED AFTER LEAVING THE DEALER. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER ON DECEMBER 30, 2019 AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE MECHANIC FORGOT TO RESET THE SOFTWARE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. TURNED LEFT AT A GREEN LIGHT THEN TRUCK SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH COMING TO A SCHOOL ZONE WITH LIGHTS FLASHING AND BUSY ROAD AHEAD I SEEN PARKED BMW. THE TRUCK WAS NEW TO ME AND HAD SLAP SHIFTER SO WHEN I MOVED IT FOR NEUTRAL IT HAD TO BE PUSHED OVER AND UP. I JUST WENT OVER AND WITH LITTLE TIME AND BUSY INTERSECTION AND CHILDREN. I PICKED THE BMW THOUGHT GOOD CRASH RATING. SLAMMED THE OVER BMW AND KEPT GOING TIL STRUCK A POWER POLE BREAKING IT. THERE WAS WITNESS BEHIND ME STATED 'I WAS DRIVING NORMAL THEN SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND VIER LEFT.' I HIT THE BMW SQUARE WITH MY ARMS PROTECTING MY FACE WHICH IS EVIDENT FROM PICTURES.

WITHIN A YEAR OR TWO OF PURCHASING THIS 2010 TOYOTA TUNDRA I NOTICED ERRATIC AND UNPREDICTABLE ACCELERATION CHARACTERISTICS WHEN ACCELERATING TO PASS AND WHEN THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED GOING UP HILLS. THE SPEED WOULD INCREASE MORE THAN NECESSARY TO ACCOMPLISH THE TASK. I DECIDED THIS BEHAVIOR WAS A PERSONALITY TRAIT OF THE TUNDRA AS IT NEVER CAUSED AN UNSAFE SITUATION TO OCCUR. OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS I HAVE NOTICED A HESITATION OF ACCELERATION FROM STOPPED. I CAN DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE ENGINE SOUNDS LIKE IT WANTS TO GO BUT ACCELERATION IS VERY LETHARGIC. RESPONSE TO ACCELERATOR PEDAL DEPRESSION IS UNPREDICTABLE IN THAT AT INTERMITTENT TIMES IT JUST DOES NOT CAUSE MUCH ACCELERATION. THE TENDENCY IS TO THEN PRESS FURTHER DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THEN THE TRUCK WILL EVENTUALLY TAKE OFF RATHER FAST. I HAVE NOT YET VISITED MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS BUT I DO INTEND TO. I BELIEVE THAT THE ACCELERATION ISSUE IN THE TOYOTA TUNDRA IS PERPLEXING AND DANGEROUS. SOMEBODY IS GOING TO BE SERIOUSLY HURT BECAUSE OF IT. I AM AMAZED THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT BEEN HELD ACCOUNTABLE. IN SLOW MOVING TRAFFIC, REPETITIVE LIGHT GAS AND LIGHT BRAKING. NOTICED THE BRAKE BECOMING DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS. HAD MY LEFT FOOT STATIONARY ON THE FOOT PAD, RIGHT FOOT OVER THE BRAKE WHILE ROLLING FORWARD. A SUDDEN ACCELERATION OF ENGINE RPM WAS EXPERIENCED WITH THE TRANSMISSION IN PARK AND THE ENGINE IDLING. WITHOUT TOUCHING ACCELERATOR PEDAL, ENGINE RPMS INCREASED TO 3500 TO 4000 FOR 8-10 SECONDS BEFORE RETURNING TO TYPICAL IDLING SPEED ENGINE WOULD NOT SUBSEQUENTLY RESPOND TO DEPRESSION OF ACCELERATOR PEDAL. TOYOTA REPAIR SHOP HAS DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS THROTTLE BODY STUCK OPEN. ALTHOUGH NOBODY WAS INJURED OR KILLED IN THIS INCIDENT, THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY LESS SERIOUS. MY CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED AND WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH AND I HAD TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL BECAUSE OF TRAFFIC.THE BUTTON POPPED OUT AND THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS STILL ENGAGED. IT HAPPENS MAINLY WHEN IT HAS BEEN SITTING ALL DAY. IT'S KIND OF SCARY BECAUSE WHEN YOU ARE PULLING OUT OF A PARKING LOT OR MAKING A LEFT HAND TURN THE TRUCK WILL ALL OF A SUDDEN HAVE NO POWER AND THEN IT WILL JOLT FORWARD. I HAVE NOT TAKEN IT TO THE DEALER BECAUSE NO INDICATOR LIGHTS ARE COMING ON AND THAT'S USUALLY THE ONLY WAY THEY KNOW HOW TO FIX PROBLEMS. I HAVE READ A FEW FORUMS THAT TALK ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, ONE GUY SAID HE HAD HIS TRUCK IN AND OUT OF THE DEALER FOR 4 MONTHS AND THEY BASICALLY RIPPED HIS WHOLE TRUCK APART. THEY FINALLY CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE WIRE HARNESS UNDER THE DASH THAT GOES TO THE FUEL PUMP WAS LOOSE AND CAUSING THE PROBLEM. I CALLED TOYOTA AND THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HAVE NOT HAD ENOUGH COMPLAINTS YET BUT WHEN THEY DO THEY WILL PROBABLY COME OUT WITH A FIX. WAS DRIVING TO WORK FROM READING, MA TO CHARLESTOWN, MA (ABOUT 13 MILES) ON TUESDAY, MARCH 23. IT WAS A RAINY DAY AND TRAFFIC WAS HEAVY. I HAD THE DEFROSTER AND WIPERS ON AND WAS STUCK IN TRAFFIC ON A BUSY MAIN STREET ABOUT 10 MILES INTO THE TRIP. THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME STARTED TO MOVE FORWARD SLOWLY SO I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE TO ALSO MOVE FORWARD SLOWLY. THAT OTHER CAR WAS ABOUT 10 FEET IN FRONT OF ME. I BARELY TOUCHED THE GAS PEDAL WHEN THE TRUCK TOOK OFF AT FULL ACCELERATION. I GOT ON THE BRAKE AS HEAVY AS I COULD AND THE TRUCK FISH TAILED SIDE TO SIDE. I QUICKLY PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL AND THEN PARK WHILE THE TRUCK WAS STILL REVVING AT FULL ACCELERATION. WHILE IT WAS IN PARK AND ENGINE STILL GOING FULL SPEED I TAPPED THE GAS PEDAL WITH MY FOOT AND IT RELEASED. I WAS VERY LUCKY I DIDN'T CRASH INTO ANYTHING. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE REQUIRED FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WITH THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,162. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 6,240.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED ACCORDINGLY PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V017000, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, ACCELERATOR PEDAL. A FEW DAYS LATER, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO DRIVE IN REVERSE, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED BACKWARDS AND PRECEDED TO CRASH INTO A TREE. THERE WAS MINOR DAMAGE TO THE FRONT BUMPER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS POTENTIALLY DUE TO DRIVER ERROR AND THAT HE POSSIBLY HAD DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSTEAD OF THE BRAKES. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED WITH OPERATING AN UNSAFE VEHICLE AS IT WAS HER ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 2,100.

THE DATE BELOW IS APPROXIMATE, I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE AND IT TOOK OFF SMASHING MY REAR BUMPER WHICH I PAID TO FIX. I JUST THANK GOD THAT WAS NOT A CHILD BEHIND MY CAR. SINCE THEN THERE HAVE BEEN TOO MANY INCIDENTS TO COUNTS WITH THE ACCELERATOR STICKING. CALLED TOYOTA BOTH DEALERSHIP AND COMPANY AND WAS TOLD MY TRUCK HAS BEEN FIXED. I AM HERE TO TELL YOU IT HAS NOT BEEN FIXED. THE MORE MILES I PUT ON THE CAR THE MORE FREQUENTLY THIS HAPPENS. HI, I'M NOT SURE HOW TO ADDRESS THIS BUT I THINK SOMEONE SHOULD KNOW. THIS COMPLAINT IS SOMEWHAT ON BEHALF OF A CHP OFFICER AND FAMILY THAT DIED AND THE MANY OTHERS OUT THERE LIKE MYSELF, FRIENDS AND FAMILY THAT HAVE TOYOTAS. I TEST CARS FOR THE CALIFORNIA SMOG CHECK PROGRAM. I HAVE TESTED THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES BOTH BY DRIVING THEM ON A SENSITIVE DYNAMOMETER AT VARIOUS SPEEDS AND IN PLACE AT DIFFERENT MOTOR RPMS. WHEN TOYOTA CHANGED TO AN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL ON THEIR VEHICLES IT BECAME VERY NOTICEABLE DURING THE SMOG TESTS AS THE VEHICLE ACCELERATION AND CONTROL WAS MORE SLOPPY THAN THE PREVIOUS DIRECT CABLE METHOD. I WORRIED ABOUT THIS BECAUSE WITH NO DIRECT LINKAGE AND ONLY SENSORS TO INTERPRET YOUR INTENDED ACCELERATION, IT COULD LEAD TO TRAGIC RESULTS WITHOUT PROPER FAIL-SAFES INSTALLED. ONE NECESSARY FAIL-SAFE IS WHEN YOU PRESS ON THE BRAKES THE ENGINE NEEDS TO SLOW TO PREVENT POTENTIALLY OVERRIDING THE BRAKES OR CREATE EXCESSIVE STOPPING DISTANCES. THIS WOULD PREVENT MANY ACCIDENTS. IT IS WELL KNOWN IN THE AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR INDUSTRY THAT VOLTAGE PROBLEMS, ELECTRICAL GROUND PROBLEMS, OR A MALFUNCTIONING MAIN COMPUTER OR POORLY WRITTEN CODE, WILL CAUSE OTHER SENSORS TO BEHAVE ERRATICALLY EVEN IF THE SPECIFIC AFFECTED SENSOR IS NOT DAMAGED. VEHICLE SENSORS HAVE PROBLEMS NOW AND THEN ALONG WITH CORRUPTED INFORMATION BEING SENT TO THOSE SENSORS RESULTING IN UNINTENDED RESULTS. THE SENSORS / LINKAGE INVOLVED IN TOYOTA'S ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL ARE NOT IMMUNE TO THESE PROBLEMS AS TOYOTA SUGGESTS. A MANDATORY FAIL-SAFE NEEDS TO BE ADOPTED ON TOYOTAS TO OVERRIDE A POTENTIALLY FAULTY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE. ACCELERATION COMPLAINTS HAVE RISEN SHARPLY SINCE THE NEW THROTTLE SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED. THE DIFFICULTY WITH TESTING A SENSOR SYSTEM IS THAT OFTEN IT CAN APPEAR TO BE FUNCTIONING FINE UNTIL THE MOMENT IT MISBEHAVES OR IT CAN ACT NORMAL WHILE GOOD INFORMATION IS RECEIVED AND THEN WITH CORRUPTED INFORMATION IT BEHAVES APART FROM DRIVER'S INTENTIONS. *TR
PROBLEM WITH CRUISE CONTROL NOT DISENGAGING PROPERLY WHEN TAPPING THE BRAKE. THE BRAKE MUST BE PRESSED TO THE POINT OF ACTUAL BRAKING FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL TO DISENGAGE. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL TIMES WHEN WHILE TRYING TO DISENGAGE BY PRESSING THE BRAKE THE ENGINE STARTED TO REV UP AS IF I WAS ALSO PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL. THE MOST RELIABLE WAS TO DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL IS THE CONTROL ON THE SIDE OF THE STEERING WHEEL (MAIN CRUISE CONTROL ON MY TRUCK). WILL BE TAKING THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER THIS WEEK. *TR
