I am reporting a failure by Volkswagen Group of America to provide a safe and timely remedy for Safety Recall 23V-215. Per the manufacturer's notice, the front passenger seat is unsafe for use until repaired. I physically surrendered my vehicle to Merced VW on Dec 29, 2025, due to this grounding safety risk. However, both the dealership and VW Corporate (Case #07228209) have refused to provide a comparable 7-passenger loaner or a direct-bill rental, despite this being my family's primary transportation for three children. VW Corporate has denied reimbursement, citing a '3-hour' labor time, while ignoring the actual grounding period caused by parts backorders. I am currently forced to pay out-of-pocket for a rental to ensure my family's safety because the manufacturer has failed to provide the mandated no-charge remedy or safe alternative transportation.
Waiting at a stoplight for light to turn green. Driver’s side door airbag deployed for no reason and the car shut down completely. Except for my hazard lights and a blinking message that read “error driver door contact switch”. Had to have it tow and the tow truck driver couldn’t even put in neutral.
Air bag system in passenger seat quit working. Has been inspected by dealer.

I have called the VW dealer several times to have the recall problem fixed and they keep telling me they don’t have the parts. This is lingering for months. How do I get it fixed if there’s no cooperation from dealer? I don’t remember the month I was notified but it was months ago.

Unknown- manufacturer still has not found a remedy for the seatbelt air bag issue and it’s been a year since they announced it
Manufacturer has no resolution for this issue. I contacted dealership and manufacturer for resolution as my vehicle is unable to be used in the manner in which is intended and was told that they have no resolution for me. It has been a year with no communication or resolution.

Please it’s been almost a year with no resolution from Volkswagen. It’s insane!
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the delay in the repair of a recall affecting my 2018 Volkswagen Atlas SEL. The recall (Manufacturer Recall Number 69FB, NHTSA Recall Number 23V215) was issued on March 29th, 2023, due to a fault in the Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS), which may result in the passenger airbag being switched off erroneously. This poses an increased risk of injury to the front passenger in the event of a crash. Despite having attempted to schedule an appointment with my local Volkswagen dealership from which I bought this vehicle in August of 2023, I was informed that there was no remedy yet available, and to this day almost a full year later there is still no repair that has been made available within a reasonable timeframe. Any attempt to contact Volkswagen directly for any updates has produced no useful information, and their only solution at this time is to advise owners of affected vehicles not to have anyone ride in the front passenger seat. This delay in resolving the safety issue poses a significant risk to both myself and the other approximately 140,000 Volkswagen Atlas owners affected by this recall. As a responsible vehicle owner, I am deeply troubled by the apparent lack of urgency in addressing this matter. It is also very frustrating to not safely have full use of a vehicle that I have paid for, and continue to pay for. I urge the NHTSA to intervene and expedite the repair process to ensure the safety of all affected vehicles on the road. I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to a swift resolution.

I am experiencing issues related to the airbag sensor recall as the sensor does not know if someone is in the seat or not - it thinks someone is there when they aren't, and vice versa. This recall was announced in April of 2023, and since then, I have been unable to have any passengers ride in my front seat. Needless to say this is not only very inconvenient but also impacts my ability to trade in or sell this vehicle.

It has been almost 1 year since this airbag recall and no resolution. VW advises to “discontinue use of the front passenger seat”. This is ridiculous and unacceptable. I purchased this 7 passenger vehicle to transport my family including grandkids. I cannot do that with out the front passenger seat. I want a 7 passenger loaner or for VW to refund my purchase of this vehicle. There has not yet been a crash.

There is an active recall that has been going on for many months, possibly years, with failure of the front passenger airbag to deploy. There is STILL no fix. When will you light a fire under VW to hold it accountable for a timely fix that is well past-due?

I purchased this vehicle in August of last year (2023), where I was made aware that the vehicle had a recall, however there was no mention that there was no fix for the recall. Thinking that the recall fix was available I have been reaching out to the dealer to schedule an appointment to bring the car in, however I keep getting that there is still no fix and there is no timeframe on when it will become available.
Around May 2023, I received a passenger airbag safety recall for my Volkswagen Atlas. The letter states that the Passenger Occupancy Detection System (PODS) is faulty and that in the event of an accident, the passenger airbag would likely not work. They said that no one can sit in the passenger seat until this recall is fixed. The issue is that they have no way to repair it, no set time of when it will be repairable and have offered no type of solution or compensation in the meantime. I can no longer use my vehicle for rideshare to make money so my income is being affected, apps like Turo and Uber have told me that after running the VIN on my vehicle and seeing this outstanding recall, I can not use my car for their services. Not only that but it makes it extremely difficult to transport my family since the seat cannot be used. I can't in my right conscience sell the vehicle and potentially be responsible for another family to suffer an injury due to this recall so I am stuck and need a solution to this problem sooner than later. I have talked to others facing these same issues.

There has been an airbag recall on my 2018 VW Atlas since March of 2023 with no remedy from the manufacturer even though it’s been almost a year. Manufacturer has advised that passengers should not use the front passenger seat until a remedy is available. I have not been able to have someone ride in my front passenger seat for almost a year with no advice or remedy from VW. Vehicle has been in dealership to try to fix this 3-4 times but fix has not worked.
There has been no notification of action being taken by Volkswagen to correct the problem regarding NHTSA recall number 23V215 with recall date March 29, 2023. We were notified of this recall by Volkswagen in May of 2023. Volkswagen has failed to remedy this issue in a timely manner. VW dealership will not take vehicle on trade in because value is zero.

The vehicle is a 2018 VW Atlas SE w/Tech 2.0T FWD. The manufacturer recall number is 69FB. The NHTSA recall number is 23V215. The recall status is incomplete because a remedy is not yet available. I have called several VW dealerships and they are all saying there is no remedy identified yet for this. This has been a known issue since April 2023. It has now been 8 months. How long does a manufacturer have to NOT remedy a SAFETY situation?

No use of the airbags in the front passenger seat in my atlas it makes it soo that my seven seater is really a 6 seater that doesn’t have a front passenger seat it’s unbelievable
My vehicle was recalled 3/29/23, and no attempt has been made to fix the problem. At this time, the dealer has no remedy. I do not have full use of my vehicle as the manufacturer suggests that no one ride in the front passenger seat due to the potential fault in the system. The extended wait to have a fix for the problem is unacceptable. No dealership will want to purchase this car with the current recall so I am stuck. The NHTSA should immediately do something about this manufacturer recall. VW should be made to repair the problem ASAP and pay for the loss of the full use of the vehicle.

The mechanic stated that the air conditioner drain had leaked inside the vehicle and onto the front passenger’s side carpet; the air bag sensor was replaced. Despite the repair, the carpet still retained moisture and the foul odor had remained inside the vehicle. Upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V537000 (Air Bags). It is unreasonable that the safety recall on the airbags has not yet been resolved. The recall was issued in April 2023 and there is still no resolution coming. For passengers, this is a critical safety hazard.
I am writing in to complain about the recall associated with the passenger airbag for VW Atlas for which I received no information from the manufacturer or from my local VW dealer. The amount of time that this serious safety-related recall has been open is completely unsatisfactory. What is being done to resolve the situation?

It has been 6 months since NHTSA 23V215 recall notice was issued and VW has not issued a fix. That is too long, since someone sitting in the passenger seat is at increased risk for injury.

Passenger Occupant Detection System to detect a malfunction and switch off the passenger airbag, even though the seat may be occupied. In a crash with frontal airbag deployment, there would be an increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger seat if the passenger frontal airbag is switched off or not working. Our airbag warning light, comes on and off. This happens sporadically whether the passenger seat is occupied or not. an error message displayed in the instrument cluster and by the status of the Passenger Airbag OFF indicator light. There is not a fix for this per the local dealership and when contacting Volkswagon directly. How is advising people not to use the front seat in their car the only option? This is not always possible for us.
I am experiencing the airbag issue described in the recall campaign. The passenger seat airbag warning light goes off constantly. Current "solution" is to not use the passenger seat until a repair can be made... however it has been nearly 6 months without any updates.

How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? We utilize all seats in our Volkswagen Atlas since we have a large family. We are being told that we no longer should allow a front passenger to sit in the passenger seat due to the airbag no longer deploying. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. We called VW Dealership in Melbourne, Florida on 6/28 and they confirmed that the vehicle had a recall on the airbag. No one has been injured but this poses a significant safety risk to our family.

Recall requested on VW Atlas 2017 with statement not to use front seat, but we only have 1 car. How are we to proceed as a family? Recall remedy stated as not being available. Manufacturer Recall Number69FB NHTSA Recall Number23V215
The Passenger Air Bag light comes on at random times, even when sitting in seat. It says the airbag detection system may be faulty and the airbag may not deploy when needed. There is a recall for some Volkswagen's but not mine. This light has been coming on for 2 years and it sounds like the recall but since my VIN number is not in the recall, I cannot get it fixed. I believe this may be the same problem as can be life threatening in an accident or another time. I would like Volkswagen to check and fix this under the recall that was made in 4/2023. Please help if you can.

Airbag error light
Inspected vehicle ac system due to foul odor. In pulling back the passenger seat footwell panel I checked for ac drain blockage around the evaporator system. Drain tube was clean/clear but there was quite a bit of puddling around the airbag module located directly under the ac system. This is a known issue with the VW Atlas but my VIN was not included in the recall.
AIRBAG Caution comes on in 2018 VW Atlas and passenger airbag off light flashes and stays on. AIRBAG Caution stays on and then goes off intermittently. Matches gripe for 69AL Recall for 2018 VW Atlas.
Front left tire hit curb (25-30 mph) flattening tire and deploying all side curtain airbags while driving. No damage to the body of the vehicle. The Atlas was towed to VW dealership. We requested an investigation of the issue and the vehicle has remained at the dealership over a month now. Two years prior (2019) Atlas was serviced for airbag error indicator light staying on. No safety issue was noted and a new sensor was ordered for replacement. Did not receive notice of appointment if/when the replacement part was delivered to dealership.
2018 VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS. CONSUMER STATED THAT THERE IS WATER IN THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOORBOARD. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE CONDENSATION DRAIN TUBE THAT WAS CONNECTED TO THE A/C EVAPORATOR COIL WAS TWISTED AT THE DRAIN PAN. THIS CAUSED THE WATER TO POOL UNDER THE FLOORBOARDS. THE CONSUMER WAS CONCERNED THE AIR BAG WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER REFERENCED RECALL 87F9.
My 2018 VW Atlas came from the factory with the A/C condensation drain tube twisted. This is a known issue with almost 9700 2018 VW atlas vehicles. A safety recall was issued to replace the drain hose and the air bag module. Somehow my car was missed and the dealer and Volkswagen does not want to acknowledge the issue and replace the air bag module. The manufacture recall number is 87F9 the NHTSA recall number is 18V-537. The recall states that if the drain tube is twisted it and the module are to be replaced. I am trying to find out why my atlas was not listed in the recall. It appears to be in the VIN range listed on the recall.

CAR INDICATING AIR BAG PROBLEMS. SAYING AIR BAG ERROR.
AIRBAG ERROR MESSAGE ON DASHBOARD/LIGHT ILLUMINATED. 2018 VW ATLAS 20K MILES
WHILE DRIVING ON AT LEAST 10-12 OCCASIONS AS OF TODAY, 1/28/20, THE ERROR:AIRBAG MESSAGE HAS POPPED UP ON OUR SCREEN BEHIND STEERING WHEEL BOTH WITH A PASSENGER PRESENT AND WITHOUT. THEN THE LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD INDICATES THAT BOTH AIRBAGS ARE TURNED OFF. ALSO, THERE APPEARS TO BE AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE WITH THE DRIVERS VISOR LIGHT. IT WILL TURN ON WHEN YOU MOVE THE MIRROR SLIGHTLY BUT IF YOU OPEN THE MIRROR ALL THE WAY IT BLINKS A FEW TIMES THEN TURNS OFF.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HIS WIFE WAS DRIVING AT 45 MPH, SHE HAD HIT A STORM DRAIN ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHICH CAUSED ALL SIDE CURTAIN AND PASSENGER AIR BAGS TO DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF AS THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE POLICE WERE CALLED AND A POLICE REPORT (#20S000488) WAS FILED. NO MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS GIVEN AT THE SCENE; THE DRIVER SUFFERED MINOR SCRATCHES AND BRUISES CAUSE BY THE SEAT BELT. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO MIKE STEVEN VOLKSWAGEN (11211 E KELLOGG DR N, WICHITA, KS 67207) FOR AN INVESTIGATION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND PULLED THE COMPUTER DATA FROM THE VEHICLE. DATA SHOWED THAT A AIR BAG SENSOR WAS ACTIVATED WHICH DEEMED THE CONTACT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND REMAINED IN THE POSSESSION OF THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 31,000. *LN *TR

WHEN RIDING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT THE AIR BAG WOULD DISENGAGE AND ENGAGE AS THE PERSON MOVED IN THE SEAT WITH THE MOVEMENT OF THE CAR. MOVED THE SEAT BACK AND IT WENT OFF, DEALERSHIP MECHANIC COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. LAST HAPPENED THIS MORNING, STARTED AFTER A FEW SECONDS OF GRINDING, THEN WENT 12 MPH, SHUT DOWN, THEN STARTED FINE. HAD THE VEHICLE FOR 14 MONTHS THE BATTERY WENT DEAD, WHEN PUSHING THE START BUTTON IT WOULD CATCH AND CONTINUE TO TRY STARTING EVEN WHEN THE FINGER WAS REMOVED. WHEN IT STARTED EPC WOULD COME UP AND THE VEHICLE WOULD MOVE AT ABOUT 12 MPH. SHUT THE VEHICLE DOWN AND START AGAIN, IT WOULD RUN OK. HAVE HAD IT INTO REPAIRS TWICE AND NOTHING IS FOUND, YET IT CONTINUES TO START OR NOT START AND RUN SLOW. WARNING COMES UP CHECK RUNNING LIGHT, CHECK RIGHT HEADLIGHT, CHECK LEFT HEADLIGHT. REPLACED THE BATTERY TWO MONTHS AGO, HAVE ALREADY HAD TO CHARGE BECAUSE IT HAS GONE DEAD. IT IS LIKE THE COMPUTER PANEL IS NOT TURNING OFF. THE VEHICLE HAS ALWAYS BEEN STOPPED - PARKED WHEN IT WILL NOT START, SOMETIMES FOR A FEW MINUTES SOME TIMES OVER NIGHT AFTER HAVING TO USE THE FOG LIGHTS. I HAVE ALL THE RECALLS FIXED, BUT THIS STARTED AFTER HAVING THOSE FIXED. MY BATTERY WAS REPLACED AFTER 45,000 MILES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2018 VOLKSWAGEN ATLAS. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE SLID ONTO A CURB, CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAGS AND THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG ERRONEOUSLY DEPLOYED. ALSO, THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BELTS WERE DAMAGED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A BODY SHOP. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. HAWK VOLKSWAGEN (2861 WEST JEFFERSON ST, JOLIET, IL) AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,000. *TT *TR

THERE HAVE BEEN SEVEN RECALLS ON THE 2018 ATLAS LAUNCH EDITION. COOK VW IN FALLSTON HAS REFUSED TO REPAIR AT LEAST 5 RECALLS. IT'S BEEN MONTHS AND THEY HAVEN'T REPAIRED ANYTHING. WE TOOK FAITH IN THESE PEOPLE AND THEY COULD CARE LESS FOR MY FAMILY'S SAFETY. TODAY WE GOT A RECALL LETTER ABOUT THE IGNITION. THAT MAKES 6 RECALLS THEY WILL NOT FIX. MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. DON'T HAVE DATES BUT THEY SHOULD BE IN THE DATABASE AT THIS DEALERSHIP. THEY ALL HAPPENED IN 2018.
RECALL 20AH IS COMPLETELY UNNACEPTABLE. THERE ARE 8 DIFFERENT POSSIBLE REPAIRS THAT FALL UNDER THIS RECALL. THESE REPAIRS RANGE FROM AIRBAG SOFTWARE UPDATES TO SUNROOF REPAIRS. HOW IS IT LEGAL FOR THEM TO COMBINE THESE REPAIRS? AS A MECHANIC AND A CONSUMER IT IS BAD FOR BUSINESS AS THE VARIOUS PARTS/ INSPECTIONS NECCESSARY MAKE IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCOMODATE THE REPAIRS.
PURCHASED NEW 2018 ATLAS AT HEROG MEIER VW DEALERSHIP IN BEAVERTON OREGON ON 5-19-18. UPON DRIVING HOME FROM DEALERSHIP THE AIRBAG ERROR LIGHT CAME ON AND WOULD NOT GO OUT. CALLED DEALER ONCE HOME AND IMMEDIATELY DROVE BACK TO DEALER. THEY SAID TO DRIVE IT AND COME BACK MONDAY TO SERVICE DEPARTMENT. CAR HAS BEEN UNDER THREE ATTEMPTED REPAIRS SINCE THEN WITH LOCAL DEALER TECHNICIANS AND EVEN REGIONAL MID LEVEL TECHNICIAN CALLING THEM TO WALK THROUGH REPAIRS OVER PHONE. STILL NO FIX AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE CAUSE IS. IT IS NOW GOING ON ALMOST THREE WEEKS AND I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY CAR. TURNS OUT THROUGH QUESTIONING SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT THIS AIRBAG ISSUE CAME UP PRIOR TO THEM SELLING US CAR AS TECHNICIAN MENTIONED THAT WIRING HARNESS FOR AIRBAG WAS REPLACED PREVIOUSLY? THIS WAS SOLD TO US AS A NEW CAR BUT IN REALITY WE WERE SOLD A DEFECTIVE CAR WITH AIRBAG ISSUES. STILL NO RESOLUTION. VERY UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS AS TECHNICIAN SAID UNSAFE TO DRIVE THE CAR AS AIRBAGS CAN FAIL.

MY WIFE SLID INTO A CURB DURING A LEFT-HAND TURN INTO OUR NEIGHBORHOOD DUE TO ICE. SHE DAMAGED THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND A COUPLE MECHANICS, SCRATCHING THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL AS WELL. THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO ANY OTHER PART OF THE EXTERIOR; HOWEVER, THIS CURB IMPACT SET OFF ALL OF THE INTERIOR SIDE AIRBAGS, INCLUDING ONE SEAT AIRBAG. MY WIFE RECEIVED MINOR PAIN FROM AIRBAG IMPACT BUT THANKFULLY MY CHILDREN WERE NOT IN THE CAR BECAUSE A SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED DIRECTLY INSIDE MY CHILD'S HEAD RESTRAINT. IN THE WORDS OF THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER, AND THE SERVICE TECHNICIANS AT MULTIPLE DEALERS AND BODY SHOPS, THEY HAVE NEVER SEEN AIRBAGS DEPLOY LIKE THIS DUE TO AN IMPACT WITH A CURB, WITH SO LITTLE DAMAGE AS WELL. TOTAL COST TO REPAIR AROUND $10K, RESALE VALUE DROPPED 20% ACCORDING TO DEALER QUOTE, AS AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT IS ON CARFAX. IT HAS BEEN THREE MONTHS AND VW HAS YET TO MANUFACTURE THE SEAT BELTS AND SEAT COVER FOR REPLACEMENT. WE HAVE BEEN WITHOUT THE CAR ALL THIS TIME AND IT COULD BE SEVERAL MORE MONTHS BEFORE WE EVEN GET A TRUE TIMELINE...ALL DUE TO AN IMPACT WITH A CURB. TO MAKE THINGS MORE INTERESTING, THERE IS ANOTHER ATLAS WHO ALSO SLID INTO A CURB DUE TO ICE DURING THE SAME STORM, ONLY DAMAGE TO WHEELS, AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, AND THEY ARE STILL WITHOUT THEIR CAR AS WELL, THREE MONTHS LATER. VW SUPPORT REFUSES TO RELEASE REPORT THAT DICTATES THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED PROPERLY, STATING IT'S NORMAL AND THEREFORE OUR FAULT. CONSIDERING THE OBVIOUS AND THE TESTIMONIES OF AUTO BODY SPECIALISTS, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH AIRBAG SENSORS.

SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED ON PASSENGER SIDE TIRES HIT CUBS...NO DIRECT DAMAGE WHAT SO EVER TO CAR JUST RIMS. AN ONCOMING CAR WAS COMING TOO CLOSE TO ME. :30 SECONDS LATER (RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY GATED COMMUNITY), EVERY SINGLE AIR BAG DEPLOYED EXCEPT FRONT AND PASSENGER AIR BAGS. THE CAR IS MOTION :30 AFTER INTERACTION WITH CURB WHEN THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. IT WAS IN A NEIGHBORHOOD IN FRESNO 93711 (FIR STREET)
