The contact owns a 2009 Volkswagen GTI. The contact stated while driving 35-40 MPH, the ABS warning light, traction control warning light, and the brake warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 16V913000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic, Electronic Stability Control). Upon reprogramming the ABS module, the dealer informed the contact the ABS module failed the diagnostic test and needed to be replaced; however, the dealer informed the contact that he had to pay for the repair even though the recall remedy stated that the ABS module replacement was free of charge. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,000.

VEHICLE HAS A RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE, I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE VW OF MURIETTA CALIFORNIA DEALER TO GET THE RECALL TAKEN CARE OF ON 1/11/20 AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THEY ASSUMED THAT THE MODULE HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE AND THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE CONTACTED VW OF AMERICA TO CLEAR THE RECALL IN THE SYSTEM. THEN ON 4/10/20 I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE SAME DEALER FOR AN UNRELATED ISSUE AND MENTIONED THE STILL ACTIVE RECALL, THEY THEN PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT THE MODULE WAS UNABLE TO BE UPDATED AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY AN ESTIMATE OF $1800 TO FIX THE RECALL. ON 4/16/20 I CALLED VW OF AMERICA TO WHICH THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT VW OF MURRIETA DID NOT HAVE AN OPEN CLAIM WITH THEM ABOUT MY VEHICLE. *TR

MY CAR WAS AFFECTED BY THE 2017 RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE. I WAS DRIVING AROUND A CORNER AND HIT BRAKES TO SLOW A LITTLE, THE ABS/TRACTION CONTROL/STEERING LIGHT(S) CAME ON AND MY BRAKES LOCKED MOMENTARILY CAUSE ME TO SLIDE. I CALLED LOCAL DEALER TO HAVE THE RECALL PERFORMED. THE DEALER STATED(AND VW AMERICA) THAT BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO PULL CODES FROM THE MODULE I WOULD NEED TO PAY TO REPLACE IT MYSELF AND THEN THEY COULD PERFORM THE RECALL. A NUMBER OF WARNING LIGHTS COME ON WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED ON AND SOUND ALARMS COME ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE STEERING WHEEL MOVES ON ITS OWN AT TIMES AND THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT WORK. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL VW DEALER LOCATED IN COUNTRYSIDE IL (AUTOBARN) KNOWING THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON THE ABS SYSTEM. THE DEALER EXPLAINED THAT THE ABS MODULE WAS NOT WORKING AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT ($2,400) PARTS AND LABOR AND THAT THE RECALL DID NOT COVER WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PART.

WHEN THE ELECTRIC STEERING LIGHT IS ORANGE THE STEERING ASSISTANCE IS REDUCED WHEN STRAIGHTENING AFTER CORNERING, HOWEVER WHEN IT IS RED THERE IS NO POWER ASSISTANCE AND THIS CONDITION CAN HAPPEN AT ANY SPEED AND AT ANYTIME WITHOUT WARNING. NOW YESTERDAY(7/14/2019) WHEN DRIVING AT 40MPH IN A STRAIGHT LINE IN THE DRY, THE ENGINE FAIL! WORKSHOP NOW!, ESP,EPC, ELECTRO STEERING, CEL AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON ACCOMPANIED BY A CHIME AND THE SPEEDO WENT FROM 40 TO 0 AND BACK UP AGAIN WHILE IN MOTION. QUITE DISCONCERTING TO HAVE ALL THAT HAPPEN AT ONCE. AFTER ALL THE LIGHTS WENT OUT THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO BE OK UNTIL I ATTEMPTED TO PULL OUT OF A GAS STATION AT WHICH TIME WITH THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AND THE REVS WENT UP BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT MOVE UNTIL THE THIRD ATTEMPT. I HAVE READ ON LINE THAT THIS MAYBE A RESULT OF AN ABS MODULE FAILURE BUT MY VIN DOESN'T PULL UP ANY RECALLS AND MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. NOT ONLY DOES THIS SOUND LIKE IT WILL BE AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR, IT IS ALSO A HUGH SAFETY ISSUE! MOST RECENTLY, THERE IS A RECALL ON THE ABS MODULES ON CERTAIN VW VEHICLES; HOWEVER MY CAR WAS NOT ONE OF THEM EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE SAME PART THAT ALMOST CAUSED ME A CAR CRASH ON THE HIGHWAY! PLEASE INVESTIGATE INTO THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE THE VW OFFICIALLY EXTEND THEIR QUALIFICATION FOR RECALLS. WHAT I CANNOT UNDERSTAND IS HOW MY FRIEND GOT A RECALL KETTER AND I DID NOT (WE HAVE THE SAME EXACT CARS).. THE CAR'S SPEEDOMETER AND FUEL GUAGE STOPPED WORKING. AFTER THE CAR WAS RESTARTED MOST OF THE ERRORS WENT AWAY BUT HAVE SINCE REAPPEARED. BASED ON THE NUMBER OF POSTS I'M FINDING ONLINE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDE-SPREAD PROBLEM WITH THE 09'S.
ABS WARNING LIGHT STARTED COMING ON. THEN A WARNING LIGHT THAT THE RIGHT, REAR TURN SIGNAL HAD FAILED. ONE WEEK LATER THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD IS COVERED IN WARNING LIGHTS, INCLUDING A "FAULTY ENGINE WORKSHOP" WARNING LIGHT. IT APPEARS THAT ABS CONTROL MODULE HAS FAILED, LEAVING ME WITH NO ABS BRAKING ON A WELL MAINTAINED, 50K MILE CAR. THIS SEEMS TO BE RAMPANT PROBLEM WITH THE TSI MKV GTI AT THIS MILEAGE. VW OF AMERICA OFFERED ME NO ASSISTANCE. VW SHOULD RECALL THIS PART BEFORE THEY SEE ANY ACCIDENTS LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURIES.

I WAS TRAVELING EAST IN THE RIGHT LANE ON INTERSTATE 44 AT APPROXIMATELY 0645 IN THE AM. IT WAS NORMAL HEAVY MORNING WORK TRAFFIC GOING INTO OKLAHOMA CITY, TRAVELING THE POSTED SPEED OF 70 MPH. I WAS FOLLOWING A FULL SIZE PICKUP TRUCK AND MODERATE TRAFFIC WAS PASSING ME ON MY LEFT. WITHOUT NOTICE, TRAFFIC SUDDENLY SLOWED TO APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, CAUSING ME TO HIT MY BRAKES HARD. THE ABS SYSTEM ENGAGED AND MY CAR WAS THROWN SIDEWAYS OFF THE ROAD AT APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH. I PULLED THE CAR BACK LEFT, CAUSING VEHICLES IN THE LEFT LANE TO SWERVE TO MISS HITTING ME. THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON MY CAR, INDICATING A FAILURE HOWEVER, A DUMMY COULD FIGURE OUT THE BRAKES WERE NOT WORKING. I WAS DRIVING AROUND A TURN AT ROUGHLY 60MPH ON A HIGHWAY OFF-RAMP DURING DRY CONDITIONS WHEN THE DASHBOARD CHIMED AND SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. BOTH THE ESP AND ABS LIGHTS LIT AND REMAINED LIT CONTINUOUSLY, AND THE BRAKE LIGHT BEGAN TO BLINK CONTINUOUSLY. THE CAR STILL DROVE NORMALLY, SO I CONTINUED TO DRIVE ANOTHER FIVE MINUTES TO MY HOME. UPON TURNING OFF THE IGNITION COMPLETELY AND RESTARTING THE CAR, ALL THREE INDICATOR LIGHTS WERE CLEARED. THIS SAME INCIDENT OCCURRED ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS OVER THE FOLLOWING MONTHS, DURING SNOWY/ICY CONDITIONS. ON ANY SLIPPERY ROAD SURFACE DURING HEAVY BRAKING, THE THREE INDICATOR LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE AND THE DASH WOULD CHIME. THIS FAULT WAS ALWAYS CLEARED BY SIMPLY RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THE ABS SYSTEM NEVER FUNCTIONED PROPERLY; THE BRAKES WOULD SIMPLY LOCK UP WHEN THIS FAULT OCCURRED. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER TO HAVE A PROPER DIAGNOSES COMPLETED, AT WHICH POINT IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ABS MODULE WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIR COST WAS ESTIMATED AT $1700.00. I CONTACTED VW'S CORPORATE NORTH AMERICAN OFFICE SEVERAL TIMES THROUGH PHONE CALL AND MAIL, AND I WAS DENIED COVERAGE OR PAYMENT ASSISTANCE, AS THE VEHICLE WAS BEYOND THE BUMPER-TO-BUMPER WARRANTY. I DECIDED NOT TO WORRY ABOUT THE PROBLEM UNTIL THIS WINTER, BUT LAST WEEK I HAD THE FAULT OCCUR AGAIN WHEN DRIVING AT ABOUT 55MPH ON A WET ROADWAY AND HITTING MY BRAKES HARD TO AVOID A DEER THAT RAN ACROSS THE ROAD. I WAS FORTUNATE TO MISS THE DEER, BUT THE BRAKES LOCKED UP AND THE REAR-END OF THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLIDE AROUND BEFORE I LET OFF THE BRAKES. ON 8/8/2014, I TURNED ON MY CAR TO GO WORK. ONCE I TURNED ON THE IGNITION/ENGINE, ALL WARNING LIGHTS (POWER STEERING, ENGINE, ELECTRONICS, ABS, ESP AND BRAKING) CAME ON OR FLASHING. SINCE THAT VW DEALERSHIP WAS NOT ABLE TO GIVE ME A PRECISE DIAGNOSIS WITHOUT REPAIRING RANDOM PARTS OF MY CAR AND HAD ME PAID FOR IT, I TOOK THE CAR TO ANOTHER VW DEALERSHIP IN DANVERS MA. AFTER HOURS OF DIAGNOSIS, I GOT THE SAME RESULT THAT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE IS AT FAULT. I HAD THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE ABS CONTROL MODULE AND PAID THOUSANDS FOR THE REPAIR. NOW THE CAR IS RUNNING FINE. WHEN I STARTED IT THE NEXT DAY, THE LIGHTS WERE BACK ON, BUT I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT TO WORK, BASED ON WHAT THE MECHANIC HAD TOLD ME. ABOUT A MILE DOWN THE ROAD, THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING, AND THE CAR THEN BEGAN TO CHANGE GEARS AT RANDOM, WHICH PRESENTED AN ALL NEW SAFETY RISK. AT THIS POINT I ALSO LOST POWER STEERING. THE ISSUE STARTED AGAIN IN MAY, AND THE DEALER DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE ABS SENSOR FAULTS WERE RELATED. I STARTED TO GET THE WINTER BLINKING LIGHT FAULTS AGAIN. I PAID OUT OF POCKET $600 FOR THE PART, AND ABOUT $500 FOR LABOR TO GET THE REVISED MODULE INSTALLED, WHICH I SAW WAS THE PROPER FIX OTHER DEALERS WERE DOING FOR PEOPLE STILL UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
