I recently purchased this used car and discovered that there is a recall on it. I made an appointment for the recall service. Prior to the appointment, the ABS warning light came on while driving the car. I took the car to University Volkswagen. They charged me for a diagnostic on the ABS system and have advised that the ABS module needs to be replaced and that I must have that done, before they can address the recall. I asked the service advisor if the issues with the ABS system were due to the recall issue, and he told me it was difficult to say. I escalated the issue, and they still tell me that I have to pay $3000 to replace the ABS module before they can do the recall work. It seems that if the ABS failure is due to the recall, that it should not be up to me to pay for the ABS module so that they can test the ABS module. Can you please help me with this situation, or advise me what steps to take next?

SOME VINS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER A RECALL EVEN THOUGH IT USES THE SAME ABS SYSTEM AND ABS MODULE THAT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BE DEFECTIVE. ALL VINS THAT USE THIS ABS MODULE SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL AS THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE VEHICLE PULLED TO THE RIGHT WITH AN ABNORMAL VIBRATION FELT IN THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V913000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC, ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO YOUNG VOLKSWAGEN LOCATED AT 191 COMMERCE PARK DR, EASTON, PA 18045, (610) 991-9100, HOWEVER, THE RECALL REPAIR WAS NOT PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS ALSO TAKEN TO CIOCCA VOLKSWAGEN OF ALLENTOWN LOCATED AT 1346 LEHIGH ST, ALLENTOWN, PA 18103, (610) 890-7050, WHERE AN UNKNOWN SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS PERFORMED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 90,000.

VEHICLE HAS A RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE, I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE VW OF MURIETTA CALIFORNIA DEALER TO GET THE RECALL TAKEN CARE OF ON 1/11/20 AND THEY CLAIMED THAT THEY ASSUMED THAT THE MODULE HAD ALREADY BEEN DONE AND THEY CLAIMED TO HAVE CONTACTED VW OF AMERICA TO CLEAR THE RECALL IN THE SYSTEM. THEN ON 4/10/20 I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE SAME DEALER FOR AN UNRELATED ISSUE AND MENTIONED THE STILL ACTIVE RECALL, THEY THEN PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT THE MODULE WAS UNABLE TO BE UPDATED AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY AN ESTIMATE OF $1800 TO FIX THE RECALL. ON 4/16/20 I CALLED VW OF AMERICA TO WHICH THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT VW OF MURRIETA DID NOT HAVE AN OPEN CLAIM WITH THEM ABOUT MY VEHICLE. *TR

MY CAR WAS AFFECTED BY THE 2017 RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE. I WAS DRIVING AROUND A CORNER AND HIT BRAKES TO SLOW A LITTLE, THE ABS/TRACTION CONTROL/STEERING LIGHT(S) CAME ON AND MY BRAKES LOCKED MOMENTARILY CAUSE ME TO SLIDE. I CALLED LOCAL DEALER TO HAVE THE RECALL PERFORMED. THE DEALER STATED(AND VW AMERICA) THAT BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO PULL CODES FROM THE MODULE I WOULD NEED TO PAY TO REPLACE IT MYSELF AND THEN THEY COULD PERFORM THE RECALL. THIS IS COMPLETE AND UTTER STUPIDITY. THE MODULE WAS RECALLED DUE TO FAILURES. THEY SHOULD COVER THE COMPLETE COST TO REPLACE AND RECODE. A NUMBER OF WARNING LIGHTS COME ON WHEN THE CAR IS TURNED ON AND SOUND ALARMS COME ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE STEERING WHEEL MOVES ON ITS OWN AT TIMES AND THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT WORK. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL VW DEALER LOCATED IN COUNTRYSIDE IL (AUTOBARN) KNOWING THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON THE ABS SYSTEM. THE DEALER EXPLAINED THAT THE ABS MODULE WAS NOT WORKING AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT ($2,400) PARTS AND LABOR AND THAT THE RECALL DID NOT COVER WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PART.

THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED FOR ALL VW VEHICLES WITH ABS CONTROL MODULE ISSUES, NOT JUST SOME. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF VW AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SPECIFIC FAULT I THREW WAS NOT COVERED (UNDER EXISTING RECALLS) EVEN THOUGH ALL ABS CONTROL MODULE ISSUES RESULT IN EVENTUAL FAILURE OF DASH CLUSTER AS WELL AS OBVIOUS SAFETY CONCERNS (WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED RESULTING IN ONGOING COSTLY SHOP VISITS).

AFTER A COUPLE OF DAYS, THE DEALER REFUSED TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIRS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS SHOWING THE INCORRECT FAILURE CODES. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A SECOND RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL AND WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES STARTED GRINDING AND TWITCHING AND THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED. IN ADDITION, THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING, THE STEERING BECAME LOOSE, AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING AFTER THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS INITIALLY DEPRESSED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SAME DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE REPAIRS WOULD BE COVERED; HOWEVER, THEY LATER CALLED THE CONTACT BACK STATING THE RECALL REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COVERED. THE INCORRECT FAILURE CODES WERE VAG00290 (DRIVER'S SIDE REAR ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WITH MECHANICAL FUNCTION) AND VAG00285 (PASSENGER SIDE FRONT ABS SPEED SENSOR). THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE DEALER THAT THE RECALL HAD TO MATCH TWO OF THE SPECIFIC CODES, WHICH WAS WHY THE RECALL REPAIRS WERE NOT PERFORMED. THE CONTACT WAS INSTRUCTED TO CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THEY WOULD CONTACT THE DEALER. THE CONTACT RECEIVED THE RUN AROUND FOR A WEEK WITH BOTH THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER, STATING THEY WERE WAITING TO HEAR FROM EACH OTHER. RECENTLY, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE RECALL REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE PERFORMED AND THE CONTACT MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.

MY VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION SLOWING DOWN TO A RED LIGHT WHEN THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BREAK LIGHTS CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. I RAN DIAGNOSTICS AND ALL 4 ABS SENSORS FAILED. THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM WITH THE GROUNDING CONNECTION OR THE ENTIRE ABS MODULE IS FAULTY. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE THE CAR MAY THINK THE TIRES ARE SKIDDING ON DRY PAVEMENT, COMPUTE A FALSE POSITIVE, AND CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIP FOR ALMOST TWO WEEKS AND I WAS PROVIDED NO LOANER CAR IN THE MEAN TIME. I RESEARCHED MY VIN WHEN I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND AN INCOMPLETE SAFETY RECALL ON THE ABS MODULE. THAT RECALL NUMBER IS 16V913. BEFORE I COULD TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT THE ABS MODULE FAILED. THE VOLKSWAGEN DEALER IN TACOMA, WASHINGTON CHARGED ME A DIAGNOSTIC FEE BECAUSE THE MODULE FAILED COMMUNICATION, IN WHICH THEY FOUND THE MODULE DID INDEED FAIL, BUT THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE IT BECAUSE THEY CLAIM IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY OR THE RECALL. THEY SUBMITTED A SECONDARY CLAIM TO VW OF AMERICA TO TRY TO HAVE THEM APPROVE THE CLAIM WHICH WAS ALSO DENIED. I AM REACHING OUT TO HOPEFULLY GET HELP WITH GETTING MY VEHICLE FIXED AND ONCE AGAIN SAFE TO DRIVE. ATTACHED WILL BE A COPY OF THE INVOICE FROM THE DEALER AND THEIR FINDINGS.

I WAS JUST DRIVING NORMALLY. IF I TOUCHED THEM AT ALL, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN LIGHTLY,.THE CAR WOULD START FINE BUT NO GEARS. TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. THEIR REPORT SAID "SMALL METAL SHARDS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A GRAIN OF SAND" IN THE TRANS FLUID, AND "IT APPEARS THE TRANSMISSION COMMUTER DID NOT DISENGAGE THE CLUTCH IN USE AS IT ENGAGED THE CLUTCH FOR THE NEXT GEAR AND TRIED RUNNING THE VEHICLE IN TWO GEARS AT THE SAME TIME AT CRUISING SPEED., WHICH IN TURN DAMAGED THE TRANSMISSION INTERNALLY AND DESTROYED THE DUAL CLUTCH FRICTION DISCS." I RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE ABS MODULE ON MY VEHICLE. ANOTHER DRIVER (NHTSA ID 10944646) INDICATED THAT WHEN HIS ABS MODULE FAILED, THAT HIS VEHICLE RANDOMLY DOWNSHIFTS TO FIRST GEAR, AND IS UNABLE TO SWITCH BACK. HE SAID "WHAT STARTS AS A SIMPLE BRAKE PROBLEM IS NOW AN UNDRIVEABLE CAR". IS THIS WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR? COULD MY ABS MODULE FAILURE CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO DOWNSHIFT WHILE TRAVELLING AT 45 MPH? SHOULD THE TRANSMISSION REPAIR BE INCLUDED IN THE ABS RECALL PROGRAM? THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND I HAD NO WARNING BEFORE IT HAPPENED. ALSO, IT WAS VERY HOT OUT, ABOUT 90 DEGREES, IF TEMPERATURE PLAYS A ROLE IN THIS SITUATION. I AM MAKING AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE ABS ISSUE REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL, BUT VOLKSWAGON IS TAKING NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE. THEY SAID IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. I THINK THEY MAY BE RELATED, AND CUSTOMERS NEED TO KNOW IF THIS IS A POSSIBILITY.

I HAVE JUST STARTED TO ENCOUNTER PROBLEMS WITH MY ABS MODULE. I RECEIVED A RECALL ON THE MODULE AND TOOK IT IN TO AN AUTHORIZED VOLKSWAGEN DEALER ASAP. LEFT THE CAR WITH THEM FOR A DAY IN HOPE TO RECEIVE NEWS THAT THEY WERE GOING TO ORDER MY MODULE AND HAVE IT COMPLETED IN A FEW DAYS. I WAS WRONG. THEY CALLED ME AND CLAIMED THAT IT WAS NOT GOING TO BE COVERED IN THE RECALL. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW SOMETHING SO CRITICAL TO THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE ON THE ROAD WILL NOT BE REPLACED, EVEN WHEN THERE IS A RECALL ON THE PART. MY CAR ABSOLUTELY FREAKS OUT WHILE DRIVING. I LOSE MY SPEEDOMETER, MY STEERING IS NOT AS RESPONSIVE AS IT SHOULD BE AND MY DASH CLUSTER FREAKS OUT. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO SO MANY 09 VW VEHICLES, YET I'VE READ SO MANY FORUMS AND HAVE TALKED TO SO MANY OTHER 09 VW OWNERS WHO SAID THEIR CARS "DID NOT QUALIFY" FOR THIS RECALL AS WELL. THE DEALER QUOTED ME 1,300 TO FIX THIS ISSUE. I'M LOST AT WORDS ON HOW I HAVE A RECALL ON AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM WHICH IS A MANUFACTURE ERROR AND I HAVE TO PAY 1,300 TO REPLACE IT OR GOOD LUCK WITH WHATEVER ACCIDENT YOU MANY GET IN. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON FREEWAYS, CITY STREETS, AND THE SCARIEST PART IS COMING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN WHICH I HAVE TO DRIVE 5 DAYS OUT OF THE WEEK FOR WORK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, BUT THE MANUFACTURER DENIED THE RECALL REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE ABS, ESC, AND BRAKE LIGHTS TURN OFF AFTER THE CAR IS RESTARTED BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. I HAVE TRIED BRAKING HARD ON WET PAVEMENT AFTERWARDS TO TEST THE ISSUE AND THE ABS, ESC, AND BRAKE LIGHTS TURN ON AGAIN WHEN THE ABS IS SUPPOSED TO ENGAGE. NEXT I SLID AGAIN, WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED AND HIT A CURB, $1500 DAMAGE TO MY CAR. VW AGAIN HAS REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE BRAKE PUMP FAILURE. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ON GTI BLOGS, VW CARES TWITTER ACCOUNT. IN SOME CASES VW HAS PAID FOR HAVE CONSUMER VEHICLE FIXED, BUT IN MY CASE THEY DENIED TWICE. I'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE ROUGHLY SIX OR SEVEN MONTHS AND UNDER HARD BRAKING, SHARP TURNS/MANEUVERS OR QUICK ACCELERATION I WOULD RANDOMLY GET THE ABS, TRACTION CONTROL AND FLASHING E-BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED IN MY GAUGE CLUSTER. THESE WARNING LIGHTS WOULD STAY ON UNTIL THE IGNITION WAS SWITCHED OFF AND WHEN THE CAR WAS RESTARTED WOULD GO AWAY. WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK YESTERDAY, NOW WITH 62,000 MILES, I APPLIED THE BRAKES WHILE GOING 45-50 MILES AN HOUR. THE CAR THAT WAS A GOOD 6 CAR LENGTHS IN FRONT OF ME HAD SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES SO I HAD AMPLE ROOM TO COME TO A STOP. AFTER APPLYING THE BRAKES ALL OF MY WHEELS LOCKED UP AND MY CAR BEGAN TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL OFF THE ROAD. AFTER SPINNING TWICE MY CAR CAME TO REST ON THE SHOULDER FACING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE CAR CAME TO REST NOT MORE THAN A FOOT FROM A 30 OR 40 FOOT STEEP UNGUARDED GRADE. HAD THE CAR GONE ANY FURTHER I MIGHT HAVE BEEN SEVERELY INJURED, OR WORSE, KILLED. THE SAME LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED ON THE GAUGE CLUSTER. AFTER GATHERING MY NERVE AND DRIVING HOME I PARKED THE CAR IN MY DRIVE WAY. TURNED IT OFF AND TURNED IT BACK ON. AGAIN, ALL THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE GONE. I DID SOME ONLINE RESEARCH AND FOUND NUMEROUS ACCOUNTS OF THIS ISSUE INDICATIVE OF THE 2009 MODEL YEAR VW'S BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. VW CUSTOMER SERVICE STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT COVER ANY COSTS WHICH I REJECT AS I FEEL THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY THE HEFTY FEE OF REPLACING AND RECODING THE ABS MODULE AS IT SHOULDN'T HAVE FAILED TO BEGIN WITH.

I WAS DRIVING UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS ON DRY CITY STREET AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, WHEN SUDDENLY A LOUD WARNING TONE WENT OFF AND 3 WARNING LIGHTS (ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BRAKE) STARTED FLASHING. THIS WAS IN HEAVY TWO-WAY TRAFFIC AND IT WAS TERRIFYING TO THINK THESE SYSTEMS HAD FAILED. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND STOP SAFELY. THE WARNING LIGHTS CONTINUED FLASHING UNTIL I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. WHEN I RESTARTED THE ENGINE, THE WARNING LIGHTS WERE NO LONGER LIT, SO I THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN SOME TYPE OF FLUKE. BUT TO BE SAFE I BROUGHT IT TO MY VW DEALER SERVICE CENTER. INITIALLY THEY DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS THE DSG MECHATRONIC UNIT, WHICH THEY REPLACED. HOWEVER SHORTLY AFTER GETTING THE CAR BACK, THE SAME SYMPTOMS OCCURRED AGAIN UNDER NORMAL DRIVING. THIS TIME WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO VW THEY INDICATED THAT THE ABS MODULE AND PUMP NEED TO BE REPLACED, AT THE COST OF $3,600. VW REFUSES TO COVER THE COST OF REPAIR. ON ANY SLIPPERY ROAD SURFACE DURING HEAVY BRAKING, THE THREE INDICATOR LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE AND THE DASH WOULD CHIME. THIS FAULT WAS ALWAYS CLEARED BY SIMPLY RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THE ABS SYSTEM NEVER FUNCTIONED PROPERLY; THE BRAKES WOULD SIMPLY LOCK UP WHEN THIS FAULT OCCURRED. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER TO HAVE A PROPER DIAGNOSES COMPLETED, AT WHICH POINT IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ABS MODULE WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIR COST WAS ESTIMATED AT $1700.00. I CONTACTED VW'S CORPORATE NORTH AMERICAN OFFICE SEVERAL TIMES THROUGH PHONE CALL AND MAIL, AND I WAS DENIED COVERAGE OR PAYMENT ASSISTANCE, AS THE VEHICLE WAS BEYOND THE BUMPER-TO-BUMPER WARRANTY. I DECIDED NOT TO WORRY ABOUT THE PROBLEM UNTIL THIS WINTER, BUT LAST WEEK I HAD THE FAULT OCCUR AGAIN WHEN DRIVING AT ABOUT 55MPH ON A WET ROADWAY AND HITTING MY BRAKES HARD TO AVOID A DEER THAT RAN ACROSS THE ROAD. I DIDN'T WORRY UNTIL THE NEXT MORNING WHEN ON MY HOME AFTER A 12 HOUR NIGHT SHIFT WHEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN, THIS TIME I WAS MOVING AND TRYING TO SLOW DOWN ON ICE AFTER THE NIGHT OF SNOW, AS SOON AS I HIT THE BRAKE THE DASHBOARD LIT UP AGAIN, CAUSING ME TO SLIDE INTO A CURB, ALMOST HITTING ANOTHER CAR. I THEN DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND IT TO BE A FAULTY OR BAD ABS CONTROL MODULE, I THEN TOOK MY CAR INTO VW A FEW WEEKS LATER TO GET SERVICED FOR THE ISSUE, AND THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. I HAVE SINCE SHIPPED THE CAR TO SPAIN WHILE I AM HERE FOR A COUPLE YEARS AND HAVE REPRODUCED THE PROBLEM WITHOUT ICE, SNOW, OR EVEN WATER, TWICE IN A WEEK PERIOD. NOW SINCE MY CAR IS NOT COVERED UNDER A CERTIFIED PRE OWNED WARRANTY WHILE IN SPAIN I WILL HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO GET IT FIXED, SOMETHING THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY ISSUE! WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE AFTER IT HAD SAT FOR A WEEK WITHOUT STARTING, WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED FOR ABS, TRACTION CONTROL, AND BRAKES. I DROVE IT AROUND THE BLOCK TO TEST THINGS OUT, AND THINGS SEEMED TO BE RUNNING PRETTY MUCH LIKE NORMAL, SO I DROVE IT TO A MECHANIC. THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTIC, AND 8 CODES CAME UP, ALL HAVING TO DO WITH THE ABS SYSTEM. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ABS CONTROL MODULE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. I DIDN'T WANT TO DO THE REPAIRS AT THAT MECHANIC, SO THEY TOLD ME I COULD DRIVE THE CAR, BUT THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE ABS OR TRACTION CONTROL. UPON DRIVING IT A FEW MILES, THE LIGHTS TURNED OFF, AND EVERYTHING WAS FUNCTIONING AS NORMAL. WHEN I STARTED IT THE NEXT DAY, THE LIGHTS WERE BACK ON, BUT I DECIDED TO DRIVE IT TO WORK, BASED ON WHAT THE MECHANIC HAD TOLD ME. ABOUT A MILE DOWN THE ROAD, THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING, AND THE CAR THEN BEGAN TO CHANGE GEARS AT RANDOM, WHICH PRESENTED AN ALL NEW SAFETY RISK. AT THIS POINT I ALSO LOST POWER STEERING. I MANAGED TO PULL OVER AND TURN OFF THE CAR. WHEN I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN, JUST THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON, SO I DECIDED TO DRIVE HOME, CONSIDERING I WAS ONLY ABOUT A MILE AWAY. EVERYTHING WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY ON THAT DRIVE. MY COMPLAINT MOSTLY HAS TO DO WITH THE ABS CONTROL MODULE, AS IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A RELATIVELY COMMON ISSUE FOR THIS MODEL YEAR, AND IT DEFINITELY PUTS PEOPLE AT RISK, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS AFFECTING OTHER SYSTEMS, AS WELL. *TR

ABS CONTROL MODULE FAILS, CAUSING ESP AND ABS SYSTEM TO BE DISABLED UNTIL IGNITION IS RESTARTED. HAPPENED OVER A DOZEN TIMES DURING THE WINTER. FAULT IS NOTICEABLE BY BLINKING LIGHTS THAT DO NOT TURN OFF UNTIL IGNITION IS RESTARTED. I WOULD USUALLY DO THIS WHILE ROLLING ON THE HIGHWAY, WHICH IS NOT DIFFICULT WITH A MANUAL. DEALER FIXED THIS SAYING IT WAS A WIRING ISSUE BY CLEANING THE MODULE AND RE-ATTACHING IT IN THE SPRING FOR FREE. THE ISSUE STARTED AGAIN IN MAY, AND THE DEALER DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE ABS SENSOR FAULTS WERE RELATED. I STARTED TO GET THE WINTER BLINKING LIGHT FAULTS AGAIN. I PAID OUT OF POCKET $600 FOR THE PART, AND ABOUT $500 FOR LABOR TO GET THE REVISED MODULE INSTALLED, WHICH I SAW WAS THE PROPER FIX OTHER DEALERS WERE DOING FOR PEOPLE STILL UNDER WARRANTY. *TR

SEVERAL 2009 GTI OWNERS ARE REPORTING THAT THEY ARE HAVING ISSUES WITH THE ABS CONTROL MODULE.
