My car been fine and went to take my daughter to school and shut the car off and get back in to go home and wouldn't start and the Abs light came on and Check Engine light as well. I am concerned because I think since I have done the ABS no longer then 2 years. I feel like there is a problem and dont think VW fix it the first time when I took it in.. My fiance had a terrible accident 12 month ago and no income and I dont know how we are going to fix it if we have too thats what I am worried about as well.. Thank you, Dawn
WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 65MPH, INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATED STOP! OIL PRESSURE ENGINE OFF! AND CAR WENT INTO LIMP. WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF VEHICLE AND PULLED OVER TO SIDE OF EXIT. VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED FROM HIGHWAY TO REPAIR SHOP. DIAGNOSED TO BE A FAILURE IN THE HEX DRIVE BIT FROM THE BALANCE SHAFT MODULE TO THE OIL PUMP. ALSO CAUSED TURBOCHARGER FAILURE DUE TO LACK OF OIL FLOW. CAR HAS BEEN MAINTAINED TO REQUIRED SCHEDULE AND HAD NO PRIOR INDICATIONS OF IMMINENT FAILURE.

3 WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING MY PRE-OWNED VEHICLE IN MAY 2019, SMOKE STARTED POURING OUT OF THE ENGINE ON MY WAY TO WORK. I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO A SHOP AND WAS TOLD THE CAUSE OF THE ISSUE WAS BROKEN ENGINE HOSE CLAMPS. THE SHOP CHARGED ME ALMOST $700 FOR BRAND NEW HOSE ASSEMBLIES AND CLAMPS. ALSO, MY TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING INTERMITTENTLY AND I DO NOT FEEL SAFE DRIVING THIS VEHICLE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILED AND MOST OF THE WARNING INDICATORS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED. IN ADDITION, THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL WAS FAULTY. THE VEHICLE LEAKED FUEL AND THE POWER STEERING WAS FAULTY. THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM CONSTANTLY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO CROWN VOLKSWAGEN OF LAWRENCE (3400 IOWA ST, LAWRENCE, KS 66046, (785) 838-7750) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE INTERNAL MODULE IN THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 148,376.

DOING 70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY OUR 2009 JETTA TDI LOST ALL POWER. THE HIGH INJECTION FUEL PUMP TURNED OUT TO BE THE PROBLEM. REPAIRS WILL COST AT LEAST $6,000.00 VW MODIFIED THIS PUMP 5 DIFFERENT TIMES AND NEVER NOTIFIED THE OWNERS ABOUT PROBLEMS WITH THE PUMP. THE NHTSA HAD AN INVESTIGATION AND CONCLUDED PEOPLE WERE USING THE WRONG FUEL. WE HAVE 2 DIESEL VEHICLES AND KNOW WHICH PUMP AT THE SERVICE STATIONS ARE DIESEL. THIS IS A SERIOUS LIFE THREATENING PROBLEM, CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND NO POWER IN YOU CAR YET THE NHTSA CLOSED THEIR INVESTIGATION. VW WILL DO NOTHING TO HELP WITH REPAIRS AND THE JETTA HAS BECOME A TOTAL LEMON. WE HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL RECALL NOTICES THROUGH THE YEARS, NONE REGARDING THE FUEL PUMP, AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALLS EACH TIME. WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOMETHING DONE ABOUT THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM.

TAKATA RECALL. IN FEBRUARY OF 2017 MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A SERIES OF 3 BEEPS. AS I CONTINUED TO DRIVE MORE LIGHTS CAME ON AND MY DASH BOARD LOOKED LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE EX. AIRBAG, OIL, CHECK ENGINE, ABS, EPC, BRAKE LIGHT, ETC. WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGH WAY MY GAUGES WILL SHUT OFF AND I CAN NOT SEE HOW FAST I AM GOING, MY CAR WILL DECELERATE WITH MY FOOT ON THE GAS AT RANDOM TIMES ON THE HIGH WAY. I LOOK MY CAR IN FOR REPAIR TO CARS AUTO IN LAS VEGAS BECAUSE MY CAR COULD NOT PASS SMOG. THEY DID AN ANALYSIS AND INFORMED ME THAT MY ABS MODULE WAS SHOT AND THERE WAS AN ACTIVE RECALL FOR THE DEVICE. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL VW DEALERSHIP AND THOUGHT WITH MY SAFETY IN CONCERN THAT THIS WOULD BE A SIMPLE FIX. INSTEAD, THEY INFORMED ME THAT I WOULD NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND COME BACK ANOTHER DAY BUT I REFUSED TO DRIVE MY CAR OFF THE LOT. THEY TOOK MY CAR TO THE BACK AND SAID THAT MY ABS MODULE WAS NOT COMMUNICATING WITH THE COMPUTER AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO PAY $700 TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC DONE BEFORE THEY WOULD REPLACE MY ABS. IF THE ABS IS FAULTY AS EXPLAINED IN RECALL #16V913 UNDER VW ACTION 45F2 IF THE ABS FAILS TO PASS THE TEST THEN IT WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THEY SEEM TO NOT BE COMPLYING AND GIVING ME THE RUN AROUND.

THE CAR WAS DRIVEN A SHORT 7 MILES AND PARKED FOR 2.5 HOURS IN 28F WEATHER. UPON STARTING TO RETURN THE SMELL OF FUEL WAS NOTICEABLE. UPON DRIVING THE SMELL DID NOT DISSIPATE AND SEEMED QUITE INTENSE. THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AFTER ABOUT MILE OF SLOW IN-TOWN TRAVEL AND ON A HUNCH THE TOP ENGINE COVER WAS REMOVED. FUEL WAS FOUND TO BE ALL OVER THE TOP OF THE ENGINE IN THE AREA OF THE INJECTOR LINES. THE RECALL WORK (11V490000) FOR THESE LINES WAS DONE YEARS AGO. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP AWAITING EVALUATION BUT I CAN'T HELP WONDER IF THEIR RECALL WORK WAS NOT FULLY SUCCESSFUL AT PREVENTING THE FUEL LEAK IT WAS MEANT TO. *TR

VOLKSWAGEN WILL NOT FIX DUE TO EMISSIONS RECALL OF MY VEHICLE AND OVER WARRANTY. VOLKSWAGEN KNOWS THIS IS A DEFECT WITH THE DIESEL ENGINE AND WON'T FIX IT.
VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE TRAVELING OUT OF STATE IN 118 DEGREE WEATHER NEAR PHOENIX. STALL OCCURRED JUST AS WE WERE TURNING BACK ONTO THE HIGHWAY AFTER STOPPING TO CHECK THE MAP. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND ENGINE WOULD CRANK BUT NOT START. TOWED TO NEAREST DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED HPFP FAILURE KNOWN TO OCCUR WITH VW TDI ENGINES.

TO REPAIR THE FUEL SYSTEM IS $5300 WHICH IS MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. CALLED VW AND THEY WILL NOT OFFER ANY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE...EVEN WITH THIS CAR BEING PART OF 'DIESELGATE'. HOPING OTHER DRIVERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM ARE COMPLAINING AND ODI CONSIDERS RE-OPENING THE REPORT. WE HAVE BEEN HAVING AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE STALLING OUT WHILE DRIVING. IT STARTED WITH THE EPC LIGHT COMING ON SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, BUT THE LIGHT DOES NOT STAY ON AND THERE HAS BEEN NO CONSISTENCY TO THE OCCURRENCES. HOWEVER, NOW, THE CAR WILL STAY RUNNING FOR LONG AND STALLS OUT SHORTLY AFTER STARTING. THE EPC COMES ON SOMETIMES, BUT NOT EVERY TIME THAT IS STALLS OUT. TODAY I TOOK THE CAR FOR A DRIVE AROUND THE BLOCK, AS SOON AS I GOT IT BACK HOME, IT STALLED OUT. FROM THAT POINT ON THE CAR WOULD NOT STAY RUNNING FOR MORE THAN 15 SECONDS.

THIS IS FOR A 2009 VW JETTA TDI. THE TDI OF COURSE HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH VW ADJUSTING SOFTWARE TO COVER UP NOX EMISSIONS ON SEVERAL YEAR MODELS OF THEIR DIESEL 2.0 ENGINES. WHAT ALSO NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT IS THE HIGH NUMBER OF FAILURES INVOLVING THE DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF) UNITS. IT COULD BE THE SOFTWARE HAT HAS BEEN CHURNING OUT WRONG EMISSIONS READINGS COULD HAVE POSSIBLY OVERTAXED THE SOOT COLLECTION IN THIS VEHICLES AS WELL. I WOULD SUGGEST SOMEONE FROM YOUR OFFICE PERUSE FORUMS AT TDICLUB AND OTHER TDI SITES TO SEE THE NUMBER OF THESE UNITS THAT HAVE BEEN REPORTED BY MEMBERS. I HAVE NOT HAD THE FAILURE AS OF YET, BUT WANTED TO BRING THIS TO YOUR ATTENTION

WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, MY CAR BEGAN TO MAKE A RUMBLING SOUND, FOLLOWED BY A ENGINE WARNING MESSAGE TURNING ON. WITHIN A MINUTE, MY CAR DIED AND WOULD NOT RESTART. WE TOWED OUR 2009 VW JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI TO A VW SPECIALIZED MECHANIC WHO CONFIRMED THAT THERE WERE METAL SHAVINGS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM THAT SEEMS TO BE RESULTING FROM A HPFP FAILURE. MILEAGE WAS AT 131769 AT TIME OF FAILURE. (OUTSIDE OF THE EXTENDED WARRANTY TIME PERIOD FOR THE HPFP ISSUE) 12/21/2012 TWO FAULTY REAR PASSENGER SEAT BELTS WERE REPLACED. AIRBAGS HAD NOT BEEN DEPLOYED AND CAR HAD NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT PRIOR TO SEAT BELTS BREAKING.

"HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP" ADDENDUM TO COMPLAINT #10808605 PLEASE ADD TO THE PREVIOUS THAT MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME & I FAILED TO MENTION THAT WHEN THE (HPFP) FAILED HE WAS IN THE FAST LANE OF THE FREEWAY & HIS POWER WAS IMMEDIATELY STOPPED. THIS HAPPENED ON THE I10 FREEWAY EASTBOUND JUST BEFORE THE "COUNTY LINE RD" OFFRAMP IN YUCAIPA, CA. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER IN THE FAST LANE FOR HIM TO PULL OVER. HE WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC TO HIS RIGHT AS HE HAD TO MAKE IT ACROSS 2 LANES OF TRAFFIC IN AN UPHILL GRADE. THE CAR BARELY MADE IT TO THE OFFRAMP! IF THERE HAD BEEN TRAFFIC (TYPICALLY SLOW MOVING TRUCK TRAFFIC), HE WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY & SURELY HIT!! IN MY PREVIOUS COMPLAINT I WAS ANGRY ABOUT VW NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE KNOWN FAILURE. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE CAR OWNERS & REGULARLY SERVICE OUR VEHICLES. I COULD UNDERSTAND HAD THIS BEEN NEGLIGENCE ON OUR PART. MY HUSBAND COMMUTES 200 MILES A DAY & WE RELY HEAVILY ON HAVING A RELIABLE VEHICLE, WHICH WE THOUGHT WE HAD IN A VW DIESEL. THEY RECOGNIZED THE DEFECT BY OFFERING A 10YR, 120,000 MILE WARRANTY EXTENSION. MIND YOU THIS IS A DIESEL ENGINE WHICH HAS A LIFE EXPECTANCY OF AT LEAST DOUBLE THIS. AT SOME POINT THIS FAILURE WAS BOUND TO HAPPEN & VW KNOWS IT. I SPOKE WITH MANY VW TECHNICIANS IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF THIS ISSUE & THEY ALL ACKNOWLEDGE THIS IS A FAULTY PART. SOME OF THE BLOGS TRY TO ALLUDE THAT POOR FUEL IS THE CAUSE, BUT THE MECHANICS DON'T AGREE.ANY ASSISTANCE YOU CAN PROVIDE IN GETTING VW TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THIS NOT ONLY ENDANGERED THE LIFE OF MY HUSBAND, BUT THIS IS A $5500 REPAIR!!

I REFUSE TO TAKE CAR TO VW DEALER BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE ISSUES WITH THEM ABOUT THE ERC VALVE AND DIESEL FUEL PARTICULATE FILTER (ENGINE LIGHT CONSTANTLY STAYS ON) BEING 1 OF THE ISSUES VW HAS ADMITTED BEING FAULTY BUT STILL NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. TO GET THE ABS FIXED IT'S GOING TO BE OVER $2500 AND THE HAVE THE ERC & DIESEL FUEL PARTICULATE FILTER FIXED IS OVER $3000. EACH OF THESE ITEMS ARE FAULTY AND SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BY THE DEALER WITH A CENT PAID FROM MY POCKET. BOTH ARE LIFE THREATENING FAULTS THAT EVENTUALLY COULD LEAD TO MY DEATH OR DEATHS OF OTHERS. I HAVE NO CHOICE AS THIS IS MY SOLE SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION SO I HAVE TO DRIVE IT. EVEN THOUGH VW ADMITS FAULT THEY ARE DOING NOTHING TO HELP EXCEPT FOR OFFERING "CONSOLATION" GIFTS - NONE WILL COVER COST TO FIX CAR AND GET MYSELF AND OTHERS OUT OF DANGER. YESTEDAY, THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN AFTER I GOT OFF FREEWAY AT OFFRAMP. AS I CAME TO A STOP AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AND ENGINE STOPPED. HAD A FLASHING "GLOW PLUG" ICON ON DASH FOR LESS THAN A MINUTE AND LITTLE NO ACCELERATION BEFORE EXITING FREEWAY. WOULD NOT RESTART. HAD TO HAVE CAR TOWED 50 MILES TO HOME. TODAY I FIND A DTC OF P0087, FUEL PRESSURE TOO LOW. I UNSCREWED THE SCREWS HOLDING THE FUEL FILTER ASSY TOP COVER. LIFTING THE COVER, I SAW METAL PARTICLES ON TOP OF THE FUEL FILTER. THIS ALWAYS MEANS THE HI-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP HAS FAILED - FORCING METAL PARTICLES TO THE FUEL TANK, HI PRESSURE FUEL RAIL, FUEL INJECTORS, FUEL FILTER AND FUEL LINES.

THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP OF THE TDI DIESEL VERSION OF THIS CAR IS EASILY COMPROMISED UNDER REGULAR USE AND SENDS THE CAR INTO A DISABLED MODE WHILE DRIVING. IT IS DANGEROUS AND VERY UNCLEAR WHAT IS HAPPENING.

ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, I HAD MY MECHANIC DO A 120,000 MILE SERVICE AND DIAGNOSE THE DASH ENGINE LIGHT AND THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS REPLACED. WHEN I PICKED THE CAR UP I SMELLED DIESEL. I DROVE IT 13 MILES, WHEN I GOT HOME I SMELLED DIESEL AGAIN. I OPENED THE HOOD AND THERE WAS DIESEL ALL OVER THE LEFT ENGINE SIDE. THERE WAS A WET, SPLIT FUEL LINE, LEAKING FLUID IN THE PARKING LOT, A BLUE PLASTIC SET SMALL RINGS (LIKE THE OLYMPIC SYMBOL) SAT NEAR THE SPLIT HOSE. IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A FIRE, AND OTHER CARS TO BE IN DANGER FROM SLICK ROAD, AMONG OTHER THINGS.

THIS PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY FUEL PUMP FAILURE IN VW DIESEL ENGINES. IT HAPPENS IN TWO WAYS. FUEL PUMP FAILS SENDING METAL SHARDS THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM OR FUEL PUMP PROVIDES INADEQUATE PRESSURE AND CAR ENTERS 'LIMP MODE'. IN THE FIRST CASE THE CAR STOPS RUNNING AND ENTIRE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM MUST BE REPLACED. THE SECOND CASE HAPPENS UNDER LOAD (PASSING, ENTERING FREEWAY OR CLIMBING INCLINE). 'LIMP MODE' MEANS LOSS OF POWER. THE CAR MUST BE PULLED OVER, IGNITION TURNED OFF AND THEN BACK ON TO CLEAR ERROR CODE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS WHEN FREEWAY DRIVING. I'VE HAD BOTH CASES OF FAILURE. VW HAS OPTED NOT TO RECALL BUT RATHER DEAL CASE BY CASE. MY LAST FAILURE WAS WITH A PUMP WITH ONLY 2000 MILES ON IT. BOSCH MAKES THE PUMPS. AFTER A FEW PUMP REPLACEMENTS, VW REFUSES TO PAY. AFTER THE LAST REPLACEMENT I WAS TOLD THAT IT WOULD TAKE AN 'ACT OF GOD' TO BREAK THE NEW VERSION OF PUMP. SO I GUESS GOD BROKE IT. THERE IS MUCH DOCUMENTATION ONLINE FOR 'LIMP MODE'. A GOOD SOURCE FOR DOCUMENTING THE PROBLEM IS WWW.TDICLUB.COM (SEARCH LIMP MODE). I DON'T KNOW IF A RECALL WILL FIX THE PROBLEM SINCE THE PUMPS WILL CONTINUE TO FAIL. I DO BELIEVE THAT VW SHOULD REPLACE THE PUMPS AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE IN PERPETUITY. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT BOSCH SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR PROVIDING SUBSTANDARD PUMPS.

AGAIN, CLEARED BY STOP AND RESTART OF VEHICLE. FLASHING GLOW PLUG INDICATOR RETURNED ALMOST IMMEDIATELY, THIS TIME WITH SOLID "CHECK ENGINE" INDICATOR AS WELL. DROVE TO DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHERE THEY FOUND METAL FRAGMENTS IN THE FUEL SYSTEM AND LIKELY HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. CURRENTLY AWAITING RESULTS OF FUEL TEST TO VERIFY FAILURE WAS NOT CAUSED BY MISFUELING WITH GASOLINE.

THE CAR WAS RUNNING FINE AND WE HAD NO ISSUES DURING TEST DRIVE OR THE MONTH AFTER UNTIL 6/18/14 WHEN THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT CAME ON. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WE BOUGHT IT AT BECAUSE IT HAD A 12/12000 WARRANTY ON IT AND THEY COULDN'T FIND A PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED THE BATTERY. IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND WE TOOK IT IN TO THEM, THIS TIME THEY SENT IT BACK TO THE VW DEALERSHIP THEY HAD OBTAINED IT FROM TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. WHILE DRIVING MY 2009 JETTA SPORTWAGON TDI ON A 3-LANE ARTERIAL, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO SPUTTER AND AT THE SAME TIME THE GLOW PLUG DASHBOARD LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING. WITHIN 5 SECONDS THE ENGINE STALLED COMPLETELY AND WOULD NOT RESTART, LEAVING THE CAR DISABLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LANE. AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP DISCOVERED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP) HAD SHATTERED AND SENT SHARDS OF METAL DOWNSTREAM THROUGH THE FUEL SYSTEM. THOSE SHARDS IN TURN DAMAGED THE FUEL LINES AND FUEL INJECTORS. THE INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WAS UNABLE TO SECURE A REPLACEMENT PART FOR THE HPFP FROM ITS USUAL SOURCES AND CONTACTED THE LOCAL VOLKSWAGEN DEALER. THE VW DEALER WOULD NOT SELL THE PART TO THE INDEPENDENT SHOP BUT INDICATED THAT VOLKSWAGEN WOULD REPAIR THE PROBLEM AT NO COST EVEN THOUGH THE CAR WAS NO LONGER UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE PARTS MANAGER AT THE VW DEALER, SHE INDICATED THAT HPFP FAILURE WAS A KNOWN BUT UNCOMMON PROBLEM AND THAT SHE SAW CARS WHERE THIS HAD HAPPENED "ABOUT 10 OR 12 TIMES A YEAR." WHEN I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER, HOWEVER, HE SAID THAT MY CAR WAS THE 7TH OR 8TH CAR ON HIS REPAIR FLOOR AT THAT TIME WITH A FAILED HPFP, AND THAT HE HAD BEEN SEEING "ABOUT 15 TO 20 CARS A MONTH" WITH THIS PROBLEM. HE SAID THAT SOME OF THEM HAD PROBABLY FAILED DUE TO MISFUELING, BUT THAT OTHERS FAILED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. HE SAID IT WAS PROBABLY DUE TO A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT DIESEL FORMULATION IN THE US VS. IN EUROPE. WHEN I PICKED UP THE REPAIRED CAR TWO WEEKS LATER, I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER IF THERE WAS ANY EVIDENCE OF MISFUELING IN MY CAR AND HE SAID "NO." I ASKED HOW MANY HPFP FAILURES HE HAD SEEN SINCE I DROPPED MY CAR OFF AND HE SAID "YOU DON'T WANNA KNOW, PROBABLY A DOZEN." HE ALSO SAID HE HAD RECENTLY BECOME AWARE OF HPFP FAILURES HAPPENING EVEN ON VEHICLES WITH PREVIOUS HPFP REPAIRS. *TR

I TRIED STARTING MY CAR AND THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER, AS IF IT WAS NOT GETTING ANY FUEL. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO COMMONWEALTH VOLKSWAGEN IN SANTA ANA , CA. THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAILED HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WHICH SENT SLIVERS OF METAL THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM,(HOSES PIPES INJECTION UNITS FUEL PUMPS, FILTERS, ETC.) WAS REPLACED. VOLKSWAGEN PAID FOR THE ENTIRE REPAIRS. I WAS TOLD BY THE VOLKSWAGEN SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THAT THEY HAD SEEN THIS ISSUE BEFORE AND THAT IT WAS NOT UNCOMMON IN 2009 & 2010 JETTA TDI AND OTHER TDI MODELS. THEY ASKED IF GASOLINE HAD EVER BEEN USED AND I INDICATED THAT I HAVE ONLY USED DIESEL FUEL AND THAT VOLKSWAGEN HAD RETROFITTED THE FUEL NOZZLE RECEPTACLE TO ONLY ACCEPT DIESEL FUEL NOZZLES. IT CONCERNS ME THAT VOLKSWAGEN KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, THAT THEY REPAIR THE VEHICLE AT THEIR EXPENSE, NO QUESTIONS ASKED, AND IT HAS BEEN REPORTED HUNDREDS OF TIME BY VOLKSWAGEN OWNERS ON A VARIETY OF INTERNET WEBSITES, YET VOLKSWAGEN IS NOT RECALLING THE VEHICLES TO PROACTIVELY FIX THE PROBLEM. THEY FIX THE PROBLEM ONE AT A TIME AS IT OCCURS. THEY WAIT UNTIL THE SYSTEM FAILS AND THE CONSUMER IS PUT IN JEOPARDY OF BEING IN A MAJOR, LIFE THREATENING ACCIDENT OR STRANDED IN A REMOTE AREA. THE TECHNICIANS TOOK FIVE DAYS TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, WHICH WAS DETERMINED TO BE A FAILED HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. I WAS TOLD THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM MUST BE REPLACED IN ORDER FOR THE CAR TO RUN PROPERLY, DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM GETS CONTAMINATED WITH TINY METAL SHAVINGS WHEN THE PUMP FAILS, THE COST WAS ESTIMATED AT $8000-$10000 FROM A LOCAL VW DEALER. I CALLED THE DEALER AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM, THEY TOLD ME THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE ON SOME MODELS BUT THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO RECALLS, SO NOTHING WOULD BE COVERED UNDER A WARRANTY. I AM NOT HAVING THE CAR FIXED DUE TO THE FACT THAT I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY AND THE CAR ITSELF IS ONLY VALUED AT AROUND $14000. LOCAL VW DEALER SERVICE MANAGER INDICATES ISSUE IS WITH FUEL PUMP AND ENSUING DEBRIS IN ENGINE. COST TO REPAIR IN EXCESS OF $5,000. VW TO DATE UNWILLING TO ACKNOWLEDGE DEFECT AND CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS COST OF REPAIR, OR SHOW ANY CONCERN FOR THE SAFETY ISSUES THIS SORT OF PROBLEM PRESENTS. *TR

THIS IS THE SECOND COMPLAINT FILED ON THIS CAR. THE REF # FOR THE FIRST NHTSA COMPLAINT IS VOQ 10484807. ON NOV 26, 2012 (DATE TAKEN FROM DEALER REPAIR INVOICE) I PICKED THE CAR UP AT THE DEALERSHIP AFTER THE INITIAL FAILURE REPAIRS. I RESET THE TRIP METER (I DON'T REMEMBER THE EXACT MILEAGE THE VEHICLE HAD WHEN I PICKED IT UP). LATER THAT SAME DAY (26 NOV 12) I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND TOLD THEM THE ENGINE WAS MAKING A WEIRD SOUND. THE MECHANIC AGREED THAT THE ENGINE WAS MAKING A WEIRD SOUND AND SAID HE THOUGHT IT WAS THE NEW SECONDARY FUEL PUMP MAKING THE NOISE. THE DEALERSHIP AGREED TO ORDER A NEW SECONDARY PUMP FOR THE CAR AND THEY TOLD TO CONTINUE DRIVING THE CAR UNTIL THE NEW PUMP ARRIVED. ON OR ABOUT 12 DEC 2012, THE CAR SUFFERED ANOTHER RAPID DECELERATION FAILURE IDENTICAL TO THE ONE THAT OCCURRED ON 26 SEP 2012 WITH THE EXCEPTION THAT THE ENGINE DID NOT COMPLETELY QUIT. I WAS ABLE TO LIMP THE CAR HOME (TOP SPEED WAS APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH) USING SIDE STREETS AND STAYING OFF THE FREEWAY. THE TRIP METER HAD 349 MILES ON IT WHEN I GOT HOME. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THEM. THEY REPLACED THE FUEL TANK PUMPS (APPARENTLY THERE ARE TWO PUMPS IN THE FUEL TANK). WHILE THEY WERE TEST DRIVING THE VEHICLE, TO RETURN IT TO ME, THEY EXPERIENCED A RAPID DECELERATION (FROM THEIR DESCRIPTION IT APPEARED AS THE SAME FAILURE I HAD JUST EXPERIENCED). THE DEALERSHIP CALLED ME AND TOLD ME THEY WERE AT A LOSS TO EXPLAIN THE FAILURE AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO CALL THE VW TECH LINE FOR HELP. VW TOLD THEM THEY THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS THE HPFP. IN TOTAL, ALL THREE FUEL PUMPS WERE ONCE AGAIN REPLACED. TO VW AND HOY-FOX CREDIT THESE REPAIRS WERE DONE AT NO COST TO ME (EXCEPT FOR THE TOW BILL). THE CAR IS NOW ON ITS THIRD HPFP IN LESS THAN FOUR MONTHS. BOTTOM LINE, IN MY OPINION, THE VW TDI HPFP IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR

JETTA WAGON TDI CLEAN DIESEL VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN ABOUT 35 MPH ON BUSY ROAD WITH FULL TANK OF FUEL. VEHICLE STARTED STUMBLING AND LOSING POWER. WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF STUMBLING VEHICLE THEN STALLED. INITIALLY WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED BUT WAS STUMBLING SEVERELY AND WAS ONLY ABLE TO CREEP A FEW FEET BEFORE STALLING. VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE RESTARTED AND HAD TO BE TOWED 23 MILES TO NEAREST DEALERSHIP WHERE THE INTERCOOLER (CHARGE COOLER) WAS FOUND TO HAVE ICED UP AND CONTAIN ICE AND WATER. THIS SEEMS TO BE KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE AS VW HAS A TSB OUT ON THE ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THEY ACTUALLY HAD ANOTHER VEHICLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE COME IN THE DAY AFTER OURS AND LAST WINTER HAD MANY WITH THIS ISSUE. AS I ACCELERATED AND MERGED INTO THE LANE FROM THE ONRAMP AS I GOT UP TO SPEED (@60 MPH) THE "GLOW PLUG LIGHT" CAME ON AND THEN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR IMMEDIATELY BEGAN LOSING POWER AND I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE VERY BUSY INTERSTATE. IT WAS DANGEROUS AS I LOST POWER AND HAD TO MANEUVER BETWEEN PASSING CARS IN ORDER TO GET TO THE SHOULDER TO PULL OVER. I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND LET THE CAR REST FOR A MINUTE OR SO. I TURNED THE ENGINE BACK ON AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE AND THE CAR HAD VERY LIMITED POWER SO I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE CAR AGAIN AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR, OPENED THE HOOD, AND NOTICED WHAT APPEARED TO BE GASOLINE COATING THE ENGINE AS WELL AS TRAILING BEHIND THE CAR. I CALLED AAA AND HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE RIVERBANK VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP IN STAMFORD, CT WHICH WAS CLOSED DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT WAS SUNDAY. THE FOLLOWING DAY I SPOKE WITH THE SERVICE MANAGER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT BE LOOKED AT UNTIL FRIDAY DECEMBER DEC 21ST WHEN A "SPECIALIST" FROM VW WOULD ARRIVE TO INSPECT THE CAR. I HAVE PERFORMED MY OWN DILIGENCE AND HAVE FOUND THAT SIMILAR ISSUES WITH THE 2009 JETTA TDI'S HAVE BEEN FAIRLY COMMON AND I EXPECT (HOPE) VW WILL COVER ALL REPAIR AND RENTAL CAR COSTS FOR ME IN THIS MATTER. *TR

ABOUT A QUARTER OF A MILE LATER, THE CAR (STILL HESITATING - NOW I KNOW IT IS CALLED "LIMP MODE") MADE A GRINDING NOISE FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE BAY, AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER AND STOPPED IN TRAFFIC. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY DIAGNOSED A HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM (FUEL TANK, 3 PUMPS, ALL FUEL LINES, COMMON RAIL FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM, FUEL FILTER HOLDER, FUEL FILTER, FUEL INJECTORS) WERE REPLACED UNDER POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. I AM THE ONLY PERSON TO FILL THIS CAR WITH DIESEL FUEL AND ALWAYS DO SO AT REPUTABLE STATIONS. THE FUEL WAS TESTED AND DID NOT CONTAIN GASOLINE OR ANY ADDITIVES. THIS CAR WAS FIRST PURCHASED IN NORTH CAROLINA AND IS A US VEHICLE. I BOUGHT IT FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER (AT 6200 MILES) AND DROVE IT TO CANADA. IT IS REGISTERED IN ONTARIO. THIS FAILURE CAUSED METAL SHAVINGS TO BE DISPERSED THROUGHOUT ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. I'M TOLD THAT THE HP FUEL PUMP, LOW AND HIGH PRESSURE FUEL REGULATORS, AND TANK FUEL PUMP ALL MUST BE REPLACED ALONG WITH A COMPLETE REMOVAL AND CLEANING OF ALL FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS. THE CAR WAS TOWED THE REST OF THE WAY TOWARDS THE DEALER AND DIAGNOSED AS A FAILED HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP, CAUSING CATASTROPHIC FUEL SYSTEM DAMAGE. THE FUEL RAIL, INJECTORS, PUMP, TANK, AND ALL LINES WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED AS THE RESULT OF THE PUMP FAILURE CAUSED BITS OF METAL FLAKES TO CIRCULATE ABOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE INSURANCE COMPANY DENIED MY CLAIM BECAUSE THE FUEL WAS NOT CONTAMINATED. THE INSURANCE COMPANY INFORMED ME THAT THE NHTSA HAS REVIVED NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURES ON VOLKSWAGEN TDI ENGINES. I WANT TO ADD MY VEHICLE TO THAT LIST WITH AN INDEPENDENT LAB ANALYSIS STATING THAT THE FUEL WAS NOT CONTAMINATED. IT IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY HAZARD WHEN YOUR VEHICLE STOPS ON A CONGESTED HIGHWAY. THEY ALSO SAID THAT THE WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER IT UNLESS I COULD PROVE THAT I ONLY PUT DIESEL FUEL IN SO HAD TO PROVIDE RECEIPTS FOR MY RECENT FUEL PURCHASES AS WELL AS FUEL SAMPLES. 2009 JETTA VOLKSWAGEN TDI, WITH ONLY 50500 MILES ON IT. THE CAR DIED IN THE MIDDLE OF INTERSECTION AT 35MPH. THIS WAS DURING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. IN THE CAR WAS ME 32, MY WIFE 36, MY DAUGHTER OF 8 YEARS OLD AND SON OF 2 YEARS OLD. IT WAS A VERY SCARY EVENT. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST VW DEALERSHIP. IT TOOK THEM 3 DAYS TO LOOK AT THIS CAR AND AFTER I CALLED 15 TIMES, THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS FUEL PUMP HAD BEEN SLOWLY BREAKING DOWN INSIDE THE FUEL TANK, RUNNING THROUGH THE LINES AND INTO THE INJECTORS. AFTER NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO START WHILE SITTING ON THE PHONE WIHT OUR INSURANCE COMPANY, THE CAR STARTED ONCE AND DIED AFTER SITTING IDLE FOR THREE MINUTES. WE THEN ATTEMPTED TO START IT ONE LAST TIME AND DROVE 25 MPH TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION. WE ALL GOT OUT OF THE CAR, LOCKED IT UP THINKING IT MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH AN ANTITHEFT FEATURE. WE GOT BACK IN THE CAR AND WERE ABLE TO DRIVE 41 MILES HOME AT HIWAY SPEEDS. THE FOLLOWING DAY WE DROVE 5 MILES INTO TOWN AND IT DIED AGAIN GOING 25 MPH. THE DEALERSHIP STATES THAT THE REPAIR SHOULD BE COVERED EVEN THOUGH THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED. THIS IS SUSPECT TO ME. EITHER OUR FUEL STANDARDS ARE NOT PAR WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD AND NEED FURTHER REGULATION OR THE PUMPS NEED TO BE RECALLED. DEALERSHIP CALLED WITH A DIAGNOSIS OF A FAILED HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND STATED THAT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO METAL SHAVINGS FOUND THROUGHOUT THE SYSTEM. ADVISED THAT REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER EXISTING 5-YEAR/60,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY, CLAIMING THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS SOMEHOW EXEMPT FROM WARRANTY COVERAGE, AND ESTIMATED $8700 TO FIX THE CAR. I CALLED VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA TO REPORT THE INCIDENT AND QUESTION WHY THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER AN OBVIOUS DEFECT IN THE CAR; THEY EVENTUALLY AGREED TO COVER THE FULL COST OF REPAIRS UNDER WARRANTY. VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED WITHIN A WEEK, BUT IS NOW BACK AT JIM ELLIS VW FOR FURTHER EVALUATION AFTER THE SAME "ENGINE MALFUNCTION WORKSHOP" AND GLOW PLUG LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN ONLY 30 MILES AFTER THE REPAIRS. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE CAR AND EXPLAINED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED AND METAL SHAVING AND CONTAMINANTS WERE THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM AND THAT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER AWAITING A THIRD PARTY INSPECTION FROM THE WARRANTY COMPANY. ALL REQUIRED VEHICLE SERVICES HAVE BEEN PERFORMED AT THE REQUIRED INTERVALS.
