Component/System Failure/Malfunction: ignition switch and starter, possibly transmission Yes, available for inspection upon request. Car has randomly stalled while in motion; ignition and starter switch have been replaced as well as microswitch panel - yet problem persists. Power steering shuts down, steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn. Have to put car in neutral, typically, and try to restart while in motion. Has happened over 100 times; replaced alternator as well. Battery was replaced, brand new, yet was drained multiple times - recharged at Autozone. Vehicle was brought to Larry H. Miller Volkswagen - was advised the problem was fixed, as well as recall repairs (microswitch), paid for the service, went to leave dealership and problem immediately happened again. Complete shut off. Would stay running a little longer while in neutral or AC on. When the vehicle stalls the only light that comes on is the battery light. All other lights and systems work. Ran diagnostic codes through personal mechanic, friend, and dealership... Code states "Key/Ignition/Computer" but unsure what specifically. The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta also does not have the original key fob. May be improper programming? Continued to research all other recalls, services have been completed and yet the problem persists.

Car was being driven and coils snapped caused, tire to pop damaging front end. Car was being driven and randomly shut off in middle of road. Driving vehicle shifting into gear lags, check engine light is on, had reader and said that valve 2 has low pressure. As a result clanking and loose noise sounds are heard when driven from drivers side.
Air bag light came on showing both driver and passenger airbags off without having any collision then pulled into gas station, car was fine pumped gas and tried to start vehicle and couldn't turn key further than interior lights. Was locked in ignition. Also had all brake pads and rotors replaced 1.5 years ago, now service center says they need replaced again already. Diagnostics from VW shoe ignition switch lock cylinder malfunction needs replaced.there are recalls for the airbags and ignition switch cylinder and brakes for my exact year, month,make and model(11 recalls) but shows 0 recalls under vin. Vw wants to charge me $1,200 to fix what should be free under recalls.

Door unexpectedly does not close and latch correctly. Had to hold the car door the whole time driving. The driver door and passenger door has done it so far. This needs to look into.

At various times my car will randomly stall and it's not showing any warning lights to indicate what's wrong or when it will happen.
The power window never works the way it is suppose to, when I row my window down it MESSES with the speakers for some reason, my wipes don't work all the time and freeze easy. When driving does nor like to shift out of 1st it's got that mk shifter, it will stay in first gear unless the gas is pressed and released fast also can smell like a burnt wire or/ candle was smell. When I try to put the air on the smell becomes worse.
Lights coming on by themselves while in park position and draining the battery. Replaced battery 3 times in the last 7 months.
Ignition switch. Having a hard time turning car off.

The ABS module in this vehicle has failed as the ABS, Traction Control, Airbag, and Brake lights are all on with the brake light flashing. The dealership stated a new module would be needed to have functioning anti lock brakes. In reference to case - NHTSA: 16V913, I believe the same components are the same as the power train did not change between the two vehicles. I am having the same symptoms as stated in this document but there is no recall as of yet.
Car horn stopped working followed by an airbag sensor light that won't turn off. Seems like the clock spring failed prematurely?
My car would randomly stall while driving, happens both when braking and not braking. When it stalls steering wheel locks up, cannot press gas pedal, and brakes stop working almost. This is incredibly dangerous because while on a road at 50mph+ and my car suddenly stops it can cause a serious accident. The dealer has been able to reproduce it multiple times, and has said it is a common problem. The only warning light that switched on was the battery light after it had stalled. Currently at the VW dealership and was told that it was the fuel filter, was not the problem and car continued to stall more. Not only was a good part replaced but created an even more dangerous situation than before.

MY TIRED WAS PUNCTURED AND THE TIRE PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT DID NOT COME ON AT ALL. THE SEATBELTS NEVER RETRACT AFTER TAKING THEM OFF THEY JUST HANG THERE. I HAVE BOUGHT AN OLDER 2011 VW FOR THE FIRST TIME IN CANADA FROM A USED CAR DEALER LOT IN BOLTON, ON. LITTLE DID I KNOW ABOUT VW'S, AS THE CAR WAS BARELY DRIVEN. NOW IN MY CAR GARAGE AND I MOVED TO THE US. I HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL LETTERS STATING THAT THERE IS A RELAY SWITCH PROBLEM AND THERE IS NO FIX AVAILABLE FOR THIS CAR. IN LAY MAN'S TERMS, THE CAR KEYS CAN BE TAKEN OUT WITHOUT THE CAR BEING IN "PARKING" POSITION. 1800 NUMBER WAS GIVEN TO ME AND I AM GIVEN A RUNAROUND. THE NUMBER IN THE LETTER STATES CALL THIS NUMBER, AND THEY GIVE ME A RUNAROUND SAYING CALL VW CANADA, THERE IS NO MENTION TO CALL THAT NUMBER. I WANT THE DEALER TO TAKE THE CAR BACK AND GIVE ME A BOOK VALUE OF THE VEHICLE. NO RECOURSE TO THIS ISSUE SO FAR. AS THEY ARE DODGING TO RESOLVE ISSUE WITH CUSTOMERS FOR RELAY SWITCH PROBLEM, YET I CONTINUE TO GET THEIR LETTERS INFORMATING THE CAR HAS BECOME "NON-COMPIANT AS PER NORTH AMERICAN STANDARDS. WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR, THE CAR HAD AN ALARM GOING OFF WITHOUT THE CAR KEY IN IGNITION. DEALER ADVISED TO TAKE THE BATTERY OUT. IT COULD BE THE RELAY SWITCH PROBLEM. THERE ARE MULTIPLE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD. THE ABS, BRAKE, TRACTION CONTROL, AIRBAG, AND TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT ARE ALL ON WHEN STARTING THE CAR AND STAY ON. THE TPMS LIGHT SOMETIMES SHUTS OFF BUT SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T. THERE IS A SIMILAR PROBLEM ON 2006-2010 JETTAS AND THERE WAS A RECALL THAT RESOLVED A SIMILAR PROBLEM.

THE MECHANIC AT THE SHOP SAID THAT THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH MY MODEL CAR BUT THAT VOLKSWAGEN REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM. UPON DOING A GOOGLE SEARCH TO SEE WHAT I CAN DO TO SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF, I FOUND A FEW HUNDRED PAGES DESCRIBING THE ISSUE, SO I'M SURE THIS IS FREQUENTLY HAPPENING. APPARENTLY, THE ONLY SOLUTION IS TO HAVE THE FAILED PARTS REPLACED WHICH COSTS UPWARDS OF $600. I BEGAN EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH THE ANTI-THEFT/LOCKING SYSTEM ABOUT LATE 2013/ EARLY 2014. THE LOCKING SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS AND THE DOORS DO NOT LOCK, BUT ALSO WHILE DRIVING THE LOCKS CONTINUOUSLY CLICK WHILE TRYING TO ENGAGE. I SPOKE TO MY LOCAL VW DEALERSHIP VIA PHONE ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS AND RECEIVED MULTIPLE ANSWERS, BUT ULTIMATELY WAS TOLD THE COST WOULD BE AROUND $500-600 DOLLARS TO REPAIR, OUT OF MY POCKET. I WAS UNAWARE OF THE RECALL INFORMATION AT THAT TIME AND COULD NOT AFFORD THIS AT THIS TIME. THEN, IN LATE DECEMBER OF 2015 MY HORN SUDDENLY, WITHOUT WARNING, STOPPED WORKING AS WELL. I DID RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT BOTH ISSUES WERE PROBABLY RELATED TO THE RECALL NUMBER: 11V196000 RECALL DATE: 03/29/2011. I SPOKE TO VW CUSTOMER CARE AND WAS INFORMED OF OTHER RECALLS AS WELL. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE VW DEALERSHIP TO HAVE ALL RECALLS PERFORMED AND WAS REASSURED THAT THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE WITH THE HORN AND ANTI-THEFT WOULD BE EXAMINED, ALONG WITH THE OTHER RECALLS. THE HORN/ANTI-THEFT ISSUE WERE NOT ADDRESSED AS STATED. THAT SAME DAY I EMAILED THE SERVICE LEAD WITH THE RECALL INFORMATION AND WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN DID NOT MATCH THIS RECALL AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO BRING MY VEHICLE IN, AGAIN, FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND/OR REPAIR (SERVICES TO BE PERFORMED OUT OF MY POCKET). ACCORDING TO THE DOCUMENTATION PROVIDED BY NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 11V196000 MY VEHICLE IS A MATCH TO THE SPECIFIC VIN ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECALL. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE, AS I UNDERSTAND IT HAS TO DO WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONING AND COULD VERY WELL CAUSE OTHER PARTS OF THE VEHICLE TO MALFUNCTION. MY MECHANIC FEELS THAT THERE MAY BE FAULTY WIRING IN THESE VEHICLES THAT WITH EXTREME COLD CONDITIONS DOES NOT ALLOW THE FULL CONDUCTION OF ELECTRICITY TO PROPERLY ACTIVATE THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND/OR HORN WHICH CAN BE A HAZARD WHILE DRIVING ESPECIALLY IN ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. AFTER 3 DAYS THEY WERE 90% POSITIVE THAT A MODULE IN THE STEERING COLUMN HAD FAILED. VW OF AMERICA DID NOT FEEL THAT THE FAILURE WAS A MANUFACTURES DEFECT NOR THE FACT THAT THE CAR SHUTS DOWN COMPLETELY WHILE BEING DRIVEN CONSTITUTED A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM.

AFTER TURNING OFF THE CAR AND THEN BACK ON, THE LIGHTS WENT OFF AND THE CAR WAS FINE. I TOOK IT TOO THE MECHANIC AND THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG AFTER $85.00 DIAGNOSTIC. THE CAR RAN FINE FOR 2 DAYS UNTIL THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AGAIN. THIS OCCURRED ON AND OFF INTERMITTENTLY ABOUT EVERY 1-2 DAYS FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS. THREE TRIPS TO THE MECHANIC WITHIN THOSE 2 WEEKS AND WITH EACH VISIT THERE WAS A COMPUTER CONNECTED TO THE CAR AND A FULL SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTIC REPORTED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. IT BECAME DANGEROUS FOR ME TO DRIVE THE CAR AND EVEN MORE SO TO DRIVE IT ON THE HIGHWAY. AFTER THE SECOND WEEK THE LIGHTS FINALLY CAME ON AND STAYED ON AND THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS THE ENGINE MISFIRING IN 2 OF THE CYLINDERS. THE MECHANIC CHANGED WITH THE IGNITION COIL ON 12/15.2014. THE ENGINE RAN COMPLETELY FINE WITHOUT ANY ISSUES UNTIL LAST WEEK, 3/19/2015. AT 3 MONTHS AND ONLY 28,000 MILES ON THE CAR THE SAME PROBLEM STARTED TO REOCCUR WHILE GETTING ONTO THE HIGHWAY AND ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE FROM 40-45MPH. I THEN CONTACTED VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA WHERE THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THEY THERE WAS A KNOW SHORT IN THOSE UNITS BUT DUE TO THE MILES ON MY VEHICLE NOTHING COULD BE DONE. THE UNIT IS 3 YEARS OLD AND WITH THE KNOWN ELECTRICAL DEFECTS, POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARDS THE VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED. *TR

NOW, WHY ARE THERE 'SOME WIRES' UNDER THE SPARK PLUGS THAT ARE NOT SUFFICIENTLY INSULATED? AND, WHY ARE 'SOME WIRES' UNDER THE SPARK PLUGS ANYWAY? THEN HE TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED A FULL TURN UP AND THAT IT WOULD COST ME $700, BECAUSE MY WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER THE TURN UP ON THE CAR. WITHIN SECONDS, THE FLAMES WERE SEVERAL FEET HIGH. I CLOSED THE DOOR AND CALLED 911. THE FLAMES EVENTUALLY EXTINGUISHED THEMSELVES IN THE CLOSED CABIN. THE FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AND OPENED THE DRIVERS DOOR. MOST OF THE DASHBOARD ON THE DRIVERS SIDE, AND THE HEADLINER WERE MELTED. THERE WAS A LOT OF EXPOSED BARE WIRE VISIBLE. THE TEMPERATURE AT THE TIME WAS 34 DEGREES F, AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TRIP OF THE DAY. THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT HEATER WAS TURNED ON HIGH, THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ON, AND THE RADIO WAS ON. NO OTHER OPERATOR CONTROLLED ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS WERE ON. THERE HAD BEEN NO PREVIOUS ELECTRICAL INCIDENTS WITH THIS CAR, NOR WERE THERE ANY AFTERMARKET ELECTRICAL ITEMS INSTALLED ON THE CAR. I HAVE LOGGED ONTO SEVERAL ON-LINE FORUMS FOR VOLKSWAGEN OWNERS, SUCH AS WWW.TDI.CLUB AND NOTICED THAT OTHERS WITH THE SAME CAR ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE DIAGNOSTIC MACHINE COULD NOT READ THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. HE SAID THAT PRETTY MUCH ACCORDING TO THE TEST, THE ECM/ECU DID NOT EXIST! FINALLY ABLE TO START VEHICLE AND KEEP IT RUNNING AFTER APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES. WAS ABLE TO DRIVE 30+ MILES HOME - STARTED FINE AFTER. THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE. THIS FIRST OCCURRED APPROXIMATELY 1 MONTH AGO WITH 8000 MILES ON VEHICLE. OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS IN MID FORTIES. CAR WOULD NOT START AT ALL - KEPT TURNING OVER, BUT WOULD NOT START. GLOW PLUG LIGHT FLASHED INTERMITTENTLY. AFTER WAITING APPROXIMATELY 45 MINUTES TO 1 HOUR THE CAR STARTED UP FINE WITHOUT HESITATION. THIS IS A RE-OCCURRENCE OF THE COMPLAINT 10425920 THAT WAS SUBMITTED BY ME ON 17 SEPTEMBER AND IS LISTED ON THIS SITE. IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN. SYMPTOMATICALLY IT IS THE SAME. WHILE TRYING TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE VEHICLE THE KEY FOB WOULDN'T OPEN THE DOORS. AFTER GAINING ENTRY TO THE VEHICLE ALL LOCKS ARE INOPERATIVE AND THE FUSE IS BLOWN. THE INITIAL ISSUE WAS WORKED ON BY MY LOCAL VW DEALER BUT DUE TO THE ODD NATURE OF THE ISSUE VW TECH WAS CONSULTED. THE SYSTEM FUSE WILL ONLY BLOW IF I TRY TO GAIN ENTRY TO THE CAR WITH THE KEY FOBS. IF A NEW FUSE IS INSTALLED AND THE SENSORS ON THE ACTUAL DOOR HANDLES ARE USED THE FUSE WILL NOT BLOW. THE DEALER HAD THE CAR FOR A WEEK AND VW WAS INDECISIVE ABOUT WHAT TO DO. VW ADVISED THE DEALERSHIP TO JUMP OUT THE FUSE AND RETURN THE VEHICLE TO ME (AND THEY DID!) UNTIL THEY COULD FIGURE OUT THE WAY AHEAD. I WAS ASKED TO RETURN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER A FEW WEEKS LATER AND A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT CENTRAL LOCKING CONTROL UNIT WAS INSTALLED. I AM RETURNING THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR ANOTHER ATTEMPT AT SOLVING THE PROBLEM. I AM QUITE SURE THAT VW SHOULDN'T BE ADVISING DEALERSHIPS TO JUMP OUT FUSES AND RETURN VEHICLES TO CUSTOMERS FOR USE. UNABLE TO ACCESS TRUNK WITHOUT GRABBING LONG HANLED STICK AND ACCESSING TRUNK EMERGENCY OPENING LATCH THROUGH BACK SEAT ARM REST TRUNK OPENING. WHILE INVESTIGATING FOR A POSSIBLE BLOW FUSE IT WAS NOTED THAT VW FAILS TO PROVIDE A FUSE MAP/DIAGRAM FOR THESE CARS IN THE OWNERS MANUAL AND ON THE BACK OF BOTH THE UNDERHOOD AND IN CAR FUSE PANELS. VW EXPLAINS THIS AWAY IN THE OWNERS MANUAL ON PAGE 324 AS A DECISION THEY MADE DUE TO THE " CONSTANT ONGOING DEVELOPMENT OF THE CAR" BEYOND THE ISSUE WITH THE LOCKS I BELIEVE THAT FAILING TO PROVIDE THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE WITH THE FUSE MAPS COULD HAVE POETENTIAL RAMIFICATIONS AS AN OWNER MAY BE UNABLE TO SOLVE A SIMPLE TECHNICAL FAULT ON THEIR VEHICLE THUS HAZARDING THEMSELVES AND OTHERS. A QUICK SCAN OF THE INSTRUMENTS SHOWED THAT THE ODOMETER READ 500 MILES AND WAS NOT INCREASING, OF COURSE THE TRIP ODOMETER AND FUEL CONSUMPTION DISPLAYS ALSO FAILED WITHOUT ANY INPUT FROM THE ODOMETER. DEALER DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AND SAID THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED HOWEVER THERE WERE NONE IN STOCK AND VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA DOES NOT HAVE ANY REPLACEMENTS. EITHER. THE VEHICLE RUNS PERFECTLY SO FAR BUT READING THROUGH OTHER COMPLAINTS AT NHTSA I'M CONCERNED ABOUT TAKING A PLANNED 1200 MILE TRIP NOT KNOWING WHETHER A CATASTROPHIC ELECTRICAL FAILURE MIGHT LEAVE ME STRANDED. THE DEALER SAID VOLKSWAGEN HAS NO IDEA WHEN THE UNITS WILL BE AVAILABLE. IT COULD BE MONTHS AND IT'S NOT CLEAR IF THE REPLACEMENT WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM OR HOW LONG IT WILL LAST.

MY VW JETTA TDI SPORTWAGEN WAS OPERATING NORMALLY ON THE MORNING OF THE INCIDENT, BUT WHEN I WENT TO THE GARAGE TO START IT THAT AFTERNOON, THE DISPLAY READ "IMMOBILIZER ACTIVE" AND "SAFE". THE CAR WOULD START FOR ABOUT 1 SECOND THEN DIE. EVIDENTLY, THE BUILT IN ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM HAD DECIDED THAT MY KEYS (I TRIED BOTH SETS OF KEYS, PLUS THE VALET KEY) DID NOT BELONG TO THE VEHICLE. EACH PRESS OF THE DECELERATION SWITCH NORMALLY CAUSES THE SPEED TO BE REDUCED BY 1 MILE PER HOUR. THE FIRST FEW PRESSES CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO DECELERATE AS IT SHOULD, BUT OCCASIONALLY ON THE THIRD OR FOURTH PRESS THE SPEED JUMPS BACK UP BY 2 OR 3 MILE PER HOUR. SOMETIMES IT CORRECTS ITSELF AND SOMETIMES IT KEEPS REPEATING THE PATTERN.

I HAD TO SPEND THE NIGHT IN A HOTEL IN A STRANGE AREA. ON MONDAY, APRIL 18TH THE DEALERSHIP STATED AN OUTSTANDING ELECTRICAL RECALL WAS THE PROBLEM. THEY CHANGED A WIRE HARNESS AND SOME FUSES AND THE CAR WAS READY FOR PICK UP. I DROVE 100 MILES TO RETRIEVE MY CAR ON APRIL 18TH. TODAY ON APRIL 19TH AFTER SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY OVERNIGHT THE CAR WOULD NOT START AGAIN AND WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST VW DEALERSHIP IN MY HOME TOWN. STILL WAITING FOR WAITING FOR A DIAGNOSIS. I OWN A 2011 VW JETTA WHICH IS EQUIPPED WITH THE NEW INTELLIGENT CRASH RESPONSE SYSTEM (ICRS) WHICH WAS PUT INTO PLACE TO MAINTAIN SAFETY DURING A FRONT END COLLISION BY TURNING CAR OFF, UNLOCKING DOORS, SHUTTING OFF FUEL SUPPLY, AND DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY FROM THE ALTERNATOR. I HAVE CONFIRMED WITH THE SALES MANAGER AT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP THAT THE SENSORS FOR THIS TO ENGAGE ARE LOCATED IN THE FRONT BUMPER AND THE FRONT DOORS. I WAS STRUCK IN THE REAR AT A SPEED OF 60MPH ON AN INTERSTATE AND THIS SYSTEM ENGAGED. THE RESULT OF THIS ENGAGEMENT ALSO POWERED DOWN MY STEERING AND BRAKES PROVIDING ME NO WAY TO CONTROL MY VEHICLE FROM THE REAR IMPACT. MY VEHICLE SUBSEQUENTLY EXCELERATED TO A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPEED AT WHICH TIME I WAS LUNGED PASSED APPROX 10 CARS OR 25 YARDS WHEN MY TIE ROD BROKEN AND LUNGED ME BACK INTO TRAFFIC AT WHICH TIME A FRONT SIDE COLLISION FINALLY BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO REST. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS SYSTEM, IT APPEARS ITS INTENTIONS ARE FOR FRONT END IMPACTS AND IS NOT SET TO ENGAGE FROM A REAR IMPACT. NEW CAR MANUAL TRANSMISSION, CAR STALLS OUT AT LOW SPEEDS ON SNOW COVERED ROADS. RPM'S 1400 - 2000 CAN STOP PROBLEM IF TRACTION CONTROL IS DISABLED. I HAVE DRIVEN MANUALS FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND IT IS NOT OPERATOR ERROR IT IS A PROBLEM WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL AND COMPUTER SYSTEM - IT DIES IN TRAFFIC AND REQUIRES THE KEY TO BE TURNED ALL THE WAY OFF AND THEN BACK ON TO GET THE CAR STARTED. TAKING THE RPM'S UP TO 2500 AVOIDS THE PROBLEM - BUT THIS WILL CERTAINLY WEAR OUT THE CLUTCH. DEALER FEELS IT IS JUST A SENSITIVE CLUTCH - I NOW HAVE 600 MILES ON THE CAR AND HAVE TO DISABLE TRACTION CONTROL TO STOP THE STALLING AT START UPS AND LOW SPEED SHIFTING.
