Subject: Request for Recall Consideration – Ignition Switch Failure in Volkswagen Jetta I am writing to formally report a serious safety issue I experienced with my vehicle and to request that it be considered for inclusion in the existing recall related to ignition switch failures. On [XXX] while driving my Volkswagen Jetta, the vehicle suddenly experienced an ignition switch failure. This caused the engine to shut down abruptly, along with the loss of all dashboard power and controls, while the vehicle was in motion. An error message clearly indicated "Ignition Switch Failed." I immediately contacted Camelback Volkswagen and reported the incident. I was advised to bring the vehicle in for inspection. I brought the car to the dealership on September 8, 2025, and after inspection, they confirmed that the ignition switch was malfunctioning. The faulty part was subsequently replaced, and I paid for the repair out of pocket. During my visit, I mentioned the known recall for ignition switch failures affecting the same model vehicles. However, I was informed that my Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is not currently included in the recall. Despite this, the issue I experienced matches the recall description both in nature and severity. Given the serious safety implications of an ignition switch failure while the vehicle is in motion, I respectfully request the following: Re-evaluate the recall scope to include vehicles like mine. Investigate whether other vehicles with the same ignition switch part number or serial are affected. Consider reimbursing the amount paid toward the repair charges, as this issue aligns with an existing known recall. I believe this is a legitimate safety concern that warrants immediate attention and formal investigation. Thank you for your time and consideration. I have attached the service report along with the paid receipt for your review and records. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My car began flashing a bunch of warning lights, including the passenger air bag and the blind spot warning and locks working on the inside. I took my car to the dealer and had them diagnose it. Turns out it needs to parts that are connected; one part they have, another they have tried to order from corporate. This part has been on back order for 8 months.

I was driving my car on a 100 degree day and and after about a block, a warning popped up on the little screen behind the steering wheel that said "Ignition switch off, safely stop the vehicle". I feel like the engine may have shut off, but I'm not sure as I just rolled to the side of the road and turned off my car as fast as a could. I waited a few minutes and turned it on, drove about a block, and it said, "Starter system faulty, please service vehicle". I once again turned it off, waited a few minutes. I googled on my phone instances of this and people saying they were still able to drive that car, so I turned it back on and started to drive it the two blocks back to my house, the "Starter system faulty" message popped up again and suddenly all of the electrical in the car shut off (the engine was still running). My radio, speedometer, everything was just off. I made it home, got on my computer and found an article about a recall that match my car's make, model, year, and key rather than button ignition. It described my exact experience. I looked up my car to see if it had a recall and it didn't. I called the dealership and they were no help, so I called the Volkswagen of America customer care line. They told me my VIN didn't qualify "probably" because it wasn't within the "manufacturing dates". I'm having a hard time understanding that since everything else lines up. Additionally, I just purchased this vehicle used from a VW dealership less than two months ago. The dealer plates are still on the car. According to them, the car was in great condition...

When outside temperatures get too hot, the electronics on my car completely shut off. I turn the key and within 1 minute, the electronics shut off and the display reads a message stating "Starter system faulty. Please service vehicle". This is a hazard, as the brake lights shut off as well. This only happens when outside temperatures are hot. Furthermore, my car matches the year, model and even the specific ignition style as a current recall. However, the recall is VIN specific and my VIN is somehow not part of the recall.

Car shuts off after a few miles in the middle of the road. I live in Arizona. Mechanic stated the ignition switch is failing. Warning sign pops up- “starter system faulty please shut down vehicle” - electronics die immediately.

Jun 18, 2025

I was driving my car when all of a sudden a message came up my dashboard saying “starter system faulty please service vehicle followed by ignition switch off safely stop vehicle “message . My screen , AC and everything turned black and had to merge to the curb and a car almost hit me. This has happened more than three times and it is not okay. There is currently a recall on the 2019 jettas with this specific problem but my VIN doesn’t fall in that even though it’s giving me the same exact problem. My safety is in danger and my car is showing exactly the same problem and message as the recall going on so it needs to be recalled so Volkswagen can fix the issue that is going on with my car.

Open recall under NHTSA Campaign ID 23V604000. When the interior of the car is too hot the ignition switch will fail causing the electrical system to shut down. My vehicle does not fall in the recall manufacturer range but it has the exact same issues.

As reported by many other drivers on this website and all over the internet that 2019 having ignition switch problem in 2019 Volkswagen jettas. I started having the same problem aswell. This has happened several time already and now I am scared to drive this car on the highways. It is clearly mentioned that 2019 and 2020 ignition systems are faulty than why vw is not helping people who have those year cars. This is the big safety concern and I believe it should not be overlooked. I tried searching with my plates and vin but it’s says 0 recalls. Every thing shuts off inside (ac, infotainment screen, all the dash lights, wiper blades, speedometer, rpm meter, everything) I hope NHTSA will take this problem seriously as not hundreds but thousands of vehicles are affected with this problem so far. Thank you

Apr 16, 2025 Crash

While traveling on [XXX] in Van Buren, Arkansas, I was involved in a hit-and-run accident. The impact caused significant front-end damage and resulted in physical injuries. The vehicle’s dashboard/electrical system indicated AIRBAG:ERROR, and the police report reflects that airbag deployed yet we have photo evidence that the airbag did not deploy. However, photo evidence clearly shows that no airbags deployed for any occupants. The airbags remained completely intact following the crash. The vehicle is a certified pre-owned 2019 Volkswagen Jetta that was still under warranty at the time. This raises serious safety concerns regarding the accuracy of the airbag deployment system and the failure of the airbags to function during a serious collision. The vehicle is being held for preservation at the co-part yard. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The ignition switch failed. Although VW had a recall for 2019 and 2020 Jettas for just this reason, the car was not included in the recall. When driving, the car warns starter system faulty and to pull over as the car will shut off. This happened on two separate occasions but was not diagnosed when first taken to the dealership 6 months ago. This time it was diagnosed but not covered by VW. I cannot get any information on how many other 2019 Jettas that were not recalled have had this problem. Any data regarding this would be appreciated. Thank you.

It was a hot day and I went to start my 2019 Jetta, it sent me a warning code to safely stop the vehicle and then all electrical shut off but the engine then proceeded to stall in place and not want to start back up. I got it to restart and the parking break locked up. I turned it off again and restarted it and managed to get the parking break off after several attempts. I had to have it towed as it was clearly not safe to drive. As soon as the temperature dropped the car was completely fine no electrical errors making me think this is similar to other Volkswagen vehicle issues. There is no recall in place but this is extremely unsafe for me to drive and I just purchased the vehicle

Without any warning whatsoever the entire electrical system goes completely off while driving the vehicle after 5 mins of it being on. This means that the lights including blinker and brake lights go off, air conditioning stops, and the entire dashboard goes off. The engine is still able to run. I am able to use the gas and breaks but I do not know what my speed is or any other information that is typically available via the dashboard. I have tried to do a reset when the problem occurs but that does not help the situation. The safety of myself and others is definitely at risk when this happens since the break lights and turning signal will no longer function at all. I can only use the hazard lights to indicate the hazard this presents. I’ve brought this issue up to multiple Volkswagen dealerships having paid the $200 diagnostics fee every time and they inform me that they are not recognizing the issue. I ask if this has anything to do with a recall that had happened to this car and been “fixed” in 2021 and they do not answer the question. I ask if it is possible that the recall was not fixed correctly and that is why I am having issues and they do not answer the question. I have also emailed customer support at Volkswagen worldwide and they state that my car never had any recalls done which is so incredibly false. I have the paperwork to confirm that it had a total of 6 different recalls done in 2021. I believe one of the recalls was never fixed properly and has only deteriorated worse since 2021. Volkswagen dealership of San Bernardino does not give any codes or anything that is more specific than possible alert to car battery/terminals/cables/clamps issues. Their recommendation was to change the car battery but that was already replaced in Aug 2024. They also recommended to change my oil filter but I had an oil change less than 5 days before at a different location. The pep boys diagnostic Revealed code P253200 which indicates a problem with the ignition switch

Nothing has happened as far as a crash goes yet but my air bag lights are on. Indicating that they need repair of some sort. There are also electrical issues that include doors locking while in the vehicle and various lights. I have called different Volkswagen dealers and I was told that there are no current recalls on my vehicle. As a result I was told I would have to pay for these issues on my own. This is not a possible scenario, I receive Social Security as my total income. My family is in danger at this point due to these issues. Volkswagen also requires an upfront amount of 200 "just in case" something else is wrong that is not covered. I could be wrong but I think this is a form of extortion that takes my choices away. Anyway at this point I don't quite know what to do to take care of these issues before one of us dies that drive the car?? I never even wanted this car but the dealer told me I could only get and afford this vehicle, A 17,000 dollar vehicle??? I thought it must be what he wanted to get rid of but I needed a car, so??? My manual transmission clutch went to the floor without warning and the car suddenly was inoperable. Bay VW in Great Neck, NY performed a $4,000 repair.. I picked uo the car today and within five miles drive the clutch failed again and the car was inoperable. In December 2022 the same thing happened while driving on [XXX] . I was in the passing lane and lost complete control of the car except for steering. I had an elderly passenger with dementia and it was providential that we weren't in an accident. It's now three breakdowns of the same kind. Obviously, another part is defective causing these operational failures. It's a safety risk and the three two VW repair shops, on three occasions, have not been able to detect it. I am afraid for my safety and that of my passengers. I can provide the repair invoices. Please look into this. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

There is currently a NHTSA recall on this vehicle (NHTSA recall 23V604, 2019 Jetta manufactured between Sept. 3, 2018, and Dec. 21, 2019) however Volkswagen says our VIN number is not included in their recall (VW recall number 28H7)

I live in Florida where it is very hot - one day my car doesn't turn on and I get the notice on my dashboard that says "STARTER SYSTEM FAULTY. SERVICE VEHICLE". It wont turn on again. Very similar to Recall #: 28H7 of VW. Was driving in hot temperature and dash displayed warning: "Starter system faulty. Please service vehicle" after a warning sound and message "Car Ignition Off. Please stop vehicle for safety." After this, all my electrical went out (from dash to blinkers to head lights to tail lights). However the car could still accelerate and brake.

This is the third occurrence of the vehicle engine shutting off without warning. Each time the instrument cluster displayed "Ignition switched off. Safety stop the vehicle" and "starter system faulty" warnings. After the first occurrence (see detailed report submitted on 07-12-24, NHTSA ID # 11601511) the vehicle was taken to a VW dealership on 07-12-24 in Albuquerque, NM. A detailed account of the problem was explained to the dealership and how all the symptoms matched the documentation on active Volkswagen recall #23V604000 (28H7). The dealership immediately said that even though the vehicle was the same year it was not part of the recall, and it would not restart if this was indeed the problem. We completely disagreed on this account as the problem as stated in the Volkswagen recall was related to a polyfuse which by design opens when heated and closes when it cools down. The dealership diagnosed the issue as electrical and replaced the battery ($400) and declared the problem fixed. On 07-30-24 and 07-31-24 vehicle experience same issue as occurred on 07-11-24. Each time the vehicle was parked in +100 F ambient conditions. Vehicle initially starts and when leaving parking lot, the engine suddenly shuts down. Instrument cluster displays same warnings "ignition switch off" and "starter system faulty". Attempts restart the vehicle are unsuccessful, but it appears after the interior of the vehicle has cooled sufficiently it finally restarts and continues to run. Please look into this issue. I see two recently reported issues occurring on 2019 Jetta's that the VIN is not included in the recall. It is not a coincidence when all the symptoms EXACTLY match those in the active Volkswagen recall. Volkswagen should not wait for a body count before action is taken, it is a known problem that is occurring outside of the initially identified recall. Once again this has the potential to result in a dangerous crash if the vehicle should shut itself off without warning.

Jul 18, 2024

the ignition switch fails while the car is in motion, causing shut off the engine and electrical system, this lead to almost had crash.

Jul 12, 2024

On 07-11-24 vehicle was started after sitting in parking lot. When driving vehicle in parking lot the vehicle engine suddenly shut off. Instrument cluster initially had "ignition switch off" then a second warning light showing "starter system faulty". The vehicle was restarted several times and the engine continued to shut off and display "starter system faulty". A short time later the vehicle was restarted and continued to run. At the time outside temperatures were in the high 90's with the indoor car temperature significantly higher as it was parked. A quick internet search revealed active Volkswagen recall #23V604000 (28H7) issued 08-29-23. Volkswagen was contacted on 07-12-24 and at the current time are not recognizing this vehicle as part of the recalled group. I was given case #06334060 for this call. The vehicle is experiencing the EXACT symptoms as stated in the recall notice. The vehicle is in the same year/model as the vehicles in the active recall. I believe that the current recall has not correctly identified all affected vehicles. This has a high potential of resulting in a dangerous situation as the vehicle shuts itself down with no warning.

VW Jetta should be included in the ignition switch recall. Problem started last year August on a trip out of state. After a day sitting in the hot parking lot on drive back car reported ignition switch failure and all electronics shut off and eventually the car shut off and wouldn't restart until the interior of the car cooled off. Once inside of car cooled down car was drivable again. Contacted dealer they stated they had not serviced another Jetta with this problem yet. They adivised to continue driving and see if problem occurs again. All winter (living in cold climate) it was no problem. In March as things warmed up problem occurred multiple times. Multiple occasions the car shut off in the middle of the road luckily no accidents occurred. Had car serviced at VW dealer, they were able to replicate problem and talked with VW field rep. who said to change the ignition switch. Since replacing the ignition switch my car has not had any issues anymore. I contacted VW Care and asked to add my car to the recall or reimburse my repair cost ($ 320) They refuse and insist that my car does not have the same problem as the recalled 2019/2020 models. I was fortunate that nobody hit me from behind when my car decided to shut off in the middle of a 55 mile an hour road. since the warning lights won't work when this problem occurs. This is a very serious problem and the remedy was to replace the ignition switch. I have the email conversation between the VW CARE rep as well as a copy of my repair bill. The last email I received from VW care states that my car is not part of the recall, that they can not add it to the recall and even though it presents with the exact same problem nothing can be done about it. Please let me know if you need any additional information Sincerely [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The incident occurred twice the first time the car stopped in the intersection and a notice came up with ignition failure; start vehicle engine: have vehicle serviced. All the electrical systems shut down except for the radio. No lights, monitor, turn signals, everything shut off except the engine kept running. I changed all the spark plugs but that did not solve the problem. When it gets really hot here in Vegas the cars ignition just fails. They have recalled 47,000 of these 2019 Jetta's for this problem but not mine. They want me to dish out money for something that is obviously their problem.

when getting into the car the ignition switch failed to start 8 times. This happens every time I enter the vehicle where I live which is a cold climate. The recall is suspected only to affect the car in hotter climates but my car has been affected in the cold. It stalled while I was driving as well and I was able to turn the car back on. On the screen, it said failed transmission. This recall has been mailed to me 5 months ago and is still not yet fixed. I have been paying for my car on time monthly and am struggling to drive my car to the ignition switch failing. The car stalling did not hurt me and luckily no one was behind me. volkswagen has recognized the issue and sent out a recall in the mail but It's taking so long to fix and was not supposed to stall like this. the warning light was that there was failed transmission. my car has been inspected by Fitzgerald and they are unable to do anything about it because there is no remedy for the issue at the moment.

There has been a recall out on my vehicle for the past 6 months. Previous to this recall being announced by Volkswagen I had issues with my vehicle starting, the dealership determined it was the ignition switch and replaced it out of my pocket. Since this recall being out I have noticed the same issue starting to come back. I have been in person to my local dealership and spoken to many managers as well as waited HOURS trying to contact VW Corporate. I have exhausted all ends and ultimately VW has put me into a position where my vehicle is no a reliable car to drive on day to day life having responsibilities. They have stated that I can have the current issue fixed (the recall) but it will be replaced with the same part and come out of my pocket as well as saying that I will run into this issue again until VW Corporate has come out with a solution and so far it has taken 6 months. I have waited patiently, as we all know, as time goes on the issue is progressing. My local dealership keeps trying to get me to trade in my vehicle but I should not have to take more money out of my pocket when this is a RECALL to begin with.

Whenever the outside temperature reached 85 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, all computer systems and electrical functions would shut off. If I was driving at the time, the engine would continue to run, but I wouldn't be able to use even the most basic functions -- blinkers, hazard lights, radio, air conditioning -- and all the gauges on the dashboard -- speedometer, gas gauge, etc. -- would stop working, creating a dangerous driving experience. If the car was already parked, or I came to a stop, the ignition would flutter and then shut off as soon as it was put into gear. And only start working again after the car had cooled down, oftentimes by having to dump cold water on the vehicle, or by parking it in the shade for an extended period of time.

Both times the shut down occurred it was over 80 degrees in the car at least. At least a week ago and then yesterday October 22nd. The car would start like normal but a few seconds later it would say "Please check the starter system" and then all the electricals would go out no ac, nothing on the dash, all the speedometers down to 0, but the car would still be running. But if you were to cut the car off you would just get the starter system message and it wont turn back on. The first time I took it to a mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong, the next day I took it to VW and they also couldn't find anything in their inspection. I see the recall #23v604 and it sounds pretty similar to what's happening.

The open recall on my vehicle regarding the ignition switch and polyfuse presents a serious safety risk to me and others on the road. The potential for engine stalling and electrical system failure creates a dangerous situation that could lead to accidents and injuries. Therefore, addressing this recall promptly and having the necessary repairs or replacements done is crucial to ensuring the safety of all road users.

Only on days where I leave my car in the direct heat under the sun for a few hours I go to get in and start and it starts up at first and then the dashboard displays "check starter system" soon after all the electrical work in the car shuts down and doesn't turn on again until the car cools down or when the sun goes down. I live in phoenix where it's hot everyday so this issue is happening frequently with my vehicle.

Sep 6, 2023

Starter Ignition failed on my screen as a turned on a street with oncoming traffic. Car shut down and engine stayed on. Has been happening when my car is sitting in the heat.Going to the dealership to get it diagnostic tomorrow.

Sep 5, 2023

Car stalled out while driving, restarted, car said, "check starter system". Restarted again, engine stayed running, no lights at all (brake, headlight or tail light), however the hazards still seemed to work.

Sep 5, 2023

While driving car ignition shuts off. Gas and breaks still work, but no lights, no speedometer, nothing else, ignition completely off. Has happened on 5 different occasions on days the temperature is 90 degrees. Volkswagen dealership aren't able to fix it.

Aug 21, 2023

Ignition gets very hot, when I put the key in the ignition, it also gets very hot, car will run for a minute or so and then lose power. The car shut off could be very dangerous if going down the road. Warning to check starter system came on.

Aug 16, 2023

When the vehicle gets hot, above 85 degrees Fahrenheit the electric system including, speedometer and other internal lighting as well brake lights and turn signals completely stop functioning. Windows and locking system is also affected. The engine remains on. But if the car is turned off, it will not turn back on.

Aug 15, 2023

While driving the 5 miles to the store, we got half way there and an error stating "check starter system" and to find a safe place to pull over. The cars engine remained running, allowing us to get to a grocery store parking lot, but all other mechanical instruments died. Screen backed out. Not able to see speed, non use of signal or break lights. After sitting in the parking lot for a few minutes, we tried starting the car up again. It started back up with no issues. We decided to try driving it back home to see if happened again. After about 2 miles of driving, the same error and screen black out happened again. We were able to safely get home, taking back roads to avoid traffic. Extremely unsafe to not have working tail/break lights or even a speedometer. Since my mechanic was already closed for the day, we looked online to see if we could troubleshoot. Finding this is a known issue and many people arrive reporting heat seems to trigger the issue. It was 103 out yesterday. This is my teen son's first car. We have only had it a couple months and this is the first time this had happened. It's also the first time it's been THIS hot (if that is in fact a factor to this issue), since having the car. I can't believe how many complaints there are for this same exact issue, yet VW is not recalling this. This is a huge safety concern. Very disappointing that my kid saved his money for this car and now it is going to have to sit parked, till we can get it addressed, because I will not allow a new driver to be in this vehicle. Dangerous!!

Aug 10, 2023

While driving, ignition shuts off. Vehicle relays “ignition off” message. Has only happened on 85+ degree days while car is in the sun. No mechanic has been able to diagnose and fix the issue

Aug 8, 2023

The vehicles infotainment or screen often malfunctions creating hazardous conditions. The monitor that is the only way to access certain vehicle setting and systems, intermittently shuts off completely, changes screens or settings, disconnects from cell phone or distorts audio and changes audio volume to inappropriate levels. The suspension during weather changes makes loud creaking noises and during cold months has choppy suspension that makes it difficult to see when going over imprefections or bumps, and during warm months is unreasonably bouncy creating the same issue. The blind spot monitoring seems to not detect a vehicle while it is actually in the blind spot and doesn’t produce the warning light or noise. The blind spot monitoring only detects the other vehicle once it is out of the blind spot and visible from the driver’s peripheral and continues to display until they have fully passed. It’s ridiculous this model year wasn’t fully recalled due to its extensive issues that affect almost all dimensions of the 2019 VW Jetta’s basic functionality, safety, and performance.

Car shut off while turning left. Display says check starting system. Car restarted

Jul 28, 2023

When vehicle would be in heat of over 80 degrees, car would start, I would start driving, then an alert saying “Check Starter System” would occur and all electrics would shut off. Couldn’t use turn signals or anything. Happened a few times and my car would sometimes even shut off completely if it occurred as I was stopped/at a red light. Took it to a mechanic that said it was the ignition switch/relay that was overheating and causing the problem. So original ignition switch on the car was the problem while under warm weather.

Jul 27, 2023

My VW Jetta 2019 car just stopped twice with “Check Starter System” error and failed to turn on right in the middle of the road which might have lead to some serious accident. Once on a light the steering and brakes both got locked and all the electrics (dash, radio etc) shut off and so had to somehow safely get on the side of the road and had to use the handbrake abruptly to stop the car which was a difficult situation. Tried turning on the engine again but it kept on giving me “CHECK IGNITION” switch and “STARTER SYSTEM” errors and all the electrical parts turned off including the engine. It could have been a fatal accident and calls for serious service negligence on VW part. I see so many complaints in different forums for the same ignition switch and electrical failure on 2019 VW Jetta models but never a recall from VW to fix the issue. That’s a big lapse in safety issue and Volkswagen should be sued for neglecting such life threatening damages which might lead to severe consequences like a fatal accident if car stops with no proper warning beforehand.

Jul 27, 2023

On hot days in the summer, when I start driving the car, a notice that states “systems start failure” appears. The air conditioning turns off. The speedometer turns off. The brake lights don’t work, and the turn signals do not work. The car still drives, but due to the brake lights turning off and turn signals not working, I believe this poses a safety risk to myself and others. I believe this to be an ignition switch problem, as many others have stated online that getting a replacement for the ignition switch has solved the problem. The problem has been reproduced by a service center. The problem has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives.

Jul 26, 2023

While driving the Please “check starter system” error and “ignition switch error” popped up and the dashboard died , AC died, no brake lights, no speedometer but the car kept running. There is no check engine light. I live in Texas where temperature is 105+ which could be the reason. This only happens if my car is sitting in the sun for hours, verses me driving it in the morning and then throughout the day. This is dangerous because I was on a busy highway, and should be a recall.

Jul 25, 2023

The ignition switch for my 2019 Jetta randomly went out, while driving the vehicle in the middle of summer, temperature on dash read 111, I'm assuming this caused the ac and radio to go out, as well as the speedometer and other tracking system's on the dashboard to display as if the car was not on when the engine was still running. I have read online in several places that this is a common issue for the 2019 Jetta's and at this point the ignition switch failure should be treated as a recall.

Jul 24, 2023

My car started fine, but turned off in the middle of my drive. I live in Las Vegas, NV so the extreme heat and a faulty car is very dangerous. There has been many issues with the ignition switch on the 2019 Jettas. Unfortunately the switch is on backorder.

Jul 19, 2023

Driving at 30 mph in 100 degree heat, a/c shut off, and a "check the starter system" warning appeared on my display. The temperature gauge flattened to cold as well.

Jul 18, 2023

The ignition switch for my 2019 Jetta randomly went out, while driving the vehicle in the middle of summer, this caused the AC and radio to go out, as well as the spedometer and other tracking system on the dashboard to display as if the car was not on when the engine was still running. I have read online in several places that this is a common issue for the 2019 Jettas and at this point the ignition switch failure should be treated as a recall. Volkswagon service initially diagnosed as faulty battery which did not resolve the issue and the same thing happened 7 days and $300 later. I was able to find the issue with a quick google search.

Jul 17, 2023

Hot day (~107f), car started fine but after a mile of driving ALL ELECTRICAL systems appeared to STOP with the following error: "Starter System Faulty. Please Service Vehicle." The engine kept going, and the car was driven home (with no signals, speedo, air conditioning, lights etc.) If this had happened in a more demanding situation (e.g. weather, night or traffic) there could have been an accident. There are numerous threads online about this happening to 2019 Jettas in hot weather, and the ignition switch being blamed. I recreated the issue in the heat of the day, but the car worked fine later on when the day cooled down.

Jul 17, 2023

Ignition system (available for inspection upon request) malfunctioned, which disallowed the engine from starting. After multiple attempts, the engine started and I was able to drive and indicate turns, but there was no dashboard display such as speed, gas level, etc. Since the first incident, this has happened 3 times. At one point while driving with no screen display, I forgot to turn off the option for the engine to stop when the car has come to a complete stop. When I stopped at a light, the engine stopped and I was unable to get it to start again for several minutes, causing me to block traffic. There was no warning prior to the failure, just beeping and a screen notification while it was failing. The problem has not been replicated/confirmed, and the vehicle has not been inspected since the issue began to happen. Each time this failure happens, it is during a hot day after the car has been parked in direct sunlight.

Jul 16, 2023

Car shut off but still running while driving. Check the starter system came on. Did it twice. Not sure because of heat but dash board and a/c shuts off but car still running.

Jul 14, 2023

As I was driving the vehicle the car just randomly shut off. It turned off the air conditioning and wiper blades as it was raining. It said to check starter system or ignition system or something like that. I recently had the software update recall done at the dealer also had a new battery installed by the dealer between two days. Also said something about checking the key battery. It has happened on two separate occasions this week alone.

Jul 14, 2023

When it's really hot outside my car while just shut off while driving. Then I get a "Please check the starter system" message. The radio,ac, and eveything electrical turns off as well. This is the second time it has happened in a month.

Jul 13, 2023

Left my work parking lot and my jetta said there was an ignition problem and “starter system failure”. Then all electronics systems went dark but the engine kept running, until I came to a stoplight and stopped. I pulled over and turned it off. Then restarted. This is VERY DANGEROUS

Jul 9, 2023

My 19 year old was driving down the road and all electrical systems in the car shut in the car and told her to check starter system.

Car turns off with a message relaying on the screen “please check starter system”

Jul 2, 2023

When interior gets hot, check starter system message displays and all gauges, air conditioning system, infotainment system and all associated systems become inoperable. This becomes especially dangerous as it will happen while driving.

Jul 2, 2023

A minute after starting my car sitting in a hot parking lot, the entire car and engine shut off. A message popped up saying “please check starter system”. I looked this up and seems to be an extremely common issues with 2019 Jettas, and everyone has had issues with getting it fixed. Mechanics have said there’s “no issue” with the car because it won’t shut off every time. Some even had their cars shut off on the highway. My car has about 25,000 miles and is in great shape. I’m terrified to drive it for safety reasons, and I don’t have money to take it in anywhere. I’m so disappointed there has not been a recall on this common, extremely dangerous issue. There were no prior warning lights or signs.

When interior gets hot, check starter system message displays and all gauges, AIR conditioning system, infotainment system and all associated systems become inoperable. This becomes especially dangerous as it will happen while driving.

Jun 27, 2023

Starter System Faulty. Please service vehicle. Warning shows on screen when high temperature outside. Car will not start/turn on if the weather is hot outside. I researched the issue and multiple 2019 Jetta users have the same issue when weather is hot outside.

Jun 21, 2023

Driving down the highway and received a “starter system failure” message. All electronics in the car shutoff. Engine continued to run normally.

Jun 17, 2023

I purchased the vehicle on 6/10/3023 and that evening I noticed a dashboard error message that the Rear View camera was unavailable. Due to my work schedule I was unable to get back to the dealership until Monday, 6/12/2023. On Monday I asked [XXX], my sales representative, and [XXX], a sales manager, what it meant and how to fix it. They offered Wes, a repair technician, to come look. [XXX] left rapidly and never returned, so I left for work. On 6/15/2023 I had the car inspected by my mechanic for an assessment and he stated that I needed a new electrical body harness for the repair. This part costs over $5K, plus labor; total estimate $12,742.14. My safety is at risk because this electrical issue not only renders (this list is not exhaustive): the back-up camera useless, but also the seat belt sensor, side mirror lights, and the front proximity sensors work only intermittently. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Jun 16, 2023

When the car sits in direct sunlight and the interior temperature raises above 100F, the car will start and all is well for a minute or so and then the ignition fails. Dash says check starter system and all gauges, clusters, infotainment system, interior and exterior lights turn off. The car thinks that it is off electronically but it still runs, shifts, and drives. Attached photo was taken after I left home, traveling on highway at ~55mph.

Jun 12, 2023

Driving my car in 85+ degree weather and an alert came on that said “check starter system,” “find a safe place to park,” “ignition shutting off.” My car shut off on the highway. A quick google search found that hundreds of people with 2019 jettas were having this exact same problem. This issue has now happened twice with my car, both when temperatures exceeded 85 degrees.

The contact stated that the “STOP Safely” message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

The Car lost all electrical components, gauges, turn signals, and possibly break lights while in operation. If I had been unlucky, I could have been rear-ended or ended up in an accident if my brake lights were not working and I could not tell how fast I was going. First, the car dinged and said "Please check starter system" while I was downshifting while coming to a stop. The engine remained running, but I lost all gauges, dashboard lights, cabin controls, and turn signals.

May 16, 2023

While driving my vehicle to a town 20 minutes away, as I was exiting the highway my vehicle turned off completely. Gave a “Ignition switched off, Please stop safely” message and shortly after popped up a “Please check starter system” message. This was on a fairly hot day. I was able to pull over, let it cool off and drive back home. I called the Vorderman Volkswagen in Fort Wayne Indiana and they told me the issue was my battery, paid $500 for a new battery. 3 weeks later on May 12th as I’m driving home from work, my vehicle turns off again and gives the same messages. At this point I’m very irritated because I explained to the dealership what I believe it is because MULTIPLE others have had the same issue and they ignored me. I’ve tried to explain to them this second time that it has something to do with the ignition switch but they keep telling me “nothing is wrong” they want to give my vehicle back unfixed and I feel very unsafe driving something that turns off while I’m driving it and doesn’t work unless it’s cooler outside.

THE CAR WILL JUST SHUT DOWN. IF THE CAR IS PARKED IN THE SUN IT WILL JUST RANDOMLY NOT START. SINCE THE TEMPATURES OUTSIDE HAVE GOTTEN WARMER IT HAS NOW DONE 3 TIMES: THE CAR WILL START FINE AS I AM DRIVING THE ELECTRICAL PANELS AND EVERYTHING SHUTS OFF BUT THE GAS STILL WORKS AND THE CAR SAYS CHECK STARTER SYSTEM. MY 16 YEAR OLDS DRIVE THIS CAR. THE INSTRUMENT PANELS ALL TURN OFF. THE CAR HAS ALSO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE WHILE IN MOTION THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DOESNT SHOW AND BECAUSE IT IS RANDOM MY MECHANIC CANNOT FIND THE MAIN PROBLEM AND PARTS RELATED TO THIS ARE SOLD OUT WITH VW DUE TO IF YOU LOOK EVERYONE IS HAVING THIS ISSUE. When my car gets hot from the sun it turns off my whole electrical system in the car including my radio and speedometer

Apr 24, 2023 Crash

The vehicle steering has been off and alignment when driving. My gas gauge has been off constantly, since I've owned the vehicle. I documented this many times and reported this to the dealership under warranty and Volkswagen care.

Apr 12, 2023

Vehicle parked under the sun, temperature reaching 85 degree, hotter inside the cabin. Vehicle started with no issues but "Check starter system" warning comes up and all the electrical component shut off its power, including all the gauge in the dashboard and radio. Headlight is not working as well after few min. Car drives (manual transmission) with no issues. When the car is placed under the shade/cools down, shows no problems. Some of owners reported the faulty ignition switch, part number 5Q1-905-865-A. Google search of "2019 Jetta check starter system" results in multiple complaints. The part in question is in national back order, suggesting the issue is more wide spread.

Mar 27, 2023

The car has an active grill shutter vulnerability where it could be damaged easily by snow and or rain while driving the vehicle It malfunctions, and according to internet traffic, it seems to malfunction often. To repair/replace this small motor THE ENTIRE FRONT BUMPER/GRILL assembly needs to be removed. It is not an easily repaired item outside of the dealership. And the cost to replace including parts and labor is about $1300 estimate for a simple shutter motor. This is not fair to the owners of these VW vehicles.

Mar 19, 2023

While driving, the following warning will appear “Starter system faulty! Service vehicle.” The instrument panel will then shut down entirely, and brake lights, headlights, and blinkers will not work. This can happen anywhere—on the highway traveling at 70 mph at night, for example. When the vehicle is pulled over and turned off, it will restart as normal—but while driving it might shut down again. There are numerous complaints on the internet, in VW forums and elsewhere, and the dealers do not seem to know how to correct the problem because it doesn’t happen all of the time. It is unpredictable. This creates an extraordinarily dangerous situation, and the vehicles should be recalled and VW should correct the issue immediately.

The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the failure electrical, child safety start, and stop defect, and other electrical features failed to function as needed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the ECM software was updated. The vehicle was repaired but the failure continued, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer who stated that the vehicle needed a battery replacement. The battery was replaced but the failure continued. The manufacturer was contacted, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 13,805.

I was driving on a active snowing highway at 7pm when an alert appeared on the dashboard to “check starter system” and “pull vehicle over…”. During this time im on the highway going about 6mph and everything electrical turned off including my headlights and windshield wipers turned off. I was able to activate my hazards and pull off the highway but due to the snow and everything electrical cutting off my windows fogged up and almost caused me to crash into a semi-truck. I have googled this issue and it seems to be very common for this specific vehicle.

I bought the car October 1 2022 around October 15th it shut off without and warning while crossing over a intersection on November 19th I was on i95 north and it shut off again with no warning I got to the side of the highway and it started I got about a mile up the highway and it shut off a 3rd time this time it said error stop/start

Oct 3, 2022

As I was driving, all gauges went black. The vehicle continued to run until I came to a complete stop then the engine stopped. It would start for a few minutes. When it did it would shut down when I put it in gear. After letting it cool down, it started and I was able to get home. It still happens. Sometimes the lights will work when it happens other time they won't. I got it diagnosed and the could find any thing wrong. The check starter system warning comes on as well as ignition switch warning. It seems to happen during hot days.

While driving yesterday afternoon, the electrical system shut down thrice. Everytime i had to restart the car. When it shuts off it pops up a notification that says “Please check the starter system”. Reddit has many complaints regarding the 2019 Jetta Shutoff problem while driving. https://www.reddit.com/r/jetta/comments/p5pmti/2019_jetta_shut_off_while_driving/

The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while at a complete stop, the vehicle would stall upon the depression of the accelerator pedal, with the ignition switch warning light illuminated. The contact also stated that the gear shifter would intermittently fail to move out of park(P) and the windows would fail to operate as needed. The manufacturer and the dealer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

On my recent drive on the 2019 Jetta, I was traveling at a speed of 10-15 miles when all of a sudden the dashboard went blank, including the turn signals, side, and front warning indicators. Though the car continued to be in motion, it was very disturbing to drive without visibility to the dashboard. I had to stop the car in a strip mall and then restart the car at which point the dashboard came on again. This was the second time this happened while the car was in operation. Let me know if other car owners have reported similar issues. I think this is a big Safety issue and will get drivers into accidents.

Jun 21, 2022

My car battery would not start, nor would the car click over. The system kept saying “turn off infotainment center” or “drive car to charge batter” but this did not allow for the car to be turned on. Prior to this issue, I had to reset the car infotainment center due to it not recognizing a cd or a Bluetooth connected device. This is in addition to me having to get work done, since purchase, to repair dimming headlights, window functions and other “electrical” aspects

Issue: 2019 VW Jetta, the problem first occurred at 46,000 miles and has occurred approximately 8 times while in operation both when at a full stop and in motion at speeds from 10 to 50mph. When this happens all electronics shut off, dashboard goes blank, to include turn signals, side and front warning indicators, head lights and brake lights. This appears to happen in elevated outside temperatures. The vehicle will still drive, however without any electronics, lights etc. Vehicle starts up again with full electronics after stopping and restarting engine, usually takes two or three attempts. This has put my safety and drivers around me at risk of accident. I took the vehicle to the VW dealership, they did not observe the problem to my knowledge but said diagnostics indicated the original battery was malfunctioning and needed replacement, which I had done, not by VW. After battery replacement and recoding of electronics according to VW specifications, same issue occurred again two days later. Dashboard warning message, “Please check starter system” appears when this failure happens. Also states pull over immediately and address problem. Research online indicates this is a common problem in VW’s and appears to be an electrical switch problem. See attached VW Dealership docs.

I have no lights inside or outside no turn signals or brake lights no heat, the engine still runs and drives but with the windows not working I cannot use hand signals. The hill start assist is dangerous. Unlike most hill start assists, the one in this car doesn’t let go when you release the clutch, it waits about 2-3 seconds every time. I’ve had several incidents with this but just recently I was starting on a not very steep hill and forgot about the fact I have to compensate for this system, and tried to start normally and stalled. Thankfully the person behind me was my friend and was paying attention, but people don’t usually expect a car to sit there not moving once the brake lights go off, and then shudder to a stop because it has just stalled, and is possible for rear end collisions, as well as other more dangerous ones to happen depending on the situation. The system is working as designed; I’ve heard many complaints from other people that theirs does the same thing. It is dangerous as it doesn’t let you move for 2-3 seconds even if you really need to in an emergency situation.

I PURCHASED THE 2019 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA IN DECEMBER OF 2018. THE VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS ROUGHLY 50K MILES. WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED IT HAD 38K MILES WHEN I FIRST NOTICED A WEIRD SMELL COMING FROM MY AIR VENTS. I WAS CURRENTLY DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN I NOTICED THAT SMELL, PULLED OVER AND OPENED THE HOOD TOO THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE BATTERY HAD EXPLODED!! I RIGHT AWAY CONTACTED VOLKSWAGEN CUSTOMER CARE AND NOTIFIED THEM OF THE INCIDENT THAT HAD JUST OCCURRED TO ME. THEY MENTIONED I HAD BUMPER TOO BUMPER WARRANTY, SO I TOOK IN THE CAR TOO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET BECAUSE THEY MENTIONED THAT THE BATTERY WAS NO LONGER COVERED. THE NEW BATTERY THAT WAS REPLACED ISN'T THE ORIGINAL ONE THAT CAME WITH THE CAR WHEN PURCHASED. I ALSO MENTIONED TOO THE SERVICE TECH THAT AIR BAG , ABS, BRAKE BOOSTER, CPU APPEARED ON MY SPEEDOMETER. THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE VEHICLE FOR ABOUT 2WEEKS AND ALSO NOTICED THAT THE ACID FROM THE BATTERY HAD MELTED DOWN THE WIRING HARNESS, AC LINES, AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS. I'M CURRENTLY STILL DEALING WITH CUSTOMER CAR BECAUSE NOTHING WAS DONE FROM THEIR END, EVERYDAY THE CAR HAS A NEW ISSUE, I CALL AND ALL THEY SAY IS TOO TAKE IT BACK AND THEY'LL TAKE A LOOK AT IT. I PURCHASED THIS NEW VEHICLE SO I WOULDN'T BE DEALING WITH ANY OF THESE PROBLEMS BUT IT TURNED OUT TO BE WORST!! I NO LONGER WANT TOO DEAL WITH THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE I GET NOTHING OUT OF IT, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF ANYTHING OF THIS COULD HELP ME OUT IN ANY WAY POSSIBLE!

WHAT I'M MOST CONCERNED ABOUT IS I'M UNABLE TO OPEN MY DOORS FROM THE INSIDE SOMETIMES, IT DOESN'T HAPPEN OFTEN BUT WHEN IT DOES IT'S FRUSTRATING AND UNSETTLING. IF I POSITION MY AIR VENT TOWARDS THE DOOR LATCH AND BLAST MY AIR CONDITIONING IT WILL OPEN AFTER A FEW MINUTES. MY LOCAL DEALER HAS TRIED TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM BUT HAS BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL, AS OF 42 DAYS AGO, I HAVE TRIED TO GET AN APPOINTMENT WITH A LOANER AT MULTIPLE DEALERS AND HAVE ALSO BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. ASIDE FROM THIS ISSUE, MY CAR HAS ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH IT'S WINDSHIELD WIPERS GOING OFF BY THEMSELVES AND WITH THE WINDOWS SEEMINGLY GETTING STUCK ON SOMETHING GOING UP OR DOWN AND WILL EITHER NOT CLOSE OR OPEN DURING WORSE EPISODES.

LOUD GRINDING NOISES FROM THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND A LOSS OF POWER WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP TO 35 MPH. AT HIGHER THAN 50 MPH I CAN FEEL SOMETHING RATTLING/VIBRATING IN THE PEDAL AND STEERING WHEEL. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TWICE AND THEY WON'T EVEN POP THE HOOD BEFORE TELLING ME IT'S NORMAL. ALSO IT WILL NOT STAY IN ECO MODE. I BELIEVE AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE CAUSES IT TO SWITCH OUT OF ECO MODE BUT THE BUTTON STILL SAYS IT'S IN ECO MODE. THE DISPLAY HOWEVER SAYS IT'S IN DRIVE MODE.

THE VEHICLE IS A 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE WILL STALL OUT WHEN COMING TO A STOP. NOT USER ERROR, SINCE THE STALLING HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN NEUTRAL - COASTING TO A STOP. STALL OUT IS VERY SOFT - AKIN TO JUST SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE. THIS HAPPENS NEARLY EVERY STOP AFTER RUNNING THE CAR FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES. THIS PHENOMENON IS REPEATABLE AND EXTREMELY UNSAFE.

I AM AT THE DEALER AND THEY ARE INSPECTING THE ISSUE. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS OF THIS ON PUBLIC FORUMS. IT SEEMS AS IF THE STEREO HEAD UNIT IS TOO POWERFUL FOR THE SPEAKERS OR IS IMPROPERLY ALLOCATING POWER TO THE SPEAKERS INSTEAD OF THE SUBWOOFER. IT IS DEFINITELY NOT RIGHT WHATEVER THE ISSUE IS.
