The contact owns a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, several unknown warning lights illuminated and remained illuminated. Additionally, while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that there were false DTC codes displayed while performing the diagnostic test. The vehicle was then taken the dealer and the contact was informed that a diagnostic test was needed to determine the cause of the failure, and the contact was informed that the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.

The component that failed is in the official dealer report. I am not an expert however definitely an issue with electrical, engine, steering and acceleration meter. The car shakes/jolts aggressively. Once the shaking of the vehicle begins it accelerates with the breaks being pressed in under a red light and also under parked mode. In the red light case the vehicle then turns off the steering wheel freezes and all power comes off. The shaking/jolting takes place as I am driving as well. Which I then have to pull to the right to ensure my safety and others. This is major safety concern as it accelerates /jolts forward which can cause harm to pedestrians crossing the street, having me enter crossing traffic causing a major accident to myself and others. I have the brakes pressed in having no control of the vehicle. The vehicle turning off as I am driving is a major safety concern as I can cause an issue specially going on higher speed like freeways. The steering wheel comes into a complete freeze once the vehicle turns off as I’m operating the vehicle which then does not allow me to control the movement of the vehicle if I want to pull to the right away from traffic to avoid collisions. Once the car looses electricity and the steering wheel freezes I have to force my car to the right or a safe space. I then have to take my car key off the ignition and then turn it back on in hopes that it does turn on. No warning lamps have turned on. My dashboard is cleared with no lights. The dealer in downtown Los Angeles was informed of this issue, inspected and the report did come back reporting manufacturing issues. My vehicle did have a steering wheel recall before which I assumed was resolved as I did previously visit their center to ensure I was safe driving and leaving the dealer I trusted that the issue was resolved by their expert and experienced personnel. I am not sure or it’s unknown if this might have anything to do with the current issue I have.

To Whom It May Concern. Good afternoon. I really need your help on this. This particular vehicle has a defective DEF emission system that renders the car inoperable when the DEF sensors start acting up. Between 2022-2023, I took this vehicle to the Volkswagen dealership on numerous times, over ten different times. This vehicle was still protected under a factory emissions DEF extended warranty. The engine mounted diesel injection pump was changed by me when the Volkswagen dealer refused to honor the defective diesel injection pump. The DEF emissions systems has had numerous issues including shutting off on the freeway due to defective DEF sensors. Between 2022-2023 I was forced to keep the vehicle on for up to 96 hours costing me considerable expenses in fuel, and abnormally high mechanical wear and tear on my vehicle because I was unable to turn the vehicle off due to a Volkswagen diesel no-restart emissions issue that can only be repaired at the Volkswagen dealership. VWOA has acted in extremely bad faith causing unnecessary hardship on their customers that erroneously purchased a Volkswagen Passat diesel with the DEF emission system. Volkswagen ripped me off by selling a defective vehicle, then refusing to honor their factory extended emissions warranty on the defective DEF systems. Please intervene. The clock spring is out on the vehicle again

Hi , My 2014 Passat driven by a family member struck a parked truck. Luckily, nobody was hurt! The parked car was not occupied and the driver of the Passat was able to exit the vehicle unharmed. The speed was about 35 mph and the air bags deployed. This front collision resulted in a major fire that totally destroyed the car. The insurance company (Progressive) is currently in the possession of the car. And one other important thing to note is that, about 2 years ago, this car was also involved in a different accident when it reared a car. That collision did not result in the deployment of the air bags but caused lots of damage. The radiator and lots of the plastic in the front needed replacement at that time. I don't recall the exact amount for the damage, but we ended up paying the full 2k deductible to get the car back.

Check engine comes on 2014 VW Passat TDI 68,000 miles. Dealer code shows NOx sensor is bad. This car is covered through 2024 and 120000 miles by VW extended emissions warranty due to Diesel emissions fraud settlement with US Government. VW refusing to honor warranty and make repair.

A faulty clockspring in the steering wheel failed so the driver air bag and the horn do not work. The car can’t pass a safety inspection. This is a faulty part that the NHTSA issued a recall for some years back (I believe in 2015). The replacement part has been back order for upwards of 9 months for 1000s of VWs in the US. If the cars cannot pass a state safety inspection there should be a safety recall issued immediately.

The clocksping in the steering wheel is broken, but the part has been backordered for over a year. The broken clockspring makes the horn and buttons on the steering wheel unusable and the airbag will not deploy.

I belive the clock spring has malfunctioned on my car, the air bag light won't go off and the horn does not work. This has put my safety at risk because twice last week a car almost side swiped me and I have no horn. I called the dealer and they said my particular model isn't covered under the recall but It says volkswagen passat models 2010-2014. I have not taken my car to the dealership yet. The airbag light and horn stopped working at the same time about a month ago and I have replace the the fuse and relay switch and the air bag light is still on and the horn still doesn't work.

Clock spring is broken, and no one has replacement parts. They have been backordered with Volkswagen for MONTHS. Air bag, horn, and steering wheel radio control do not work. Won't pass safety inspection.

The clock spring within the steering wheel has failed and is no longer functional. The airbag sensor warning light has come on. The horn no longer works, and I cannot warn drivers crossing over into my lane who may not see me in their blind spot. And as far as I understand, the main steering wheel airbag no longer works either. The idea that my main airbag system will not deploy in an event of accident is worrisome. I went to a dealership and informed them that its most likely a clock spring issue as I googled the issue; it’s quite common in their cars. They confirmed it for me, after taking a $139 ‘inspection’ fee which was no more than a tech scanning my car and checking the three main indicative problems I already reported to them. I was at about 120,090 miles at the time. I was informed that their clock spring warranty only covers up to 120,000 miles but was assured they will most likely be able to cover it after talking with the Volkswagen representative. It wasn’t covered. I was then told it would be another $600 to use their services, and the part would take a few weeks to come in. I later called the parts department as I did not want to pay an exorbitant labor fee; the inspection fee was insult enough. I was informed the parts department is five months backordered. So now, I’m either forced to pay for their service to get the part within a few weeks or wait five months from the parts department all the while driving with no horn or wheel airbag. I'm now forced to use their services, which run at a premium compared to normal mechanics, if I wish to have basic safety features on my car. This seems exploitative of the consumer on a safety problem that has persisted for years, and one Volkswagen is responsible for causing with their faulty manufacturing.

MY 2014 VW PASSAT TURBO HAS AN ISSUE WITH NO HORN, NOTHING ON STEERING WHEEL WORKS AND AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON THE DASH. THE LOCAL VW DEALSHIP MOSES VW OF BARBROURSVILLE, WV TOLD ME THE AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY AT THIS TIME BC THE CLOCK SPRING NEEDS REPLACED. VW REPS TOLD ME IT IS NOT A RECALL JUST AN EXTENTION OF WARRANTY TO 120,000 MILES. MY CAR HAS 131,000 OF COURSE. MY WIFE DRIVES THIS CAR AND WAS ALMOST IN A BAD WRECK BC SHE HAD NO HORN AND THE BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY WHICH IS VERY SCARY. HOW IS THIS NOT A RECALL? I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO IN ARIZONA. IT HAS ONLY EVER BEEN SERVICED BY VOLKWAGEN DEALERSHIPS. SINCE HAVING THE CAR, I HAVE HAD TO HAVE ITS TURBO REPAIRED, NEW FUEL LINES PUT IN, SEVERAL ELECTRONIC PARTS, AND FINALLY ON MY WAY TO SCHOOL FROM BOSTON TO PITTSBURGH, MY ENGINE STARTS SMOKING. AFTER THIS INCIDENT IT WENT TO 'MINUTEMAN VOLKSWAGEN' JUST OUTSIDE OF BOSTON, WHERE THE ISSUE WAS STILL NOT ABLE TO BE RESOLVED. I THEN HAD TO HAVE THE CAR SHIPPED OUT OF POCKET TO A VOLKWAGEN DEALERSHIP IN PITTSBURGH WHERE A NEW ELECTRONICS UNIT WAS PUT IN. I WAS ASSURED AFTER THIS ELECTRONIC UNIT WAS INSTALLED, MY CAR WOULD BE BACK TO NORMAL, AS THIS WAS NOT AN ENGINE ISSUE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. TODAY I RECEIVE A CALL INFORMING ME THAT THE ELECTRONICS UNIT WAS INSTALLED AND IT TURNS OUT THAT IT IS, IN FACT, AN ENGINE ISSUE. I WAS IN SERIOUS DANGER AT THE TIME MY ENGINE STARTED SMOKING. MY FAMILY HAS FUNDS AND ARE MORE THAN WILLING TO TAKE WHATEVER STEPS NECESSARY TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. BLUE TOOTH DISABLES MY ABILITY TO MAKE OR RECEIVE A CALL WHILE IN THE CAR. RADIO CUTS OFF OR NEVER COMES ON WHILE DRIVING OR STATIONARY. TELEPHONE VOICE COMMAND IS STUCK IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND EVEN DEALER COULDN'T GET IT TO CHANGE BACK TO ENGLISH COMMANDS. DRIVERS DOOR LOCK STICKS AND WON'T OPEN FROM OUTSIDE AND SOMETIMES INSIDE. I HAD TURNED MY CAR ON AND NOTICED MY AIRBAG LIGHT HAD COME ON AND ALL MY CONTROLS AND HORN HAD STOPPED WORKING. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. I TOOK IT INTO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY SHOWED ME A RECALL THAT HAPPENED IN 2015. THE RECALL SAID THE AIRBAG CLOCK SPRING MAY FAIL AND THAT THIS COULD EFFECT ALL CONTROLS, INCLUDING THE HORN. (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V483000) THEY ASKED ME TO LOOK INTO THIS BEFORE FIXING. SO, I CALLED THE VOLKSWAGEN SERVICE CENTER TO CHECK, AND UNFORTUNATELY MY CAR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL, EVEN THOUGH IT SAYS 2012-2014 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT THE COST OF THIS HAPPENING TO MY CAR IS OVER $800.00. NOTHING I DID TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN, IT JUST HAPPENED. I AM BAFFLED THAT THIS WAS A RECALL IN THE PAST AND ONLY COVERED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF VINS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPROGRAMMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000.

THE PROBLEM BELOW WAS FIRST EXPERIENCED WHEN THE CAR WAS STATIONARY ON A CITY STREET. THE DRIVER DOOR FAILS TO OPEN AFTER BEING EXPOSED TO COLD TEMPERATURES OF ABOUT 32F OR LESS. THE EXTERIOR HANDLE BEHAVES AS USUAL, BUT DOES NOT DISENGAGE THE LATCH LOCATED IN THE DOOR JAM. DURING THESE EPISODES, THE INTERIOR HANDLE HAS A UNNATURAL AMOUNT OF RESISTANCE, SO MUCH SO THAT THE OPERATOR WILL CEASE PULLING ON THE HANDLE IN FEAR OF DAMAGING THE COMPONENTS. SOMETIMES THE DOOR WILL REGAIN IT'S NORMAL OPERATION AFTER PRESSING THE LOCK AND UNLOCK BUTTON MULTIPLE TIMES ON THE INTERIOR DRIVERS SIDE PANEL. LOCKING AND UNLOCKING THE CAR FROM THE PASSENGER'S PANEL WILL NOT YIELD THE SAME RESULTS. WHEN IT'S EXECUTED FROM THE PASSENGER PANEL, THE DRIVERS DOOR LOCK DOES NOT AUDIBLY ENGAGE AND DISENGAGE. PLEASE NOTE, EVEN AFTER MANAGING TO OPEN THE DOOR AT THE BEGINNING OF A TRIP, DOES NOT MEAN IT WILL OPEN WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT YOUR DESTINATION. I'VE EXPERIENCE THIS MULTIPLE TIMES WHEN DEPARTING MY PLACE OF RESIDENCE (DID NOT LEAVE UNTIL THE DOOR WAS 'FIXED') AND THEN ARRIVING AT WORK. THIS ISSUE IS WELL KNOWN IN THE MORE RECENT MODELS OF VOLKSWAGEN PASSATS AS SEARCH ENGINES YIELD A MULTITUDE OF RESULTS. IT WAS FIRST NOTICED IN THE EARLY MONTHS OF 2019, DID NOT PERSIST OVER THE SUMMER, AND BEGAN AGAIN IN NOVEMBER OF 2019.

THE PROBLEM I'M HAVING WITH MY 2014 PASSAT IS THAT ONE DAY OUT THE BLUE MY AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. I PARKED AND TURN OF THE CAR THINKING THAT WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. WHEN I STARTED MY CAR BACK UP, THE AIRBAG IS STILL ON AND NOW THE HORN AND ALSO THE BUTTONS ON THE STEERING WHEEL ISN'T WORKING ANYMORE. I HAVE NOT HIT ANYTHING OR HAD ANY ACCIDENTS PERIOD. I SEE MANY COMPLAINTS FROM VW OWNERS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE....BUT I DON'T SEE ANY RECALLS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS A BIG ISSUE FOR ME BECAUSE I LIVE IN ILLINOIS AND MY CAR HORN DOESN'T WORK.

AIR BAG SIGN CAME ON AGAIN AND THERE WAS ANOTHER SHORT IN A WIRE, CLOCK SPRING HAD TO BE REPLACED THREE TIMES. FAULTY WIRES AND CLOCK SPRING.

WHILE THE CAR WAS STATIONARY, WHEN I STARTED IT AFTER WORK, I BACKED OUT OF MY PARKING PLACE AND MY AIRBAG ERROR LIGHT CAME ON. THERE WERE NO NOISES. I PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND TURNED IT OFF. I THEN TURNED IT BACK ON AND NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS AND HORN WERE ALSO NOT WORKING. I CALLED MY HUSBAND, WHO USED GOOGLE TO DETERMINE MY CLOCK SPOOL HAS FAILED AND MY VIN ISN'T PART OF A SAFETY RECALL BUT THE GOVERNMENT HAS DOCUMENTED IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS CAR. PLEASE EXPAND YOUR RECALL TO INCLUDE PROTECTING EVERYONE WITH THIS ISSUE, I DON'T BELIEVE CONSUMERS SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE REPAIRS AS THEY ARE NOT MAINTENANCE RELATED, BUT RATHER, FAILURE OF MANUFACTURER EQUIPMENT.

IN AUGUST OF 2017, MY AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AND MY HORN STOPPED WORKING. THERE WAS ALSO A CLICKING SOUND WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO VOLKSWAGEN AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE CLOCK SPRING HAD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. AFTER CONDUCTING SOME RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT OTHER 2014 PASSATS HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME EXACT ISSUE. MY VIN WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL, AND SO I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR A NEW CLOCK SPRING. I BELIEVE THAT THE VOLKSWAGEN RECALL WAS NOT BROAD ENOUGH TO COVER ALL VEHICLES AFFECTED. I REPORTED THIS TO THE NHTSA AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. HOWEVER, ABOUT 6 MONTHS LATER, MY VEHICLE BEGAN HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE SECOND CLOCK SPRING HAD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. BECAUSE THE PART WAS NEW, VOLKSWAGEN COVERED THE REPAIRS. I DID NOT REPORT THIS SECOND OCCURRENCE OF CLOCK SPRING FAILURE AT THE TIME. I AM REPORTING THE RE-OCCURRENCE OF THE CLOCK SPRING FAILURE NOW, AS I STILL HOPE THE INITIAL RECALL WILL BE EXPANDED AND THAT I WILL GET REFUNDED FROM REPLACING IT THE FIRST TIME. I HOPE THIS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CAN HELP WITH ANY ONGOING INVESTIGATIONS. I AM PROVIDING DOCUMENTATION OF BOTH INSTANCES OF CLOCK SPRING FAILURE IN MY 2014 PASSAT.

I HAD JUST STARTED THE CAR. AFTER BRINGING THE CAR TO A DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED, IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY CLOCK SPRING. THE REPLACEMENT COST IS $637 AND THE CLOSEST DEALER IS 45 MILES AWAY. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS THE AIR BAG, HORN AND OTHER STEERING WHEEL FEATURES DO NOT WORK. AFTER RESEARCHING I'VE COME TO REALIZE THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES EFFECTED BY THIS AND NO RECALL.

FIRST OFF, THE BREAD STARTED GIVING ME TROUBLE A COUPLE WEEKS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT VW OF THE WOODLANDS EXCLAIMED THAT THERE WAS NO ISSUE AND THAT THE BRAKE PADS HAD A FEW ROCKS IN BETWEEN THEM. AS THE WEEKS PASSED THE ISSUE GRADUALLY GOT WORST AND I COULD FEEL THE BRAKES GRIND WHEN I PROCEEDED TO COME TO A STOP. NOW THE BRAKES ARE COMPLETELY JACKED UP AND I WILL HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO HAVE THEM REPAIRED. MY SECOND PROBLEM IS THE ELECTRICAL ISSUE THAT I'VE ENCOUNTERED. THIS DATES BACK TO AT LEAST 3 WEEKS AFTER BUYING THE CAR. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO THEM AND HAVE EVEN TAKEN THE VEHICLE IN TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT, BUT YET AGAIN I WAS GIVEN AN EXCUSE. "YOUR ALTERNATOR NEEDS TO BE CHANGED!" I WAS TOLD. I COULDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY THE ALTERNATOR WAS PREPARING TO GO OUT AFTER ONLY HAVING THE CAR FOR 5 MONTHS. BUT THAT WAS NOT THE FIXTURE OF MY PROBLEM. THE DASH BOARD LIKES COME ON AND GOES OFF REPEATEDLY IVER TIME AND I HAVE BEEN TAKING A PICTURE EACH TIME IT HAPPENS FOR MY DOCUMENTATION. IT'S VERY UNPROFESSIONAL WHAT GOES ON WITH THESE CAR DEALERSHIPS AND HOW THEY GET OVER ON PEOPLE. THIS 2014 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT IS A BUST AND SHOULD BE RECALLED.

HAD THE RECALL COMPLETED AND MAYBE WEEKS LATER MY CLOCK SPRING GOES OUT (TOOK A RIGHT TURN, HEARD A CLICK, AND THE "SEATBELT AIRBAG MALFUNCTION" LIGHT TURNED ON) ALL THE CONTROLS ON MY STEERING WHEEL GO OUT, INCLUDING THE HORN. I TAKE IT IT TO VW IN SCOTTSDALE SHORTLY AFTER THIS HAPPENED AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT IS NOT RELATED, NOT COVERED, AND THAT MY CAR WAS NOT PART OF THE TAKATA RECALL ..(ON THEIR WEBSITE IT STATES 2012-2014 PASSAT INCLUDED IN THE REACALL) THE SERVICE MANAGER I SPOKE WITH SAID THAT HE HAS NEVER HEARD OF THE CLOCK SPRING GOING OUT ON ITS OWN. LITTLE FISHY HOW NOTHING IS WRONG WITH MY CAR, I GET THE RECALL DONE, AND WEEKS AFTER MY CLOCK SPRING GOES OUT (WHICH IS RELATED TO THE AIRBAG!) AND TOLD ME IT WOULD BE ABOUT $875 TO FIX! NOW VW SERVICE DEALERSHIP IN SALINAS SAID THERE IS NO RECALL ON MY CAR EVEN THOUGH WWW.SAFERGOV STILL SHOWS AN INCOMPLETE RECALL. NOW MY HORN STOPPED WORKING,THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS LIT ON THE DASHBOARD AND MY STEERING WHEEL IS MAKING NOISES WHEN I'M STEERING. THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION. KEEPING IN MIND THE KIND OF TAMPERING AND MISHANDLING THAT IT WOULD NEED TO BREAK A CLUTCH I COMPLAINED TO VW ABOUT THIS AND THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING TO HELP. INSTEAD I AM LEFT WITH A HEFT BILL TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, AND, WILL PROBABLY NEED TO BUY A NEW CAR ANYWAY AS I WOULD NOT ENDANGER MY LIFE AND THAT OF MY CHILDREN DRIVING A CAR WITH SOME SERIOUS ENGINEERING AND/DESIGN ISSUES THAT VW WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR. I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED THIS 2014 VW PASSAT FROM NISSAN AND THEY DID NOT REVEAL ALL THE RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE! I'M REALLY DISSATISFIED WITH THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP AS I FEEL THIS IS BEING DECEITFUL, NOT TO MENTION VERY UNSAFE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. DISHONEST!!!!! TO SAY THE LEAST!

I HAVE HAD SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THE TSI SEL NAVIGATION AND RADIO SYSTEM IN MY CAR. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH YOU CANNOT TOUCH ANY BUTTONS UNTIL THIS SYSTEM IS FULLY UP AND RUNNING. IT IS EXTREMELY SLOW AT START UP. MOST OF THE TIME I CAN FINISH MY BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY EVEN BEFORE THE BACK UP CAMERA COMES ON. ON A FEW OCCASIONS I HAVE STARTED THE VEHICLE AND THE RADIO WILL SUDDENLY GO TO FULL VOLUME. I HAVE HAD THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM LOCK UP ON ME. ONCE WE WERE DRIVING IN TENNESSEE AND PULLED OFF TO GET SOME GAS, WELL THIS COMPLETELY CONFUSED THE SYSTEM AND IT DECIDED TO LOCK UP ONCE WE ENTERED BACK ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE AND TURN THE CAR OFF FOR A WHILE AND THEN REPROGRAM MY DESTINATION. ANOTHER TIME ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK THE SYSTEM LOCKED AND WOULD NOT LET ME GET TO ANY OTHER SCREEN. I HAVE HAD TIMES WHEN THE SYSTEM NEVER BOOTS COMPLETELY AND STAYS WITH THE MESSAGE OF "SYSTEM STARTING". OF COURSE THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT REPEAT THE ISSUES AND FLAT OUT TOLD ME THEY DON'T WORK ON THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE JUNK AND THEY KNOW THAT THEY ARE SLOW AND IN ADEQUATE. PERSONALLY IF VW KNOWS THEY ARE CRAP THEY SHOULD GIVE US THE UPGRADES THEY DID TO THE NEWER MODELS. I KNOW I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE BECAUSE I HAVE TALKED WITH OTHERS WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS.

DEALERSHIP STATED CHEWED WIRES FROM SQUIRRELS & DOES NOT COVER UNDER WARRANTY. 1ST TIME $2,700. 2ND TIME $700. LEARNED OF SOY-BASED COATING ON WIRES. BACKUP CAMERA/NAVIGATION/RADIO SYSTEM SYSTEM DOES NOT WORKING IN A CONSISTENT MANNER (CAMERA WORKS WHEN IT WANTS TO-BIG SAFETY CONCERN, SCREEN GOES BLANK, ETC.). RADIO/NAVIGATION CONTROLS ARE INOPERABLE AT RANDOM OCCASIONS WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION OR EVEN AT A STOP POSITION. RADIO SCREEN GOES BLANK EVEN IF RADIO IS ON AND USER IS UNABLE TO CONTROL IT FOR UP TO A FEW MINUTES. ON 2 OCCASIONS, EVEN AFTER TURNING THE ENTIRE CAR ON AND OFF MULTIPLE TIMES THE RADIO WAS ON BUT ALL CONTROLS WERE INOPERABLE AND UNABLE TO TURN OFF. EVENTUALLY THE SYSTEM BECAME OPERABLE A FEW MINUTES LATER. SAFETY ISSUE HAS BEEN DISCUSSED WITH VW DEALER AND THEY STATED VW KNOWS ABOUT ALL THE OWNER INQUIRIES INTO THIS ISSUE BUT IT HAS YET TO MAKE A RECALL. MY CONCERN IS THAT BACKUP CAMERA DOES NOT WORK AS IT SHOULD AND THEREFORE THE SAFETY FEATURE THAT THE VEHICLE CAME WITH DOES NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. THIS CAUSES THE DRIVER TO GO IN REVERSE WITH ONLY THE HELP OF MIRRORS. IF SAFETY EQUIPMENT DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY THEN IT SHOULD BE REPLACED. SECOND, WHEN THE SYSTEM CONTROLS MALFUNCTION THE VOLUME AND ON/OFF BUTTONS CANNOT BE USED AND THEREFORE DRIVER IS LEFT FOCUSING ON HOW TO FIX THIS ISSUE NOT ON KEEPING THEIR EYES ON THE ROAD. AS PER MY DISCUSSION BOTH WITH THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT CORPORATE OFFICE, THEY ADMITTED TO THE RECURRING ISSUE FOR MANY VW OWNERS BUT SAID IT HAD NOT BECOME A BIG ENOUGH ISSUE OR SAFETY CONCERN SO THERE WAS NOT RECALL. MY QUESTION IS IF SYSTEM (BACKUP CAMERA/RADIO/NAVIGATION) IS ALREADY A DOCUMENTED ISSUE FOR MANY OWNERS AND DOES NOT ALLOW A SAFETY FEATURE TO WORK PROPERLY (BACKUP CAMERA) OR CAN CAUSE A DISTRACTION FOR A VEHICLE OPERATOR THEN WHY IS NOT A RECALL. I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW VEHICLE WITH THE EXPECTATION THAT ALL EQUIPMENT WOULD WORK AS DESCRIBED.

SINCE PURCHASED WE HAVE FOUND THE RNS-510 RADIO NAVIGATION ASYSTEM TO BE A DANGEROUS ITEM THAT VOLKSWAGEN HAS KNOWN ABOUT FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. THEIR TECH TIPS NUMBER, TT 91-13-01 DATED 2/8/2013, UPDATED ON 5/9/2014 BASICALLY TELLS THE CAR OWNER TO JUST LIVE WITH IT. I THINK NOT SINCE IT IS DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING. IN SPEAKING WITH VW TECHS AT A NUMBER OF DEALERSHIPS I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS SYSTEM IS , "CRAP', "SUCKS", " IS UNDERPOWERED", "HAS BEEN A PROBLEM SINCE IT WAS INTRODUCED", "IS A PAIN IN THE [XXX]", "WILL NEVER WORK RIGHT BECAUSE IT IS UNDERPOWERED". MY WIFE IS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT BECAUSE OF CONCERNS WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED RADIO NAVIGATION SYSTEM. WHEN PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE AND WAITING FROM 3-7 SECONDS THE REARVIEW CAMERA SHOWS A PICTURE.WHEN PLACED IN DRIVE THE REARVIEW CAMERA STAYS ON THE SCREEN FOR AROUND 8-9 SECONDS. MY WIFE HAS FOUND THIS DISTRACTING AND DANGEROUS IN MOVING FORWARD BUT HAVING A REAR VIEW STILL VISIBLE ON THE SCREEN TAKING THE DRIVERS ATTENTION FROM CONCENTRATING ON THE ROAD AHEAD. THE RADIO TOUCH SCREEN IS ALSO A PROBLEM THAT AT TIMES REQUIRES MULTIPLE TOUCHES TO GET A CHANNEL CHANGE, AGAIN A DISTRACTION TO THE DRIVE. NOW THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM IN THIS UNIT ALSO IS A PAIN. WHEN MY WIFE WOULD USE THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM THE MAP WOULD FREEZE UP ON THE ORIGINAL STREETS AND NOT PROGRESS AS SHE WENT FORWARD. I TRIED ALL OF THESE THINGS AND AGREE COMPLETELY. THIS UNIT IS GARBAGE THAT IS A BIG DISTRACTION THAT VW HAS KNOWN ABOUT SINCE THE RNS-510 WAS FIRST INTRODUCED. THE RNS-510 CAME IN MY PASSAT SEL PREMIUM WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE TOP END PASSAT. ONE WOULD THINK THAT SUCH A VEHICLE WOULD CONTAIN A UNIT THAT WOULD FUNCTION IN A SAFE MANNER. I THINK THIS IS THE TYPE OF DEFECTIVE PART THAT SHOULD REQUIRE A RECALL. IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, SUBMERGING IN WATER, FIRE, OR OTHER TYPE INCIDENT, THERE IS SIGNIFICANT RISK, SHOULD THE DRIVER NEED TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. I HAVE CALLED VOLKSWAGEN CUSTOMER CARE ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS (CASE NUMBERS ARE DOCUMENTED, CALLS RECORDED), ONLY TO BE REASSURED THAT THEY HAVE NOT HAD ANY OTHER CALLS REGARDING THIS.
