Instrument panel shuts down while driving on street. I believe it is the central electronic module that fails. It has happened numerous times and it is unsafe to drive without a speedometer, tachometer, odometer fuel gauge, and temperature gauge. It has now stopped altogether. Gauges just sit there and bounce
Unsure of what the issue is with the vehicle but smells like gas in my garage and I found a recall I was never notified about I moved from Washington to Las Vegas and never received any info regarding the fuel pump recall as well as a noise that’s been going on for a year now when I drive at 60 miles an hour I’ve had it looked at and no one seems to know what that issue is
Unknown..but water accumulated under the passenger seat under the amp and electrical components after a storm or rainy day.and its a lot of water when I brake i can hear a water fall..and water rushing and moving along the bottom. Of the car as I am steering im worried that the wiring and electrical will be damaged by water exposure the battery always dies wires soaked and sitting in water underneath passenger and never can completely get the moisture smell out of front seat area..mildew..why is this water leaking or not draining correctly ??
On May 26, 2022, I was stuck in traffic for four hours, and the car's CEM (central electronic module) overheated causing the dashboard to shut down three times, meaning I lost all instrument readings. After each time the dashboard shut down, I had to pull over and reset fuse #27 to have the dashboard come back online temporarily. Because the CEM was already overheated due to its design flaw with improper ventilation, the dashboard would shut down again and again. A Google search would show this is a very common issue for 2004 Volvo models and before. Driving without any instrument readings is totally unsafe. I strongly urge you to force Volvo to issue a recall for 2004 and before models and fix the CEM overheating problem.
While driving on the highway "SRS urgent" text came on, also hear clicking sounds under dash on driver side, then dashboard indicator lights completely disappear (speed, fuel, temperature, etc) . Extremely hot under driver side dash. Fortunately, still able to steer and brake. This has happened twice now. Mechanic believes most likely CEM failure or DIM failure. My vehicle also has a wet A-pillar fabric (Volvo forums indicate possible cause of failure). I removed drivers A-pillar and found a clogged drain tube from the sunroof. However, did not notice any obvious signs of water inside the vehicle, though it hasnt rained for over a month when this happened.

SIMILAR TO MANY OTHERS, WHILE DRIVING OUR 2004 VOLVO XC90, WE HEAR A CLICK, THEN THE CLIMATE, RADIO AND WINDSHIELD WIPERS (IF ON) SHUT OFF AND THEIR DISPLAY LIGHTS BLACK OUT, THEN ANOTHER CLICK IN A FRACTION OF A SECOND AND THEY COME BACK ON. THIS WAS HAPPENING RANDOMLY, AND NOTHING ELSE WAS AFFECTED, UNTIL THIS WEEKEND, WHILE ON A TRIP. WE WERE DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS, OUTSIDE TEMP IN THE 80'S, NO RAIN, AVERAGE SPEED ABOUT 70MPH. IT HAPPENED A FEW TIMES OVER ABOUT 45 MINUTES, THEN BEGAN HAPPENING EVERY 5 MILES OR SO. WHEN I TURNED UP THE AC FAN, WITHIN ABOUT A MINUTE IT CLICKED AND WE LOST THE USUAL THINGS, BUT THEY DID NOT COME BACK ON. THEN WE HEARD ANOTHER CLICK AND LOST ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTING AND CONTROLS; WE COULD NOT SEE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, THE CLIMATE CONTROL WAS BLOWING HOT AIR AND COULD NOT BE SHUT OFF OR TURNED DOWN, AND WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT SPEED WE WERE GOING AS IT WAS NIGHTTIME. EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING AND DANGEROUS. WE MADE IT TO THE FIRST EXIT THAT HAD A GAS STATION AND STOPPED. THE CAR WAS VERY HARD TO ACCELERATE WHEN WE GOT OFF AT THE EXIT AS WELL. I WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE WINDOWS BUT WHEN I OPENED THE MOON ROOF, IT STOPPED HALF WAY AND THEN WOULD NOT CLOSE OR OPEN. WE WERE STRANDED FOR HOURS AWAITING A FAMILY MEMBER TO COME GET US AND THEN HOURS LONGER WAITING FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE TOWED. 2004 VOLVO XC90 SUDDEN ENGINE STALL WITH LOSE OF HEADLIGHTS: I WAS TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE AT NIGHT WITH THE CRUISE SET AT 75 MPH WHEN SUDDENLY IT WAS LIKE SOMEONE TURNED THE IGNITION KEY TO OFF FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS, AND THEN TURNED THE KEY BACK ON WITHOUT RESTARTING THE ENGINE. WITH ALL THE WARNING LAMPS ILLUMINATED, AND THE ENGINE AT A STALL I PULLED INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE, AND STOPPED. I THEN SHIFTED TO PARK AND ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, WHERE IT TOOK SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO START. THE HEADLIGHTS DID NOT STOP WORKING WHILE PULLING OVER, AND WHEN I STOPPED I SWITCHED THE LIGHTS OFF BEFORE I RESTARTED THE ENGINE. THE FIRST THING AT MIND WAS A FUEL PUMP THAT WAS STARTING TO ACT UP. AFTER RESTARTING I REVVED THE ENGINE UP A FEW QUICK TIMES (TO CLEAR THE ENGINES THROAT). I THEN GOT BACK ON THE INTERSTATE ACCELERATING TO 75 MPH , BUT DOING SO MANUALLY THIS TIME(NO CRUISE CONTROL). ABOUT 10 MIN HAD PASSED WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE STARTED LOSING POWER AS I WAS HAVING TO PRESS THE ACCELERATOR HARDER TO MAINTAIN SPEED. WHILE STILL COASTING AT 65 MPH OR SO I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL, AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE ENGINE, WHEN I TURNED THE KEY TO THE START POSITION I LOST ALL THE LIGHTS, I QUICKLY RELEASED THE KEY TO THE ON POSITION, AND THE LIGHTS REMAINED OFF. I QUICKLY PULLED TO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND USED THE FORCE TO AVOID THE GUARDRAIL AND THE DITCH. ALL THE WARNING LIGHT WERE ILLUMINATED, AND THE ENGINE WAS AT A STALL. I THEN TURNED THE IGNITION KEY OFF AND THEN BACK ON, AND THAT RESTORED THE HEADLIGHTS. IT TOOK 5-8 ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE ENGINE, AND AGAIN I'M THINKING FUEL PUMP ACTING UP. EACH TIME I ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE ENGINE IT WOULD SPIT AND SPUTTER LIKE IF THE FUEL PUMP WERE ONLY DELIVERING HALF THE PRESSURE NEEDED FOR THE FUEL INJECTORS. AFTER THE ENGINE RESTARTED I MADE IT HOME, AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT ARISEN SINCE,

DOESN'T DO IT ON TRIPS AROUND TOWN. CALLED VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA AND THEY DENIED ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CEM AND SAID SINCE IT'S AN '04 WITH 85,000 MILES THAT I'M OUT OF WARRANTY AND THEY CAN OFFER NO HELP.

WE ARE AWARE OF THE FACT THAT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT NEW TO NHTSA AND THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED SEVERAL REPORTS ON IT ALREADY. IT APPEARS THAT THE PROBLEM HAS TO DO WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL, AND EVER SINCE THE INCIDENT WE HAVE BEEN DRIVING THE CAR WITHOUT ENGAGING IT WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. THE MILEAGE ON THE CAR IS 138,000 MILES. THE PROBLEM OCCURRED WHEN ENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL ON AN UPHILL SLOPE. WE SPECULATE THAT IT MIGHT BE CAUSED BY ENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL AT THE SAME INSTANT AS THE CAR SHIFTS DOWN AUTOMATICALLY. I TALKED TO A VOLVO SERVICE TECHNICIAN WHO AID THAT HE HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HIS OWN 2004 XC90 BUT HE WAS UNABLE TO FIND WHAT HAD CAUSED IT.

I TRIED TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION AND THEN TRIED TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE STARTED BUT ALL THE GAUGES ON THE DASH WERE DOWN. HAD TO PUSH THE GAS PEDAL HARD SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS BEHAVING AS IF IT WAS IN LOW GEAR. POWER WINDOWS, POWER STEERING, INDICATORS, LIGHTS, GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR, AUDIO WAS TOTALLY CUT OFF. I CALLED A LOCAL TECHNICIAN AND TO CHECK THE PROBLEM, BUT HE COULD NOT FIND THE FAULT. HOWEVER HE CLEARED THE ERRORS AND CHECK ENGINE MESSAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS RESTORED AFTER ALMOST 1 HOUR. THEN I TRIED TO RETURN BACK TO HOME. THE NEXT DAY, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED, AND IT KEPT OCCURRING SEVERAL TIMES. I HEARD SEVERAL REVIEWS FROM SEVERAL CUSTOMERS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE WITH 2004 XC90. AND EVERY ISSUE IS RELATED TO CEM. THE MODULE COSTS $1200+ WHICH IS A VERY HIGH COST. THIS SITUATION IS SO DANGEROUS WHILE YOU ARE ON FREEWAYS AND MAY CAUSE ACCIDENTS. VOLVO SHOULD RECALL ALL THE 2004 XC90S AND REPLACE THESE MODULES AND ALSO COMPENSATE ALL THE OWNERS WHO HAVE REPLACED THEIR CEMS.

I HAVE VERIFIED THAT THE FUSES ARE GOOD, AND THAT THERE ARE NOW NO WORKING HEADLIGHTS ON THE CAR. HAD THIS HAPPENED AT NIGHT IT COULD HAVE BEEN BAD, VERY BAD. WITH MY HEART POUNDING, I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND GOT OUT TO SEE THE DAMAGE. I WENT TO THE RESIDENTS HOME AND TOLD THEM MY STORY. THEY WERE THANKFUL MY FIANC AND I WERE OKAY. ACROSS MULTIPLE ONLINE FORUMS, VOLVO OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE CEM, OFTEN PLACING DRIVERS AND OCCUPANTS IN DANGER AS THEY EXPERIENCED COMPLETE ELECTRICAL OUTAGE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE DRIVE TRAIN ALSO SEEMED STUCK IN A HIGH GEAR AND WOULD NOT DOWNSHIFT WHICH MADE NORMAL DRIVING CLOSE TO IMPOSSIBLE ESPECIALLY ON MOUNTAIN ROADS. ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER, THE CAR MADE THE VIOLENT NOISE AGAIN UNDER THE HOOD AGAIN AND JERKED VIOLENTLY AGAIN. LUCKILY THERE WAS AN AUTOZONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT AND I HAD THEM READ THE ENGINE CODES WHICH WAS ONLY SHOWING A 'DSTC FAILURE' (DASHBOARD WAS NON-FUNCTIONAL). I DECIDED TO REPLACE THE BATTERY WITH A NEW ONE IN HOPES THAT THE FAILURE WAS BECAUSE OF A WEAK BATTERY TRICKING THE COMPUTER TO GO INTO SURVIVAL MODE. UPON RESTARTING THE CAR, POWER WAS RESTORED TO THE CABIN (AC, RADIO, AND DASH WERE ALL WORKING AGAIN) AND THERE WAS NOW A 'SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT' MESSAGE WHICH I COULDN'T CLEAR FROM THE DASH, NOR COULD THE TOOL FROM AUTOZONE DETECT OR CLEAR VIA THE PLUG TO THE COMPUTER PORT. THERE WERE NO ENGINE CODES IN THE AUTOZONE COMPUTER AFTER THE BATTERY CHANGE BUT WE STILL HAD THE SRS WARNING LIGHT / MESSAGE ON THE DASH. RESEARCH SHOWS THIS IS A FREQUENT AND RECURRING PROBLEM KNOWN SINCE AT LEAST 2004. IT HAS CAUSED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGE TO NUMEROUS XC90S. VOLVO IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE UP TO AND INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT OF VOLVO USA. AT THIS POINT THE DASHBOARD GOES BLANK, THE HEADLIGHTS FLICKER AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS TURN ON. THIS TURN OF EVENTS GETS SO SCARY THAT I PULL OFF THE ROAD AND WAIT FOR A FEW MINUTES. I AM THEN ABLE TO TURN THE CAR ON AND KEEP DRIVING. BUT ONCE THE ISSUE HAS OCCURRED IT KEEPS OCCURRING MORE AND MORE FREQUENTLY IF I KEEP DRIVING, ABOUT EVERY 10 TO 15 MINUTES. HOWEVER IF I LET THE CAR REST FOR A FEW HOURS OR OVERNIGHT I AM ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR FINE. AS A TREND THIS PROBLEM IS WORSENING. WHEN I FIRST EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM IN THE SUMMER OF 2010 IT ONLY OCCURRED ONCE. I WAS ABLE TO RESUME MY LONG ROAD TRIP WITH NO OTHER INCIDENT. THE NEXT TIME IT OCCURRED WAS ON THE SAW MILL RIVER PARKWAY, A WINDING ROAD FROM NY CITY TO CT. IT OCCURRED AT NIGHT AND WAS FAR MORE SCARY THAN BEFORE. AGAIN I WAS ABLE TO RESUME MY TRIP BUT THIS TIME THE PROBLEM OCCURRED TWICE BEFORE I REACHED HOME. THE THIRD TIME IT HAPPENED WAS ON THE LAST LEG OF A LONG ROAD TRIP FROM CT TO FLORIDA. SAME SYMPTOMS BUT WITH MORE FREQUENCY. ON ALL THE OCCASIONS I WAS TRAVELING WITH MY FAMILY THAT INCLUDED TWO SMALL KIDS AND ON ONE OCCASION TWO ELDERLY PEOPLE TOO. THIS OCCURS AT ANY SPEED BUT IT IS MOST PREVALENT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. IT NORMALLY HAPPENS AT SPEEDS OF 65MPH OR HIGHER. THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL ENGAGE FOR ONE SWEEP (THEY WILL BE SELECTED ?OFF?), THE RADIO (IF ON) WILL TURN OFF AND ON AGAIN, THE GAUGES ON THE PANEL WILL GO DEAD AND THEN COME TO LIFE. THE MOST UNSAFE THING IS A LOUD ?THUMP? THAT OCCURS IN THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. IT FEELS LIKE SOMEONE HAS SUDDENLY SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND THEN RELEASED THEM. THIS ALL HAPPENS IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. THE ENGINE DOES NOT STOP DURING THIS SEQUENCE AND THE BRAKES APPEAR TO KEEP WORKING. THIS HAS OCCURRED WITH AND WITHOUT THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED. THERE ARE NO WARNINGS, LIGHTS, OR CAUTION MESSAGES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DURING OR AFTER IT OCCURS. NONE OF THE DEALERSHIPS WE'VE TAKEN IT TO HAVE DISCOVERED THE CAUSE. I RECENTLY DISCOVERED A NHTSA INVESTIGATION THAT WAS COMPLETED IN NOVEMBER 11, 2010 ON 20 CASES INVOLVING SIMILAR ISSUES WITH 2004 XC-90S. THE INVESTIGATION NUMBER IS PE10-025. APPROXIMATELY 7 MONTHS AGO I STARTED HAVING INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS (NAVIGATION FAILURE, ENGINE SERVICE ALERTS, SECURITY ALARM SYSTEM FAILURE). MESSAGES WOULD APPEAR AND THEN STOP. RECENTLY WHILE DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS A MESSAGE APPEARED ABOUT A POSITION LIGHT FAILURE, THEN PROGRESSED TO MULTIPLE LIGHT FAILURES. THIS OCCURRED AT NIGHT ON THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY WHICH IS POORLY LIT IN MANY AREAS AND HAS WINDING ROADS WITH STEEP DROP OFFS. WE HAD TO DRIVE WITH MY PASSENGER AIMING A FLASHLIGHT TO SEE THE ROAD UNTIL WE COULD TURN OFF ON AN EXIT. THERE IS NO WHERE ON MOST OF THE PARKWAY TO PULL OFF AND WE WERE AT GREAT RISK WITHOUT HEADLIGHTS. WE CHECKED FUSES, AND THEN STARTED AGAIN AND HEADLIGHTS WORKED, SO DROVE ON. LATER ON THE INTERSTATE THEY FAILED AGAIN AND WE HAD TO PULL OFF AND PARK AND GET ANOTHER RIDE HOME. VOLVO CONFIRMED THAT THE CEM FAILURE IS A VERY COMMON OCCURRENCE WITH XC90S. THEY USED TO KEEP SOME OF THESE ON HAND DUE TO COMMON NEED TO REPLACE. AS WITH OTHER OWNERS, I NOW HAVE A $1200+ REPAIR TO REPLACE THIS. I BELIEVE ONLY THE FOG LIGHTS WERE WORKING BUT WAS WORRIED ABOUT VISIBILITY ON THE ROAD AS WE HAD NO REAR LIGHTS WHAT SO EVER AND THE MAJORITY OF THE TRAFFIC AT NIGHT ON THE I-10 IS TRUCKS. DROVE ON SHOULDER FOR ABOUT 2 MILES AND TOOK THE NEXT EXIT. SMALL GAS STATION ONLY, NO REPAIR SHOP, NO MOTEL NOTHING; ONLY A TRUCK STOP. WE HAD NO USE OF GAUGES, BLINKERS, HAZARD LIGHTS, RADIO, AIR CONDITIONING, HEADLIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS. WINDSHIELD WIPERS HAD POWER AND WERE MOVING WHILE ON THE AUTOMATIC SETTING, WITHOUT ANY RAIN TO AUTOMATE THEM. AN ABS ERROR LIGHT CAME ON BUT WE WERE ABLE TO USE THE BRAKE AND GAS PEDAL. WE WERE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH ON A HIGHWAY AND WERE LUCKILY ABLE TO EXIT WITHOUT HAVING THE USE OF BLINKERS OR BRAKE LIGHTS. WHEN WE TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON, WE RESUMED POWER, BUT HAD AN SRS WARNING LIGHT APPEAR. I HAVE BEEN HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 WHICH THE DEALERSHIP HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO CORRECT FOR MY FOURTH VISIT NOW. THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING AND EACH TIME I TAKE IT IN, THEY ARE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE AND OF COURSE FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO REPAIR. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY AS NOT HAVE BEEN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WHEN IT HAPPENS, BUT I COULD IMAGINE IT COULD CAUSE A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 7/18. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 70MPH ON THE FREEWAY AND THE CAR MADE A 'THUMP' AND ALL THE LIGHTS AND GAUGES TURNED OFF MOMENTARILY AND STARTED BACK UP AGAIN. I SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 60MPH AND MOVED TO THE RIGHT SIDE AND THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN ABOUT 5 MIN LATER. LUCKILY I WAS CLOSE TO THE EXIT WHERE MY MECHANIC SHOP WAS SO I SLOWED DOWN TO EXIT. ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TURNED OFF, AS WELL AS THE AIRCONDITIONING (115 DAY IN PHX) AND A WARNING LIGHT FLASHED SAYING I HAD A BREAK FAILURE. I WAS ABLE TO LIMP TO THE MECHANICS AND LEFT THE CAR RUNNING SO THEY COULD SEE THE ENGINE WAS ON, BUT NOTHING ELSE. THEY DID NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO CHECK THE 'CODE' ON A VOLVO. THEY WERE ABLE TO RE-SET IT BY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY, AND THE LIGHTS WORKED AGAIN. AS I PULLED OUT OF THE MECHANICS, THE CAR THUMPED AGAIN AND I ONCE AGAIN LOST ALL POWER. I LIMPED THE CAR HOME WITH PLANS TO DRIVE IT EARLY IN THE MORNING BEFORE IT GOT TOO HOT, TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP. IN THE MORNING, THE CAR WOULD NOT START AT ALL. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD IT BROUGHT OVER. THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP ONCE AGAIN COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG, BUT FOUND SOMETHING TO FIX AND CHARGE ME FOR, THE IMPULSE SENSOR ($250). I FINALLY GOT THE CAR BACK ON JULY 29TH, 10 DAYS LATER. AFTER DRIVING 125 MILES WITHOUT INCIDENT, WE LEFT OUR 2004 VOLVO XC 90 T6 AWD PARKED FOR 4 HOURS BEFORE DRIVING AGAIN. AFTER LESS THAN A HALF MILE AT LOW SPEED, THERE WAS A "THUMP" FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR, THE WIPERS CYCLED, THE GAUGES ALL WENT BLANK, SOME OF THE WINDOWS STOPPED WORKING, THE A/C WENT OUT (BLOWER STAYED ON). THE CAR STAYED ON, BUT SEEMED "STUCK" IN SECOND GEAR AND THE BRAKES BECAME "SPONGY," BUT OPERABLE. TURN SIGNALS WERE INOPERABLE AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THE INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE GEAR SHIFT WENT OUT AND THE CENTRAL LOCKING SYSTEM STOPPED FUNCTIONING. WE GOT OUT OF TRAFFIC AND INTO THE SHADE. I CHECKED ALL FUSES AND TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR. IT WOULD RESTART, BUT WITHIN SECONDS THERE WERE MULTIPLE "CLICKS" COMING FROM THE AREA NEAR THE FUSE BOX IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT FOLLOWED BY THE ELECTRICAL FAILURES DESCRIBED ABOVE. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS WE MOVED IT TO A SECURE LOCATION TWO MILES AWAY. DURING THAT DRIVE ALL OF THE ABOVE PROBLEMS HAPPENED AGAIN, INCLUDING THE ENGINE BEING "STUCK" IN SECOND GEAR. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT OVERNIGHT, IT STARTED AND RAN WITHOUT INCIDENT. SINCE THE INITIAL PROBLEMS WITH THE RADIO, THE PROBLEMS HAVE PROGRESSED TO THE POINT OF COMPLETE ELECTRICAL FAILURES WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS OF OVER 55MPH. THESE INCIDENTS INVOLVED A COMPLETE SHUT DOWN OF THE GAUGES (TACHOMETER, SPEEDOMETER, FUEL GAUGE, AS WELL AS AUDIO SYSTEM). I HAVE LEARNED FROM ONLINE SEARCHES (SPECIFICALLY, WWW.ABOUTAUTOMOBILE.COM/COMPLAINT/2004/VOLVO/XC90/ELECTRICAL+SYSTEM) THAT THESE INCIDENTS ARE BEING EXPERIENCED BY MANY OTHER VOLVO XC-90 OWNERS. SUCH INCIDENTS HAVE CAUSED MANY OWNERS TO TAKE THE CAR TO THEIR VOLVO SERVICE DEPARTMENT ONLY TO BE TOLD, AS I WAS THAT DETERMINING THE PROBLEM WOULD BE COSTLY AND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN NOT OTHER COMPLAINTS OR RECALLS BY VOLVO. THEY CHARGED $160 TO TRY AND "FIGURE IT OUT" BUT THEY JUST ENDED UP UPGRADING THE SOFTWARE. ON MY TRIP BACK DOWN TO NYC, THE SAME THING BEGAN HAPPENING AFTER ABOUT 3 HOURS OF DRIVING. IT FLICKERED A FEW TIMES AND AGAIN WENT COMPLETELY DARK TELLING ME TO PULL OVER ON THE FREEWAY. AFTER PULLING OVER THE AIRBAG MESSAGE COMES ON. A PROBLEM WITH THE CEM DUE TO HEAT SOAK ON A LONG DRIVE - 2004 VOLVO XC 90 HAS A SPLIT-SECOND SEVERE "THUMP" IN THE FRONT END DUE TO THE POWER LOSS, WHICH IS THEN FOLLOWED BY A VERY BRIEF (SPLIT SECOND) INTERNAL (MEANING DASHBOARD LIGHTS, HI-FI, DOME LIGHTS, ETC) POWER FAILURE. POWER THEN RETURNS AND THE CAR CONTINUES TO DRIVE - HOWEVER, THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. WHILE DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON APRIL 25, 2009, MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 BEGAN JERKING AND THEN THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SWOOPED TO THE FAR RIGHT AND THEN BACK TO LEFT WITH NO OTHER MOVEMENT, THE RADIO SHUT OFF, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS BEGAN WIPING, AND THE DOOR LOCKS AND WINDOWS WOULD NOT WORK. I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY IN HOPES OF RESETTING THE COMPUTER. ONCE THIS WAS DONE THE CAR STARTED AGAIN. MESSAGES ARE STILL DISPLAYED. WE CONTACTED VOLVO CORPORATE AND HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A LOCAL DEALERSHIP TOMORROW. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND IT IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT FOR THIS SAME TYPE PROBLEM. I STOPPED, TURNED OFF THE CAR FOR 15 MINUTES THEN IT STARTED UP AGAIN WITH ALL THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS WORKING, BUT STILL DISPLAYING THE MESSAGE "SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT". NOT WANTING TO B STUCK IN THE EVERGLADES I CONTINUED DRIVING, AND THE JERKING MOTION AND ISSUE WITH ELECTRICAL OCCURRED AGAIN TWO MORE TIMES. THE LAST TIME WAS WHEN I WAS PULLING OFF THE HIGHWAY ONTO MY EXIT FOR HOME IT DISPLAYED THE MESSAGE "BRAKE FAILURE! STOP SAFELY". THIS SAME ISSUE HAPPENED LAST SUMMER WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WITH OUR KIDS FROM MIAMI TO JACKSONVILLE. SHE TOOK IT TO A VOLVO DEALER IN DAYTONA BEACH AND ONE IN JACKSONVILLE. BOTH DEALERS WERE NOT ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. WHEN BACK IN MIAMI, I TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO IS VOLVO-CERTIFIED AND HE WAS NOT ABLE TO FIX THE ISSUE EITHER. MOMENTS LATER, WE LOST ALL CONTROL OF THE CAR - TOTAL ELECTRONIC SHUTDOWN. NO LIGHTS, NO HAZARDS, NO POWER STEERING, NO BRAKES. MY HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO GLIDE TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE, AND WE ROLLED UNTIL THE CAR STOPPED. WE HAD OUR TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR, ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, IN THE DARK. IT WAS A TERRIFYING PREDICAMENT, AND WE COULDN'T LEAVE THE CAR DUE TO THE DANGER OF NOT BEING SEEN. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED, AND A FEW DAYS LATER, THE VOLVO DEALER SAID IT WAS A $60 SOFTWARE UPGRADE THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. AFTER THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO US, WE TOOK IT TO ANOTHER VOLVO DEALER AND HAD THEM PERFORM A 45K CHECK-UP, HAD THEM REEVALUATE THE SITUATION, AND ALSO HAD A VA STATE INSPECTION DONE, AND THEY TOLD US EVERYTHING WAS FINE. JUST BARELY 3 MONTHS LATER, IN EXACTLY THE SAME SCENARIO, THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED. ON 9/21/07, WE WERE ON A HIGHWAY AT NIGHT, AND ONCE AGAIN FELT THE CAR JERKING, FOLLOWED A FEW MINUTES LATER BY TOTAL ELECTRONIC FAILURE. NO LIGHTS, NO HAZARDS, NOTHING. ONCE AGAIN, WE MANAGED TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY SAFELY, BUT I FEAR THE NEXT TIME THIS HAPPENS, WE MAY NOT GET SO LUCKY. THIRD TIME IT HAPPENED, I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE DEALER SO THEY COULD SEE WHAT I WAS EXPERIENCING. ON THE WAY THERE, I HAD COMPLETE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER: NO POWER TO SPEEDOMETER, TO GAS GAUGE, TO WINDOWS, TO AIR CONDITIONING, RADIO, ETC. ALSO HAD LESS THAN FULL POWER TO DRIVE WITH. IT WOULD NOT JUMP. I THEN CALLED THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME TO CALL THE VOLVO HOT LINE FOR A TOW. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE GENGRAS VOLVO DEALERSHIP IN EAST HARTFORD, CT ON THE MORNING OF AUGUST 22, 2005 AND IT REMAINS THERE AT THIS TIME. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPORTS THAT ALL OF THE COMPUTERS ARE MALFUNCTIONING. THEY REPORT THIS TO BE "AN ACT OF GOD" AS IN THE CAR WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTENING. I WAS ADVISED TO REPORT THIS TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY WHICH I DID. AN APPRAISER WAS DISPATCHED TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND THEN SPECIAL ENGINEERS FROM NORTH EASTERN TECHNICAL SERVICES. INC IN FALL RIVER, MA WENT TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP TO VIEW THE VEHICLE. THEY REMOVED TWO COMPUTER MODULES WITH PERMISSION OF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND MICROSCOPICALLY EXAMINED THEM TO DETERMINE IF ANY CONNECTORS, CIRCUIT BOARD OR COMPONENT DAMAGE WAS PRESENT. NEITHER MODULE SHOWED ANY INDICATORS OF DAMAGE. AT THIS POINT THE CLAIM HAS BEEN DENIED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY SAYING THAT THE PROBLEM IS A WARRANTY PROBLEM. VOLVO DISPUTES THIS SAYING IT IS "AN ACT OF GOD". THE VEHICLE IS LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD AND HAS LESS THAN 24,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE SINCE AUGUST 12, 2005. IT DOES QUALIFY FOR THE LEMON LAW, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, I FOUND THAT THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER REPORTED ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILURES OF THIS MODEL. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS IS INDEED A PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR MODEL AND THE VOLVO IS TRYING TO COVER IT UP. *JB

WE LEASED OUR VOLVO XC90-T ALMOST EXACTLY 1 YEAR AGO TO DATE FROM SOUTH COUNTY VOLVO. LESS THAN 3 MONTHS LATER, THE CAR WOULDN'T START. THEY SAID THAT MY WIFE MUST HAVE LEFT A LIGHT ON; THE BATTERY WAS RECHARGED AND WE TOOK THE CAR BACK. 2 MONTHS LATER, THE CAR AGAIN WOULD NOT START; AGAIN IT WAS TOWED-BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME, THEY SAID THE BATTERY WAS BAD. THE THIRD TIME THEY SAID THERE WAS BAD SWITCH WHICH CONTROLS THE LIGHTS AND THAT WAS CHANGED. ON THE FOURTH OCCASION, WHICH INCIDENTALLY OCCURRED EXCATLY ONE YEAR LATER ON JULY 7TH, 2005, THEY (AGAIN) SAID WE MUST HAVE LEFT A LIGHT ON...NO ONE CAN BE THAT DUMB, NOT EVEN ME!. I AM FAST LOSING MY CONFIDENCE IN VOLVO!

I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS FAILURES WITH MY 1990 VOLVO: I AM ON MY THIRD SET OF TIRES, AND I HAVE 30,000 MILES. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL SHOCK ABSORBERS REPLACED ,A TIE ROD BREAK, AND MANY ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. *AK

SINCE I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR I HAVE HAD SMALL ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS - MOONROOF WON'T OPEN OR CLOSE, G DOOR OPENER NOT WORKING AFTER 3 DAYS, MUST PRESS UNLOCK BUTTON SEVERAL TIMES TO UNLOCK DOORS. ALSO, THE CAR BOUNCES AT ALL SPEEDS, AND SHIFTS LATE. LABOR DAY, 2004, I WAS DRIVING THE CAR WHEN ALL GAGES WENT OUT - SPEED OD, GAS, OIL PRESS, ENTIRE ABS SYSTEM, ETC. I FOUND IT WAS FUSE 24 AND REPLACED IT. THIS FUSE BLEW 4 MORE TIMES OVER THE NEXT 3 DAYS - ONCE IT BLEW WHEN REPLACING IT. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THIS WAS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE AND SCHEDULED REPAIR FOR 2 WEEKS LATER. (THE ABS SYSTEM STILL REPORTED WARNINGS ON THE MESSAGE DISPLAY). ONCE THE DEALERSHIP FINALLY WORKED ON IT, THEY REPLACED THE CENTRAL ELECTRICAL BOX AND ORDERED A NEW TRANSMISSION WHICH STILL NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED. I STILL HAVE THE ABOVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS ALONG WITH THE OTHER PROBLEMS WHICH THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS ARE ALL RELATED. THERE IS 10,000 MILES ON THIS CAR. PREVIOUSLY, I OWNED A 1999 XC. I CONTINUED TO HAVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR UNTIL I STARTED IT AT A DAYCARE TO HAVE THE BATTERY EXPLODE. SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM WAS TO UPGRADE ME TO THE 2004 WITH THE ASSURANCE THE PROBLEMS I HAD ON THE 1999 WERE "HIGHLY UNUSUAL AND UNHEARD OF". DUE TO MY PAST EXPERIENCE, AND THE VERY SIMILAR PROBLEMS I AM HAVING WITH THE 2004, I FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN THIS VEHICLE. *AK

ON AUGUST, 26, 2004 THERE WAS A MAJOR MALFUNCTION IN OUR VOLVO XC90 (2004). WHILE DRIVING WITH 2 SMALL CHILDREN IN CAR SEATS AND 2 ADULTS ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY; SUDDENDLY, THERE WAS NO ACCELERATION IN THE GAS PEDAL AND THE STEARING WHEEL DID NOT FUNCTION. WE MANAGED TO SLOWLY MOVE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FROM WHAT MOMENTUM WAS LEFT IN THE CAR, AND AVOID AN ACCIDENT. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY VERY SHAKEN UP, AND FIND THIS CAR COMPLETELY UNSAFE. IT HAS BEEN 3 WEEKS NOW GETTING THE RUN AROUND WITH THE CHERRY HILL, NEW JERSEY VOLVO DEALER. THEY SAID "THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR". THE CAR IS UNSAFE FOR OUR FAMILY, AND PRESENTS A DANGER FOR OTHERS ON THE ROAD. WE ARE AFRAID IT WILL STOP DEAD AGAIN ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY WITH DEATH OR INJURIES OCCURING TO EITHER OURSELVES OR OTHERS. THE DEALER ASKED US WHAT WE WANTED "WE FINALLY SAID, (AFTER THEY SAID THEY'D GET US A NEW SUV AND DID NOT) THAT WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK ($3,000 DEPOSIT) AND WE DON'T WANT THIS CAR THEY SOLD US. TODAY, THEY MADE US TAKE THIS CAR BACK AND THEY ARE REFUSING OUR REQUEST TO REFUND OUR MONEY. ALSO, THE CAR WAS TOWED ON A FLAT BED TRUCK IN TO THE DEALER ON JULY 13TH, 2004 AS THE CAR DID NOT START.. "RELAYS WERE LOOSE IN THE ICM AND CEM ETC.," [WE HAVE THE SERVICE ORDER] ON THIS DAY, THE MESSAGE ON THE CAR SAID SOMETHING TO THE EFFECT "URGENT MALFUNCTION IN SUV AIR BAGS..." AND WE UNLOADED THE FAMILY AND IT WAS TOWED TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP. AND THE CAR'S 2 SIDE MIRRORS WORK ONE DAY AND NOT THE NEXT. TOMORROW I TAKE MATTHEW TO HIS FIRST DAY AT PRE-SCHOOL, AND I'M HALF THINKING WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO THE CAR WHEN WE'RE DRIVING. IT'S AMAZING TO ME THAT VOLVO CAN LET ME LEAVE THEIR PARKING LOT WITH THIS CAR THIS EVENING, AND THE AREN'T TAKING SAFETY SERIOUSLY AT ALL.
