While driving on the highway "SRS urgent" text came on, also hear clicking sounds under dash on driver side, then dashboard indicator lights completely disappear (speed, fuel, temperature, etc) . Extremely hot under driver side dash. Fortunately, still able to steer and brake. This has happened twice now. Mechanic believes most likely CEM failure or DIM failure. My vehicle also has a wet A-pillar fabric (Volvo forums indicate possible cause of failure). I removed drivers A-pillar and found a clogged drain tube from the sunroof. However, did not notice any obvious signs of water inside the vehicle, though it hasnt rained for over a month when this happened.

SIMILAR TO MANY OTHERS, WHILE DRIVING OUR 2004 VOLVO XC90, WE HEAR A CLICK, THEN THE CLIMATE, RADIO AND WINDSHIELD WIPERS (IF ON) SHUT OFF AND THEIR DISPLAY LIGHTS BLACK OUT, THEN ANOTHER CLICK IN A FRACTION OF A SECOND AND THEY COME BACK ON. THIS WAS HAPPENING RANDOMLY, AND NOTHING ELSE WAS AFFECTED, UNTIL THIS WEEKEND, WHILE ON A TRIP. WE WERE DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS, OUTSIDE TEMP IN THE 80'S, NO RAIN, AVERAGE SPEED ABOUT 70MPH. IT HAPPENED A FEW TIMES OVER ABOUT 45 MINUTES, THEN BEGAN HAPPENING EVERY 5 MILES OR SO. WHEN I TURNED UP THE AC FAN, WITHIN ABOUT A MINUTE IT CLICKED AND WE LOST THE USUAL THINGS, BUT THEY DID NOT COME BACK ON. THEN WE HEARD ANOTHER CLICK AND LOST ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTING AND CONTROLS; WE COULD NOT SEE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, THE CLIMATE CONTROL WAS BLOWING HOT AIR AND COULD NOT BE SHUT OFF OR TURNED DOWN, AND WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT SPEED WE WERE GOING AS IT WAS NIGHTTIME. EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING AND DANGEROUS. WE MADE IT TO THE FIRST EXIT THAT HAD A GAS STATION AND STOPPED. THE CAR WAS VERY HARD TO ACCELERATE WHEN WE GOT OFF AT THE EXIT AS WELL. I WAS ABLE TO OPEN THE WINDOWS BUT WHEN I OPENED THE MOON ROOF, IT STOPPED HALF WAY AND THEN WOULD NOT CLOSE OR OPEN. WE WERE STRANDED FOR HOURS AWAITING A FAMILY MEMBER TO COME GET US AND THEN HOURS LONGER WAITING FOR THE VEHICLE TO BE TOWED. OUR MECHANIC RESEARCHED THIS AND ENCOURAGED ME TO REPORT, AS HE SAID THERE SEEM TO BE HUNDREDS OF REPORTS OF SIMILAR THINGS HAPPENING WITH THIS YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLE.

2004 VOLVO XC90 SUDDEN ENGINE STALL WITH LOSE OF HEADLIGHTS: I WAS TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE AT NIGHT WITH THE CRUISE SET AT 75 MPH WHEN SUDDENLY IT WAS LIKE SOMEONE TURNED THE IGNITION KEY TO OFF FOR ABOUT 3 SECONDS, AND THEN TURNED THE KEY BACK ON WITHOUT RESTARTING THE ENGINE. WITH ALL THE WARNING LAMPS ILLUMINATED, AND THE ENGINE AT A STALL I PULLED INTO THE EMERGENCY LANE, AND STOPPED. I THEN SHIFTED TO PARK AND ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, WHERE IT TOOK SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO START. THE HEADLIGHTS DID NOT STOP WORKING WHILE PULLING OVER, AND WHEN I STOPPED I SWITCHED THE LIGHTS OFF BEFORE I RESTARTED THE ENGINE. THE FIRST THING AT MIND WAS A FUEL PUMP THAT WAS STARTING TO ACT UP. AFTER RESTARTING I REVVED THE ENGINE UP A FEW QUICK TIMES (TO CLEAR THE ENGINES THROAT). I THEN GOT BACK ON THE INTERSTATE ACCELERATING TO 75 MPH , BUT DOING SO MANUALLY THIS TIME(NO CRUISE CONTROL). ABOUT 10 MIN HAD PASSED WHEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE STARTED LOSING POWER AS I WAS HAVING TO PRESS THE ACCELERATOR HARDER TO MAINTAIN SPEED. WHILE STILL COASTING AT 65 MPH OR SO I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL, AND ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE ENGINE, WHEN I TURNED THE KEY TO THE START POSITION I LOST ALL THE LIGHTS, I QUICKLY RELEASED THE KEY TO THE ON POSITION, AND THE LIGHTS REMAINED OFF. I QUICKLY PULLED TO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND USED THE FORCE TO AVOID THE GUARDRAIL AND THE DITCH. ALL THE WARNING LIGHT WERE ILLUMINATED, AND THE ENGINE WAS AT A STALL. I THEN TURNED THE IGNITION KEY OFF AND THEN BACK ON, AND THAT RESTORED THE HEADLIGHTS. IT TOOK 5-8 ATTEMPTS TO RESTART THE ENGINE, AND AGAIN I'M THINKING FUEL PUMP ACTING UP. EACH TIME I ATTEMPTED TO RESTART THE ENGINE IT WOULD SPIT AND SPUTTER LIKE IF THE FUEL PUMP WERE ONLY DELIVERING HALF THE PRESSURE NEEDED FOR THE FUEL INJECTORS. AFTER THE ENGINE RESTARTED I MADE IT HOME, AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT ARISEN SINCE,

I HAD THIS PROBLEM A FEW TIMES A YEAR AGO AND NOW IT HAS RETURNED. I WAS DRIVING MY CAR AT NIGHT IN THE RAIN ON A TWO LANE FREEWAY WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I LOST THE HEADLIGHTS, DASH LIGHTS, SPEEDOMETER, RADIO, POWER WINDOWS, ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION, AND MUCH MORE FUNCTION OF THE CAR. THE ENGINE IS STILL RUNNING BUT IT SEEMS TO ALMOST RESET OR SOMETHING THEN START SHUTTING STUFF DOWN. I SEE ON YOUR WEBSITE SOMEONE PUT THIS IN AS A COMPLAINT ALSO THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS YOU CANT SEE AT NIGHT THE CAR IS HARD TO DRIVE ITS OBVIOUSLY THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH WATER GETTING INTO THE ECM. I CALLED MY LOCAL VOLVO DEALERS AND NOT ONE OF THEM HAD ANY INFORMATION OR KNOWLEDGE OF THIS PROBLEM. WHEN VOLVO HAS A SERVICE NOTICE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND HAS OBVIOUSLY SPENT A LOT OF TIME LOOKING INTO IT. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE REALLY BAD WHEN IT RAINS OR I USE THE WIPERS FURTHER LEADING ME TO SEE THAT IT IS THE SAME THING IN INVESTIGATION PE-10-025. THESE ARE ONLY THE PEOPLE WHO ARE COMPLAINING TO YOU THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE THAT VOLVO IS SWEEPING UNDER THE RUG TO MAKE A BUCK. IT'S DISGUSTING.

I SWITCHED FROM HEADLIGHTS ON TO DAYLIGHT DRIVING LIGHTS ON. I RECEIVED A "BULB FAILURE" FOR THE DAYLIGHT DRIVING LIGHTS. I SWITCHED BACK TO HEADLIGHTS. I RECEIVED A "BULB FAILURE" FOR THE HIDS. I HAVE VERIFIED THAT THE FUSES ARE GOOD, AND THAT THERE ARE NOW NO WORKING HEADLIGHTS ON THE CAR. HAD THIS HAPPENED AT NIGHT IT COULD HAVE BEEN BAD, VERY BAD. THANK GOD IT HAPPENED DURING A SUNNY DAY AND THAT THE TEEN DRIVER WASN'T BEHIND THE WHEEL.

OVER THE YEARS THE SERVICE FROM MICHELLE BALSIDE AT VOLVO ON PLAINFIELD ROAD IN CINCINNATI HAS BEEN TRULY EXCELLENT, HER CONTACT INFORMATION IS ATTACHED. HOWEVER, WE HAVE HAS AN ISSUE SINCE 2011 THAT HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED, WHICH IS SO UNCHARACTERISTIC OF VOLVO. I AM HOPING YOU CAN HELP ME CHANGE THE OUTCOME. ACCORDING TO THE TWO SEPARATE DEALERSHIPS, THE CENTRAL ELECTRONICS MODULE IS THE CULPRIT, AND NEEDED REPLACING. ACROSS MULTIPLE ONLINE FORUMS, VOLVO OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE CEM, OFTEN PLACING DRIVERS AND OCCUPANTS IN DANGER AS THEY EXPERIENCED COMPLETE ELECTRICAL OUTAGE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 65 AND 70 MILES ON A MAJOR INTERSTATE MY 2004 VOLVO XC 90 HAS A SEVERE "THUMP" IN THE FRONT END, WHICH IS THEN FOLLOWED BY A VERY BRIEF (SPLIT SECOND) INTERNAL (MEANING ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS, HI-FI, DOME LIGHTS, RADIO AIR CONDITION, OIL GAGE, FUEL GAGE CLOCK ) POWER FAILURE. WHILE TRYING TO PUSH THE GAS THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. AT FIRST I HIT SOMETHING ON THE HIGHWAY. SO AFTER DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH I FIND OUT THAT THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THE VOLVO XC 90 AND THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION ON THIS SAME ISSUE IN NOVEMBER 2010 IN WHICH VOLVO IS FULLY AWARE OF AND "ACKNOWLEDGES A PROBLEM AFFECTING SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES INVOLVING WATER SEEPAGE INTO THE PLENUM BOX AREA IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. WHEN THIS OCCURS WATER MAY ENTER INTO THE INTERIOR PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND TRACK ALONG THE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE, THE DEVICE THAT CONTROLS MANY OF THE VEHICLES ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDING WIPER OPERATION, LIGHTING, AND TRANSMISSION OPERATION. IF THE WATER REACHES THE CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE CONNECTOR ELECTRICAL FAULTS MAY RESULT." THIS IS A $1200.00 REPAIR WHICH VOLVO SHOULD PAY. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH AT NIGHT, THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ACTIVATED AND SUDDENLY FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. IN ADDITION, THE LOW BEAM WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT ACTIVATED THE FOG LIGHTS IN ORDER TO CONTINUE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.

DRIVING FROM PHX TO TUS AT 75 MI OUT OF PHX AT ABOUT 2200HRS. THE CAR COMPLETELY FAILED FOR FRACTION OF A SECOND THEN RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION UNTIL ARRIVING AT DESTINATION 10 MI. LATER. THE SECOND TIME A WEEK LATER WAS TRAVELING TO PHX AT 1800 HRS. 70MI OUT OF TUS. THE CAR FAILED LIKE THE FIRST TIME THEN A FEW SECONDS LATER DID IT AGAIN REACHED DESTINATION ABOUT 15MI. LATER. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE LIGHTS, RADIO, WINDOWS, DASH LIGHT AND GAUGES ALL STOP WORKING THE MESS. COMES ON ABS,SRS. ITS HAPPENED 5 OR 6 TIMES NOW WITH THE WORST BEING YESTERDAY 16 JUNE 2012 . I GOT OFF LOOP 202 AND PULLED IN A PARKING LOT AND SHUT DOWN THE CAR AND THEN ATTEMPTED TO RESTART 4 TIMES BEFORE IT RESTARTED. THE A/C,WINDOWS, LIGHTS, GAUGES,TURN SIGNALS ALL FAILED. THE MESS. WAS DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED WHEN ALL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS SHUT DOWN. DASH PANEL INDICATED BRAKE FAILURE, STOP CAREFULLY. NO LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS, SPEEDOMETER, TACHOMETER, AIRBAGS, HAZARD LIGHTS, PWR WINDOWS, PWR BRAKES, RADIO - NO POWER TO ANYTHING. CLEAR, DRY WEATHER CONDITIONS. THIS HAD BEEN HAPPENING FOR SHORT CYCLES FOR APPROX. 2 MONTHS. WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD TURN ON FOR ONE CYCLE AND ALL POWER WOULD SHUT DOWN TO DASH, RADIO, LIGHTS ETC. BUT WOULD LAST FOR ONLY A SECOND OR TWO. THIS MIGHT HAPPEN 2-3 TIMES ON APPROX. 20 MILE DRIVE HOME ON HIGHWAY. THIS ONLY HAPPENS AT HIGHWAY SPEED. BUT THE INCIDENT ON THURSDAY 05.26.11 NO POWER LASTED FOR 10 MILES UNTIL I GOT THE VEHICLE HOME. HAD THE CAR SIT FOR AN HOUR AND THEN STARTED AGAIN AND THE DASH INDICATED SRS SYSTEM FAILURE BUT ALL POWER WAS RESTORED TO CAR.

THIS HAS TO DO WITH FAULTY HEADLIGHT SYSTEM ON THIS CAR. I HAVE HAD REPEATED FAILURES OF THE LOW BEAM ON BOTH SIDES. THE CONNECTOR THAT THE HEADLIGHT PLUGS INTO OVERHEATS TO THE POINT WHERE THE PLASTIC CONNECTOR MELTS AND NO LONGER WORKS. TO FIX IT REQUIRES THAT A NEW CONNECTOR BE PURCHASED AND SPLICED IN TO REPLACE DEFECTIVE PART. IT APPEARS THAT THE WIRE GAUGE IS TOO LOW THUS CREATING BOTH A FIRE HAZARD AS WELL AS A SAFETY HAZARD FROM HAVING HEAD LAMPS FAIL. I HAVE SPOKEN TO BOTH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND VOLVO CORPORATE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY BOTH SAY THAT THERE IS NO RECALL THUS THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO HELP FIX IT AT THEIR COST. OF COURSE, THEY ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HAVE ME PAY THEM A RIDICULOUS PRICE TO REPAIR IT FOR ME. THEY SEEMS TO CARE NOT THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. FROM RESEARCH I HAVE DONE, IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS AND HAS BEEN A KNOWN ISSUE FOR VOLVO AND YET THEY DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. THE SERVICE PERSON I SPOKE TO TODAY AT THE NALLY VOLVO DEALERSHIP IN ATLANTA, GA ADMITTED TO ME THAT THEY HAVE ALL SORTS OF ISSUES WITH HEADLIGHTS SO THIS WAS NOT A SURPRISE TO HIM AT ALL...BUT SAID THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING TO HELP FIX IT. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE NHTSA PLACE SERIOUS PRESSURE ON VOLVO TO ISSUE A RECALL TO FIX THIS SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD.

THERE IS A LOW BEAM FAILURE INTERMITTENTLY ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE REGARDLESS OF WHETHER I'M USING THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS OR THE BI-XENON HEADLIGHTS. THE BULB HAS BEEN REPLACED, FUSES CHECKED, WIRING CONNECTIONS CHECKED AND THE FAILURE CONTINUES. THE ONLY INCIDENT THIS HAS CAUSED HAS BEEN A WARNING FROM A POLICE OFFICER ABOUT GETTING IT REPAIRED. I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP TWICE AND THEY INDICATE THAT EVERYTHING IS RUNNING FINE, HOWEVER THE BULB FAILURE TYPICALLY HAPPENS AFTER THE CAR HAS WARMED UP AND HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR A WHILE. *TR

MY RADIO, CD PLAYER, OR SATELLITE RADIO WOULD NOT OPERATE 2 DAYS AGO AND STARTED WORKING THE NEXT TIME I STARTED MY CAR. ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO THE CAR WOULDN'T START. IT ACTED LIKE THE SECURITY SYSTEM HAD BEEN ACTIVATED AS IT WOULD CRANK, BUT NOT START. I WAITED FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND TRIED IT AGAIN AND IT STARTED THE FIRST TIME. I HAVE CHECKED ALL FUSES. I AM TAKING IT TO THE REPAIR SHOP TODAY TO SEE IF THEY CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT IS HAPPENING. THESE PROBLEMS ARE INTERMITTENT AND DO NOT REPEAT OFTEN ENOUGH TO DIAGNOSE PROPERLY. CUSTOMER INSPECTION OF BULB CONTACTS AND BULB HOLDER SHOWED EVIDENCE OF HIGH HEAT DUE TO MELTING OF METAL AND PLASTIC. ON 07/16/10 VOLVO DEALER REPLACED HEADLIGHT BALLAST, CONTROL MODULE, CONTACT UNIT AND BULB. RIGHT HEADLIGHT PROBLEM CORRECTED AT COST OF $435.09 - BALLAST & CONTROL MODULE; $108.90 - CONTACT UNIT; AND $162.00 - BULB, PLUS LABOR. CURRENT PROBLEM IS LEFT-SIDE HEADLIGHT NOT WORKING AND APPEARS TO BE A REPEAT OF PREVIOUS RIGHT-SIDE PROBLEM. *TR

WE PURCHASED OUR XC90 2005 FROM GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN, CT ON DEC 24, 2006. IT IS NOW OCT 11, 2007. SINCE WE'VE HAD THE CAR WE'VE PUT AROUND 8,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS NOT OUR PRIMARY VEHICLE AND SITS PARKED IN OUR GARAGE MOST OF THE TIME. ON 10/10/07, UPON LEAVING WORK AND GETTING INTO MY SUV I SAW A RATHER LARGE PUDDLE OF WATER ON THE FLOOR OF THE DRIVER?S SIDE OF MY XC90. THE CAR OBVIOUSLY HAD BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE AND IT WAS RAINING THAT DAY. SINCE WE WERE BRINGING THE CAR INTO STAMFORD VOLVO ON 10/11/07 TO REPLACE THE FRONT HEADLIGHTS - THE SEAL ON BOTH HEADLIGHT WERE CRACKED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED (THESE PARTS WERE UNDER WARRANTY AND I FIGURED IT WAS BEST TO DO THAT), I ALSO REQUESTED STAMFORD CT VOLVO TO LOOK AT THE WATER PROBLEM AS WELL. ON 10/11/07, STAMFORD CT VOLVO INFORMED ME AND MY HUSBAND THAT THE SUNROOF DRAINS WERE CLOGGED AND HAVE BEEN FOR SOMETIME. WE WERE LED TO BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS IN FACT A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION. IN FACT HE ELABORATED TO SAY THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS CAR. IT IS PROBABLY THE REASON WHY THE CAR HAS ALWAYS HAD A MUSTY ODOR TO IT. IN FACT, WE NOTICED THIS ODOR AT TIME OF PURCHASE FROM GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN, CT AND THE SALES MAN (MATTHEW MARTIN AT GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN, CT) HAD ALSO NOTICED THE ODOR AS WELL AND AT OUR REQUEST WAS GOING TO LOOKING INTO IT MORE. ON 10/11/07, I CALLED PAUL SMITH THE GENERAL MANAGER AND SUPPOSED OWNER OF GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN, CT TO NOTIFY HIM OF THE DRAIN PROBLEM AND DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR AND TO LET HIM KNOW THAT THIS PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE SINCE IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR AND THERE WAS AN MUSTY ODOR HIS SALESMAN HAD ACKNOWLEDGED. UNSAFE FRONT SUSPENSION REPAIRED 4 TIMES BY VOLVO INVOLVING DISTRICT FACTORY TECHNICAL SUPERVISOR AND TECHNICIANS ON 3 OF FOUR OCCASIONS AND THE VEHICLE STILL HAS SERIOUS SAFETY AND HANDLING CONCERNS - NO ONE IN THE FAMILY WILL DRIVE THE CAR. IT HAS ALSO HAD SERIOUS PERFORMANCE RELATED SAFETY ISSUES REGARDING VEHICLE ELECTRONICS VIRTUALLY SHUTTING THE VEHICLE DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSTATE. ANTI SKID PROBLEMS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. DRIVERS SEAT BELT ANCHOR WAS IMPROPERLY ATTACHED AND WOULD NOT HAVE HELD IN AN ACCIDENT. THE STEERING WHEEL CAME DANGEROUSLY LOOSE WHILE DRIVING AND THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT IT HAD NEVER BEEN PROPERLY AFFIXED. (I HAVE OWNED 300 CARS IN MY LIFE AND NEVER HAS A STEERING WHEEL COME LOOSE)! TIRES WERE ABNORMALLY BADLY AND QUICKLY DUE TO SIGNIFICANT SUSPENSION PROBLEMS AND WERE NOT WARRANTY BY THE MANUFACTURE.. ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS CAUSED SEVERAL FUSES TO BLOW IN THE DARK EFFECTIVELY TURNING ALL REAR MARKER AND TAIL LIGHTS OFF. IT WAS NECESSARY TO DRIVE WITH THE HAZARD LIGHTS ON TO AVOID BEING HIT BY ANOTHER DRIVER. *TR
